I AM THAT vs. “This is who I think I am” – Part Thirty-Six

An Advaita Vedanta forum focusing on Realisation, (Realization), enlightenment, non-duality, Real Love, peace, freedom, Your original nature, the natural state, and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

(A series offering pointers for moving through the relative existence in Love, in peace, in harmony, and in touch only with that which is natural)

F.: (Continued from yesterday) In the 24 July 2009 post, the discussion showed that seekers, when they fixate at the religious or spiritual level, have only completed half of the “journey” to Full Realization. They believe the light that fell upon them was the bright noontime light; it was, in fact, only the dull light of dawn.

That is why 6.5 billion people can walk the planet while claiming to be religious and/or spiritual without having even the slightest clue at all about who they are not or about how to find What They Truly Are; about how to stop walking and talking in their sleep; about how to be free of the insanity of magical / supernatural thinking; or about how to be free of the nonsensical belief that their false identities are real.

They believe that everything is a result of some external god or power or force in the universe. They do not understand that every thought they think and every word they say and every deed they do is driven by the mental illness of monomania which inspires them to assign a supernatural cause to everything—including all happenings that are simply occurring naturally.

Believing that the cause of everything is an external force that is controlling events on the planet, they do not understand the actual cause(s) of anything. Then, driven by their religious and/or spiritual personas, they will go to any lengths deemed necessary to support their false beliefs and false identities and to inspire (or force) others to accept their beliefs as well.

Persons who are totally disgusted by the insanity of the masses in general—insanity that is exposed millions of times a day across the globe—have extraordinary tolerance for the insanity on display within their religious groups, their spiritual groups, and their own homes. Why?

That tolerance allows for the continuation of all of their false personas and also inspires others with whom they associate to tolerate their insanity. In their game of mutual but selective acceptance of insanity—acceptance of their partner’s insanity or their fellow worshipers’ insanity or their fellow group members’ insanity—they co-dependently reinforce false identities and false beliefs and set the stage for the widespread acceptance of nonsense.

While monomania appears most often among the non-Realized masses who are trapped in their religious and/or spiritual personas, the mental illness can appear in varied ways, many depicted in literature:

In Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff is described as a monomaniac, obsessing over being reunited with Cathy.

In Melville’s novel Moby Dick, Captain Ahab is a monomaniac, his every thought and word and deed and, yes, his entire relative existence revolving around his desire to kill the white whale. In one passage, it is noted that “in his narrow-flowing monomania, not one jot of Ahab’s broad madness had been left behind….”

Monomania does indeed result in a narrowing: in being "narrow-minded," in living a narrow existence, in being driven by a very narrow and ignorant and warped perspective.

In Braddon’s Lady Audley’s Secret, Robert Audley is accused of being a monomaniac because of his endless attempts to prove her guilt. Monomania is described via her words, and those words reveal exactly why the 6.5 billion people who have assumed a religious and/or spiritual persona as a true identity walk about in their sleep and unconsciously repeat the words of their programmers.

Her words show why such persons are insane; why they cannot accept any pointers that challenge their rigid belief systems; why they express with pride, but without logic or reason, their inane beliefs; why they have been reduced to abidance as a one-dimensional persona; why their brains are shifted into neutral and no longer used; why their corruption-filled minds are closed to truth; and why they are not ever likely to see the ignorance of their myth-based beliefs or to awaken to truth. She said:

What is one of the strangest diagnostics of madness—what is the first appalling sign of mental aberration? The mind becomes stationary; the brain stagnates; the even current of reflection is interrupted; the power of the brain resolves itself into a monotone. As the waters of a tideless pool putrefy by reason of their stagnation, the mind becomes turbid and corrupt through lack of action; and the perpetual reflection upon one subject resolves itself into monomania.

As noted yesterday, monomania reduces its victims to one-dimensional persons, trapped in what is a personality that was developed either (a) during childhood programming and conditioning or (b) in adulthood via a newly-assumed primary personality that assigns some notion of “god-ness” to every happening on the planet and in the universe:

"Yes, God has blessed me with a wonderful _____ (fill-in-the-blank with "house," "spouse," "life," "child," "family," "job," "set of parents," "support group," ad infinitum) or

"Yes, God works in mysterious ways, but I will overcome this loss of _____ (fill-in-the-blank with my "home," "savings," "child," "parent," "city," ad infinitum) "and I will eventually be even stronger for having endured all of this misery and suffering. In fact, God will now use my suffering to help others. I will save lives and make lives better. I are blessed, and I have now been blessed with the power to bless others."

In the process of being convinced that something supernatural is the one, single cause of all, non-Realized persons will not understand the cause of anything; thus, they will remain asleep and ignorant and will believe that an external power or force is micro-managing everything, be it dualistically perceived as either "good" or "bad."

And that is why you are invited to complete the entire "journey," to be free of the duality that comes with the assumption even of personas that are thought to be "the good ones."

What chance has the Dalai Lama to understand the role played by ocean temperatures and pressure systems and northern hemispheric movements of tides and wind currents in affecting the routes of hurricanes if he is convinced that some external power is not only determining the course of hurricanes but is using their destructive winds and flooding rains to realign "karmic imbalances"?

Suffering from monomania will guarantee that persons will suffer from the unchecked influence of seemingly limitless ignorance. So it is when programming, conditioning, acculturation, and domestication trap the masses in false identities and false beliefs.

You are invited to reach the third step on the "path," to play the religious and/or spiritual roles that must be played for a time, but then to transition those false identities and continue along the "path" to the no-concept, non-dual, no insanity, no-nonsense state of Full Realization. Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)
