THE OSTRICH EGG: AN ADVAITIN ANALOGY. CONCLUSION

An Advaita forum focusing on Realisation, enlightenment, non-duality, Real Love, peace, freedom, Your original nature, abiding naturally, the Oneness, the Nothingness, and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

Here, there is nothing that is believed, so there is no one here who wants you to believe anything, either. Here, the invitation is to be free of all that you have been programmed, conditioned, acculturated, and domesticated to believe so that you can be free, period.

Furthermore, for those who have developed a preference for any non-nisargan yoga or who prefer Traditional Advaita Vedanta, Neo-Advaita, Neo-Vedanta, or Pseudo Advaita: here you will only find the use of the Direct Path Method of teaching along with the Nisarga (Natural) Yoga, all shared in simple, everyday English.

(Please note: The Annual Fall / Winter Season Book Sale is now under way. Most Non-Duality eBooks at floydhenderson.com are on sale at 30-50% off regular price.)

What do you see when you view the ostrich egg against the background of emptiness?

The ostrich egg itself is simple, natural. The background is empty, silent. There is not much to label, judge or react to. That is why this simple picture is observed to see what is there and how the mind responds to it.

When the mind is observed in this simple context, witnessing without reaction and attachment, the machinery of the mind can be seen at work. This is simple witnessing.

Perhaps a few labels and descriptors may arise; perhaps a memory arises; perhaps a few random unrelated thoughts arise; perhaps a few feelings arise. The thoughts and feelings are not your own. Do not take possession of them. Simply observe.

Then, this gaze can be applied to other objects to which there is some “history” or “emotion” attached. Just observe. Perhaps the memory stream that arises is more vigorous; perhaps the feelings that arise are more intense. Do not worry. They are still not your own if you do not claim them.

With practice, you can keep this dispassionate stance when witnessing any object, person or event – whether they are neutral, or have a positive or negative connotation for you.

This is often the place of instruction where the seeker fears becoming robotic, cut off from emotion, dead, lifeless, unresponsive. Have courage. Yes – there is no ego-driven emotional REACTION; however, pure feeling will continue to rise and flow through with a depth and poignancy perhaps never felt before. Tears may fall, laughter may happen, the full range of sadness, compassion, empathy, bliss may arise and be felt, but in simple observation there is no claiming, clinging and attaching to a feeling. It rises and disperses like smoke.

Consider these quotes by Maharaj which describe this dispassionate stance:

I look, but I do not see in the sense of creating images clothed with judgements. I do not describe nor evaluate. I look, I see you, but neither attitude nor opinion cloud my vision. And when I turn my eyes away, my mind does not allow memory to linger; it is at once free and fresh for the next impression.

They (self-realised people) may laugh and cry according to circumstances, but inwardly they are cool and clear, watching detachedly their own spontaneous reactions. Appearances are misleading and more so in the case of a self-realised people.

This series has reflected on the nature of perception in several different ways:

Reflection 1
  • How objects are temporary, fleeting and impermanent.
  • How objects are composed of elements which are in constant motion.
  • How objects consist of elements which cycle: elements combine; there is a temporary form, elements un-combine.
  • How objects are inherently empty.
  • How this “emptiness” is not easily perceived with a mind stuffed full of concepts.
  • How these reflections are true for all objects, from an ostrich egg to a human being.
Reflection 2
  • Persons perceive through filters, for example, body identification, mind identification, personality identification.
  • The filters of perception can be indicators of where the seeker is located on the “path”.
  • There is only one reality seen from the unfiltered gaze of pure understanding.
Reflection 3
  • Thoughts and feelings arise in “emptiness” – separate and unconnected.
  • When thoughts and feelings seem personal and private, they are claimed and glued together, giving the appearance of an entity.
  • This entity is the egoic sense of self. It is not real.
  • Observed with logic and insight, the false self is seen as not having any actual existence, and dissolves upon investigation.
Reflection 4
  • Simple witnessing means observing any object, person, event, thought, memory, or feeling without claiming ownership.
  • This dispassionate stance breaks up the “coherence” of a perceiving egoic entity, allowing reality to be perceived as it really is.

Let’s end with Maharaj:

Q. After liberation what remains of the person?
M. A vague memory remains, like the memory of a dream, or early childhood. After all, what is there to remember? A flow of events, mostly accidental and meaningless. A sequence of desires and fears and inane blunders. Is there anything worth remembering? The person is but a shell imprisoning you. Break the shell.

Thank you again for pointing "me" to THAT and the understanding that came as well. Hopeful for future "contact"! Sincerely, Anthony M. W.

The Twice-Stolen Necklace Murders offers the non-duality message by way of a mystery-adventure novel, discussing the movement from pain to healing to awakening to peace.
From Dr. R.F. Maley, Ph.D, Professor Emeritus and former Head of the Department of Psychology, University of Houston: "Floyd Henderson's book, The Twice-Stolen Necklace Murders, is a fun read and an interesting mystery, but perhaps more importantly it serves as a vehicle for blending Eastern Philosophy and Native American Spirituality to make an intellectually challenging novel. The book's insights into both relationships and authoritarian conditioning of people in our society make it a must read, tracing the roots of narcissistic, sociopathic and psychopathic behaviors to the very core of the culture. This truly witty and politically-incorrect study of the aggressive nature of 'the American character' offers not only a diagnosis but also a treatment plan, making the book an excellent supplemental reading in courses such as psychology, anthropology, philosophy, sociology and counseling."
