ARE YOU AFRAID OF TOTAL FREEDOM? Part Two

Here, there is nothing that is believed, so there is no one here who wants you to believe anything, either. Here, the invitation is to be free of all that you have been programmed, conditioned, acculturated, and domesticated to believe so that you can be free, period.

F.: Very early on, all persons are robbed and kidnapped. First, they are robbed by their parents and their cultures of the simple existence that any body-cum-consciousness would and should otherwise enjoy, leaving to all persons an inheritance that no sane person would want (or accept), namely, a very complex, complicated, and restricted relative existence.

Next, they are kidnapped, and their case is not unlike that which appears in so many mystery novels: characters are kidnapped, bags are thrown over their heads so they can no longer see, they are knocked unconscious, and when they awake to a tiny degree, they find they are locked away in one of a variety of rooms or cells.

Sometimes in mystery novels or movies, a hero comes along to rescue them, but in most instances of an actual kidnapping, there is no rescue...there is no escape. The Realized Advaitin teacher is no hero or rescuer but does deal with those who have been robbed and kidnapped and who are blinded and cannot see;

with those who have been rendered unconsciousness even though they continue to walk about and talk; and with those who are locked away in a state of entrapment. Imprisoned among the ranks of the non-Realized, most will never escape.

Thus, the non-Realized masses have been blinded and cannot see, and they are walking about and talking though unconscious; however, there is one difference from the kidnapped people in mystery novels: the non-Realized are totally unaware that they have been locked away...totally unaware that they are in a state of entrapment...totally unaware that they are not free.

Might a nagging sense of their condition manifest? On some occasions, but having no means by which the lies and restrictions of their culture can be seen and discarded in order for Truth and freedom to come, they shake off the sensation and continue with their boring and confining existence.

Indeed, the real mystery in all cases among the non-Realized becomes: "I don't even know who I am anymore!" and "Who Am I?" and "What happens when we die?" and "I sense I am something more than this body, but what?" or "This relationship makes me feel like I am in jail" or "My addiction has left me in bondage, hooked on work or spiritual work or money or shopping or drugs or alcohol or food or nicotine or a plethora of false identities or, yes, even hooked on my addiction to chaos."

Yet most will never wake up enough to even ask those questions or to make those statements. Most eventually become so "comfortable" with their discomfort that they normalize it and minimize it and become afraid of freedom: "Better to be in prison with company that to be free but alone," they think unconsciously (without even knowing what they are actually thinking).

That is the typical condition of the relative existence for most persons, so the discussion will continue only for the few who might come across this site and who might be willing to at least consider the possibly...

...that they were robbed early on,

...that they have been kidnapped,

...that they were hoodwinked,

...that they have been unconscious for most of their existence, and

...that they are not free at all.

There can be no freedom when the answers to the most basic questions remain a mystery and cannot be answered. When the answers are not known, then the false ideas in one's culture will be accepted as truth; then, a limited, confined, and confining existence becomes the only possibility for the robbed, kidnapped, hoodwinked, unconscious, imprisoned masses.

Maharaj said: "False ideas about this 'I am' lead to bondage; right knowledge leads to freedom and happiness."

So, the discussion from yesterday will continue:

3. DEFINING FREEDOM - CONVENTIONAL SOURCES (definitions, continued)

g. "freedom" is immunity or exemption from an obligation or duty

How many are driven by an obligation or duty that allows for no immunity or exemption and, thus, no freedom? Consider the ego-states involved in that scenario:

** "The Patriot" that soon upgrades itself to "The Super Patriot": such persons will be driven by a sense of duty and obligation to die for the silliest causes that their commanders can dream up, following death-assuring orders without question in the exact manner that they were programmed and conditioned to do before being allowed to enter the field of battle.

** "The Son" or "The Daughter" that struggles to be upgraded to "The Super Son" or "The Super Daughter": How many trapped in that ego-state, seeking parental approval and "love," will automatically and blindly practice the parents' religion; will parrot their parents' beliefs; will acquiesce to the parents' demands regarding the proper kind of employment that is acceptable in the eyes of the parents;

will marry someone, as the parents desire, rather than just live together (and will actually marry over and over again until they "get it right" in order to receive an "attaboy" or an "attagirl" from mom and dad or in order to avoid being scolded as happened early on when they were "The Bad Son" or "The Bad Daughter" )?

How many of those types will never tap into that which they know - but do not know that they know - and will instead adopt every one of their parents' beliefs and customs and traditions and mores without question, trapping them forever in the role of "The Clueless, Controlled Child"? Persons need not "hate" their earliest and most influential teachers - their parents and culture - in order to see that their nonsense really was, and still is, nonsense.

Prison can manifest in many forms other than gray concrete and steel bars. To feel obligated to accept, with questioning, all of the beliefs and concepts and values of one's parents and / or one's culture preempts any chance for total freedom to manifest and assures that persons will be imprisoned for the entirely of their relative existence.

Why? Because those among the non-Realized masses will be so afraid of becoming independent and walking the less-traveled path that they will also be afraid of total freedom itself.

F.: Of the thousands of pointers offered by Maharaj that proved to be germane to seekers, one was shared yesterday that ranks among the most pertinent and unequivocal and illuminating that he ever shared:

"...You are afraid of freedom!"

1. DEFINING FREEDOM - MAHARAJ
First, How did Maharaj define freedom? "Freedom means letting go. People just do not care to let go everything."

And that lack of willingness to let go is not confined to the 97% among the masses who are trapped in the ignorance of their prized, myth-based dogma. Some of the most dogmatic of all persons are self-declared "Advaitins" or "Traditional Advanta Vedantins" or "Pseudo-Advaitins" or "Neo-Vedantins" or "Neo-Advaitins" or "Direct Path Advaitins" or "The Real Advaita Vedantins."

Freedom is freedom from all duality, from all concepts, from all identification. Yet many who claim such freedom are in self-delusion. For example, some come to this site and remain for the entire dance, some having visited here since May of 2005; others, however, come for a post or two and stay

(a) not long enough for their ego-states to be eradicated but only

(b) long enough for their ego-states to feel hurt or threatened or interfered with or offended.

They leave quickly (yet not quickly enough), staying long enough to report how we understand nothing about Advaita Vedanta or long enough to leave a profane rant because "Floyd does not pronounce Eastern words properly." And such persons can take themselves to be Fully Realized and totally free? Yes they can.

It might be asked, "Of which version of Advaita Vedanta do they speak? Traditional, neo-Advaita, neo-Vedanta, Pseudo-Advaita, Direct Path?" and "Of which yoga do they speak? Hatha, bhakti, raja, gnana, nisarga, or some other?"

Is their issue that they think they know all there is to know about Advaita Vedanta though they have been exposed to only one method of teaching or to only one yoga?

Did they reach the mountaintop with a pack mule carrying their equipment? Does that mean that one whose equipment was carried by a sherpa and is standing on the same mountaintop has not really reached the mountaintop because he / she did not arrive in the exact, same fashion as the one deciding who has reached the mountaintop and who has not?

Is it possible that the one who is not free at all and who is making such judgments is having to look upward, not really having reached a mountaintop at all? Is it possible that the truly Realized see no such levels of "higher vs. lower"..."top vs. not-top"?

Or does it mean that the judgmental types have no freedom at all, that they are driven by their egotism-supported ego-states to move through the relative existence while making their uninvited visits to one place after another, telling all who are different from them how wrong they are?

Is the preoccupation with such differences that drives their "me vs. them" campaigning actually evidence of how totally embroiled in duality they really are? To use Maharaj's words, what is it that they are not willing to 'let go of'?" The role of "The Knower"? The ego-state of "The Spiritual Giant Who Is Cursed to Walk Among Spiritual Lilliputians?"

Are there roles that you, similarly, prefer not to "let go of"? Could Maharaj be correct? Could it be that if you were truly objective, you might have to admit that, indeed, you are afraid of freedom (at least freedom that is the only real type of freedom that there is, namely, total freedom)?

Beyond the 97% who are lost in the dream of the superstition-based nonsense taught by the major sky cults, consider also those who might stumble upon this site but are lost in the role and in the agenda of "The Real Advaita Vedantin" mentioned above:

Is there any real freedom exhibited by their behavior that is so obviously driven by the subconscious agenda of a persona? The questions to be asked include...

..."WHO" (what false ego-states) are so attached to personhood that they have no clue at all that their thoughts and words and actions are determined by their egotism-driven persona(s)?

...WHO (what false ego-states) are so lost in the illusory sense of "having Realized" that they cannot see that they are not free at all?

2. DEFINING FREEDOM - LOUISE
What did Louise have to say about that type of blind behavior when she defined freedom in past postings?

"Freedom is impersonal – how can you expect to find it when you are so attached to your personhood? Freedom is formless – how can you expect to find it when you are committed to your form? Freedom is limitless – how can you expect to find it if you are defined by what is particular and limited? Freedom is without attributes – how can you expect to find it when you define yourself according to your characteristics?"

3. DEFINING FREEDOM - CONVENTIONAL SOURCES
And what are some of the conventional definitions of freedom that are offered in a variety of dictionaries? Here are a few:

a. the power to act or speak or think without externally imposed restraints;

b. exemption from external control, interference, regulation, etc.;

c. the power to determine action without restraint;

d. exemption from the presence of anything specified - for example, freedom from fear;

e. ease or facility of movement or action; and,

f. in philosophy, the power to exercise choice and make decisions without constraint from within or without; autonomy; self-determination.

Yet consider: when personality determines thought, word and deed, then none of the above forms of freedom can manifest. If one is driven by the agenda of a personality, then there is no power to act or speak or think without the externally imposed restraints of personality.

The person cannot be exempt from the external control and interference and regulation of one or more agenda-driven personas.

Living under the auspices of personality, there can be no power to determine action without restraint.

Living under the auspices of personality, there is no exemption from the presence of such personality-specified aspects such as desire and fear.

Living under the auspices of personality (which determines all thoughts and all words and all actions) there can be no ease or facility of movement or action.

Living under the auspices of personality, there can be no power to exercise choice and make decisions without constraint from within or without.

As long as all is self-determined (determined by the false self) then there can be no Self-determination (determined by the natural, spontaneous aspects of the unblocked, pure consciousness).

Realization is, among other things, about freedom from ignorance and irrationality and insanity...about being restored to sanity. What could be more ignorant and irrational and insane that believing that one is free when one is bound up in personality, imprisoned by delusions, trapped in the cage of one's "mind," and living under the auspices of egotism-driven ego-states?

F.: At a certain point on the "path," it is understood that Real Freedom and Real Love (not the "love" spoken of by the masses) are one. If wisdom is knowing You are nothing, and if Love is knowing that You are everything, then that understanding of True Love can come only after freedom from self comes (that is, freedom from all false self identification).

Maharaj said: "To know the Self as the only reality and all else as temporal and transient is freedom, peace and joy."

He said, "Attachment is bondage, detachment is freedom" and "Understanding of oneSelf is necessary for freedom from the bondage of illusion." That includes attachment to beliefs and personality and identity and concepts and duality and to people and to places and to things. Knowing that attachment to all of that must go in order to be free, how many will ever truly want total freedom?

Most will always choose bondage over total freedom and will choose illusion over complete independence, believing that they can be free by degree. What distortion. The call of personality to honor desires and to experience fears will almost always drown out the Realized teacher's call to total freedom and to True Love.

And understand that the "love" that persons speak of has nothing to do with Real Love, which can only be understood after the manifestation of freedom from personality and from belief in all concepts and ideas.

Recall Maharaj's pointer: "As long as you are enmeshed in the tribulations of a particular personality, you can see nothing beyond it," and if you can see nothing beyond a false self that you are focusing on because it feels threatened or hurt, then most assuredly you cannot see the Oneness and Real Love.

He said, "Self-limitation is the very essence of personality" and made clear that it is "devotion to the goal of freedom and perfection" that will allow you to "abandon all theories and systems and live by wisdom, intelligence and active love."

It is complete freedom from every belief - each of which forms one of the bars of the prison that is called "your mind" - that leads to the other levels of freedom that Maharaj described as "Freedom from anxiety" and that makes way for "a sense of ease and joy" and "deep peace within and abundant energy without."

Yet none of that can happen, he said, until "freedom from ignorance" manifests, and ignorance can only manifest in the form of concepts and beliefs. Thus, freedom can only manifest in the total absence of beliefs and concepts, and the same applies to True Love.

Yesterday it was shared that Maharaj taught: "The personality gives place to the witness, then the witness goes and pure awareness remains." Note that freedom comes only after the personality gives way, allowing the "journey" to Full Realization to happen.

With Full Realization comes an understanding of the unicity, and with the understanding of the unicity comes freedom from personality and beliefs, and with freedom from personality and beliefs - combined with an understanding of the Oneness - comes the understanding that True Freedom is True Love.

Freedom from belief in all that is false - from all duality - is True Love. Maharaj said, "In dream you love some and not others. On waking up you find You are Love itself, embracing all. Personal love, however intense and genuine, invariably binds; Love in freedom is Love of all."

The irony is that persons, as noted above, only give lip service to freedom; they really do not want it. Consider:

Questioner: Since you have found your freedom, will you not give me a little of it?
Maharaj: Why little? Take the whole. Take it; it is there for the taking. But you are afraid of freedom!

But you are afraid of freedom!

And what is able to be afraid? What can know fear? Only a persona, or more accurately, the many personas that you and your culture use to define you. In their defining you with their labels, and in your defining yourself with their labels, there can be no freedom (so there can be no understanding of True Love either).

What there can be - when living with their labels - is false love, the dualistic "A" love "B" and "B" loves "A" version of love, but belief in such duality-based love is a setup for misery since the Laws of Thermodynamics apply to everything in the relative, including the myth of "relationships."

What comes together will come apart, and the identities that are assumed when things or people come together will most assuredly come apart. Again, belief sets up misery, for the false belief that anything in the relative can be permanent will be proved false at some point, after which disappointment and misery and suffering will come.

Furthermore, the false belief that relatives such as bodies and "minds" and personalities can have continuity and can be permanent is false, but at least post-manifestation, there will be no one "there" to know the beliefs were in error. (Maharaj: "Memory creates the illusion of continuity.")

With these teachings there is no, "Well, someday you're going to see that your beliefs about heaven and hell and about eternal continuty and about eternal reward or punishment were false." Post-manifestation, there will be no "one" to see or know anything. So it is.

Thus, because of that "no future one" to someday see and know and enjoy, freedom and True Love can only happen now and can only be enjoyed now. If it is the bliss you seek, seek it now. Postpone not. Maharaj said, "Desirelessness is the highest bliss," and since personality alone generates desire and fear, then it can also be said:

"Freedom from personality leads to freedom from desire and fear, and freedom from desire and fear is the highest bliss, and the highest bliss is also known as 'True Freedom' and 'True Love'."

Here, there is nothing that is believed, so there is no one here who wants you to believe anything, either. Here, the invitation is to be free of all that you have been programmed, conditioned, acculturated, and domesticated to believe so that you can be free, period.

LOUISE on this subject: "In the end, the seekers or knowers entranced by personality will never find - already believing they know the answers already."

F.: Recently Louise shared what needed to be heard by one trapped in that very state, but he "knew" too much already; thus, he ignored the evidence of the enneagram results when his behaviors were shown to be textbook examples of how his personality drivers always result in very specific but limited - and even destructive - thoughts and words and deeds, relatively speaking.

LOUISE: "He called today to say he is going on antidepressants (an attempt to reduce the effects of a personality that keeps him inert, immobilized, and worrying obsessively)."

And why will anti-depressants not address his issues effectively? Because the issues are based in one or more mirages. Go into the desert and try to treat a mirage. What misdirection! Yet all day long persons look at mirages and mistake them for the Real. Recall Maharaj's pointer: "As long as you are enmeshed in the tribulations of a particular personality, you can see nothing beyond it."

Consider how miserable the relative existence is when one is "enmeshed in tribulations," and that happens when persons are identified with "a particular personality," along with many other personalities as well, of course; yet personalities generate the most anxiety and fear and anger and relative damage one at a time, when one particular personality feels threatened and when the entire focus of the corrupted consciousness is directed at preserving that particular persona at all costs.

How many that have not Realized Fully (or at all), if they could look objectively at their relative existence, would have to admit that "enmeshment in tribulations" describes perfectly so much of their past and present experiences?

While persons are driven throughout any given day by the subconscious motivators of personalities and their desires and fears, the source of such "enmeshment in tribulations," according to Maharaj, intensifies when one is focused on "a particular personality." Can any "particular personality" be said to generate more "enmeshment in tribulations" than the persona of "The Lover" or "The Spouse"?

For the sake of discussion, then, let the focus be on those particular personalities for a moment. In the U.S., 41% of all men who are killed are not killed as a result of someone being "enmeshed" in the "particular personality" of "The Driver of the Biggest Car" or "The Owner of the Largest House in the Subdivision" or "The Best Volunteer Among All of the Moms in the Community."

And 59% of all women who are killed are not killed as a result of someone being "enmeshed" in the "particular personality" of "Parent of the Year" or "The Winner of the Local City Election" or "The Head of the Parent Organization in the School."

To the contrary, 50% of the murders annually, on average, come during a "breakup" when "The Lover" personality or "The Spouse" personality feels as if it is being threatened or as if its agenda is being interfered with or if it thinks it is actually dying because the co-dependent counterpart that allowed an ego-state to be played for a period of time decides to play no more.

Such persons become so enmeshed in the tribulations of a particular personality that they can see nothing beyond it. The ego-state will not be able to see "life after the end of that ego-state as an identity," so death becomes the alternative, especially after egotistical upgrading happens.

Consider: whereas "The Spouse" merely needs someone to play the co-dependent, counterpart role of "The Spouse" in order to perpetuate the illusion of that false self, "The Super Spouse" must have a "Super Spouse" to survive.

When it strikes "The Super Husband" that he is not receiving all that "A Super Spouse" deserves, then in 50% of the cases (again in the U.S.) the male will engage in an extramarital affair; similarly, 40% of all women will have such an affair during their marriages for the same reasons. Divorce eventually follows 50-60% of the time.

But note the cyclings of personas and see why Maharaj said that "Self-limitation is the very essence of personality." Some time after "The Spouse" identity ended with a divorce, the "lesser lifestyle" exerts its pressure on the ego and one can hear: "I'm ready to marry again."

No...no you are not. Nothing has changed...there had been no shift to a purer form of consciousness that sees more clearly...more accurately. Nothing more is happening than the manifestation of the distorted memory of a persona which then generates the thought that "I am now ready to cycle into 'existence' again."

What the one making such a statement is actually ready for is not to be married again but to have once more the imagined "perks and benefits" of an arrangement that happened once before and to satisfy "the desire of an ego-state" to "be" once more; however, enmeshed in the tribulations of a particular personality, persons can see nothing beyond it.

Then, all sorts of personality-based fears will be triggered: "I might never have the great lifestyle I once had and that I want and deserve once more"; "I will never be taken care of"; "I will be deprived"; "My image and standing in the community will forever be less than it was before"; "I'll never again be invited to the community's couples-only events."

Understand that it is either (1) a threatened ego-state or the fear that an ego-state is going to end or (2) the desire to generate or regenerate an ego-state that causes distress / tribulations in the relative:

Maharaj: "You cling to personality - but you are conscious of being a person only when you are in trouble - when you are not in trouble you do not think of yourself."

If the marriage seems to be moving along swimmingly and there seems to be no trouble, "The Spouse" seems to be doing quite fine. If trouble appears and seemingly threatens the existence of a false identity, then the personality will trigger all sorts of fear and anxiety and will often also trigger defensive or offensive behaviors - some even lethal - as the false identity tries to defend it"self."

Thus, Maharaj said, "...personality is only an obstacle." To what? To clarity. To peace. To freedom. To sanity. To freedom, really? Yes. Maharaj taught: "The personality gives place to the witness, then the witness goes and pure awareness remains." Note that freedom comes only after the personality gives way.

When personality-assumption happens, even more tribulations come because each assumed personality can nurture a personality disorder, and one of those personality disorders can be "The Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder." When that aberration manifests, then the assumed personality can generate monomania, an obsession-driven form of full-blown insanity:

not unlike that monomaniac Captain Ahab whose entire existence had been reduced to one dimension, "The Super Spiritual Person" can become an all-consuming identity that dominates that person's relative existence. Days and night must involve spiritual exercises, spiritual talks...

...spiritual seeking, spiritual activities, spiritual attire, spiritual food, spiritual thoughts, moments of spiritual escape from thoughts, spiritual sitting, spiritual looks and posturing, and all of the other trappings of what Maharaj called "kindergarten spirituality."

Either "The Hindu" or "The Christian" or "The One Who Knows the Only Right and Proper Version of Advaita Vedanta" or "The Muslim" can become the all-consuming personality, though dozens of others may continue beside the one particular personality that is inspiring the monomania.

And just as with the examples above of "The Spouse" or "The Lover," personas become even more influential over thoughts and words and actions when aggravated by that obsession-driven form of mental illness called monomania. When a seemingly-threatened identity is motivated by monomania, the result of being driven by "a particular personality" can bring about an "enmeshment in tribulations" that can even lead to murder or suicide.

F.: Why did Maharaj and his contemporaries and his predecessors speak so often and so disparagingly about the personality? Because they understood (1) that all misery and suffering was the result of either hoping for something or fearing something and (2) that all hoping / desiring and fearing are generated by personality.

How could peace, much less bliss, ever become manifest and become the constant condition for the remainder of the relative existence if one is desiring something that has not come or if one is fearing something that might come?

Aggravating the efforts of seekers to stabilize in the bliss is (A) the fact that, if persons do get what they wish for, they soon will not want it; and (B) the fact that what is feared seldom happens whereas the things that truly disrupt peace during the relative existence usually come without having being anticipated at all.

Maharaj said, "Desire not, fear not, observe the actual, as and when it happens, for You are not what happens; You are to whom it happens. Ultimately even the observer You are not. You are the ultimate potentiality of which the all-embracing consciousness is the manifestation and expression."

He made clear that the very search for pleasure and the memory of pain (and the desire to avoid it) are the actual causes of misery and displeasure. The entire process is a vicious, "Catch-22"-type cycle.

Here, that lesson came only after decades of stupidity, ignorance, insanity, and totally bizarre, personality-driven thoughts and words and actions; yet throughout all those decades, "floyd" was sure that he was in charge and was making choices...neither of which was true.

To fail to understand the way that personality unconsciously controls everything that one thinks, everything that one says, and everything that one does is to fail to understand what must be understood and abandoned if freedom is ever to come.

And if happiness and bliss are to come, they must be preceded by, not followed by, freedom. Freedom from personality must come first, and it only comes at the end of the third of the seven steps to Realization when all identity is abandoned, when all beliefs are abandoned, and when all concepts are abandoned.

If Maharaj was correct in estimating that only a few thousand on the planet are truly Realized at any given time, it is only that many or fewer that understand how personality forms, how it has such power and control over every aspect of the existence of the non-Realized, how to identity specifically the personality types that are driving someone, and how then to be free of what has been seen and understood.

Globally, there is almost a complete and total lack of understanding about what personality is and how it blocks clarity, peace, freedom, and bliss. Consider:

Questioner: "I am trying to rejoin the personality back to the real self."
Maharaj: "The personality (vyakti) is but a product of imagination. The self (vyakta) is the victim of this imagination. It is the taking yourself to be what you are not that binds you. The person cannot be said to exist on its own rights; it is the self that believes there is a person and is conscious of being it. Beyond the self (vyakta) lies the unmanifested (avyakta), the causeless cause of everything. Even to talk of re-uniting the person with the self is not right, because there is no person, only a mental picture given a false reality by conviction. Nothing was divided and there is nothing to unite."

Nothing is more prized among the non-Realized than their identity, no matter how false it is. Roles, personas, personality, multiple personalities, stage characters (all with their hidden agendas, desires, and fears) are esteemed and cherished, even as they are the corroding elements of the relative existence.

It is as if one's cancer is presently controlling every aspect of the way that the relative existence is unfolding in a miserable manner and as if one is nevertheless loving that cancer dearly, as if one is attached to that which is bringing misery and suffering but cannot "connect the dots" and see that it is that which is loved so dearly that is destroying any chance for an enjoyable existence to happen.

Maharaj: Self-limitation is the very essence of personality.

What is required to be free of the limiting and debilitating effects of personality? A process, specifically, a process requiring an outer guru (the last outer resource to be engaged) and an inner guru. Yet that is not enough.

There must be a preliminary process prior to that main process. Meaning? Meaning one cannot know truth directly but must arrive at the truth which is within but which can no longer be accessed because of the blockages that prevent the pure consciousness from witnessing clearly.

The miasma of programming and conditioning and acculturation and domestication that generated personality / personalities must be removed by seeing the lies first, by first knowing all that is false. The guru guides the seeker through that preliminary process (which is the only purpose of the first two eBooks in the online course offered here: not to adopt new beliefs but to be willing to question and abandon all former and present beliefs).

The "Direct Path" method of teaching in a misnomer to one degree: the "path" to Truth is not direct; it first veers off into the darkness of ideas and concepts and beliefs and sheds light on all that is false. The false must be seen and dispelled before the "path" is cleared for completion of the "journey" to Truth, to Reality.

Only after all of the seeker's past and present beliefs and ideas and concepts have been seen to be invalid can the seeker move farther along the "path," guided by the outer guru until the inner guru (the inner resource) takes over the task, destroys the remaining obstacles or obstructions, and allows the pure consciousness to complete the "journey" to knowing the Self.

Maharaj: "The inner Guru is not committed to non-violence. He (it) can be quite violent at times, to the point of destroying the obtuse or perverted personality."

Maharaj: "As long as you are enmeshed in the tribulations of a particular personality, you can see nothing beyond it."

At that point of being restored to sanity (by having been freed from the ignorance of believing lies to be truth and mistaking self for Self), then one is also freed of the insanity of cherishing the cancer of personality.

The irony is that personality / personalities all along generated the illusion that relief (and even pleasure) could only come when each persona's desires were met and when each persona's fears were avoided. Yet it is not taking the actions that seemingly support the illusory personality that allows the happiness and bliss to manifest.

It is the very opposite that allows relief to come, namely, removing every illusory support for every illusory personality that has been assumed.

Maharaj: "The dissolution of personality is followed always by a sense of great relief, as if a heavy burden has fallen off."

That is exactly what happened here as belief in each and every personality fell away, ending with the dissolution of those personalities which are usually the last to go among seekers on this "path," namely, the religious persona, the spiritual persona, the seeker persona, and the knower persona.

Here, there is nothing that is believed, so there is no one here who wants you to believe anything, either. Here, the invitation is to be free of all that you have been programmed, conditioned, acculturated, and domesticated to believe so that you can be free, period.

F.: It has been said that "Humans pass through centuries and learn nothing." Not true, though the intended point is understood. The fact is, humans pass through centuries and learn a great deal. The problem is that it is all nonsense, lies, myths, superstitions, and learned ignorance.

And while few ever escape that fate, a few will have an opportunity to reverse that process if they understand that Truth comes not via accumulating more of the same but comes via un-learning all that has been learned.

The impediments to un-learning, to seeing clearly, to being restored to sanity, to being free of being driven by agendas hidden from others and self, to being free of anxiety and fear, to being free of the disappointment of unmet expectations and dashed hopes, to being truly free rather than dependent and co-dependent, and to being free of living under the complete control of personality, include many causes, some of which will be reviewed now:

1. programming, conditioning , acculturation, and domestication;

2. imagination, including an imaginary god, fathered by hope and mothered by fear;

3. assumed personality, (a.k.a., personas, roles, false identities, stage characters, etc.), and the fact that

4. every personality type (every persona) assumed brings with it a primary desire and a primary fear; and

5. desire (hope) and fear, which are based in personal yearnings and blocked-consciousness-misperceptions. Consider also that:

6. fifty percent of all persons, if driven by personality, will be fear-based; and understand that

7. every one of these behaviors below is based in personality; therefore, none of these behaviors are by choice (so none of them can be abandoned by choice):

** fearing that others will see that you are flawed or wrong
** fearing that you will never have all the love you hope for and think you need
** fearing failure and attaining too little admiration
** fearing you will never find the Authentic Self, thus being trapped in religious and / or spiritual workaholism
** fearing you will look foolish or less knowledgeable than others
** fearing danger and unmet needs, fearing that you will not be protected or cared for
** fearing emotional pain and boredom
** fearing a lack of power (religious, spiritual, monetary, political, etc.)
** fearing conflict

Those can never be transitioned by choice but can be eliminated via the Realization process. Understand further that to assume a role or persona is to be automatically trapped in co-dependency because every persona requires a co-dependent counterpart who is willing to play the role that sustains your assumed role:

"The Spouse" cannot "exist" without a spouse, and "The Lover" must have "A Lover"; "The Employee" cannot "exist" without one willing to play the role of "The Employer"; "The Parent" cannot "exist" without "The Child." If you are trapped in such false identification, and if your co-dependent counterpart becomes unavailable, then you will believe that you are dying (when in actuality what is ending is merely a role that was being played).

If seekers were to understand no other part of the teachings than the points that (1) the source of all relative existence "powerlessness" is personality and that (2) all personality must be abandoned in order to have choice, then their relative existence would take on a profoundly different character.

If seekers were to understand that the belief that they are choosing their thoughts and words and actions is a totally false belief because personality subconsciously controls all three, then they would have the opportunity to realize true freedom.

Maharaj said that science would one day confirm all of the Advaita teachings; thus, he would not be surprised to see today that science has provided the tools to test persons and to identify the exact personality types that are driving them (as well as to what degree).

Such concrete evidence in black and white before their very eyes often provides the understanding that moves some seekers farther along the "path" to freedom from personality and allows them to move to the fourth of the seven steps on the seven-step "path" to Realization.

Only then do most seekers truly begin to move away completely from living under the influence of personality / personalities.]
