Also, as for Maharaj, you will find more of the message that he offered in his later talks. During his last years, he said of I AM THAT: "That book and whatever was expounded at that time was only relevant for that period. I am speaking differently today" and am "emphasizing different aspects." His final understanding, quite different from what he offered early on, is the basis of pointers offered to seekers well along the "path." Maharaj made clear at the end that the pointers in I AM THAT will take you to the midpoint of "the race"; only the pointers in his final talks point the way to "the finish line."

F.: The Realized writer Thoreau spoke of persons living "lives of quiet desperation." Nowadays, there are indeed many who retreat into the isolation of a muted, depressive funk while increasing numbers of persons are embroiled in an existence marked by their noisy desperation.

Becoming more common is a roller-coaster-type of existence with sudden highs that shift to sudden lows as persons swing between manic and depressive phases. Instability is becoming the abnormal "norm," though the sages over the ages have noted the same.

In spite of the claim that "more people are enlightened nowadays than ever" (a claim with no factual evidence to support it), an over-populated planet is assuring that there has never before been a higher number of non-Realized persons moving about its surface.

(And there is factual evidence of that, available to any that witness the current levels of separation in terms of wealth vs. poverty; in terms of the formation of more and more hierarchies that are separating persons within cultures; in terms of the present divorce and divorce-murder rates; in terms of the political and religious and ideological polarization that is dividing populations evenly with half on one side and half on the other; and in terms of the fighting and chaos happening globally).

With dualistic ideas and concepts and beliefs being taught early on to children - and with the reinforcement of duality continuing throughout adulthood - then the combination of (1) a constant barrage of dualistic programming and conditioning and (2) the innate duality that is transmitted to all persons genetically will assure that the masses will remain unenlightened and non-Realized.

Furthermore, those that attach to the aforementioned examples of planet-wide duality and division and misery and suffering will be drawn into a state of emotional-or-feeling-intoxication and will be guarantee to suffer misery and suffering as well. An existence marked by a depressive funk or by quiet desperation or by noisy desperation will also be guaranteed.

Are the Realized not concerned enough to try to "change the world?" Living spontaneously, there is no hard and fast rule about what will happen or not happen post-Realization. What happens by way of some Realized will not happen by way of others.

Yet merely changing one's self - that is, becoming free of the effects of being driven blindly by the hidden agendas of assigned or assumed personalities - can, in and of itself, be a life-long project for most. In fact, how egotistical is it for persons to assume that they know exactly what other persons need to know and do and how other persons should think and feel?

In an Advaita session via Skype yesterday, a seeker was asked why he attached a particular quote to every email he sent (a quote that actually promotes dualistic, ego-driven thinking). His reply: "It just seems like something people need to know." It is possible that by the end of the session that a different take on that belief may have been seen. Or not.

Maharaj had similar visitors in the loft who had determined what people / the world needed, in their opinion:

Questioner: "There is not enough devotion in the world."

Maharaj: "You are always after the improvement of the world. Do you really believe that the world is waiting for you to be saved?"

Questioner: "I just do not know how much I can do for the world. All I can do is to try. Is there anything else you would like me to do?"

Maharaj: "Without you, is there a world? You know all about the world, but about yourself you know nothing."

and another:

Questioner: "Since immemorial time, during innumerable births, I build and improve and beautify my world. It is neither perfect, nor unreal. It is a process."

Maharaj: "You are mistaken. The world has no existence."

and later

Maharaj: "Don't you see the contradiction? For many years you sought your peace of mind. You could not find it, for a thing essentially restless cannot be at peace."

Questioner: "There is some improvement."

Maharaj: "The peace you claim to have found is very brittle - any little thing can crack it. What you call peace is only absence of disturbance. It is hardly worth the name. The real peace cannot be disturbed. Can you claim a peace of mind that is unassailable?"

Questioner: "I am striving."

Maharaj: "Striving too is a form of restlessness."

Questioner: "So what remains?"

Maharaj: "The Self does not need to be put to rest. It is peace itself, not at peace. Only the mind is restless. All it knows is restlessness."

and later

Maharaj: "No doubt, striving for the improvement of the world is a most praiseworthy occupation. Done selflessly, it clarifies the mind and purifies the heart. But soon man will realise that he pursues a mirage. Local and temporary improvement is always possible and was achieved again and again under the influence of a great king or teacher; but it would soon come to an end, leaving humanity in a new cycle of misery. It is in the nature of all manifestation that the good and the bad follow each other and in equal measure. The true refuge is only in the unmanifested."

How can one in a state of funk or desperation provide anything to "the world" or to the persons in that "world" that they claim to be concerned about? The ill spread illness; they do not eliminate illness.

Moreover, most who claim to be depressed about "the condition of the world" are usually missing the fact that it is primarily "their world" that they are depressed about. Why, then, would anyone reject the invitation to be done with "the world" once and for all?

To tolerate the funk is to "normalize" it so that it becomes familiar; as mentioned yesterday, the familiar is more welcomed among persons than the unfamiliar, so tolerance for the funk assures that the funk will appear more and more frequently; eventually, it might never leave if Full Realization does not happen.

The message that Maharaj offered to those bent on trying to "save the world" or "improve the world" boiled down time and again to this: "First, physician, heal thyself."

That is, look first to your false selves, then to Your True Self. Only then will there be anything at all to offer to the masses that are trapped in the darkness of their learned and innate duality:

Questioner: "When I look at myself, I find I am several persons fighting among themselves for the use of the body."

Maharaj: "They correspond to the various tendencies (samskara) of the mind."

Questioner: "Can I make peace between them?"

Maharaj: "How can you? They are so contradictory! See them as they are - mere habits of thoughts and feelings, bundles of memories and urges."

Questioner: "Yet they all say 'I am'."

Maharaj: "It is only because you identify yourself with them. Once you realise that whatever appears before you cannot be YourSelf, and cannot say 'I am', You are free of all your 'persons' and their demands. The sense 'I am' is your own. You cannot part with it, but you can impart it to anything, as in saying: 'I am young,' 'I am rich,' etc. But such self-identifications are patently false and the cause of bondage."

To be free of bondage, one must be free of the combined effects of both learned duality and innate duality.

"Sapolsky, Maharaj, and the Non-Dual Teachings"

Dr. Robert Maurice Sapolsky is an American neuroendocrinologist; a professor of biology, neuroscience, and neurosurgery at Stanford University; a researcher; an author; and a Research Associate at the National Museums of Kenya.

There is much that a non-dualist or Advaitin or Nisargan can relate to by comparing and contrasting what Sapolsky reveals about the way certain troops of baboons live in Africa with the way that humans abide all around the globe.

This 152-page eBook catalogues the common, non-dual message shared by Sapolsky and Maharaj and reveals the ways that Sapolsky’s scientific research supports the non-dual pointers offered by Maharaj.

IV.
Seeking

In “PART ONE” it will be seen that most persons on the planet are not seeking, and most will never seek, but for those who are seeking, most will face several obstacles:

In “PART TWO” of this book, it will be seen why many criticized Maharaj for “changing his message in his later talks.” It will be seen that the changes were not about changing the message per se as much as about changing his methodology as he experimented with one version of the Ultimate Medicine after another in order to try to find an effective means for addressing the Ultimate Sickness.

He tried a religious version of the Medicine, a Spiritual version of the Medicine, and finally settled on a version which addressed to Sickness at its core . . . at the mental and emotional level.

V.
"THE MOST DANGEROUS BELIEF OF ALL"

“Dangerous” is a term that can only apply during the relative existence, but of those who do commit suicide, for example, how many shoot themselves in the foot over and over until they “bleed out”? None. They shoot themselves in the head. Why? In order to try to stop the noise - to try to stop the chatter of a thousand monkeys – to stop the noisy mind which is the area that stores the ideas, notions, concepts, mind-stuff, etc. which drives them into the depths of insanity.

And what are those ideas, notions, concepts, etc. called, collectively? "Their beliefs." The irony? They are not their beliefs at all. They are the beliefs of “others” that were set in place via programming, conditioning, etc. and which persons then think are their own.

And what are those beliefs rooted in, and what reinforces those beliefs and convinces persons that they are sacred and worth fighting over and even sometimes worth dying for? Blind faith.
