As for Maharaj, you will find here some of his early pointers for beginners but some of his later pointers that are for seekers father along the "path." During his last years, he said of I AM THAT: "That book and whatever was expounded at that time was only relevant for that period. I am speaking differently today" and am "emphasizing different aspects." What he offered later differed considerably from his earlier talks, making clear that the pointers in I AM THAT will take you to the midpoint of "the race" but that his final talks point the way to "the finish line."

F.: So what is the bottom line message regarding authenticity? The bottom line is that, in the absence of authenticity, person will become separated - not from the Authentic Self, that cannot happen - but separated from the awareness of that Authentic Self and the awareness of the Oneness.

Separated from the awareness of the Authentic Self and separated from awareness of the Awareness beyond, then persons will sense a separation from "others." It is that sense of distance and separation from "others" or "another" that is at the root of all relative misery and suffering.

Originally, you were at Home - the Original Home being Your Original Nature and Your Present Home being the Authentic Self. Neither is a "place" that has to do with anything personal. When the poet wrote an ode on "Intimations of Immortality," or when Advaitins discuss "The Nectar of Immortality," the use of the term "immortality" refers to nothing with even the slightest trace of personhood.

Yet the relative remains and must happen until mahasamadhi is taken, so this was asked recently by a confused site visitor:

"What sense at all is there in your statement that 'marriage and husbanding can happen even in the absence of a husband'?" Not only is there sense in the statement, there is the formula for freedom ... for relishing all of the varieties of essence that have been discussed in this series.

Little in the teachings is as misunderstood as the implication behind the summative statement of "I AM THAT; I AM." The implication is that a sense of "not two" can be felt even as the AM-ness continues and even after THAT is understood.

As an example, in the first posting in this series, reference was made to "the essence of knowing Love" and "to the essence of delighting in the physical expression of Love and the Oneness." "Knowing Love" comes with understanding THAT; the "physical expressions of Love and the Oneness" seems to many to be an act that can have nothing to do with anything other than the AM-ness.

That is a misperception that cannot be seen to be erroneous until the understanding of the differentiation in "love" and "Love" is grasped. In early May, this was offered:

When the relative act of sex happens alongside the manifestation of Real Love, the phenomenal act coincides with a noumenal awareness and results in a level of bliss that no one can ever experience unless both of those elements manifest, coincide, intersect, and merge simultaneously. Yet that can only happen post-Realization in the post-Awareness understanding of the first part of the following quotation from Maharaj:

"Love is knowing that I am Everything; Wisdom is knowing that I am nothing."

Now here's the back story on that offering: it was written in response to two e-mails received over a period of several weeks from Far Easterners who explained and complained to me that "you should be recommending abstinence on your site."

In assuming their new but false identity of THAT only, they are pretending that the relative dissolves as a result of their having reached such noumenal and spiritual heights.

If that dissolution really happened as a result of Realization, then the only chance for experiencing the essence of Love and Love's Expression would disappear as well because there are no physical rewards awaiting in some imaginary, upgraded "world" that one will supposedly abide in later and eternally.

For those who are using persons as sex objects to build up their own egos, yes, abstinence might be indicated if it would allow their focus to shift away from self-gratification and self-focus to the search instead for authenticity and for an understanding of the statement that "Love is knowing that I am Everything."

Yet on a site where Nisarga (Natural) living is recommended, no natural act can or will be blacklisted, advice from those assuming the role of "Spiritual Giants" notwithstanding.

Site regular Sim years ago said something to the effect that he "would rather tolerate some misery if it means he can also enjoy some pleasure." The suggestion was that all of what happens can and will continue to happen post-Realization but that the difference lies in emoting vs. feeling.

The point was made that only ego-states emote, and the result of emoting is that it sets off a chain of reactions that drive persons to take actions that are harmful to self or others, relatively speaking. Emotions set events in "motion," it has been noted, and usually the motion is accompanied by actions that bring about pain and / or suffering.

Can feelings not cause a sense of dis-ease as well? Of course they can. Warnings have been offered here about not only emotional intoxication but also about feelings intoxication; yet the Realized witness their feelings as they rise and fall without taking harmful action. For example, post-Realization, a marriage might continue or it might end.

If it ends, one or both members of that couple might feel the misery that comes to anyone sensing distance and separation. Yet if the Realized are involved in such an event, they will watch those feelings rise and fall or might even consciously process the feelings.

By contrast, ego-state-driven emotions can drive one to pick up a knife or gun and harm the partner, as happens in the U.S. where 59% of all women killed annually are killed during a "breakup."

The point? The Realized can and do relish all of the varieties of essence that the relative affords, and, yes, the Realized will still feel. Because it's happening in the relative, some feelings might be dualistically termed "positive" and some might be dualistically termed "negative."

In the end, though, all of the feelings will be witnessed as they rise and fall so that any sense of having just ridden a roller coaster through a trying event can be witnessed, yes, but can be witnessed without being accompanied by motion and emotion and actions and reactions that generate continuing or lasting relative harm.

The Realized are not immunized against all things relative; they are merely prepared for whatever the relative brings by feeling whatever feelings arise as a result of whatever happens while being exempted from ego-state-driven emotional intoxication around relative events.

Emotional intoxication can go on for decades, as with the man who made contact here recently who is still mourning the end of his marriage ... an event that happened eighteen years ago; by contrast, feeling intoxication and feelings are short-lived.

And that has always been the purpose of the postings on this site which, from day one, explained that the sharings here are about "Applied Advaita," even in the absence of "An Applier."

The invitation was then - and remains to this day - that you allow the teachings to be applied in regards to all things relative so that you can always return to the rest and respite of Home ... to the Authentic Self ... to the enjoyment of the Medicine Place ... and to Your Original Nature. "Sapolsky, Maharaj, and the Non-Dual Teachings"

In “PART ONE” it will be seen that most persons on the planet are not seeking, and most will never seek, but for those who are seeking, most will face several obstacles:

In “PART TWO” of this book, it will be seen why many criticized Maharaj for “changing his message in his later talks.” It will be seen that the changes were not about changing the message per se as much as about changing his methodology as he experimented with one version of the Ultimate Medicine after another in order to try to find an effective means for addressing the Ultimate Sickness.

He tried a religious version of the Medicine, a Spiritual version of the Medicine, and finally settled on a version which addressed to Sickness at its core . . . at the mental and emotional level.


“Dangerous” is a term that can only apply during the relative existence, but of those who do commit suicide, for example, how many shoot themselves in the foot over and over until they “bleed out”? None. They shoot themselves in the head. Why? In order to try to stop the noise - to try to stop the chatter of a thousand monkeys – to stop the noisy mind which is the area that stores the ideas, notions, concepts, mind-stuff, etc. which drives them into the depths of insanity.

And what are those ideas, notions, concepts, etc. called, collectively? "Their beliefs." The irony? They are not their beliefs at all. They are the beliefs of “others” that were set in place via programming, conditioning, etc. and which persons then think are their own.

And what are those beliefs rooted in, and what reinforces those beliefs and convinces persons that they are sacred and worth fighting over and even sometimes worth dying for? Blind faith.
