PERSPECTIVE: The Only Difference, Part Six

An Advaita forum focusing on Realisation, enlightenment, non-duality, Real Love, peace, freedom, Your original nature, abiding naturally, the Oneness, the Nothingness, and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

As for Maharaj, you will find here some of his early pointers for beginners but some of his later pointers that are for seekers farther along the "path." During his last years, he said of I AM THAT: "That book and whatever was expounded at that time was only relevant for that period. I am speaking differently today" and am "emphasizing different aspects." What he offered later differed considerably from his earlier talks, making clear that the pointers in I AM THAT will take you to the midpoint of "the race" but that his final talks point the way to "the finish line."

F.: The invitation offered via this series is to understand that the Fully Realized are no different from anyone who visits this site. That includes the actually Realized; the non-Realized who are seeking; the non-Realized who are not seeking; and those claiming Realization who think they have completed the entire "journey" but have not and are, therefore, trying to satisfy their ego-based desire to control others.

The only possible difference among all of those is in perspective, so certain perspectives here that might differ from perspectives held by "others" are being shared for consideration and - possibly - for further enlightenment.

During recent years, there has been an increase here in both the frequency of contact and the level of vehemence displayed by some claiming to be realized. Those self -appointed "Spiritual Giants" write to attack what is shared here and then to promote their perceptions and beliefs about "the Absolute" and about "the way they have been freed of all things relative" by way of the teachings they received "which are nothing like the wrong teachings offered here."

Yet if they were truly free of all things relative, would they be taking the time to write, would they be vehement about the content of these postings, and - mostly - would they even still be manifested and able to write anything, if freed of all things relative?

What they mean is that they have moved "there" and are abiding "there" and care not a whit about anything "here." There are consequences to being that out of touch with reality after believing that one is fully in touch with Reality.

A few months ago, a young man with that distorted perspective

- of what non-duality supposedly teaches and

- of what might as well happen post-Realization once it is seen that "nothing relative is real or matters" and

- of the uselessness of continuing to deal with anything relative at all

concluded that he might as well not work and might as well not complete any of his assigned tasks and, in fact, might as well kill himself and be done with having to deal with things relative and with the insane people he was having contact with on a daily basis.

Another different perspective here that has led to outbursts of anger from

a. those who think they are "the most spiritually fit" and from

b. those who think their version of the understanding is the only right one and from

c. those who think that only THAT matters and who think that "this" - the relative existence, the AM-ness - is to be ignored or even abandoned

is this:

11. In the end, if Full and True Realization has happened, then de-accumulating follows, along with enjoyment of the relative existence. Yes, the relative existence. As noted time and again here, the summative statement of non-duality remains "I AM THAT; I AM," even post-Realization. It is not re-written to "I AM THAT, ONLY."

The following perspective, too, has troubled many (who could not be troubled at all about what appears in these postings if they were enjoying the perspective that True Realization brings):

12. In fact, when mahasamadhi is taken, there will be no one to know THAT at all. There is no "benefit" at all to knowing the THAT-ness unless Reality is overlaid on the "this"-ness, on the AM-ness, on the present beingness, so that the bliss might be enjoyed at the only time and in the only place that it can be enjoyed, namely, NOW and HERE. There is no "later" or "there" for any "one."

And another perspective here that has troubled many is this:

13. If True Realization happens, the de-accumulation mentioned earlier will include a de-accumulation of all roles and assumed identities, including those dealing with self-ness, Self-ness, Infinite Self-ness, Supreme Self-ness, and God-Self-ness.

Here is the way it was explained yesterday in a note received from Bob R.:

The people who live on my street must wonder if I have lost my mind (little do they know I Am working on it) because I keep dragging stuff out to the drive way to give away or to leave curbside for trash.

Many months ago the de-accumulation actually included the material (books, tapes, cd's, etc.) as well as the seemingly endless piles of beliefs, concepts, attitudes, perspectives, programs, biases, etc.

What is now being seen that needs letting go of is different in that it seems to be of a more subtle nature, but in truth it is now providing substantially more freedom and lightness that that experienced at the beginning of this journey with Floyd serving as Tour (Tour de Freedom) Guide.

The most recent example and experience of this de-accumulation is a result of absorbing "Why Nisarga Yoga in Addition To The Advaita Teachings?" and having one pointer after the other profoundly reveal that this speck has been leaning heavily toward the "That"-ness rather than the "I Am-ness".

This imbalance and preference had resulted in not understanding what you cited:

"In the end, That is not about That at all. It is about "this', right NOW, because later, That Which Is will not even be known to be."

This pointer struck me like a heat-seeking laser missile striking me right between the eyes and dead on the heart simultaneously. So once again I find myself hauling more [items] out to the curb but with a sense of gratitude. Thanks, Bob

Not once in the months that these teachings / non-teachings were shared with Bob was it suggested that he get rid of all of the "stuff" he had accumulated; nor was that suggestion ever offered to Andy, nor to Mac, nor to the others that have come here and "gotten it."

But in the case of all three of those men and in the case of many others, de-accumulation simply began happening, and in every case, it happened spontaneously, without premeditation, without "mental debate," and without some grand scheme or plan being dreamed up.

As was the case here post-Realization, it just happened. And as with Bob, the process might begin with tossing out all of the materials that were thought to be religious and / or spiritual materials but will later include a tossing out of all of the accumulated spiritual paraphernalia and "supernatural" accoutrements as well;

however, the de-accumulating process will continue with a tossing out of all ideas and concepts and beliefs as well. Eventually, all of the effects of programming and conditioning and domestication and acculturation will also be discarded.

That is why it is clear that those who find this site and stay long enough to criticize and to attack are making clear how bogus their belief is that they have actually Realized;

and how bogus is their belief that their teaching method is the only right one; and how bogus their opinion is that their yoga is the only one that any non-duality teacher should be allowed to teach;

and they are also making clear how consumed they are with their lofty ego-state(s) and how arrogant they are to believe that they have the right to control what is shared and not shared by others;

and they are making clear how bigheaded and supercilious they are as they try to exercise their assumed "power" that has come with their assumption of the role of "Chairman of the Board of the Universe, in Charge of Space and Time and ... All."

The question is, "If they have been totally subsumed into THAT and are abiding 'there,' how is it that they are coming 'here' and addressing 'this'?"

Actually, they do not have a clue about why they are doing what they are doing, but the Truly Realized understand exactly what is driving them; and exactly what is driving their desire to control; and exactly what is driving their arrogance; and exactly what is driving their false belief that they have power; and exactly what is driving the misperception that they have realized when they have not.

So it is when the combination of learned ignorance and limitless arrogance and extreme narcissism are so solidly fixed that the dim light of dawn cannot even be distinguished from the noonday sun.

(And yes, this happy notion does come on occasion: "If only Maharaj were here literally and could offer some means by which those types could be tossed out of an electronic loft just as the same types were once tossed out of a physical loft on 10th Lane in the Khetwadi area.")

Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)

    PERSPECTIVE: The Only Difference, Part Five

    F.: Again, the invitation offered via this series is to understand that the Fully Realized are no different from anyone who visits this site. That includes the actually Realized; the non-Realized who are seeking; the non-Realized masses who are not seeking; and those claiming Realization who think they have completed the entire "journey" but have not.

    (Of the latter, Maharaj said that they mistakenly think that they are being bathed fully in the noonday sun when they are really only standing in the dim light of the dawn. So it is.)

    The only possible difference among all of those in the groups mentioned above is in perspective, so certain perspectives here that might differ from perspectives held by "others" are being shared for consideration and - possibly - further enlightenment.

    Next, another perspective here that differs from those held by most - including seekers as well as non-seekers - involves meditation. The actual contrast is between what meditation was originally about vs. what it is about nowadays after the process has been totally bastardized.

    10. The discussion of the use (and misuse) of meditation bothers many, especially those who have assumed the persona of being "A Very Spiritual Person," the evidence of which includes the fact that they practice meditation regularly (and then regularly tell people how faithfully they practice meditation in an effort to support their false persona).

    The suggestion is that if you have a regular meditation practice that you love because it is a key element of "your regular spiritual exercises," then you probably will not like the different perspective offered here.

    If you love being in a "super-conscious state,” don’t read this. If you love going into a trance, don’t read this. If you love the emotional surge of repeatedly experiencing "the rapture," don’t read this. For the rest who are not emotionally-intoxicated and who are capable of objectively taking pointers into consideration, then you might be interested.

    The fact is that many claiming realization, and most involved in the search, have so distorted the original intent of the meditative process that no early teacher of non-duality would even recognize what is called “meditation" today.

    If you are involved in a regular meditative practice, are you fully awake, completely aware, and totally conscious in order to focus on pointers offered by a Realized teacher, or do you have other motives and goals? If the latter, you might list the motives and goals and then ask, Who wants to gain more than the understanding of the Teaching and who wants something other than natural living for the remainder of the relative existence?”

    Admittedly, the "personal" meditative practices here during the early stages of the "journey" were like all of the other elements which amounted to nothing more than spiritual workaholism. With unbounded effort and obsessive practice, meditation was done in the same present day fashion that many others may have equaled but that few surpassed.

    After literally thousands of “meditative experiences,” Realization still did not come. All the bells and whistles and meditative aids and practices were eventually seen to be for nil because no guides or guidebooks suggested that the original purpose of meditation was only to take pointers into consideration.

    With no one offering sound pointers anyway, there was no chance at all of practicing meditation as originally intended; instead, the instructions of most who had written meditative guides were being followed, so what was sought was not an understanding of key pointers that could lead to Full Realization.

    Instead, what was sought was the “no-mind state”; what was being attempted was trying to force the “mind” to stop racing; what was sought was some “super-conscious state”; what was also sought in morning meditation was some kind of “spiritual experience” that would result in a peace that would last throughout the day;

    what was sought at other times was to have an overwhelming, “emotionally-rapturous experience.” Yet there was always eventual failure, never consistently reaching "my" ultimate goal. There was no permanent success at forcing the "mind” to alter to "my will” or to be quiet and to be at peace. There was no success at bending the "mind" to "the will of some Unseen Power" or into alignment with "The Will of the Universe" (as if either of those were real).

    To test how capable or incapable persons actually are at controlling their own mind and thoughts, protégés here are invited to conduct an experiment. Starting right now, be sure that you do not picture a monkey hanging by one arm from the limb of a tree in a jungle. Anything else that comes to mind is fine, but continue the exercise and, at all cost, do NOT picture a monkey hanging from a limb.

    Do not see its fist closed tightly around the limb of a jungle tree, the other arm hanging loosely by its side, the monkey swaying back and forth in the air. Are you NOT picturing a monkey? Avoid at all costs the image of a monkey arising in your mind.

    DON’T see a monkey hanging, a monkey swinging from a limb, a monkey screeching out its monkey sounds. Uh oh. It is suspected that you’re picturing a monkey. Please stop it. Force yourself, if you must, not to picture that monkey that is still hanging from a limb, still swinging back and forth, its free arm swaying at its side. DON’T picture a monkey.

    So how did you do with that experiment at controlling "your mind" and "your thoughts"? Has it been suggested to you by someone that you have the ability to control "your mind"? Has it been suggested that an entity in another realm can control "your mind" and change it to "your" advantage?

    Has it been suggested that the only thing that can restore you to sanity is an Unseen, Higher Power, usually conceptualized as an all-powerful male? Has it been a goal of "yours" to be able to calm "your mind"?

    Have fifteen to sixty minutes of meditative work per day proved effective at freeing you of a troublesome, variable mind during all of your remaining waking hours? If not, might another purpose of meditation exist, and might that purpose actually free you of the illusion of mind, once and for all?

    A dilemma exists for most who begin dabbling with meditation: how can a person force an over-active “mind” to be still? As with the monkey experiment, the very act of trying to “calm a mind” accelerates its movement even more. “Set a timer,” some advise. Fine, but when the timer sounds and the person continues with the activities of the day, those activities are still being conducted under the auspices of an ever-in-motion "mind";

    thus, no lasting peace will happen. The early sages assigned meditation with a specific intention, and reaching the “no-mind” state was not the intent. Meditation is intended to wake people up, not put them to sleep. Every entry in the Daily Meditation Guides offered here - as well as every posting on this site - all end with an invitation to enter the silence and then contemplate the point / pointers offered.

    At no time in the last twenty-two years has it ever been suggested that a student or visitor or guest or participant at a session “go into a trance,” “seek a super-conscious state as a regular habit,” or “experience the rapture.” Exercises conducted in the quiet along the “journey” are tools, yes, but when a homeowner’s house is built, he puts away his tools and then simply enjoys the new place he’s in. So it should be with the tool called "meditation" as well.

    (By the way, is some turbulence now being experienced around this discussion of meditation? If so, who is bothered? When a "spiritual practice" is questioned, only a spiritual persona can react and be “bothered,” revealing that one is "stuck" at the third of seven steps on "the path."

    It has been asked: “But Floyd, didn’t you tell me that during your days of regular meditation that you slowed your heart rate by seventeen beats per minute? That’s got to be healthy.” Of course it’s healthy. The same still happens ... during rest.)

    Meditation is a tool for those on a “journey,” enabling seekers who are receiving pointers from a Realized teacher to sit in the quiet, to remain fully awake, and to consider the pointers offered. The tool is to be used to lead to Realization.

    So, meditation was originally assigned with one specific purpose. The one specific intent was to provide a seeker with an invitation to be quiet, to stop all talking, and to take the opportunity to consider pointers offered by the teacher, pointers that can eventually remove from personas the false belief in the illusion of person … persona … personality ... self.

    After Realization, who could have any remaining goal? All who's end. Originally, only one purpose of meditation was intended: not to reach a "state without thought" but to consider a pointer offered until that point was understood.

    Consideration and understanding, not “motionless consciousness,” was the intent. Realization is marked by the recognized presence of re-purified consciousness. Realization is never about giving persons the ability to control or suppress the movements of contaminated or blocked consciousness or the ability to control or suppress the movements of a contaminated "mind."

    When modern-day meditative practices have either of those as a desire or goal, then the presence of personality and role-assumption is revealed. The original intent of entering into a period of meditation was to be fully awake, fully conscious, and fully aware, not to numb out the "mind" - which can never be numbed permanently anyway;

    however, the "mind" can be eliminated permanently. How? By permanently casting out the bogus content of the "mind"; thus, the pointer offered here is this: there is no such thing as "peace of mind"; there is only peace if you are out of your "mind."

    Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)

    PERSPECTIVE: The Only Difference, Part Four

    As for Maharaj, you will find here some of his early pointers for beginners but some of his later pointers that are for seekers farther along the "path." During his last years, he said of I AM THAT: "That book and whatever was expounded at that time was only relevant for that period. I am speaking differently today" and am "emphasizing different aspects." What he offered later differed considerably from his earlier talks, making clear that the pointers in I AM THAT will take you to the midpoint of "the race" but that his final talks point the way to "the finish line."

    F.: The invitation offered via this series is to understand that the Fully Realized are no different from anyone who visits this site. That includes the actually Realized;

    the non-Realized who are seeking; the non-Realized who are not seeking; and those claiming Realization who think they have completed the entire "journey" but have not.

    The only possible difference among all of those is in perspective, so certain perspectives here that might differ from perspectives held by "others" are being shared for consideration and - possibly - further enlightenment.

    6. Over the last twenty-two years, it has been asked thousands of times of the thousands of seekers or inquirers who have made contact here,

    "Is it possible that everything you have ever been told or taught or now believe is false?"

    The perspective with most? No. The perspective here? Yes.

    The fact: whatever any seeker has ever concluded that she / he understands, that is not the truth. The truth can be known but not stated. Any statement of supposed truth is a statement of non-truth.

    Is that a different perspective from the one you have held?

    7. Some teachers assign mantras. Here, no mantras have ever been assigned. [Following his guru's orders, Maharaj assigned mantras early on; later, he abandoned the practice.] One of the more popular mantras over the years with some teachers and seekers has been "I AM."

    The rationale of the assignment was sound to the degree that the plan was to condition seekers to stop placing any word(s) after the phrase "I am," such as, "I am ... a spouse"; "I am ... a lover"; "I am ... an employee"; etc. To stop at "I AM" might have had the intended effect, or not.

    Yet here, once a fact is known, the question to be considered is, "Is there really a need to repeat constantly a recognized fact?" Consider how many times you have heard someone declare, "That person's nuts!" or "That person's crazy!" or "He / she is the most insane person I have ever met!"

    Once you see that the masses are insane, is there any need to reaffirm that conclusion multiple times per day? It's a fact. Be done with it and turn the focus to yourself, to your selves. Heal thyself, for those "others" are not coming to you for healing. They are moving about in their sleep, in their dream, and to be awakened requires that they be shaken, and they actually have no desire at all to be shaken by you. So it is.

    Address the only insanity that you can address: your own. And as one need not point out the insanity of humanity over and over and over again, do you really need to remind yourself all day long, "I am, I am, I am"?

    No other living thing - no deer, no bird, no fish - has ever forgotten that it IS. The manifested consciousness knows automatically that it is. Relax. Take it easy. It is the silence - not chanting, humming, singing, shouting, bell ringing, reciting mantras, reciting prayers in unison, or incessant talking - which will better serve the seeker of peace.

    [It just might be that the most "spiritual" pointer you will ever hear is, "Will you please just shut up, if only for a few minutes? Can you do that? Can you just be quiet, even if only for a little while?" That's a very different perspective, yes? Especially in noisy Western cultures where it is freedom of speech - rather than freedom from speech - that is so highly regarded.]

    Is that a different perspective from the one you have held?

    8. Speaking of different perspectives and spirituality, there are those who report that they are seeking "spiritual growth." They may as well seek the will-of-the-wisp, a unicorn, sasquatch, and a bird's nest on the bottom of a sea.

    How could "spirit" - whatever that is supposed to be - grow? That is duality, to seek to move from one level to another higher level. What dualistic concept is more widespread around the globe than the concept of "hierarchies"?

    Maharaj said, "You will get maturity quickly if you would stay put in your 'nothingness'." Children loves to play games where they assume roles. The mature play no roles, accept no roles.

    That includes the roles of "The Spiritually-Mature One" or "The Super Religious One" or "The Spiritual Giant" (all of whom are tortured constantly by the all-pervasive throngs of "spiritual pygmies" that have to be dealt on a daily basis. Talk about a "false-self"-imposed crisis.)

    Is that a different perspective from the one you have held?

    9. Yes, there are two witnessing stages: the Subject-Object Witnessing stage and the Pure Witnessing (True Self) stage; yet even focusing on witnessing and / or on Witnessing is doingness.

    The uninterrupted peace comes when even observing comes to an end, for to observe is to inspire concluding, and concluding can inspire judging or analyzing or thinking. Where is the rest and peace in any of that?

    As with the widespread insanity observable on the planet, widespread observing and witnessing of the actions of "others" - and then dealing with all that accompanies such activities - will prevent uninterrupted freedom and peace. Once you know that what you observe is not as it appears anyway, wherefore observe and witness and register more and more information? Is that a different perspective from the one you have held?

    The perspectives here, in the end, have not come from any special or supposedly "holy" literature; from any outer guru (including Maharaj); or from any source other than "My Own Experience" and "My Own Vision."

    Yet, there have been "catalysts" that allowed for the blooming of the understanding and the freedom-bringing, peace-sustaining perspectives that accompany the understanding; therefore, these considerations are shared as potential catalysts for seekers so that they might have "Their Own Experience" that will also lead to the understanding and to freedom and to peace.

    Also in the end, the Truth that cannot be stated can be known, within. Sometimes, all that is required is for a cool breeze to blow away the last clouds that are obstructing the Light. Sometimes, storms are needed because so many blockages and obstacles have been set in place by programming, conditioning, domestication and acculturation. That is why here, either gentle breezes or severe storms might be unleashed, depending on each seeker's circumstances. So it is.

    Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)
