THE FINAL FIFTEEN TOPICS DISCUSSED BY SRI NISARGADATTA MAHARAJ, Part Seven

An Advaita forum focusing on Realisation, enlightenment, non-duality, Real Love, peace, freedom, Your original nature, abiding naturally, the Oneness, the Nothingness, and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

As for Maharaj, you will find here some of his early pointers for beginners but some of his later pointers that are for seekers farther along the "path." During his last years, he said of I AM THAT: "That book and whatever was expounded at that time was only relevant for that period. I am speaking differently today" and am "emphasizing different aspects." What he offered later differed considerably from his earlier talks, making clear that the pointers in I AM THAT will take you to the midpoint of "the race" but that his final talks point the way to "the finish line."

[Note: These discussions are excerpts from a book that will be released by Amazon.com on December 12, 2011]

A visitor asked: "So what is your take on the topics that you said Maharaj discussed at the end?"

F.: Next, the "take" here will be offered on the seventh of the final fifteen topics discussed by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, specifically,

STABILIZING IN REALITY AND TRUTH

In his final talks, Maharaj offered the following pointer / caution: "Consciousness can never remain inactive; it will always be busy - that is its nature." The question then becomes, "How can one address that constant activity and movement and then stabilize?"

Maharaj noted that "When you come here, you have certain expectations, certain aspirations, but after listening to my talks, you lose all that."

Thus, he implies, to be free of the ever-active, always busy consciousness, all expectations must go, all aspirations must go.

In the talks and writings of those called "The Big Name Teachers" by Maharaj, they will suggest that you can "gain it all." The talks or writings of those whose sole income is derived from standing in pulpits and behind podiums will include words which suggest that you can "gain it all."

The talks or writings of a Realized teacher of non-duality will never include the suggestion that you can gain it all. Quite to the contrary, as Maharaj noted, you must lose all; however, recall that in the previous chapter, one who awoke to the fact that such was Maharaj's "plan" complained: "Maharaj is taking everything away from me. I have nothing to hold onto - I will fall." How typical.

As for "the take" here, what have visitors lost who have come for satsang or retreats over the last two decades? Some lost nothing because they came to gain, and they left without gaining anything (except for a few new resentments, in some cases. So it is).

But some felt the result of sharings as they trigger a resonance within, the resonance which becomes activated when seekers finally realize that they are hearing something that is pointing directly to Truth (and to a Truth which they has never sensed before). That resonance can begin as a quiver, can grow into a shudder, can increase to a pulsating throb, and can intensify to such a high level of vibration that it might feel at first like a very rude shaking.

That shaking can become so intense and so brusque - and can produce such a jolt - that an awakening can no longer be avoided. [That is what is called here the moment of "peripetia."] Yet who that is asleep wants to be shaken in so abrupt a manner? Few.

However, if they are willing to see that what they have been clinging to was all false, then they can continue along the "path," can understand that they must "lose all," and can, spontaneously, become willing to do so. Really? "Lose it all"? Yes. Including?

Including all knowledge (that is, all learned ignorance); including the so-called knowledge offered by the teacher, that knowledge having been presented only to alleviate ignorance (so once the ignorance goes, so does any requirement of knowledge);

including belief in any and all concepts, thoughts, ideas, dogma, theories, views, spiritual principles, dualistic perceptions, and notions about "former, 'bad' selves" as well as their belief in their "newly-assumed 'good' or 'lofty' or 'elevated' or 'noble' or 'supreme' or 'Supreme' selves";

including all personality-driven fears and desires; including all of the effects of programming, conditioning, domestication, and acculturation; including all identity, which includes identification with the body; which includes all identification with the fictionalized, myth-based content of the "mind";

and which includes identification with all of the false personas / roles / characters / states-of-being / that have been assigned and / or adopted over the years (often numbering in the hundreds over the length of the relative existence).

Yet so few are willing to discard or "lose" all of that which has blocked their seeing of Truth, namely, all of that which they have believed to be the truth and which, in turn, ended their seeking prematurely, long before they came anywhere close to finding Reality and Truth and stability.

To address that, Maharaj encouraged seekers to "understand what consciousness is [and understand that] consciousness is not an individual. The basis and source of consciousness is in the material. What I say is still in the conceptual world, and you need not accept it as truth. Nothing in the conceptual world is true."

Maharaj was asked about the all-too-common lack of willingness to abandon belief in the false identifications referenced above:

Questioner: "Even when I have an intuitive understanding of this, what is this reluctance to give up all that I am not?"

He replied: "You have not stabilized firmly in that understanding. Your conviction should be such that no question at all should arise in the future about that. For example, a person is dead and has been cremated; it is all over. Is there any question about that? Like that, it will be all over."

What was he willing to "lose," to forfeit, once he began to witness objectively?

" Watching ... thoughts and concepts, I came to the conclusion that whatever is happening is in the consciousness. All kinds of things were happening - thoughts and experiences - and they were credited to my account; but once I have seen what it is, all those account books have been burned and I no longer have any account. How amusing it is to see someone who thinks of himself as an individual, who thinks of himself as a doer or achiever."

Thus, he dismissed the not-true as he pointed to Truth. As for stabilizing in Reality, he shared the following in his final talks:

First, to review, he said: "My dwelling place in the grosser world is gone now; presently it is in the subtler sphere, as in space"

and

"As you stabilize in the consciousness, dispassion for the body and for the expressions through the body occurs spontaneously. It is a natural renunciation, not a deliberate one. It does not mean that you should neglect your worldly duties; carry these out with full zest."

He said: "Just now I was lying down in the waking state, but with no perceiving or receiving of any words, something like a prior-to-words state. Now the last traces of personality or individuality have left me."

He then said: "The effect of these talks is that you will stabilize in the very source from which the words sprout. Abiding in the dynamic, manifest consciousness is abiding in the words of the Guru. The meaning of the mantra I have given you is that you are the manifest, dynamic principle, not the body. When you abide in that, you become that."

He said: "Consciousness is there in the child as it is in the parents; it is always the same consciousness whether in the child or the adult. There is only one consciousness [meaning, the pure consciousness. The problem is that the pure witnessing, the pure consciousness, becomes blocked ... some even say, "corrupted"].

He added, "You must become one with and stabilize in that [pure] consciousness; then, you transcend it. That consciousness is your only capital. Understand it."

As he continued in his final talks to speak more and more about stabilizing, he said: "Language energy and vital breath energy should merge and stabilize; otherwise, if you allow them to go outward, they will be dissipated. If you want peace, stabilize at that point where you started to be. Stay put there"

and then, the end result is that

after "having stabilized in the consciousness, the next step is to be in a position to observe the consciousness, and all the play that is happening in the consciousness, just to understand. Attachment to the body and to the consciousness is very strong; to get rid of it is very difficult."

He said: " ... that consciousness principle is there at that center. As you merge into the world, the movement increases. Watch that center point, watch that movement of consciousness. That central, stationary point of the wheel watches the movement of consciousness. The one that observes the movement is almost stationary. To bring about the actions of the world — the movement — consciousness must descend. If there is no consciousness, there is no worldly movement. Similarly, you must become stabilized in a more stationary position, near the center. When you leave that center point, the movement takes over."

If the means by which You can stability in Reality and Truth is not yet 100% clear, then the full "take" here on the topic is available in the book "Instability / Insanity: What the Advaita Teachings Can (and Cannot) Address."

Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)

THE FINAL FIFTEEN TOPICS DISCUSSED BY SRI NISARGADATTA MAHARAJ, Part Six

F.: Next, the "take" here will be offered on the sixth of the final fifteen topics discussed by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj:

THE USELESSNESS OF KNOWLEDGE (A.K.A., LEARNED IGNORANCE)

In most circles, the one assuming the role of "The Know-It-All" is usually found to be rather repugnant or even disgusting. Contrast "The Know-It-All" with one such as Maharaj that understood it all.

To have Realized Fully and to understand the functioning of the totality has nothing to do with knowledge or knowing. Of that, Maharaj said, "The knower comes and goes with the known, and is transient; but that which knows that it does not know ... is timeless."

"The Know-It-Alls" value their knowledge because they believe that the display of said knowledge enhances their image with "others." The displaying of their knowledge - be it their "always-false-worldly knowledge" or be it their "always-false-other-worldly (or 'spiritual') knowledge" - is intended to try to separate them from those they believe to be ignorant and "less spiritual" and is used to try to elevate "The Knowledge-Holder's" perceived rank or status.

Maharaj said of those types, "You are afraid that whatever so-called knowledge you have collected is being devalued." In turn, those who are proud of their accumulated knowledge also fear being devalued if they do not cling to their so-called knowledge or stop trying to share their so-called knowledge. What knowledge-based arrogance, yes?

The one that understands the functioning of the totality - and is willing to point seekers toward the Truth that cannot be stated but that can be known from within - is not one that gives knowledge but is one the frees earnest seekers of the delusion that there is more external knowledge that must be attained.

Of that, Maharaj said: "How did I get to the truth that I prevail everlastingly? I understand what my true nature is. Nobody had told me how to do it. I did not seek this knowledge externally. It sprouted within me."

He said: "There are two ways of receiving the knowledge [I AM]. One way is you are taught the knowledge, you receive it externally. Another way is, the knowledge grows from inside, intuitively."

Realize, therefore, that the True Knower (that is, the knower of the "Am-ness" and of the Self) removes both "worldly" and "spiritual" knowledge. Thus, the "take" here is that there is no "Teacher" and that there is no teaching. There is only "un-teaching," de-programming, de-conditioning, de-acculturating, and de-domesticating.

To that end, Maharaj said, "You come here because you are ignorant, not because you are knowledgeable. This knowledge I give is only to remove ignorance."

He said, "Those who come here with the idea of getting knowledge, even spiritual knowledge, come here as individuals aspiring to get something; that is the real difficulty. The seeker must disappear"

    and

"Some people come here for knowledge. I talk because the words naturally come out. There is no intention behind my talks that you should get knowledge."

See? The pointers that Maharaj offered were not intended to add to one's "body of knowledge." The pointers were intended to eradicate that so-called body of knowledge (which is really nothing more or less than total ignorance - total learned ignorance).

Of ignorance and knowledge, Maharaj said in his final talks: "Ignorance will remain there for all time just as knowledge also will remain for all time. There cannot be knowledge without ignorance and there cannot be ignorance without the correlated knowledge. Both are the opposites in manifestation. One cannot remain without the other. Even this concept about knowledge is merely a concept. With a jñani, there is no concept of either ignorance or knowledge. The total absence of all knowledge or ignorance is that state prior to the arising of consciousness. But you try to interpret whatever I say with various concepts and you condition yourself with all these concepts."

That which can be pointed to with the term "True Knowledge" cannot be taught ... and need not be. It is already within and can be tapped into via the inner guru or the inner resource. It cannot be taught and it cannot be learned. It is already the Known and the intuitive Knowingness (which is unknown to those that have been programmed and conditioned and domesticated and acculturated).

Maharaj said: "Any image you have of yourself is not true. True knowledge is to abide in your own Self. Try to understand all this knowledge which you are now gathering. The so-called knowledge you get elsewhere talks only about ignorance; it cannot talk about the Self, true knowledge. All of what is pursued by the mind, it is not true knowledge. True knowledge cannot be understood easily. If I had the experience 'I Am" before, would I care to enter the womb of my mother? Prior to entering the womb I did not know myself. There was no knowledge of 'I Amness'. "

If Marahaj's pointer was correct, namely, that "all so-called knowledge is tainted by words, which is only ignorance," why listen to a guru? Why read these words? To listen to the guru or to read these words is not to gain. It is to lose ... to lose all, including all identities, ideas, concepts, beliefs and attitudes.

Thus, one visitor to Maharaj's loft who was not ready to abandon all identities, ideas, concepts, beliefs and attitudes complained: "Maharaj is taking everything away from me. I have nothing to hold onto -I will fall."

In that regard, Maharaj said, "The factual state of affairs is open, very clear, but nobody wants to look at it. This is the place where the intellect gets annihilated."

How did that which must be taken away come in the first place?

Maharaj said: "I do not follow the spirituality of the masses. In this place spirituality of the common type will not be doled out to you. That Ultimate You can never be lost; whatever you have lost, you have lost only the words. That Ultimate You knows or feels "I Am" without words. Through this "I Am" comes the 'world knowledge'."

So the first knowingness is knowing the "I AM." All else that is known comes by way of being taught, and everything that is taught is false. The truth can be known, but it cannot be stated, so all that is said - all that is stated with words - is false. Again, Maharaj said, "All so-called knowledge is tainted by words, which is only ignorance."

When he said that knowledge is merely learned ignorance, he was referring specifically to what he called "world knowledge" which is also the same as "religious knowledge" and "spiritual knowledge":

Again, "I do not follow the spirituality of the masses. In this place spirituality of the common type will not be doled out to you. That Ultimate You can never be lost; whatever you have lost, you have lost only the words. That Ultimate You knows or feels 'I Am' without words. Through this 'I Am' comes 'world knowledge'."

He said in his final talks, "What I am expounding does not relate to worldly knowledge. You do not want to give up either worldly knowledge or so-called spiritual knowledge, and yet, through these worldly concepts, you want to understand the riddle of your existence, and that is precisely why you are not able to understand."

Of the accumulation of "worldly knowledge," he said to one visitor during one of his final talks: "You are very adept at word-games. While I am talking about knowledge that is beyond this phenomenal world, you are trying to understand through worldly concepts and words. Give up all these concepts and inquire into the nature of your beingness. How did you happen to be? Ponder it! The real blessing of the Guru comes when your knowledge itself sprouts inside you."

He said, "If you continue in the realm of intellect you will become entangled and lost in more and more concepts."

He added: "You have a lot of knowledge but it pertains to the practical world. So far you have not got the knowledge of the Self. I will not talk about the worldly knowledge."

At the end, that is what Maharaj offered to take away: worldly knowledge (a.k.a., "learned ignorance"); religious knowledge (a.k.a., "learned ignorance"); spiritual knowledge (a.k.a., "learned ignorance"); and all identities, ideas, concepts, beliefs and attitudes (a.k.a., "learned ignorance").

He said, "Subsequent to that 'I Am' and body-mind [that is, following the manifestation of the consciousness and the assumption of false identifications] there occurs what you call 'spiritual seeking' or 'spiritual knowledge'. This is nonsense."

That is, there is no worldly knowledge to be learned and no spiritual knowledge to be learned because the teachers of either or both are teaching nonsense. The Realized guru goes about the task of removing nonsense, not offering more nonsense.

How did that which must be taken away - that which is to be discarded, that which is no different from the garbage piled up after a holiday and that is stinking up your relative environment - come to be in the first place? And what does this have to do with a sense of bondage and a sense of liberation?

Maharaj: "You did not know your own existence after you were born. Nine months in the womb and for sometime afterwards that 'I am so and so' is absent. When you start recognizing your mother, then you also come to be aware of your own existence. That 'I Amness' comes sometime later. Mother teaches you, in ignorance, that you are the body and you begin to believe that. Your mind also starts slowly to develop. So right from the beginning, because of ignorance, the Absolute does not know itself; and because of the body, it started knowing that it is - 'I AM'. Because of the ignorance, you had to ask somebody, 'Who am I?'; otherwise, you would not have asked anybody. Even so-called incarnations such as Rama were like this, they had to be taught. The incarnations are just like you. The bondage with the body came because of wrong teaching, and then the guru came and told you that you are not the body, and then you were liberated. That is why all these births are taking place. If you knew of the bondage, you would refuse the birth. But because the 'I Amness' is absent, you are trapped. Because the 'I Amness' is a quality of the body, later on you come to know you are and that you are trapped. But once You know, you are liberated."

Thus, in his final talks, Maharaj emphasized the uselessness of knowledge and intellect and "the mind." He said:

"I have no use for traditions or traditional knowledge. If you do the slightest research on tradition you will see that it is all a concept. I am concerned with only one fact. Here I was in my wholeness, not even aware of my awareness, then suddenly this consciousness sprang up. How did it come about? That is the question which needs investigating."

He said, "What you are doing is using your mind and intellect, but what I say is not based on the intellect, but rather on whatever comes up spontaneously in consciousness. You try to fix that knowledge which springs spontaneously from consciousness into the structure of concepts you have built out of the mind and intellect. This can never happen."

Again, he said: "This is the place where the intellect gets annihilated."

He said, "When you get this knowledge [of the falsity of the birth and all that is inaccurately perceived in the realm of the relative], You will realize that knowledge of this world and consciousness are not even worth your spit. You can spit it out; it will be unworthy. I appeal to you with my folded hands, don't get into this spirituality. Whatever knowledge and concepts you are having, only that final spark is to be applied. You have everything; the raw material is already with you; the symbol of birth and death is already removed"

    and

"Whatever you think of as spiritual knowledge was gained in the realm of consciousness; such knowledge is merely a burden upon your head and it is going to add more misery. It is nothing more than spiritual jargon."

He noted: "You are bent on having knowledge at the most mundane level, but whatever knowledge you collect is bound to disappear"

    and

"Whatever you have placed before me as knowledge are all mistaken concepts"

    and

"When you come to the end of material world-knowledge, at that stage you transcend the observer and the observed. That means that you are in a true state of beingness. Thereafter you enter the state of transcending beingness, where the identities of the observer and observed disappear."

Then the end of knowledge can come and the fiction-filled mind can go:

Maharaj: "All my knowledge has gone into liquidation"

    and

    Maharaj: "Go to zero concepts"

    and

    Maharaj: "I have no mind."

Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)

THE FINAL FIFTEEN TOPICS DISCUSSED BY SRI NISARGADATTA MAHARAJ, Part Five

F.: Next, the "take" here will be offered on the fifth of the final fifteen topics discussed by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj:

HOW THE RELATIVE CAN AND SHOULD CONTINUE POST-REALIZATION ONCE REALITY HAS BEEN OVERLAID UPON IT

As noted in the book "SRI NISARGADATTA MAHARAJ and HIS EVOLUTION," the shifts in the advice Maharaj offered about the way that the relative existence should unfold - even post-Realization - drew criticism.

The disparaging remarks came then - and continue to come today - from those who are fixated in the role of "The Super Religious One" and / or "The Spiritual Giant" and who prefer to hear only the early pointers from Maharaj that reinforce their newly-assumed-but-totally-false-identities.

One who heard some of his later pointers which suggested abiding naturally rather than supernaturally (that is, abiding naturally rather than "religiously" or spiritually") charged that - after the time of the talks in the book I AM THAT - Maharaj "declined."

Yet what Maharaj came to see was that the most blissful leg of the "journey" was not the leg that led to Realization but was actually the leg that occurred from that point forward, namely, "the post-Realization relative existence leg."

In his later teachings, he emphasized that the true "purpose" of following the "path" to its end was to be able to overlay Reality upon the relative and thereafter to relish the shift from (a) the way that the pre-Realization relative existence had unfolded to (b) the fashion in which the post- Realization relative existence happens (that is, sanely, naturally, normally and without chaos, without being driven by ignorance and personality, and without mental and emotional instability).

    At the end, therefore, Maharaj confessed that he, too, had been bogged down at what is identified here as the third step of seven (the religious or spiritual step on the seven-step "path");

he made clear that he was trying to spare seekers from the years or decades of being similarly bogged down. He said: "I got involved in spirituality, in the business of spirituality, [but] finally I lost that love of the Self also. I have no more love for the Self."

Prior to Realization, persons are in love with self, with the false self / false selves that are initially assigned by their culture as well as the other roles that they later adopt on their own. Post-Realization, many are in love with the Self, with what they take to be a "new and improved and lofty and elevated identity."

That newly-assumed identity that so many love might be called "The True Self," "The Real Self," "THAT," "That In Whom Reside All Beings," "The Supreme Soul," "That Which Permeates All," "The Supreme Non-Dual Brahman" ... etc.

Maharaj admits that, when he had been absorbed in the business of spirituality, he had assumed such labeling and - as a result - fell in love with his newly-assumed identity of Self. But in the end, he renounced even that (false) identity.

Just as he had earlier fallen out of love with the false self / selves, so too did he eventually fall out of love with the identification of "The Real Self." What version of "love" remained? Only that version which can pointed to with the phrases "Real Love" or "True Love" - that is, the version of Love that knows the unicity.

After that, Maharaj finally paid unwavering allegiance to the message implied in the name "Nisargadatta." His recommendation thereafter was to abide naturally, not unnaturally and not supernaturally (i.e., not religiously or spiritually or in a way that requires magical, myth-based thinking).

He did offer early on certain "flashes" or "glimpses" of the shift in his message that was to come. Recall that he had said, "When the birth is disproved, the great noble meaning of spirituality and the meaning of this world—everything—is disproved.”

When a visitor said, "The scriptures say that we have our karma and our sins and that is why we are here," Maharaj answered: "That is for the ignorant masses. One who has realized the Self-Knowledge 'I Am,' for him these stories are of no use."

In the end, the "goal" of Maharaj (and in the teachings as presented by this author) were to

    1. remove the ignorance that inspires attachment to religious or spiritual or philosophical identities and concepts and exercises and accoutrements and to

    2. bring to an end all thoughts and words and deeds that support unnatural / supernatural living, giving way to

    3. living in an all-natural fashion as one's original nature.

The "later Maharaj," therefore, offered less and less tolerance for those "hanging out" at the third of seven steps to Realization. Yes, the religious or spiritual or philosophical roles have to be played for a time, but the longer Maharaj taught, the less tolerant he was of those fixating at a place on the "path" that is not even the halfway point of the "journey."

Thus, even early on, he spoke of their "kindergarten spirituality." He noted that "there are so many who take the dawn for the noon, a momentary experience for full realisation .... "

For all the spiritual and religious and philosophical talk in I AM THAT, the most direct pointers he offered contained less and less of the earlier "beating around the bush"; thus - later on in his "teaching career" - he said to two visitors, "Forget spirituality."

Later on, he also encouraged seekers to follow "their normal inclinations," that is, to follow their natural tendencies, to abandon all of their spiritual work and just abide naturally. He told visitors, "Do your normal duties" and "just give up spirituality."

He said, "Whatever spiritual things you aspire to know are all happening in this objective world, in the illusion. All this is happening in the objective world. All is dishonesty. There is no truth in this fraud"

    and

"Only that person will visit this place whose virtue and sin have come to an end"

    and

"There is no question of elevating to a higher level. Here it is only a question of understanding"

    and

"Both the mantra and the faith in the mantra will get dissolved"

    and

    "There is no progress."

"Spiritual knowledge should not be studied," he said, advising seekers to take the words of the guru which can, in turn, guide you to contact with the inner guru, with the inner resource; then, one can be done with seeking.

In suggesting the way that the post-Realization existence should unfold, he cautioned visitors to see that their religious and spiritual activities were really based in the selfish, dualistic desires and fears that are rooted in personality. He said:

"First of all you identify something as being good or bad for yourself. Then, in an effort to acquire good or to get rid of the bad, you have invented a God. Then you worship such a God and ... you pray to that God for something good to happen to you."

He said, “Whatever you have tried to understand during your spiritual search will prove false”

    and

“From birth, what has made the body grow? It is no power in the world. It is the power of beingness ..."

    and

“When the birth is disproved, the great noble meaning of spirituality and the meaning of this world—everything—is disproved”

    and

“If [persons] come face-to-face with that root, they will be stunned into silence.”

Maharaj also said: “I have no faith in anything which has ever been told, not even what has been told by the Vedas. Only my own experience.”

In his final talks, Maharaj said: "You can watch the body, so you are not the body. You can watch the breath, so you are not the vital breath. In the same way, you are not the consciousness; but you have to become one with the consciousness. As you stabilize in the consciousness, dispassion for the body and for the expressions through the body occur spontaneously. It is a natural renunciation, not a deliberate one. It does not mean that you should neglect your worldly duties; carry these out with full zest."

Yes, allow all in the post-Realization ("worldly") existence to happen with "full zest." That is the way that the relative existence should happen after Realization. Then, sane and natural living can unfold while witnessing only, and it will happen without attachment or delusion or wishing or desiring or fearing:

Maharaj: "Those who have comprehended and who have reached a certain stage will not ask for anything, but everything will come to them spontaneously. There will be no wish for it; nevertheless, it will be there. This does not happen for an individual — it happens for the universal manifestation, or for the one who has become one with his true nature. For the jnani, only witnessing is taking place."

After Realization, then the relative existence can unfold without the encumbrance of doingness and without belief in a "doer who must always be doing."

Maharaj: "Deal with the consciousness only ... get to know it thoroughly. That is all that can be done. Later on, everything happens spontaneously; doership goes. Know the inside-out of consciousness and recognize it as useless; it is a fraud."

He made clear in his final talks exactly how the relative can and should continue post-Realization, but with reality having been overlaid upon it, advising seekers to live "just as you wake up spontaneously and fall asleep spontaneously. Don't make any effort."

In his final talks, he emphasized the fact that "... no effort is necessary; in fact, effort itself is a hindrance. It is intuitive understanding."

He also suggested that seekers should " ... keep quiet. Once you are quiet, things will begin to happen spontaneously and quite naturally without any interference on your part."

In the end, he said, "Just live your life as it comes, but alertly, watchfully, allowing everything to happen as it happens, doing the natural things the natural way, suffering, rejoicing -- as life brings. What needs be done is being done, in the normal and natural way."

He urged seekers to be free from having their thoughts and words and deeds driven by the unconscious motives of personality / personalities and to enjoy " ... freedom from all motivation," explaining that such is "the state in which no desire arises is the natural state."

Then he recommended abiding in a nisarga (natural) fashion, calling that which is understood via the Nisarga Yoga "the art of living in peace and harmony, in friendliness and Love. The fruit of it is happiness, uncaused and endless."

When asked what should be done after Realization, his answer at the end would be to "Do nothing; just be. In being all happens naturally." He said, "All will happen by itself. You need not do anything, only don't prevent it"

    and

"You need not seek anything; all will come to you most naturally and effortlessly."

Once he began to abide naturally, he said, then "spontaneity became a way of life, the real became natural, and the natural became real." Then, above all, he said, there would be "infinite affection and Love ... radiating in all directions, embracing all, making all interesting and beautiful ...."

He said, "The only happiness worth the name is the natural happiness of conscious being"

    and

"You will recognise that you have returned to your natural state by a complete absence of all desire and fear." He taught: "Turn away from your desires and fears and from the thoughts they create ..."

    and

"Go beyond, back to your normal, natural, supreme state."

Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)

    WHAT SOME READERS HAVE SAID:

From Robert R.: "The Final Words" has been packing a power and succinctness, pointing to the nisarga "beingness" as opposed to the tendency to make just another cognitive exercise / understanding of Advaita Vedanta and pointing to the importance of not allowing the Advaitin / Nisarga message to become just another philosophy but to be lived, resulting in the deconstruction of any and all identification with body, mind, personality, etc.

I just wanted to thank you. "When Only Three Hours Of Manifestation Remain" is without question the most powerful, concise, catalytic piece of Your work that I have absorbed (and I have absorbed all that has been written). Just as Maharaj's teaching was refined in the latter part of his life, Your teaching has powerfully shifted (and that is no small feat given its already existing purity / essence). Peace, Light and Love, Bob

From Jo H.: My heart grows with your existence. Thank you. Love, Jo

From Ginny: Your writings are a source of comfort. Thank You for continuing to chronicle. You have important work in the relative. Know that what You have exposed has changed my life, allowed Real Life. Words are not coming out right, but please feel the Loving intent.

This is one of Your strongest pieces and allows folk to read, again and again if needed, that energy (which is Us) is Love. Real Love. So, the membrane of separation thins, till there is none.
