QUOTATIONS AND POINTERS DEALING WITH NON-DUALITY, ADVAITA, AND NISARGA YOGA, Part Twenty-Two

An Advaita forum focusing on Realisation, enlightenment, non-duality, Real Love, peace, freedom, Your original nature, abiding naturally, the Oneness, the Nothingness, and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

As for Maharaj, you will find here some of his early pointers for beginners but some of his later pointers that are for seekers farther along the "path." During his last years, he said of I AM THAT: "That book and whatever was expounded at that time was only relevant for that period. I am speaking differently today" and am "emphasizing different aspects." What he offered later differed considerably from his earlier talks, making clear that the pointers in I AM THAT will take you to the midpoint of "the race" but that his final talks point the way to "the finish line."

[Note: These quotations and pointers are excerpts from a book to be released by Amazon.com in late 2011]

F.: Regular visitors to the site know that they receive a preview of the content of any upcoming releases before Amazon.com publishes those books.

The following is excerpted from
"Quotations Regarding ADVAITA, NON-DUALITY, NISARGA YOGA"

PART THREE, "Quotations and Pointers by Category and Subject Matter from Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj"

REGARDING NO "BIRTH" - NO "DEATH"

NO "BIRTH"
"This consciousness is dead to me; it is gone. I have transcended that. So whatever is, is that other consciousness, that one which is without concepts. The principle that is conceptual and full of qualities [that is, "Brahman"] which I transcended, was like a very big ocean. Now it is mostly dried up; just the dregs remain. Only a very little bit is still there - only a few particles. What is pervading and prevailing is without concept or quality. What remains is talking to you now. Where is the question of birth or death for that remaining principle?"

"All knowledge is like the son of a barren woman. Presently there are only beingness and the functioning. The individuality and personality are thrown overboard. There is no personality, so there is no question of birth, life, or death. What remains is only the consciousness without name or form. There is no individuality at all. The form needs a name, but when both are not there, then the consciousness remains only so long as the body is there, but without any individuality. The body is of as much use now as it was prior to the birth and after the death. How do you know Me? You know me only on the acquisition of body form, name and form. Do you really see Me as I Am? I doubt it."

"When the birth is disproved, the great noble meaning of spirituality and the meaning of this world—everything—is disproved.”

If you knew of the bondage, you would refuse the birth. But because the 'I Amness' is absent, you are trapped. Because the 'I Amness' is a quality of the body, later on you come to know you are and that you are trapped. But once You know, you are liberated."

"When you get this knowledge [of the falsity of the birth and all that is inaccurately perceived in the realm of the relative], You will realize that knowledge of this world and consciousness are not even worth your spit. You can spit it out; it will be unworthy."

"The birth, the parents, all this is illusion. Taking the body as oneself is the accident. If you don't cling to the body as your identity, everything is all right."

"Consciousness is time flowing continuously. But I, the Absolute, will not have its company eternally because consciousness is time-bound. When this beingness goes, the Absolute will not know 'I Am'. Appearance and disappearance, birth and death, these are the qualities of beingness; they are not your qualities."

NO "DEATH"
"Death is also a hearsay. Have you experienced death? There is only impersonal consciousness. In this realm of consciousness all that is going on is dynamic playfulness, a process of functioning. There is no differentiation in this process as to a person, an entity, a community, a creed, a religion. In the flash of your consciousness, all this play is going on. The play will come to an end."

"What is birth and death but the beginning and the ending of a stream of events in consciousness?"

[When an ordinary man dies] "according to his belief, it happens. As life before death is but imagination, so is life after. The dream continues. The gnani does not die because he was never born."

"When somebody 'dies', nothing happens. Something becomes nothing. Nothing was, nothing remains."

"You may die a hundred deaths without a break in the mental turmoil. Or you may keep your body and die only in the mind. The death of the mind is the birth of wisdom."

"I am dead already. Physical death will make no difference in My case. I am timeless being. I am free of desire or fear, because I do not remember the past or imagine the future. Where there are no names and shapes, how can there be desires and fear? With desirelessness comes timelessness."

"I am safe, because 'what is not' cannot touch 'What Is'. You feel unsafe because you imagine danger. Of course, your body as such is complex and vulnerable and needs protection. But not You. Once you realize Your own unassailable being, you will be at peace."

"Death is natural ... the manner of dying is man-made. Separateness causes fear and aggression, which again cause violence. Do away with man-made separations and all this horror of people killing each other will surely end. But in reality there is no killing and no dying. The real does not die; the unreal never lived. When you know that the world is one, that humanity is one, you will act accordingly. But first of all you must attend to the way you feel, think and live. Unless there is order in yourself, there can be no order in the world."

"Among the millions of people who have 'come' and 'gone', where am I counted among them? There is no individuality connected with any of those forms, but I have always been, and I am, the total functioning."

"If you have properly understood, what will be your position at the moment of so-called 'death'? It will be watching what is happening. This consciousness gradually loses everything, and ultimately consciousness is no longer conscious of itself."

"I am not concerned with any state which is temporary. This consciousness state is not of my choosing. The sooner it goes, the better. Once it is known what is temporary and what one's original state is, no further knowledge is needed."

Questioner: "Imagine you are ill -- high fever, aches, shivers. The doctor tells you the condition is serious ... there are only a few days to live. What would be your first reaction?"
Maharaj: "No reaction. As it is natural for the incense stick to burn out, so it is natural for the body to die. Really, it is a matter of very little importance. What matters is that I am neither the body nor the mind. I am."

"My present state is such that this consciousness and all this physical suffering are unbearable. I am prepared to dispose of it right now; this is the state of affairs; nevertheless, people come here and these talks emanate out of the consciousness. I am addressing you as consciousness .... I am not concerned with your bodily affairs."

"Without Me the functioning cannot take place. I am the total functioning every moment, millions of years ago or now. In spite of my clearly understanding the foregoing, the bodily suffering has to be undergone because of the consciousness. The name of the consciousness is suffering itself. The life of suffering is nearly over."

A TWO-BOOK SET OF "FINAL TALKS" ARE NOW AVAILABLE, THE FIRST FROM "THE PROTÉGÉ"

WHAT SOME READERS HAVE SAID:

From Robert R.: "The Final Words" has been packing a power and succinctness, pointing to the nisarga "beingness" as opposed to the tendency to make just another cognitive exercise / understanding of Advaita Vedanta and pointing to the importance of not allowing the Advaitin / Nisarga message to become just another philosophy but to be lived, resulting in the deconstruction of any and all identification with body, mind, personality, etc.

I just wanted to thank you. "When Only Three Hours Of Manifestation Remain" is without question the most powerful, concise, catalytic piece of Your work that I have absorbed (and I have absorbed all that has been written). Just as Maharaj's teaching was refined in the latter part of his life, Your teaching has powerfully shifted (and that is no small feat given its already existing purity / essence). Peace, Light and Love, Bob

From Jo H.: My heart grows with your existence. Thank you. Love, Jo

From Ginny: Your writings are a source of comfort. Thank You for continuing to chronicle. You have important work in the relative. Know that what You have exposed has changed my life, allowed Real Life. Words are not coming out right, but please feel the Loving intent.

This is one of Your strongest pieces and allows folk to read, again and again if needed, that energy (which is Us) is Love. Real Love. So, the membrane of separation thins, till there is none.

    The following is excerpted from
"Quotations Regarding ADVAITA, NON-DUALITY, NISARGA YOGA"

PART THREE, "Quotations and Pointers by Category and Subject Matter from Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj"

REGARDING "THE 'I-AMNESS' and MAYA and CONSCIOUSNESS"

"This 'I Amness' is the very source of all misery."

"The problem is universal - suffering and the ending of suffering. The cause of suffering is dependence and independence is the remedy."

"Life and death do not create problems; pains and pleasures come and go, experienced and forgotten. It is memory and anticipation that create problems of attainment or avoidance, coloured by like and dislike. Truth and Love are man's real nature and ... the heart is the means of its expression."

"The I-am-ness is the power of maya."

"This touch of 'I Amness' is in each being; this beingness has that touch of love for the Absolute and it is a representation of the Absolute."

"When you got yourself separated from the Absolute with this identity 'I Am', you felt fragmented, isolated, and that is why your demands started. In the Absolute there are no needs."

"Only the Absolute prevails. [With] the touch of beingness, with 'I Am', separation started; 'otherness' has come. But this "I Amness" is not just a small principle; that itself is the mula-maya, the primary illusion."

"What I am expounding is not meant for the common people, because they have not reached the stature to understand what I am saying. Therefore I tell them to do bhajans, japa, meditation. After doing that, when the purifying takes place, they will be worthy enough to receive my talks."

"That maya is so powerful that it gets you completely wrapped up in it. Maya means 'I Am', 'I love to be'. It has no identity except Love. That knowledge of 'I Am' is the greatest foe and the greatest friend. Although it might be your greatest enemy, if you propitiate it properly, it will turn around and lead you to the highest state."

"All these activities go on, but they are only entertainment. The waking and deep sleep states come and go spontaneously. Through the sense of 'I', you spontaneously feel like working. But find out if this sense of 'I' is real or unreal, permanent or impermanent."

"The 'I' which appears is unreal. How unreal it is I have proven. The moment the 'I' is proven unreal, who is it who knows that the 'I' is unreal? This knowledge within you that knows the 'I' is unreal, that knowledge which knows change, must itself be changeless, permanent."

"You are an illusion, Maya, an imagination. It is only because I know that I'm unreal that I know you also are unreal. It is not like this: 'Because I am real, you are unreal.' It is like this: 'Because I am unreal, everything is unreal'."

"Consciousness depends on the body; the body depends on the essence of food. It is the Consciousness which is speaking now."

"If the food-essence is not present, the body cannot exist. Without the body, would I be able to talk? Can you do anything to retain this sense of 'I'? As it came spontaneously, so will it go. It will not forewarn you by announcing, 'I am going tomorrow.' A doubt has arisen and you are trying to find the solution, but who is it who has this doubt? Find out for yourself."

"In deep sleep, consciousness was in a dormant condition; there were no bodies, no concepts, no encumbrances. Upon the arrival of this apparently wakeful state, with the arrival of the concept 'I Am', the love of 'I Am' woke up. That itself is Maya, illusion."

"One must understand how clever this fraud of Maya is; first it shows us our body and makes us believe that we are the body, but the body is nothing but a speck of fertilized sperm, and in that sperm the consciousness is latent. You see what a fraud it is?"

"Out of that no-being state comes the beingness. It comes as quietly as twilight, with just a feel of the 'I Am', and then suddenly the space is there."

"What is called 'a human body' is also mainly space."

"In the space, movement starts with the air, the fire, the water, and the earth. All these ... elements are you only."

"Out of your consciousness all 'this' [that is, all things in the relative existence] has happened. There is no individual. There is only You, the total functioning of You."

"You must have a thorough knowledge of this consciousness, and having known everything about the consciousness, you come to the conclusion that it is all unreal, and then it should drop off."

"The principle that can pass judgment on whether 'the world' is or is not, that principle antedates 'the world'."

"When pure awareness is attained, no need exists any more, not even for ‘I Am’, which is but a useful pointer, a direction-indicator towards the Absolute."

"The awareness ‘I Am’ then easily ceases. What prevails is that which cannot be described, that which is beyond words. It is this ‘state’ which is most real, a state of pure potentiality, which is prior to everything. The ‘I Am’ and the universe are mere reflections of it."

"What I am expounding does not relate to worldly knowledge. You do not want to give up either worldly knowledge or so-called 'spiritual knowledge', and yet, through these worldly concepts, you want to understand the riddle of your existence, and that is precisely why you are not able to understand."

"Before you were 'born', could you have felt or sensed or known that you exist? A jñani is free because he sees that the body is made up of five elements and it works according to the nature of these elements. I see that body, but I am not concerned with whatever that body does. There is nothing in it with which I identify."

"The sense of the combination of the five elements is the sense of being, of existing. It has all come simultaneously. I have no part in it. Feeling that I am present depends on having a body. I am neither the body nor the conscious presence. In this body is the subtle principle 'I Am'; that principle witnesses all this. You are not the words. Words are the expression of space; they are not yours. Still further, You are not that 'I Am'."

Questioner: "Where does consciousness come from?"
Maharaj: "It never comes or goes; it just appears to have come."

Questioner: "Where is the seat of consciousness?"
Maharaj: "In every particle of the juice of the body."

"Even this primary concept, I-Am-ness, is dishonest, just because it is still only a concept. Finally, one has to transcend that also and be in the nirvikalpa state, which means the concept-free state. Then you have no concept at all, not even of 'I Am.' In that state one does not know that one is."

"Once your body is gone, along with the vital breath, consciousness also will leave. Only that which was prior to the appearance of this body-cum-consciousness, the Absolute, the ever-present, is your true 'identity'. That is what we all really are. That is reality. It is here and now. Where is the question of anyone reaching for it?"

"This sickness gave the confirmation that there is no personality, no individual. Sickness to whom? Sickness is part of the functioning of the entire manifest, dynamic Chaitanya; it is the play of consciousness. My true state is prior to this consciousness. That state does not depend on the consciousness"

"I told the consciousness, 'It is you who is suffering, not I'."

"I have no individuality. I have assumed no pose as a person. Whatever happens in the manifest consciousness happens."

"Now the last traces of personality or individuality have left me. Last year I used to talk to people with a certain affection, but that is not available now. My dwelling place in the grosser world is gone now; presently it is in the subtler sphere, as in space."

"Just understand that it is not your personal action or choice. Do not get involved as the doer. Why do you get involved in all these concepts? First, find out what you consider yourself to be."

"Are you an entity? Get that problem solved instead of getting involved in all kinds of concepts. What are You? You cannot understand with your intellect; it is beyond the grasp of the intellect."

"There was a house, and in the house there was a person; now the person is gone and the house is demolished."

"The sum total is, whatever experiences you have, whether for a day or for years, it is all illusion. The experiences begin with knowingness."

"What is the most ingrained habit you have? It is to say 'I Am'. This is the root habit. Words and experiences are unworthy of You. This habit of experiencing will not go until you realize that all this domain of the five elements, and the experiences in the five elements, are unreal. This 'I-Amness' is itself unreal."

"You are not a personality. That birth principle which gives rise to the consciousness is not conditioned; it has come spontaneously and manifests as consciousness."

"A jnani is like an unborn child: the consciousness is the child when it is born, and the child is sick. This material, objective body is sick. The jnani cannot be sick."

"The core of this consciousness is knowingness, to know "I Am". It is not a personality, not an individual. It is total manifestation. Beingness is there. It fills everything."

"All happenings are only in body consciousness. Personalities only exist in body consciousness. The usual knowledge is concerned only with the body image. You are not the body; You are the consciousness. There is no imprint of personality; it is the manifest consciousness which is functioning. This dynamic, manifest consciousness is always in a fluid state. What will happen no one can say. This dynamic consciousness does not have any concept that something good or bad is going to happen to it; it is just happening. No one is doing it"

"When you look at others, that other 'person' is just food essence, as yourself."

"The body is an aid for the manifestation of consciousness, for experiencing. So long as this consciousness exists, it needs an instrument; without the body, consciousness cannot exist in that form. What is lost is the feeling of being a separate entity."

Please enter the silence of contemplation.

QUOTATIONS AND POINTERS DEALING WITH NON-DUALITY, ADVAITA, AND NISARGA YOGA, Part Twenty

REGARDING "THE BODY" and "THE MIND"

"My true state, which is whole, undifferentiated, is beyond birth and death. I am never bound by my body and mind. I am limitless."

"All your problems are body-mind problems. Even so, you cling to that body."

    MAHARAJ ON "THE BODY"

“From the Absolute no-knowing state, spontaneously, this consciousness ‘I am’ has appeared—there is no reason, no cause.”

"Prior to taking this form, you were formless; spontaneously the form came, and when the form came there was a natural longing to return to the formless state. When you want to return to the formless, desireless state, then only you come here, to seek What You Are. The consciousness has to know the consciousness. When it realizes itself, then only do you return to normal."

"After the information given to you by the mother, that you are a boy or girl, all your further acquisitions are by hearsay."

"Understand that it is not the individual which has consciousness; it is the consciousness which assumes innumerable forms."

“In order to manifest itself, the consciousness needs a frame, a particular construct in which it can appear.”

“Consciousness is present everywhere, but knowledge of that consciousness is dependent on the form.”

“Every organic being, whether an insect or a human, depends on food. All these flowers, this foliage, is our antecedent state.”

[Emphasizing that you are not the body]: “When you travel in a car, are you the car?”

    “…You are the light.”

“From birth, what has made the body grow? It is no power in the world. It is the power of beingness, the atom, the Self, the consciousness ... call it what you will.”

“When the birth is disproved, the great noble meaning of spirituality and the meaning of this world—everything—is disproved.”

“If they come face-to-face with that root, they will be stunned into silence.”

" ... By clinging to the body, you hand yourself over to time and death - you are imposing it on yourself."

"Don’t you see that all your problems are your body’s problems - food, clothing, shelter, family, friends, name, fame, security, survival; all these lose their meaning the moment you realise that you may not be a mere body."

"I cramped myself into a small thing, a body; I made myself a fragment and became needful. I need so many things as a body."

    MAHARAJ ON "THE MIND"

"Out of my existence as the Noumenon has come this state of the phenomenal. The homogenous understands the play of the attributes, the projection of the mind, but the play, the projection of the mind, cannot understand the homogeneous."

“Before this knowledge ‘I Am’ appeared on you, you were absolutely unattached. As soon as the knowledge dawned on you, you became attached to everything around you. Only that false ‘I’ is attached. Everything is just happening, and the false ‘I’ is taking the credit for doing things.”

"The world is nothing but the picture of your own 'I' consciousness."

“That mind-language will talk only about the impressions it has collected. The knowledge ‘I Am’ is not a thought but observes the thoughts.”

“You are already in Your true state. Because of the mind, duality comes in and therefore you are afraid.”

“People who depend on the intellect only always will be swinging like a pendulum.”

[Explaining why persons seem to grasp the understanding and then seemingly “lose” it]: “You are so used to the support of concepts that when your concepts leave you, although it is Your true state, you get frightened and try to cling to them again.”

"The thoughts and deeds depend on the conditioning received right from the time the consciousness is there."

"Humanity's problem lies in this misuse of the mind ...."

"You may die a hundred deaths without a break in the mental turmoil. Or you may keep your body and die only in the mind. The death of the mind is the birth of wisdom."

"In reality nothing happens. Onto the screen of the mind destiny forever projects its pictures - memories of former projections; thus, illusion constantly renews itself. The pictures come and go - light intercepted by ignorance. See the light and disregard the picture."

Questioner: "Imagine you are ill - high fever, aches, shivers. The doctor tells you the condition is serious ... there are only a few days to live. What would be your first reaction?"
Maharaj: "No reaction. As it is natural for the incense stick to burn out, so it is natural for the body to 'die'. Really, it is a matter of very little importance. What matters is that I am neither the body nor the mind. I am."

"I appear to hear and see and talk and act, but to Me it just happens, as to you digestion or perspiration happens. The body-mind machine looks after it, but leaves Me out of it. Just as you do not need to worry about growing hair, so I need not worry about words and actions. They just happen and leave Me unconcerned, for in My 'world,' nothing ever goes wrong."

Questioner: "If my Real Self is peace and love, why is it so restless?"
Maharaj: "It is not your Real Being[ness] that is restless, but its reflection in the mind appears restless because the mind is restless. It is just like the reflection of the moon in the water stirred by the wind. The wind of desire stirs the mind and the 'me', which is but a reflection of the Self in the mind, appears changeful. But these ideas of movement, of restlessness, of pleasure and pain are all in the mind. The Self stands beyond the mind, aware ... but unconcerned."
    Q.: "How to reach it?"
M.: "You are the Self, here and now. Leave the mind alone. Stand aware and unconcerned and you will realise that - to stand alert but detached, watching events come and go - is an aspect of Your Real Nature."

" ... Remain unaffected. This complete aloofness, unconcern with mind and body, is the best proof that - at the core of Your being - You are neither mind nor body."

"What I appear to be to you exists only in your mind. I am not concerned."

"All of what is pursued by the mind, it is not true knowledge."

"What you are doing is using your mind and intellect, but what I say is not based on the intellect, but rather on whatever comes up spontaneously in consciousness. You try to fix that knowledge which springs spontaneously from consciousness into the structure of concepts you have built out of the mind and intellect. This can never happen."

"All your spiritual studies are conducted with your identification with the body-mind."

    "I have no mind."

    "Go to zero concepts."

Please enter the silence of contemplation.

THE SECOND BOOK IN THE TWO-BOOK SET OF "FINAL TALKS" IS FROM "THE MASTER"
