An Advaita Vedanta realization, enlightenment, nisarga yoga site discussing non-duality (nonduality), your original nature, and dwelling in the natural state as taught by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

FROM A SITE VISITOR: Thursday, you used the terms beyond the beingness and beyond the non-beingness. Can you explain. Thank you.

F.: [Continued from yesterday] Recently, sinus problems among several have progressed into sinus and/or bronchial infections. Treating the symptoms had no effect. Antibiotics were required in each case in order to address and eliminate the real problem.

So it is via the Advaita approach. One can try to address the assortment of relative “issues” which persons believe to be “the real problem” (such as those mentioned in the e-mail that was the basis of the series prior to this one). Yet those issues are but symptoms of the problem, not the problem itself.

At the root of the issues that persons (the non-Realized) take to be real are the personas they have adopted as a result of the consciousness having been warped or blocked. In taking those personas to be real, and as a result of entrapment in body-mind-personality identification, desires arise. And when false identities dream up desires, accompanying fears also manifest.

For example, one might have a desire to adopt the persona of “The Spouse” in order to “have” a mate who will fulfill every expectation ever dreamed up about what a “good relationship” looks like…for “as long as they both shall live.” Eventually, it becomes obvious that all of the things desired are not manifesting or not manifesting regularly:

“He has a wonderful work ethic” becomes “He’s a damn workaholic”; “She’s so sweet” becomes “She emasculates me”; “We never fight” becomes “We never communicate”; or “He’s the best lover imaginable” becomes “He’s a maddening, insatiable sex fiend.”

As the beingness is identified with, later the being a spouse, being a lover, being a worker, being a fighter, being an addict, ad infinitum becomes the next illogical “progression.” In the process, co-dependence is fostered since another person is required for any role to believe it exists:

the spouse requires a spouse; the lover requires a lover; the employee requires an employer; the addict requires an enabler, etc. As roles generate desires and fears, disappointments follow. As roles generate co-dependency, independence is seemingly lost. In that absence of any sense of freedom, misery and suffering follow.

Living under the influence of desires, fears, and a sense of having no freedom, shifts between unstable periods of happiness and unhappiness follow. As more and more relative “issues” are taken to be real, misery follows. Yet those are but symptoms of “the illness.”

The illness is the warped or blocked consciousness that takes the beingness (and the subsequent “being this” or “being that”) to be real. And the treatment that has proved effective for some in treating the misery and suffering that result from distortion and belief in fictional concepts? The Advaita teachings.

If all seven steps on the “path” to Realization are completed, then abidance as that which is beyond the relative, beyond the beingness, and beyond the non-beingness happens spontaneously. It becomes understood that to try to address relative “issues” is to tilt with windmills…as futile an effort as attacking a mirage in an effort to eliminate it.

While physical pain is endured by millions of people on a daily basis, most of the truly traumatizing and paralyzing pain and suffering among persons is based in the delusions of the “mind” and in the bogus agendas of false personas that mistake fictional hurts or threats or interferences as being real.

Within this “universe” (which is more of a “void” than "anything") is a pool of air, a pool of elements, and a pool of specialized energy (a.k.a., “consciousness” or “conscious-energy”). Yet the pre-manifestation “state” exists prior to consciousness.

It is prior to the consciousness being, it is prior to the consciousness being aware of being, and it is prior to consciousness being programmed, conditioned, domesticated, and enculturated to the point that it dualistically believes that it can “be this” or “be that” or “be all these different things.”

That prior-to “state” is Your original state. It is the unborn state. Yet even prior to any unmanifested energy being, and even prior to this universe being, there was the no being, void state.

It is one thing to understand that You were not even conceived, much less born. It is another to understand the Latin term, ex nihilo, meaning, “out of nothing.” An entire universe can arise from nothing via natural processes.

If the consciousness is warped or blocked, then “a world” can also seemingly arise in that consciousness and can seemingly fill it will what is taken to be all sorts of “different” things and people. It is not understood that all is one and that the appearance of “different people and things” results only from the differing vibrational rates of energy.

If you want the peace that comes via the understanding of that which is beyond the beingness and the non-beingness, it is available via Realization, via an understanding of THAT, via an understanding of “neither this nor that,” and via an understanding of the nothingness...the Void.

The closest relative comparison is that no-dream state of deep sleep when nothing is believed to be. Such peace can happen now, and only now, but it is only available to those that realize They Are beyond conception, beyond birth, beyond death, beyond being, and beyond non-being.

The unborn cannot possibly “have” anything, including relative “issues.” Consciousness cannot “have” anything. But for the remainder of the manifestation of the consciousness, abidance as (or dwelling “in”) the natural state can happen if Full Realization happens first. Please enter the silence of contemplation.

Thank you.

F.: [Continued from yesterday] Why do so few ever Realize the truth? Because most persons believe they "know." Why would they seek, trapped in the erroneous belief that they have already found (via their ideology or religion or spiritual movement)?

Since most children on the planet are indoctrinated early on into the religion of their fathers and forefathers, seeking is usually preempted. Thus, most will never even hear of “Advaita Vedanta,” and those among the indoctrinated who do will often claim that the Advaita teachings are “an invitation to be out of touch with reality.”

In fact, the teachings are likely the only invitation most will ever hear to be totally in touch with Reality. Among those who do seek, but only seek within their old frameworks, most will be frustrated as they pursue the impossible dream of stability in the relative, the impossible dream of continuity for the body in the relative, and the impossible dream of eternal continuity of the body-mind-personality triad.

Most will be convinced that “their beingness” involves a WHO rather than understanding that no WHO is involved at all, only a WHAT…a THAT. When the few abandon the concept of a WHO and come to know the True Self (and what is beyond the True Self), they understand what Louise from Cape Town was discussing in an e-mail on Wednesday:

There is a growing rest in the inner awareness - even as the gaze is on the phenomena of the external world, the place of connection is this constant, gentle, clear awareness. The paradigm shift out of attachment to the "state" of spiritual bliss and aversion to mundane chaos is experienced with relief, as now anything that shows up "positive" or "negative" is simply what shows up. Recently, there has been a dropping away of desire and fear; the world is shining - like a layer of conceptual muck has been cleared off the lens that sees. "I" looked in the mirror the other day, and actually felt complete surprise that I had once believed the person in the mirror was who I am.

[The only suggestion for further consideration is to focus on the word “connection.” Is it that a connection has manifested? That would be duality, “a” connected to “b.” Isn’t the case actually that Louise is not seen to have connected with the awareness but is, indeed, the awareness? Isn’t the case actually that the sugar is seen not to be sugar at all, and isn’t it the case that the true essence—the sweetness—is now known? Thx for the note.]

As with Louise, the case is also that, before the final THAT or WHAT can be understood, all WHO’s must be rejected as identities. That clears away the “layers of muck” involving “personal identity” and “attributes” as well as beliefs about the beingness and the non-beingness.

The invitation is to visit a mirror and see both the obvious and the not-so-obvious. The obvious is that what is supposedly seen is a reflection, not the real. The not-so-obvious is that what is being reflected is also no more what it appears to be than the reflection in the mirror itself.

Persons, the product of warped programming and distorted conditioning, pass the entire manifestation viewing reflections through the “muck” and thinking that what they perceive involves the beingness and that what they perceive is “being real.”

As a result of that warping and distorting, they will spend the entire manifestation being pushed and pulled about by the illusions of fears and desire. They will never understand that all of their desires are actually rooted in the illusory fears generated by mirages called “ego-states” or “false identities.”

The Advaita understanding has led the few seekers that have truly found to abandon desires regarding the impossible, to abandon their impossible dreams, to find their original nature that is beyond beingness and non-beingness, and to dwell in that natural state now, as forever. Only in that nisarga style of dwelling can the sweetness be tasted (and even then, just for now).

After taking the step that allows for the abandonment of “the final personas” on the “path” (namely, the religious and spiritual personas) can the Child Ignorance stage or the Child Consciousness stage emerge. It is marked by being conscious without “being conscious of this or that.”

Ironically, after that stage, the two witnessing stages can emerge, along with the intuitive awareness of THAT. But how persons seem to love the consciousness—no matter how warped or blocked it becomes—while having not one iota of awareness of the awareness and the truth beyond beingness and non-beingness. Please enter the silence of contemplation. (Tomorrow: The Conclusion)

FROM A SITE VISITOR: Thursday, you used the terms beyond the beingness and beyond the non-beingness. Can you explain. Thank you.

F.: [Continued from Tuesday] Next, why even discuss this beingness and non-beingness? Only in order to consider how the current manifestation might unfold were abidance to happen as THAT which is beyond beingness and non-beingness. A character in a Clive Cussler novel explained what happened during his trips to the ocean:

An inner feeling always overcame Pitt when he was alone and near the sea. It was as though his soul seeped out of his body, and he became a thing without substance, without form. His mind was purified and cleansed; all mental labor ceased and all thoughts vanished. He was only vaguely aware of hot and cold, smells, touch, and all the other senses, except hearing. He listened to the nothingness of silence…. Forgotten for the moment were all his failures, all his victories and all his loves, even life itself was buried and lost in the stillness. He lay dead and floated in the water… Finally, a small swell slapped at his face and he unwittingly inhaled a few drops of salt water.

In an e-mail exchange last Saturday with a frequent visitor to the site, this quote from Walt Whitman was offered:

“Has anyone supposed it lucky to be born? I hasten to inform him or her, it is just as lucky to die, and I know it.”

The concept of “luck” notwithstanding, to “die”—that is, to cast aside ideas and emotions and beliefs about beingness and non-beingness and to allow all belief about the body-mind-personality triad to die away—allows the manifestation to unfold in the manner described by Cussler’s character.

Whitman’s contemporary H.D. Thoreau spoke of the masses “who lead lives of quiet desperation.” Today, the typical relative existence has evolved into very noisy desperation, noise being a necessary tool of the ego that is used among the non-Realized to sustain false images.

As you look to the beingness and the non-beingness and the excerpt from the Cussler novel, why not consider how the relative existence could unfold, if abiding beyond the entrapment of dualistic beliefs:

An inner feeling always overcame Pitt when he was alone and near the sea. [In the vision offered on the meditation CD available at www.floydhenderson.com the seeker enters what the indigenous peoples of the Americas called “The Medicine Place,” a place less concerned with physical healing and more concerned with re-purifying, or unblocking, the consciousness. All seekers have access to that inner resource, to that medicine place. Generally, they find that it is a place where they can be alone, where they hear, but only hear natural sounds, where water is nearby, and where peace prevails as “mind” is allowed to fade away.]

It was as though his soul seeped out of his body, and he became a thing without substance, without form. You have no form, no physical or mental or emotional attributes, but note: that does not prevent Pitt from “feeling.”]

His mind was purified and cleansed; all mental labor ceased and all thoughts vanished. [In fact, the “mind” cannot be purified or cleansed. The latter part of the quote is closer to reality: “all thoughts vanish,” indicating not "a pure mind" but "a mind vanished."]

He was only vaguely aware of hot and cold [that is to say, he was almost entirely free of all duality.]

smells, touch, and all the other senses, except hearing. He listened to the nothingness of silence…. [See the note above on the CD. Sounds are heard, but they are natural. Eventually, even those give way to the total silence, a condition that can only happen in the absence of ego-states and their accompanying egotism. Talk-talk-talk is the tool of the ego.]

Forgotten for the moment were all his failures, all his victories [Again, the rejection of duality]

and all his loves [a rejection of that most-prized and most misunderstood of all concepts]

even life itself was buried and lost in the stillness [that is, freedom from belief in this life, from this beingness, is transcended]

He lay dead and floated in the water… Finally, a small swell slapped at his face and he unwittingly inhaled a few drops of salt water. [Indeed, such is the marker of abidance as that which is beyond the beingness and the non-beingness. All attachment to, and belief in, “this life” has “died,” but then Pitt still continues to function as the temporarily manifested consciousness continues].

If you are a seeker, what part of that manner of functioning spontaneously throughout the remainder of the manifestation would you not seek? Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)
