FROM A SITE VISITOR: [Received several weeks ago]: First off, thanks for your blog. I thought about some things you write about when I went to see the movie Doubt. I thought about how doubt had to come before I was willing to question anything. Before that, I never had any doubt at all that everything I was told by my preist and my parents was completely true. But I still have a few concepts lurking around back there that need to go. And just when I think they’re all gone, one will show up. Any advice? Please keep up your blogging. Chris

F.: Hello, Chris. Whenever a concept “shows up,” understand that You are not involved. Instead, some remnant of personality is working in tandem with the “mind,” and it is the fiction-filled "mind" that is retrieving from its archives some persona-related idea.

You mentioned priest, so religious programming will have been a block on your "path." Suppose you are moving along the Advaitin path toward Realization and suddenly a fear manifests. The “mind” might ask, “What if all of that Advaita stuff is wrong? What if there really is a hell, and what if my lack of faith in the words of my priest ends up dooming me to unending suffering in eternal flames?”

Note the way the “mind” is working there with various personas: all that you were taught about the concept of “hell” is retrieved from the storage section of the “mind.” Multiple personas begin working in tandem with the “mind” to perpetuate the fear.

Ask, "WHO feels threatened?" Is it “Chris the Good Christian”? Is it "Chris the Body" listening to "Chris the Mind" as it adumbrates the words of a priest, once more telling Chris that he is going to experience endless pain and suffering both now and forevermore?

Has “Chris the Good Boy” reared his head, knowing that his “Good Catholic Parents” will withdraw approval if they find out he is doubting (or, worst, rejecting) “the faith of our fathers”?

One man who recently came for an Advaitin retreat said to a fellow Christian some ten years ago, “I’ve reached a point where I am willing to risk my very soul to find the answer.” (In finding the answer via the Advaita teachings, he knows there was never a soul to risk. Ahhhh, peace.)

Sometimes doubt triggers the “journey,” yes, but sometimes it is suffering that triggers the “journey.” Sometimes an overwhelming sense of emptiness or brokenness triggers the “journey.”

In some cases, doubt comes first, then questioning, then the seeing of the false, and then seeing truth. In other cases, questioning comes first, and then doubt happens as a result of questioning. After that, the false is seen and then truth can be revealed.

Of course the order is not significant. What is significant is the willingness to question what you are told and what was accepted on faith alone, accepted without question merely because the one doing the telling was said to have been “an authority” or “an expert.” You might “look back” for a moment and see how those concepts were implanted.

Every belief that was taught and stored in the “mind” during the acculturation process is unquestioningly accepted in the same way that children accept without question the Santa Claus story or the karma-rebirth-nirvana story or the god story or the multiple gods story. Tales are accepted as truth because children have faith in the authority figures who were telling the tales.

But, why does the child want to cling to belief in the tales and not question all that he is told, especially when he begins to hear certain contradictory evidence or especially when that "inner guru" or "inner resource" is trying to inspire the consciousness to question it all? Why, especially, are adults not willing to set aside childish things, including their belief in myths and superstitions and magical tales?

1. Because the child’s natural inclination to question is removed early on by the use of corporal punishment or by threat or by the withholding of favors, all a part of the domestication process.

2. Because the child wants the payoff that is promised if only he/she believes.

3. Because most children feel certain that the authority figures in their lives would never lie to them.

4. Because personality blocks in almost all persons any opportunity for a “rebellious” (questioning) thought to arise. Fifty percent of all persons develop the personality type that drives them to be loyal to any and all authority figures. To be even slightly curious about some things heard in a church or temple or mosque, or to become totally perplexed by some of the unbelievable tales told by a priest or by any other religious “authority,” rarely happens among persons.

Fifty percent of the persons on the planet are driven subconsciously by the loyalist personality type. They are programmed to accept rather than to inquire or challenge.

Another percentage are of the peacemaker type, and they will seldom inquire or challenge; and another prevalent type—the helpers—will seldom inquire or challenge because they are so driven to please that they will seldom risk doing anything that might make others not love them.

Only 2% or so of the persons on the planet have any personality-driven propensity to question or challenge. Most, therefore, will stay asleep and will cling to the beliefs which they accepted on faith and which they have never doubted at all.

5. Because the programming by authority figures sometimes emphasizes a reward, but more often it includes dire warnings about what you can avoid if “faithful”: don’t question parents and you can avoid punishment;

don’t question your teachers and you can avoid a trip to the assistant principal or an “F”; and don’t be damned to hell by modeling yourself after “Doubting Thomas”—one of the greater villains in the text deemed “holy” by billions; also,

don’t question the police and you can avoid a beating; don’t question your commander and you can avoid the brig; don’t question your priest (or preacher or imam or rabbi) and you can avoid burning in eternal flames.

6. Because the ego-states that are generated are accompanied with the egotism that inspires pride in always having the answer (namely, "God" or "the gods"). Those types will enjoy the arrogance that is driven by the self-assuredness that there is a god (or gods) running the universe and that their gods/god is at their beck and call, giving them "power" during times of need…or desire…or fear.

7. Because most like the supposed confidence of being so certain that they know the truth as taught by religious authorities.

8. Because most are prideful that they are seen as “The Expert” about the content of this holy text or that holy text.

For all those reasons and more, to fixate in the no-concept, non-dual Reality rather than to have a few concepts lurking around back there, is a major challenge during the relative existence.

To continue the search, especially in the face of the blockages that are rooted in programming and conditioning, requires (1) a willingness to shift from sightless acquiescence and blind acceptance to a willingness to at least question; or

(2) tremendous suffering to inspire the seeking of something different from what is obviously not working but which most never even see is not working; or

(3) an understanding of what the relative results would be if The Understanding were to come, including independence, freedom, peace, and a relative existence marked by lightness rather than darkness and heaviness. Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)

CONSIDERATIONS FOR MONDAY—JANUARY 5, 2009

You Are That Which Is, Was, and Shall Be, devoid of body or mind or personality when unmanifested and capable, via Full Realization, of being free of body identification and a corrupted “mind” and personas while manifested. You are invited to see how all desire and longing and fear can be transcended when you no longer embrace the limited identity of a physical body or the corrupted “mind” or any fictional personality.

If you would Realize, then you must understand how this body came to be and where You were during the days prior to conception. Even more significantly, find what You Are when nothing is because That Which You Truly Are NOW is what You Will Truly Be “then.”

[In response to one who claimed that he "has had the same body" for "his entire life"] "Trillions of cells have 'come and gone,' so with the exception of a few organs, a chain of bodies that you took to be you has 'come and gone.' It must be asked, 'Among all of those different body forms, which one of those 'me's' would any person claim to be 'the real me'? What 'me' would a 'mind' assume to be 'the one, real me'?" What a distortion to talk of a 'me.'

Understand that persons always take an illusion and either dualistically upgrade the illusion or downgrade the illusion. For example, consider the lie, “This world is real and after death, there is another world that will provide eternal continuity for the body-mind-personality.” Persons upgrade the illusion of “this world” with the promise of another world in heaven for the “good people” and they downgrade the illusion of “this world” with the threat of another world called "hell" that awaits the “bad” people. Similarly, “I am a man” can be an initial illusion. Egotism can generate the belief that “I am a spiritual man,” which is nothing more than an upgrade of the illusion. Guilt can take the initial illusion that "I am a man" and generate the belief that “I am a bad man,” which is nothing more than a downgrading of the illusion.

Frustration results from a sense of limitation. Frustration cannot end, therefore, as long as humans are identified with that which is limited: a physical body, a “mind,” and personality. I Am not personal; I have no individuality, so how could I have individual meaning or an individual purpose? For now, the consciousness is manifested, so whatever happens…happens. Nothing more is involved. Please enter the silence of contemplation.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR TUESDAY—JANUARY 6, 2009

The "mind" is the instrument that supports your personality with thoughts, and those thoughts are the instruments that will forever prevent "peace of mind"; in fact, there is no such thing as "peace of mind." There is only peace if freed of the "mind."

Consciousness is rooted in the Absolute. The brain is rooted in the elements. The ‘mind’ is rooted in wrong programming and faulty conditioning and lies and concepts and ideas and superstitions and falsehoods.

You are in a play, playing a role, and believing that the role and the play are both real. Why would you believe such nonsense? Because "your mind" is the playwright, the author of every scene, but even that “mind” was written by your programmers.

When Maharaj said, "You are not in the world...the world is in you," what did he mean? He meant, "You are not in the world," that is, there is no "you" that is real or in any world. "The world is in you" means that the world is in your "mind" and is nothing more than a figment of your programming-and-conditioning-induced imaginings.

Everything that is said here is to be used to get rid of another false belief until all ideas and emotional intoxication and beliefs are gone and nothing remains but the unstated understanding. Only then can the constant churning and re-churning of the false beliefs of the corrupted "mind" finally cease.

In order to know (the great) Reality, you must be sane. In order to be sane, you must be out of your mind. Please enter the silence of contemplation.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR WEDNESDAY—JANUARY 7, 2009

In this relative existence, nothing is going on but a breeziness of play, but persons are caught up in a tornado of work, in a storm of seriousness, and in a tempest of drama. So-called “life” in this sphere of consciousness is just a process of functioning, and while the “mind” of a person will dream up notions about separation or differentiation, none exists. The process just keeps on happening. A belief or a concept, a religion or a philosophy, a state or a nation, a hero or a villian…all are just part of the process of functioning. All those are just dreamed up names, and all such dreamed up labels (dreamed up by that accumulation of corruptions called "the mind") generate a false sense of reality.

The "journey" aims to put you fully in touch with reality. To be out of touch with reality is to be insane. This "journey" is about getting in touch with reality in order to be free of the bondage of the illusions and falsehoods of a mind exposed to years of enculturation.

Among religions and philosophies, there is no other means that can produce the necessary brain-flush save completion of the entire Advaita “journey” which invites the dissolution of all of the contamination that is “the mind.”

Ultimately, Advaita Vedanta is the Teaching that has the "goal" of becoming the non-teaching by way of un-teaching.

All human suffering is rooted in not living naturally, and all suffering persons (i.e., the non-Realized) are living unnaturally or supernaturally. Those living unnaturally can be recognized by their self-destructive behaviors. Those living supernaturally can be recognized by their magical thinking, by their belief in modernized versions of ancient gods, by their acceptance of ancient myths and superstitions as fact, by their disdain for scientific evidence, and by their belief in non-factual explanations for naturally-occurring events.

Unnatural living and supernatural living are both tiresome and exhausting, but natural living is easy.

This Teaching invites you to question everything. Faith in dogma requires that you question nothing. The "journey" only begins when questioning begins. The "journey" only continues if questioning continues.

Pray all the prayers that you think you need to pray; knell, bend over, stoop, or lie prostrate as much as you think you need to kneel, bend over, stoop, or lie prostrate; read all the “holy” books that you think you need to read; visit all the “sacred” sites or “sacred” men that you think you need to visit; chant or hum every chant or hum you think you need to chant or hum; ring every bell you think you need to ring; and burn every stick of incense that you think you need to burn. But when you are done with all of that, realize that you—and all persons who are fixated in a stage and are playing their religious or spiritual roles—are mistaking the dawn for the noon. Realize that praying and knelling and bending over and stooping and lying prostrate and reading and visiting and chanting and humming and ringing and burning (and every other external thing you try to use to be more spiritual or to try to demonstrate how spiritual you are) will actually block you from finding the truth which can only be found within after certain pointers are taken into quiet and solitary consideration.

One must either find a working philosophy or be doomed to adopt "their" ideology instead, and both the historical and current evidence show that nothing is more destructive, relatively speaking, than buying into "their" ideology. Please enter the silence of contemplation.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR THURSDAY—JANUARY 8, 2009

It eventually had to be asked, “WHO wants to be a ‘Supreme Self’? Who is making the dualistic claims that 'I am free of all concepts' and 'I am freed from assuming identities' but then claiming as well that 'I Am the Supreme'?”

Focusing on the “I Am” is a tool that is only effective after body identification is forfeited. Then, the “I Am” can be used to negate the mind which supports the personality that wants to add words after the “I Am”: “I am spiritual”; “I am a teacher”; “I am good”; “I Am the Supreme.” The only reason for the pointer to “focus only on the ‘I Am’” is to divert the focus from the false identities that have been assumed, from the talk about “I am so-and-so.” Once the last two personas (“The Religious One” and “The Spiritual Giant”) have been cast aside, the use of the “I Am” will also end, right along with the former belief in “The User of Spiritual Tools.”

Supernatural living leads to magical thinking which convinces persons that they can have access to power that will allow them to control. The master addiction among persons is a desire to control, and the secondary addiction is the addiction to power, which they think will allow them to control. The result among persons is belief in the illusion of power/powers and an overwhelming desire to control others, to control their surroundings, or to control other nations. When persons become religious or spiritual, they try to use their power (or superpower) to control their racing, variable, tortuous “minds” or to control the behavior and "minds" of others (all of which is impossible since what they are trying to control is a mirage). The more they believe they have power, the more they believe they can affect when it rains, can influence who heals, can impact the paths of hurricanes, can control who wins wars and who loses, can control who receives blessings and who is cursed, ad infinitum. Supernatural beliefs, therefore, are the compost from which spring the illusions of megalomania, egomania, and self-aggrandizement; therefore, while religion and spirituality are not to be avoided, they are to be transitioned. They are but one step along a "path" to the freedom that happens when the understanding of "natural" displaces unnatural and supernatural thinking.

In order to be reincarnated or to have a resurrection and life eternal, you would have to be a body and a mind and you would have to "have" a personality.

Here, the consciousness speaks to you of the no-self, no-Self, no-SELF Reality. All these Teachings are just words and concepts that can guide "you to You" and then to the no-word silence and the no-concept bliss. If your decades of religious effort and spiritual practices had resulted in the ability to understand the truth that cannot be stated, to be comfortable in the silence, and to be content in the awareness of Wholeness and Completion, then you would not be here. Do not disparage, however, those decades of effort; instead, transition your religious and spiritual roles just as you must transition beyond your belief in all the other roles you've played. Otherwise, you will continue to stand in the subdued light of dawn while insanely believing that you are being bathed in the full light of noon.

In response to, "Floyd, millions of people who believe in Him can't be wrong!": Indeed, your notion is accurate; in truth, it is not millions who have been deluded in their beliefs. It is trillions upon trillions. Please enter the silence of contemplation.

MUMBAI

FROM A SITE VISITOR: So, your teacher lived in what is now called Mumbai. What would he likely say about the recent attacks?

F.: The pointers from that speck of consciousness called “maharaj” were consistent but they did vary according to the audience, meaning, the pointers offered were “level-appropriate.” That is, the responses were always determined by the seeker’s “place on the path” as revealed by her / his questions or comments.

What can be said to anyone on any level is that, once again, the accuracy of the teachings has been shown:

ADOPTION OF PERSONAS

Early reports suggest that the attackers were affiliated with a religious, separatist group (a redundancy, yes?) Anytime anyone adopts a persona and follows the “I am” with anything, (“I am an Easterner,” “I am a Westerner,” “I am a Muslim,” “I am a Christian,” “I am an Indian,” “I am a Pakistani,” “I am an American,” “I am an Iranian”) then the groundwork has been laid for a sense of separation.

A SENSE OF SEPARATION

Once a sense of separation is taken to be real by personas, then the groundwork for extremist behavior has been laid. Why? Because fears and desires are generated by each persona adopted and because the master and secondary addictions of the human species activate when personas are driving persons.

FEARS AND DESIRES

When identified with a “self,” then "self"ishness dominates all thoughts and words and deeds. As thoughts arise which include such dualistic beliefs as “We are right and they are wrong,” then dualistic words will follow:

“If they are allowed to live, they will cause irreparable harm to the world and will behave counter to the will of God / Allah / Jehovah, etc., so they must be destroyed.” Once dualistic thoughts and words occur with frequency, then dualistic deeds (actions by “us” against “them”) will always follow during the relative existence.

At that point, "self"ishness can justify any behavior desired.

THE MASTER AND SECONDARY ADDICTIONS

Because ego-states generate egotism, then the master addiction to control and the secondary addiction—to have the power to control—both activate. Combine the desire of personas to sustain themselves with the desire to have the power (and with egotism’s drive to bend others to one’s will) and escalation is guaranteed. For example:

(1) A movement involving multiple persons might start with a peaceful protest, escalate later to violent protests, eventually erupt into violent attacks against “others,” and thereafter lead to global conflict; or

(2) The same can apply in “personal relationships” with only two persons. Months ago, a woman spoke to her counselor about an argument that ended when the preacher she was dating grabbed her by the arms and began shaking her. She had bruises on each arm. The counselor warned that the event was only the beginning of what was likely to be an escalation of violence as he would continue to try to control her.

The woman was told, “He will never achieve a level of control and power over you that is satisfactory to his ego. Ego-states always continue to feel threatened, and he will strike out more and more until he feels that he had total control and that you have reached a state of total submission. And even then, it will not likely stop, because even submission does not satisfy that which cannot be satisfied.”

Weeks later, she arrived for a session without her glasses and with swelling and discoloration on one side of her face. During an argument a few nights earlier, he had slapped her so hard that the blow to the side of her face broke her glasses and knocked her to the floor.

Last week, she was in court, testifying that the reason she had called the police was because the man had knocked her down, straddled her, and tried to choke her to death. Only an intervention prevented him from succeeding.

It matters not if a “personal” conflict involves one person (with “self” struggling against “self); if it involves two persons; or if it involves members of groups, religions, organizations, communities, states, or nations. Conflict and complications and chaos are guaranteed when personas and their hidden agendas support non-dual, separatist concepts and beliefs about who is "right" and who is "wrong"...about who is "good" and who is "bad." Please enter the silence of contemplation.

THE RETURN TO SIMPLICITY, Part Seven, The Conclusion

F.: [Continued from yesterday] Be free of the mirage and You will be free of your personal wars, your personal chaos, your personal complications. Then, “keeping it simple” is not something that You will “do”; instead, it is something that will simply happen and that You will simply observe as it happens.

If you are not ready for this understanding, then do what you think you must do. You may think until your final day that what you are doing is wonderful. So be it. However, you may find at some point that you’ve done what you’ve done so much that you can’t stand to do it for another second. Meanwhile, talk all the insane talk you want to talk, and listen to all the insane talk you want to listen to.

You may continue to the end to hear and repeat all of that insanity—over and over—or you may reach a point where you will do whatever is required to stop listening to the insanity and to stop participating in the insanity. Crazy is not the treatment for crazy, and the claim by persons that they can free you but that they cannot free themselves is…crazy.

If Realized, all memberships end, so the complications of memberships end, including attendance at regular meetings; including donating money to supposedly “earn points” in some celestial accounting system; including donating time; including donating service;

including the seeking of an audience; including the addition of “good roles” to replace “bad roles”; including religious and spiritual workaholism; and including all of the doingness associated with such “mind-reinforcing, mind cluttering” memberships.

Where I live, there are no meetings to attend, no donations solicited, no pontifications to endure, no special messages to hear, no one claiming to hear a voice from another world, and no one purporting to speak for some extraterrestrial “Being.” Even on this site, there is no one speaking or writing.

Where I live, there are no intrusions, no audiences to impress, no “good roles” or “bad roles,” no doingness, no “minds,” no repetition of ancient, fictional myths as if they were true, and no quest for power or Power.

Where I was prior to this manifestation was a natural state, and I live today in that same all-natural environ. It is marked by its simplicity, not by going and doing and zooming and joining and serving and “being good as opposed to being bad” or “being bad as opposed to being good.”

There is no one saying “there are no tithes or offerings or dues” while passing a basket to collect tithes and offerings and dues. There is no dualistic nonsense of a geographic place for “good” people to go to and there is no geographic place for “bad” people to go to. It is all so simple in a nonsense-free zone. To be "where" I live requires nothing. How could it? It is nothing.

Thus, nothing needs to be added or acquired…nothing needs to be learned or earned. Also for you, all that has been accumulated can be unloaded and then a very simple “journey” to the end of the manifestation unfolds. Nothing needs to be feared. Nothing needs to be sought or desired. Then, it’s all so simple.

Contrast (a) the lifestyle of the deer that are eating grass in the front yard as this post is being written with (b) the lifestyle of troubled CEO’s or with persons who are losing a lifetime’s worth of accumulations in the matter of a few weeks.

Why would the simplicity not be sought over accumulation and complication? Why do adults handle their finances with no more discipline than a six-year old that is driven to spend all he/she has? Only because of programming and acculturation…only due to personal fears and personal desires…only due to a belief that something can be “forever.” Do you see the way that belief in the concept of “forever” distorts perception in the “not-forever” relative existence?

“We’ll retire and have this house forever”; “we’ll always have each other”; “we’ll have our income forever”; “the company will always be here for us”; “at least there’s Social Security”; “I’m sure she’ll / he’ll love me forever”; “I know I’ll live forever and be rewarded some day because I’ve always either done the right thing or asked for forgiveness when I did the wrong thing.”

Nothing is permanent except That Which I Truly Am and That Which You Truly Are.

Here where I abide, it is all so simple because there is neither a geographic heaven nor a geographic hell, and neither is there for you. Those only seem to exist in the geography of your “mind.” I am without a city or a state or a country. I do not even have a world. I have no name, no memberships, no affiliations.

There is nothing to seek and nothing to avoid. All is witnessed as it happens from a position of neutrality. How much simpler can it get than that? And it is the same for You. A few understand that but most do not. It remains, however, a fact.

Again, the invitation is to know the void that is infinite, spaceless, timeless, and mindless. Here, there is nothing that is special or different or complicated. If you are really serious about keeping it simple, then abide as the no-concept, non-dual Reality. Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)
