A POSITION OF NEUTRALITY, 2
A position of neutrality can be compartmentalized. It does not force the realized non-dualist - living in an AS IF fashion - to assume a neutral stance regarding everything in the relative existence.
Even a realized non-dualist can evaluate candidates running for political office and can spot one who is exhibiting a full-blown case of the Ultimate Sickness and can choose to vote for an opponent who is less sick, less driven by ignorance, stupidity, insanity, egotism and narcissism,
and whose every thought and word and action is being determined by the subconscious agendas of a host of assumed, self-absorbed personas suffering from an assortment of personality disorders and sociopathy and psychopathy and neuroses and psychoses.
If that type candidate wins, then the realized will begin witnessing what happens but will not become emotionally-intoxicated over the events which unfold.
In the "Bonfire of the Vanities" days of Monk Girolama Savonarola in Florence, Italy, that monk set out to destroy secular art and culture and bring about "a Christian renewal." Promising to lead "a moralistic campaign" to eliminate the rule of despots, his rule was more despotic that any ever seen there.
Claiming he was going to set the people free from their present government rule and give them "the benefits of a theocracy," his culture wars stripped the masses of the freedoms they had enjoyed before. (Sound familiar to those in the U.S. who are facing the possibility of a new Savonarola-type existence?)
As is the case in many modern-day Islamic theocracies, Savonarola organized an army of boys and young men ' thugs to patrol the streets to curb immodest dress and to identify all homosexuals for special punishment. Only "holy" music could be played. Adultery, drunkenness, and other "moral transgressions" called for severe punishment as well.
How did those dark years finally come to an end? With Savonarola and his lieutenants being convicted of felonies, imprisoned, hanged, and burned.
What followed was a return to the rule of the former progressive leaders, a surge in the arts and literature and sculpture, a new-found respect for such Florentine citizens as Michelangelo, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Donatello, Galileo, Dante, and hundreds of other scientists and people versed in the arts.
A period of enlightenment was returned to and eventually eliminated the darkness brought by Savonarola. Of course, the problem was never really Savonarola. The problem was the percentage of religious fanatics who were a part of the emerging population of people and who were driven by ignorance and their warped beliefs which Savonarola was able to tap into and thereby call to action a group of followers who were like him: desiring control over every aspect of the lives of everyone in their city-state and a desire to destroy all whose beliefs differed from their own. Their dualistic goal was to wipe out "the other."
Historically, certain institutions have demanded that all in their societies think and talk and behave and dress as they do. It takes very little to move from "Welcome to our congregation!" to "You need to go to hell!"
When some refuse to take a position of neutrality and tend only to their own business and leave others alone, chaos and suffering and misery generally follow. So it is when duality-based beliefs become the dominant force which reigns and blocks any attempt to abide in the contentment of a position of neutrality style.
