FROM A SITE VISITOR: I’ll grant that the explanation of consciousness/awareness over the last few days was clearer than any I’ve read, but I’m more inclined to seek the scientific view, always. I read an article on your other website and it said that Maharaj said that science would some day affirm the content of the teachings he offered. How about a bottomline explanation from that viewpoint. Alfred

F.: OK:

In the expanse of space, energy can move via wave and/or particle form. Subatomic particles of specialized energy exist and are moving through that expanse freely. Because the expanse is so vast (limitless in fact), the particles are not forced together into large-quantity clusters or groupings of energy within that space. Consciousness only happens when large-quantity clusters or groupings of energy occur in compact spaces with nervous systems. Otherwise, the background of Awareness IS and energy is moving without confinement in that vast space labeled "the Absolute"; however, by definition at least, "consciousness" capable of being conscious of (as a result of manifestation) is not. Awareness is, even when there is no "one" to be conscious of.
[Another visitor also wrote yesterday to ask, "Isn't consciousness all there is?" Yes, if you want to accept that there are levels of consciousness ranging from "pure and unadulterated" to "totally corrupted" and modalities of consciousness ranging from "manifested" or "not manifested." Then you would consider some levels of consciousness to be "pure and unmanifested" and some levels of consciousness to be "manifest and soon-to-be corrupted." Next, you would likely speak of "the THAT state" as opposed to "the I AM state." If you take that stance, then you have to conclude that "sticky" and "stickiness" are the same. In the no-concept, non-dual Reality, the conclusion above can be valid. The discussion of Awareness/Consciousness is only mentioned in the last book in the Advaita series of books that are offered on this site because an understanding of Awareness/Consciousness is only "relevant" if it guides seekers to the total freedom, during the relative existence, which manifests if abidance happens not as the consciousness but as the unadulterated Awareness or the Absolute.]

Now, back to Alfred's request. As the energy particles move, some enter the atmosphere of earth and strike plants and begin to gather there. In that limited space, the particles of specialized energy (energy able to be conscious of if manifested in something with a nervous system) gather into “tighter” groupings as a result of manifesting in a limited, confined space. Advaitins point to that happening as “the manifestation of consciousness.”

Thus, the term “the manifestation of consciousness” really points to nothing more than a spontaneously-occurring gathering of atomic and subatomic particles of specialized energy into a compact grouping. Consciousness happens only when larger groupings of particles of this specialized energy come together in a “tighter” cluster and in a more confined space than occurs in the vast space of unmanifested energy-awareness. Here's another analogy which can illustrate the "different while not being different" aspect of the Awareness/Consciousness discussion.
Consider an ice cube "versus" water vapor. Really, the ice cube/water vapor is "not two," just as "I AM THAT"/"I AM" is "not two" and as "consciousness/awareness" is "not two." Yet "aspects" exist. When H20 atoms are compacted and close together in a smaller space, water can take on the appearance of "a cube." When quantities of H20 are subjected to intense heat, water can take on the appearance of "vapor." The cube takes on an aspect of being fixed, confined, restricted. The vapors, on the other hand, are free to move about over a far broader area. The "cube" seems confined in a small space; the "vapors" seem free.
Consider the manifested consciousness to be "the cube" (confined and compacted) and the awareness to be "the vapor" (free and not compacted). The discussion of consciousness/awareness then becomes nothing more than a discussion about location and density. The same is true of the discussion of "THAT"/"AM-ness." Located "here" with an aspect of density? Consciousness. Located "there" with no aspect of density? Awareness.
As a side note to this cycling of energy, do you see, therefore, why the concept of “death” is given no credibility by the Realized, much less any “concern”? It is understood by the Realized that what persons call “death” is merely the unmanifesting of consciousness, is merely the releasing of compact groupings of energy that are just “ungrouping” and being “freed up” to move about in a wider, less-limited (actually infinite) space, exactly as prior to manifestation. That "ungrouping" and "releasing" of energy from a confined space (called "death" by persons) is a totally meaningless happening except to the corrupted consciousness that believes in the distorted, dualistic concepts of "good vs. bad" and "right vs." wrong" and some subsequent "punishment vs. reward" of a body-mind-personality triad with eternal continuity. In fact, only the energy is infinite and eternal; the body and "mind" and personality are illusory phenomena that are finite and temporary.

So that which persons refer to as “the moment of death” is really just the unmanifestation process whereby those larger groupings of energy particles in a confined space are freed from that space and enter into an expansive, unlimited energy field or space (called “The Absolute” in order to emphasize the pure and unadulterated state of the energy while in that space). By “relocating” from a confined space called “the human body,” for example, those elementary particles can group together in that vast and expansive ocean of energy; however, they will group into smaller gatherings and into fewer configurations since they are not being compacted into a small space.
During the process whereby consciousness unmanifests, therefore, particles of energy are merely “spreading out” or "being freed from ‘confinement’ in a compact space." After being freed from the confines of a relatively small space with a nervous system—such as a plant or a plant food body (which persons dualistically call "a human" or "an animal" or "a bird")—the energy moves into the limitless expanse of The Absolute and the particles “move apart.” In that freed-up space, the essence of Reality (Awareness) IS.
Now, are you also seeing that though the cycles are natural happenings, the manifesting of consciousness is actually, on one level, a very unnatural event? Why? That which is normally and naturally free to move about in an unrestrained environment and in an unrestricted manner is temporarily not free to function in that manner. Manifested consciousness, as the physicist will understand, is actually "restricted" and "restrained" when compared to the "normal" state of particles of energy which move about in a limitless field or space. Compare (a) the unrestricted movement of light waves moving instantly from the sun to the moon and reflecting off that surface with (b) the restricted movement of conscious-energy striking one synapse after another within the limited space of a human brain.
Here is another side note for the advanced seeker: the essence (awareness) is always in the background, even as consciousness is manifested. That awareness in the background can account for the disconcerting notion generated by the "trapped" and "confined" manifest consciousness that results in persons sensing that "I am not free" and "I need to be free" and "I long for more freedom," all of which mark the relative existence and that happen as long as consciousness is manifested and as long as abidance is happening as that consciousness rather than as the Absolute. Are you understanding why the corrupted consciousness, and even abidance as the Self-Realized consciousness, can never produce a sense of true freedom? The "journey" to true freedom does not end at the point of Self-Realization, and to transmit that fact is the only reason this discussion is warranted.

Awareness is beyond both consciousness being manifested and consciousness not being manifested. Thus Consciousness is what allows consciousness of to happen, but Awareness is why the Consciousness can happen. Consciousness, while manifested via a temporary combination of physical elements, has no independent existence apart from its fundamental background of Awareness. (Does that ultimately mean that "sticky" = "stickiness"? Or, is "stickiness" the essence of something that is "sticky"? "Sticky" can only happen when physical elements temporarily combine. "Stickiness," though, is permanent and forever. Ultimately, it's all definition, all thorns that can be used to remove thorns, and you know that the thorns are all to be tossed eventually. All else should fall into the realm of "entertainment." So only for the sake of entertainment, Alfred, will the response to your request continue.)

When the previously pure energy manifests in humans, it is soon subjected to programming, conditioning, and enculturation. “Minds” form and the endless chatter of “thoughts” soon follows, all because specialized energy gathered into a limited space. The more that electrons accumulate into a natural coherence within a confined space and the more that conscious-energy takes itself to be “a human”, the more frequently will abstract "thoughts" occur and the more frequently they will continue on a large-scale basis once personas are accepted as true identities.
By contrast, when single or elementary particles or coherent groups of energy-capable-of-being-conscious-of come together, smaller-scale abstract "thoughts" in consciousness happen. When the energy is totally “free” and is not gathered into large groups that are confined within relatively small spaces with nervous systems and is not bastardized with programming, then no thoughts occur...but awareness remains. (That is the way that AS IF Living happens: You Are Aware, but there are no "thoughts," no "mind," no separation, no sense of confinement, no fighting with others who are not as "good" as your ego-states and egotism convince you that you are, and no chatter of a thousand monkeys inside your head.)

The manifested particles of energy can be freed of close confinement and compacting via the unmanifesting of consciousness. Prior to that, it is possible that particles of energy can be freed of the distorting effects of programming and conditioning and enculturation via the Full Realization process. Then, the energy can function in the pure and free and uncorrupted manner in which it functioned prior to consciousness, prior to manifestation, and prior to being corrupted.
Awareness Is, without consciousness of subject and objects and without consciousness of any "thing" and without consciousness of some "thing." After "The Nothingness" is understood, You Are the same as the "Awareness Is": just being and just aware. The effects of compacted, manifested consciousness can be transcended and the manifested energy can function as pure, free, unconfined, unlimited awareness instead. So there it is in its scientific cloak, Alfred. Now the invitation is to please enter the silence of contemplation.

FROM A SITE VISITOR: there’s all these contradictions, the part I don’t get is “there’s only consciousness” but at the same time “in the Absolute state there is no one to be consciousness of anything.” Then Maharaj talked about “even in the sleep state the consciousness still is conscious” but at the same time “even in the Absolute state there is consciousness or awareness but no one to be aware of it.” Then, “neither matter nor energy can be created nor destroyed” but “this is finite while that is infinite.” Help! Brad

F.: Also, understand that within that field, various atoms are moving, interacting, and being conscious of each other. Energy is moving in wave and particle form, so unmanifested consciousness is not “at-rest” in the sense that it is not in motion. It is. The term “at rest” (certainly misleading on one level) merely points at the non-manifested status of the consciousness at that point.

Moreover, do not think that there is some definable quantity of conscious-energy that is immobilized while in some larger system or field or pool of energy, “waiting” and positioned in a way that will allow it to be siphoned into some process that leads to manifestation or re-manifestation. Portions may manifest or re-manifest...or not. (Furthermore, as an example of the energy manifesting or not, note the difference in what happens when sunlight hits the surface of the moon vs. what happens when it hits the surface of a plant on earth.) Furthermore, the fact that some particles of previously-manifested consciousness might manifest again, and might not, nullifies such concepts as “karma” and “reincarnation.” I have not been born even once, so how could I possibly be “born again” or be born “multiple times”? Those two concepts are the result of body-mind-personality identification which always produce a desire for continuity.

So, at this very moment, there is a field or system of energy that can be called “the absolute”—pure, absolute, conscious-energy. Within that field, there is movement and interaction, at this very moment; however, when conscious-energy is not manifested in a temporary grouping of elements with a nervous system, the consciousness cannot be conscious of itself. Furthermore, do not take the Absolute to be some special “place.” It is merely a “system” of energy—infinite, limitless, and omnipresent—from which quantities of energy might move to adjacent regions. If that energy becomes “caught up” in a movement of energy that happens to strike a plant, then it can manifest temporarily, yet there is no governing body or entity that determines whether such a chance happening might occur or not.

To understand the cycling of consciousness “out of” or “into” a field or system, see what happens the moment that a bug is struck by the windshield of an automobile: much of the elemental structure remains on the glass (ash-to-ash, dust-to-dust); the air that was circulating as breath is instantaneously released and united with the universal pool of air; and the conscious-energy is instantaneously released into an omnipresent field…into that infinite pool of energy that can neither be created nor destroyed. The energy does not “go there” to some special place.

Next, understand that too much has been made of what is called “The Absolute.” It is nothing more than an all-pervasive body or system or field or pool of energy, energy that is not currently manifested via a group of elements with a nervous system. Yet IT IS. In the process of trying to assign “supernatural” or “extraordinary” or “heavenly” or “special” attributes to a field of energy, (a) most persons now take the Absolute to be a mystical, supernatural location and (b) persons who believe that it is “up there” or “out there” do not understood that it is all-pervasive.

As a result of religious and spiritual leaders having glorified an energy field, the Absolute is imagined by many to be a place—even a geographic place in some teachings—that is not “here” but which is “there” instead. All such distortions attempt to place limitations on the limitless; yet even John Paul II, as programmed as he was, was aware enough to say that “we must correct the geography of Gehanna: there is no literal heaven or hell…they are mental states, and you are in one or the other right now.” ("Gehanna" also known as "Gehenna," "gehenom" or "gehinom.")

[NOTE: An editorial in La Civilta Cattolica, a Jesuit magazine with close ties to the Vatican, also said at that time, “Hell is not a 'place' but a 'state,' a person's 'state of being’.” The pope and the magazine merely adumbrated what Christ had said: “No one will ever see the kingdom of heaven…it is within.” Yet those who are programmed with religious dogma and who are enamored with their belief in the dualities of “good vs. bad” and “punishment vs. reward” as well as their desire for eternal continuity of body and mind and personality will called themselves “Christians” while completely ignoring the later Advaita teachings of Christ, that there is no heaven, in order to cling to the desires of body and mind: "Yes we are Christians, but we do not consider all of the teachings of Christ. We'd rather cling to the dualistic notions of hell and heaven and hope we can avoid hell and earn the right to live forever in heaven."]

With the widespread distorted thinking among persons, however, the Absolute has been misconceived as “heaven,” as “the home of the gods or a god,” as “a place where persons will go for eternal bliss if they are good,” ad infinitum. The smashed bug is neither “at rest” nor enjoying “its place of final rest.” Neither are any humans who have ever walked the planet.

Here is all that happens when a human “dies” or when a bug is struck by the windshield of a car: a temporary “association of” or “involvement among” certain elements and energy and air comes to an end. Though that particular association ends, the elements do not end, the air does not end, and the energy does not end. What did come to “an end” with the smashed bug (or a "dead human") was an ever-changing combination of elements, air, and energy which were in a constant state of flux but perceived by persons to have had continuity. The fact is that no “same bug” will ever be again, and no “same human” shall ever be again, but the same elements and air and energy shall be forever.

But keep it simple now as you revisit one set of the teachings that were a quandary for you: “It’s all consciousness…there’s only consciousness” but at the same time “in the Absolute state there is no one to be conscious of anything.” Now you should be able to see from the example of the atoms that they are conscious of the presence of each other; that they move in relationship to each other; and that their movements influence the behavior of each other. However, even as atoms were conscious of the presence of other atoms, there was no “one”—no being with a nervous system—that could allow the consciousness to be conscious of the fact that it is; nevertheless, the consciousness still IS, though it is not conscious of the fact that it IS. The same is the case with "brad" prior to manifestation, and the same shall be the case with "brad" post-manifestation.

It has been shown how consciousness IS even though there is no witness of that consciousness when unmanifest. Therefore, the consciousness was and is definitely “there,” the atoms were and are conscious of the presence of each other, and they all acted and reacted, and now act, in a certain way as a result. Even in a pre-manifestation state, consciousness was functioning, even without any consciousness of consciousness. (So much for the concept of "sacred contracts.") The same happens each night as you sleep.

Even as you are not conscious while in deep sleep, consciousness continues to function and guides the brain and heart and other organs through their functions, automatically and spontaneously. You need not try to stay awake and be aware of your heart and lungs in order for them to work. Consciousness does that. Yet awake or asleep, you need not be conscious of the consciousness that is guiding the lungs to inhale and exhale and that is guiding the heart to contract and pump. That parallels abidance as the Absolute: as this manifested conscious-energy called “floyd” functions as consciousness that is conscious of, there is no “one”—no person—who is there and witnessing it. It’s all just happening, spontaneously, by itself. Please enter the silence of contemplation.

[A SIDE NOTE FROM A SITE VISITOR: I’ve been reading off and on for over a year what you write but never wrote to you before. I thought at first that the Imus comments that are currently in the news were being blown out of proportion, then I read what you wrote yesterday. I suddenly realized the message you keep trying to convey about the suffering that comes from supporting separation/duality. I now see that, like you say, one day it’s about who is right and who is wrong; the next day it’s about who is in this political party and who is in that political party; another day it’s about the people in this country versus the people in that country; and today it’s about black and white and male and female and judging versus acceptance and “I’m a good person” versus “You’re whores.” But it's not really even about that, is it? It’s about what you called the “learned ignorance” that supports duality. That term you used “being the unicity” struck some kind of cord that had not been struck before. It seems that I crossed some kind of plane or level and have entered some new phase or dimension, and I don’t want to go back. So thank you.]

F.: Thx for sharing that. Realization is meaningless post-manifestation. If it doesn’t bear upon the relative existence (in the type shift you describe, for example) why exert any energy or effort to realize? The “I AM”—though temporary—is a part of the functioning of consciousness that is recognized in the summative phrase “I AM THAT; I AM,” isn’t it? Again, thx for writing. Now, to continue with today’s subject:

FROM A SITE VISITOR: there’s all these contradictions, the part I don’t get is “there’s only consciousness” but at the same time “in the Absolute state there is no one to be consciousness of anything.” Then Maharaj talked about “even in the sleep state the consciousness still is conscious” but at the same time “even in the Absolute state there is consciousness or awareness but no one to be aware of it.” Then, “neither matter nor energy can be created nor destroyed” but “this is finite while that is infinite.” Help! Brad

F.: Hello Brad. There are no contradictions in the teachings but there are paradoxes and there are seeming contradictions because Realization happens by passing through specific stages. No teacher will tell a seeker at stage two what will be told to a seeker at stage six. That said, much confusion does exist regarding “awareness as opposed to consciousness,” regarding the nature of conscious-energy, regarding what “the Absolute” is, and regarding what “The Absolute” is not, so some clarifications will be offered to try to eliminate the confusion.

First, everything in this universe (and in all universes) is energy/matter. Consider energy and matter to be one reality, to be one in essence, with two aspects. Look at a steel beam under an electron microscope and you’ll see that the beam, considered by many to be only “matter,” is a swirling mass of energy. At the core of atoms are subatomic particles, and one of those (the electron) is really a small particle of light.

Second, recall from any basic science course that neither energy nor matter can be created nor destroyed. There was no creation. There is nothing being created now. There will never be anything created. Furthermore, there is no destruction and there will be no destruction. Energy/matter merely cycle.

Third, to the confusion you reference in regards to “in the Absolute state there is consciousness or awareness.” Understand that the Absolute is the awareness that consciousness is in, meaning that awareness exists and “makes it possible” for consciousness to happen whenever there is an object…that is, when there is something to be “conscious of.” One attribute of conscious-energy is just that: an ability to be conscious of something.
By definition, then, consciousness at its most basic level must deal with duality since an object has to be present in order for consciousness to be conscious of. During the manifestation, it is at the second witnessing stage of Pure Witnessing that such can be transitioned as the Oneness, as the non-dual reality, is understood. So there are three pointers about consciousness, subjects-objects, and the eternal Subject that might be of interest:
[1] Manifested, (corrupted) consciousness can become aware of itself and that which it takes to be objects. [2] Unmanifested, consciousness can be conscious of objects but not conscious of itself. For example, the electron can be conscious of the nucleus around which it is swirling even as the electron is not conscious of itself; or, the consciousness that was manifested and called "brad" will remain as energy which can be conscious of surrounding energy or particles but cannot be conscious of itself after no longer being manifested. [3] Manifested and Realized, the consciousness can be conscious of the Oneness (of the unicity...of the eternal Subject) while no longer taking the illusion of objects to be real.
Next, take awareness to be the original “state,” prior to the manifestation of consciousness and its post-programming S-O witnessing. See that awareness is primary and that consciousness is secondary. See that awareness is antecedent and that consciousness is subsequent to awareness. To abide as the Absolute is to abide as awareness, freed throughout the remainder of the manifestation from the machinations of the consciousness which was bastardized by programming and conditioning and enculturation. (Thus, on December 7, 2006 it was posted on this site: “Ultimately, even identification with the Pure Consciousness fades as the Realized transcend and abide as the Absolute.”)

Abiding as the Absolute—as the awareness—You are aware of the functioning of the totality. You are not conscious of objects any longer, having understood that no "object" which can supposedly be perceived is as it appears to be. It becomes clear that nothing which can supposedly be seen by the eye is actually THAT; therefore, all subject-object witnessing is transitioned and Pure Witnessing happens via the Pure Self (the Pure Witness, the True Self) for the remainder of the manifestation. More exactly, that is the only witness that remains…that Self-awareness (which you can also take to be “unicity-awareness”).

At that point, the Realized have been “re-membered,” so to speak. You could, at that point, know THAT which You were prior to consciousness and prior to the corruption of the manifested consciousness. There never was anything other than the unicity, and upon Realization the unicity is understood and all assumptions of duality cease. Please enter the silence of contemplation. [To be continued]

F.: The pointers offered in response to an e-mail posted yesterday now continue:

8. Regarding your “spiritual work” that you think can eventually unite you and god, such a joining of “A” to “B” would require duality to be real. The unicity is real, the duality is false, so no “joining of separates” or “uniting of separates” is possible. That Which All Is Is THAT one thing only, vibrating at various frequencies when manifested and thus resulting in “varying appearances” that are wrongly perceived as “different things.”

9. As far as a new personality developing, all personality is an illusion, so how could a “new” personality develop? And how could a former personality--a formerly assumed persona that was an illusion--recycle? Such scenarios can only be dreamed up via the manifestation and corruption of previously pure consciousness.

So the occasion that you would call “death” cannot happen since no birth happened. That “no-birth and no death principle” quite naturally prevents any reincarnation from happening. All that is going to happen is that the elements forming the space that you take yourself to be will rejoin the universal pool of elements, the spirit/breath shall rejoin the universal pool of air, and the energy-consciousness shall merge with the universal pool of energy. Portions of those elements may recycle with other elements into another form, or they may not. Quantities of that breath/air may recycle again through a plant or an animal or something else with a nervous system, or it may not. Quantities of that energy may recycle again into a plant or animal or something else with a nervous system, or it may not.

You, however, will likely remained trapped in your current false personality of “The Religious One” or “The Knowing One” since those ego-states are both entered into with the accompanying programming to “never question” and to “believe what you’re told.” Such is the bondage of the corrupted consciousness and such is the bondage of personality. Thus, believing what they have been told by “others” (from without), most persons will never realize what they have always known all along (within) but that has been blocked from awareness.

For those who are willing to question and to move along the seven-step path toward Realization, the consciousness can knows itself…can know the I-Amness. If it understands the Is-ness, then subsequently the re-purified consciousness is able to understand all else. The understanding of the functioning of the totality happens. Because you have accepted a false identity as real, you cannot know anything other than that which is false. Thus, all other beliefs held by that which is false must likewise be false. In that closed loop, your corrupted consciousness will likely remained corrupted and will therefore be closed off from knowing the unutterable truth that can nevertheless be known. So it is as persons walk about in the dream of the planet, playing their roles in The Drama of the Lie, and being directed throughout their play by the corrupted consciousness. Please enter the silence of contemplation.
