FROM A SITE VISITOR: Why do so few ever realize?
F.: Maharaj estimated early on that only 1 in 100,000 will ever Realize. Later, he revised the estimate to 1 in 1,000,000. After decades of dealing with both seekers and non-seekers, he modified that to 1 in 10,000,000. No one knows, but his last estimate seems closer to fact than the earlier guesses.
The fact is that while humans for millions of years intuitively sensed their Original Nature via the inner guru, most now have been separated from any awareness at all of either what they are not or What They Truly Are; nowadays, therefore, most persons will never Realize.
It has been stated repeatedly on this site that the readiness is all. Yet that "readiness" is usually prevented from manifesting because of the proliferation of obstacles that result from acculturation and programming and conditioning. Consider the obstacles that exist:
RELIGION/DOGMA
While the adoption of religious and/or spiritual personas can move persons to the third of the seven steps to Realization, that role-assumption becomes an obstacle because it inspires most to never move beyond that level. Why seek if the belief is that "all has been found"?
Religion, as well as what typically amounts to nothing more than kindergarten-level spirituality, both block persons from Realizing Fully more than all of the other obstructions to Realization combined. How?
Of approximately 7 billion people on the planet, over 6.5 billion claim a religious affiliation. That means that nearly 93% of all persons on the planet will likely never seek Realization, believing that they have found truth and know all the answers via their dogma; thus, they are willing to "turn it over" on blind faith and seek no further answers because they have been programmed and conditioned to question nothing.
So that eliminates almost 93% of all persons from ever reaching a state of "readiness" to hear and understand the truth. Add to that the members of so-called "spiritual groups" or "spiritual movements" who also think they know all of the answers and it is likely that fewer than 5% remain that might be even remotely positioned to experience that "readiness" and to seek answers outside their fundamental programming and conditioning.
Indeed, most trapped in religious and spiritual roles will not even question, must less find the truth that lies beyond the playing of their "good" roles, beyond the beingness, and beyond the non-beingness.
PERSONALITY
Fifty percent of all persons on the planet are Personality Type Sixes. Sixes are the human-sheep of the planet, devoted followers of their leaders. They are fear-based, they are avoiders of change, they are blindly loyal, they are protective of the content of their indoctrination, and they are nationalistic practitioners of the "love it or leave it" mentality.
They unquestioningly take the word of preachers and police and politicians and priests and anyone else in a "position of authority" as gospel...as truth.
They are attached to their family's beliefs and traditions and their religion's dogma. Being fear-based, they take to heart their national leaders' pronouncements about ever-pending threats and about promises of protection, functioning more like frightened children seeking protection than as mature adults. They march to the beat of one drum, the drum of authority.
By contrast, there is a personality type (Type Four) that is "wired for rebellion," that questions nonsense, that sees through the B.S. that is put out by "the authorities." Of the nine most basic personality types, this is the only one that is driven to abandon the phoniness of their societies and to seek the Authentic Self.
Having a built-in B.S. detector that is always turned on to the highest setting, and being at their core far more logical and reasonable than the masses, they automatically question the insane comments put forth by "authorities" and demand proof and facts before accepting any statement as truth.
These are not the type that can be convinced to "just believe what you're told on faith alone." Instead, these are the rebels, these are the questioners, and these are the ones who are predisposed to be disgusted with phoniness and ignorance. These are the ones predisposed to seek the True Self, knowing intuitively that something is bogus about the ancient, fictional tales being passed down by programmers and conditioners as "indisputable truths."
If they follow "the path" to its end, they will be free of all personality, but in the beginning, they are far more likely than all others to be able to hear the words of an Advaitin teacher and to comprehend.
So, where's the rub? The rub is that, while 3.5 billion of the persons on the planet are Type Sixes who are "wired to be blind followers," only 1/2 of 1% of the entire planet's population are Type Fours that are predisposed to sensing lies and seeking Truth.
Are you seeing why, based in only these first two of many obstacles that will be discussed, that most persons will never have even the slightest chance of ever Realizing?
