An Advaita forum focusing on Realisation, enlightenment, non-duality, Real Love, peace, freedom, Your original nature, abiding naturally, the Oneness, the Nothingness, and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

Here, there is nothing that is believed, so there is no one here who wants you to believe anything, either. Here, the invitation is to be free of all that you have been programmed, conditioned, acculturated, and domesticated to believe so that you can be free, period.

F.: Yesterday's thread continues:

Questioner: You know what is startling is how unnoticeable the debris is until it is seen. Temporary delusion indeed! In any event, this clearing up has been very effective. Now - it is absurd to imagine that any practices "help". Who would do them? A belief in practices requires a belief in a separate individual or doer. When identified with this false sense of self, there is instant bondage.

The image that comes at the moment is of a duckling separated from its parents, sees a human, and falsely imagines the human to be its mother. How to shift this misidentified view when it is formed so young? In the case of persons, this root misidentification is so hypnotically strong. Very grateful to you for spotting the dirt and cleaning the lens.

F.: Certainly.

Questioner: Here's some of my own list: empowered, attuned, meditated, visualized, dzogchened, fasted, brown riced, juice feasted, guru yoga’d, tai chi’d …

I guess what I am picking up is the classic movement of mind – to reject all practices as nonsense except the ones “I” did. So there is a tendency to separate practices into good/bad; more refined or “higher” / more body-mind-bound or “lower”. WHO evaluates practices? WHO believes practices can be “good” or “refined” or are needed at all? WHO practices?

The View of course is that there is no “end point” reached by means of months, years or a lifetime of practices. There is no “practicer”. The mind makes the link between Ultimate Reality and practice – but there is no causal link.

I notice how engrained this thought track is in this mind – the “meditation”, “abiding in pure awareness” practice leading to Realization is just a more refined version of regular attendance at Sunday School resulting in a post-death place on the heavenly cloud. No difference really – yet why is this medicine so hard to take?

F.: The various states-of-being all have their own hidden agendas, and the ego-defense mechanisms that are used by the self-centered “mind” to sustain them seem on occasion as if they do not even have to be learned, they are so readily available:

"Did you eat that chocolate right before dinner when I've told you to never do that?" asked the mom of the child with lips and chin and cheeks coated in chocolate. "No!" is the immediate answer in defense. With humans, driven by the consciousness that would sustain itself forever, lies are almost automatic...almost “second nature,” if you will.

Find a person desiring eternal continuity of the consciousness (and of the body and mind and personality) and you'll find one set up to believe any lie presented by any person in authority who is prescribing the means by which "eternal life and reward" can be attained.

Truth is natural...nature is truth. It is that “second nature” stuff that sustains the non-truth and is just more of all the garbage that must go. All forms and spaces on the planet except persons live in nature. Humans alone reside on the stage of the “The Theatre of the Lie” and are driven by that false motivator which is labeled "second nature."

Now, another consideration. Earlier, this invitation was shared, offered to a death-fearing man attending a retreat here:

“Die the death of illusion. Let the desire for the impossible end now so You will be free and joyous, now. The "I" / energy is all that will last, but post-manifestation, it will not know that it has lasted, so what's the big deal? There is none, and if there is no big deal for the post-manifestation eternity, what could be a big deal during the limited and short-lived relative? Nothing.”

Therein lies the opportunity to be totally independent and totally free and totally at peace during the remainder of the manifestation. Not only is doingness for naught, everything in this relative existence is for naught except the happiness and bliss and pleasure that can be known only now and enjoyed only now. All else is much ado about nothing.

The following e-mail was received in August of 2007 (see the archives for the full discussion). The response follows:

FROM A SITE VISITOR: My friend Ricardo told me to write to you. I just want peace. I just want to be happy. Help. William (Guillermo)

F.: Hello Guillermo. Since you are obviously just beginning the search for peace and happiness, understand that some come to Advaita with high expectations. They are searching for immediate joy and bliss when that bar might be set too high for beginners.

Realize that, ultimately, peace and happiness during the relative existence cannot happen unless it is first understood that all happenings are “Much ado about nothing.” Meaning? Meaning that if you observe all events with a clear perspective, you'll see how the trivial is elevated to the status of "significant" by persons.

Then, seeing how trivial it all really is, you might be able to assume a position of neutrality around all happenings. Then, you might at least attain a sense of contentment before pursuing joy and bliss.

If it is understood that the entire manifestation of consciousness is much ado about nothing, then those obstacles which interrupt peace cannot materialize, obstacles such as belief in dualistic concepts, attachment, judging, involvement, emotional intoxication, desiring, fearing, needing, etc.

Consider: often people engage in fiery arguments but cannot recall a week later what their fight was even about. How many relative “relationships” have ended when ego-states and egotism elevated the trivial to high status when it all really amounted to nothing? Take that distortion from the personal level and expand it to state and national and international issues and the root of global chaos becomes clear.

What does much ado about nothing look like? It looks as if important happenings are occurring, happenings that require a dualistic stance, either for or against. But those happenings are really just the various parts of a fable; however, the elements of a fictional story can only be reviewed objectively if one functions as a non-attached witness.

Then, by reviewing the elements of the fiction from a “distance,” one can see clearly how it all amounted to nothing. Here are the elements in one tale with a 60-year span. It will show how much ado can be made about nothing when persons think the events in their relative existence amount to something important.

Note the dualism in the account of the events witnessed by the members of one family and shared below. See how the belief that "this is a great friend" shifts to "this is a great enemy" later. The participants (called “floyd” and “his parents” and his "sister" and "wives" and "a daughter"), along with many other persons, certainly thought the elements in the tale were highly significant at the time. Only the perspective of “distance” allows those elements to be seen in perspective. Notice the constant fluctuations that mark the relative as you read the series of happenings that were witnessed:

A young girl abandoned after her mother died in childbirth; that girl later kidnapped by a relative; a young man watching his brother being cut in half by a train; a chance meeting; “love”; a marriage; Germany and Japan are declared “the enemy”; war declared; separation as a result of a war; two bombs dropped; returning home; prosperity; pregnancy; birth; another pregnancy; another birth; parents were pleased; parents were angry; teachers were pleased; teachers were angry; children were whipped with paddles; palms were beaten with rulers; national crime rates went down; and ultimately, it was all much ado about nothing.

Germany and Japan are then declared “our friends” and communists are declared “the enemy”; bomb shelters were built; drills in schools, crawling under desks and putting books over heads; making friends at school; fighting with friends at school; Cuba was declared “an enemy”; and ultimately, it was all much ado about nothing.

a lack of prosperity; crime went up; a tonsillectomy; an appendectomy; a toe severed by a lawn mover; a rare snow; intense heat; punishment for not being “good”; exposure to religious Occidentals and their nonsensical beliefs; fear when the promise of eternal fire and damnation were introduced; accepting “salvation” to please, but knowing it was hogwash; dating; championships won; graduation; college;

another graduation; employment; bosses were pleased; bosses were displeased; Vietnam was declared “an enemy”; another war; being drafted; another war ended; graduate school; a Master’s Degree and another graduation; low-paying employment; a meeting; “love”; a marriage; Vietnam was then declared “a friend” and “trading partner”; a divorce; and ultimately, it was all much ado about nothing.

too many lovers; a chance meeting; “love”; a marriage; high-paying employment; a Bush declares an Ortega “a friend”; plaques and certificates of achievement and paid vacations awarded at annual banquets; pregnancy; birth; a healthy child; a sick child; swings in the economy; low income; high income; a Rumsfeld meets a Saddam and declares him “our friend”; an apartment in Tuscany;

months at a time in Europe; dream jobs that became nightmares; fortunes lost; fortunes earned again; huge homes purchased and filled with “stuff”; friendships with neighbors; fights with neighbors; pets bought; pets buried; repairmen scheduled; pipes OK; pipes burst; more contractors dealt with; and ultimately, it was all much ado about nothing;

vast accumulations; wealth; hurricanes came, trees fell, property “destroyed”; property rebuilt; property taxes increased; evaluations protested; fortunes lost; dream relationships became nightmares; hearing the word “cancer”; a spouse who got into her car and drove away the day before the scheduled surgery for cancer, never to return; a divorce; and ultimately, it was all much ado about nothing;

arranging a funeral for a parent who preferred burial; Republican rule; nations in Central America were declared “the enemy”; glasnost; Communists are then declared “a friend” and “a trading partner”; a parent’s stroke; more invasions and war; a declaration that “We must fight them in Central America or we’ll fight them here”; secret U.S. death squads; meeting a U.S. sniper using drugs to try to suppress the guilt of assassinating 46 innocent civilians in Central America (including a teacher and a priest) who were declared “the enemy” by the U.S. for anti-U.S. speeches;

illegal arms deals; Democratic rule; huge surplus in national treasury; Republican rule; a Bush declares an Ortega is now “an enemy”; two poorly-designed towers fall; a Rumsfeld and others who had declared a Saddam to be "a friend" said he is “an enemy”; another war; national treasury surplus gone, replaced by huge national debt; a declaration that “We must fight them in the Middle East or we’ll fight them here”; nations to the south again declared “the enemy”; now, the health care providers no longer say “cancer,” but last week one said for the first time, “diabetes”; but ultimately, it’s all much ado about nothing.

Since then, jobs have come and gone; investment funds and retirement accounts were wiped out by greedy capitalists; costs of goods and services are going up while income is going down. Senseless wars continue.

To review those happenings from the perspective of the objective witness, Guillermo, is to see the insanity of all of the duality that robbed the players in that "Drama of the Lie" of peace and happiness:

good and bad, satisfied and dissatisfied, pleased and displeased, reward and punishment, war and peace, enemy and friend, friend and enemy, rich and poor, sick and well, marriage and divorce, good times and bad times, chaos and stability, supposedly knowing who "the enemy" was then not knowing who "the enemy" was.

Everything thought to be bad would eventually be thought to be good, and everything thought to be good would eventually be thought to be bad. In fact, it was all dualistic fiction, all dualistic nonsense, all ego-based silliness, all ego-driven BS. Do you see why all of that was eventually seen to have been for naught?

Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)

Non-Duality Paperback Books on Amazon.com

Five Free eBooks

Compliments of Andy Gugar, Jr.,
the following eBooks are available without charge for you or for friends:

I.
"GOOD vs. EVIL?" or "IGNORANCE, STUPIDITY, and INSANITY?"

The content of this eBook deals with one of the most common but erroneous beliefs that the non-Realized masses cling to and which they will fight about (and even kill over), namely, that there is a planet-wide duel going on between “the forces of good and evil” in the universe.

Either (1) the ancient view is spot on: that the "ills of the planet" are rooted in evil people, in people not being religious enough or spiritual enough, and are caused solely by bad morality; or, (2) the "ills of the planet" are rooted in ignorance, stupidity and insanity and "being good" or "being moral" does not put an end to ignorance, does not eliminate stupidity, and does not treat insanity in any way.

II.
"THE VISION"

Comments regarding the free eBook entitled “THE VISION”:

“My thanks to you and Andy.” – Andrew “Mac” McMaster

“Thanks so much for the book! And, by the way, it is brilliant and the most effective pointing that you have done. It has served to help clear the remaining blockages.” – Stan Cross

“Greatly appreciate having “THE VISION” added to my Henderson resource library that is situated on the right side of my bed for easy access! Eternally grateful for what was received and what was given.” – Robert Rigby

“‘THE VISION’ is such a well-written, condensed version of the Nisarga Yoga approach to understanding and enjoying Reality that I feel it can serve as a must-read ‘meditation guide’ for all earnest seekers.” – Andy Gugar, Jr.

III.
"Sapolsky, Maharaj, and the Non-Dual Teachings"

Dr. Robert Maurice Sapolsky is an American neuroendocrinologist; a professor of biology, neuroscience, and neurosurgery at Stanford University; a researcher; an author; and a Research Associate at the National Museums of Kenya.

There is much that a non-dualist or Advaitin or Nisargan can relate to by comparing and contrasting what Sapolsky reveals about the way certain troops of baboons live in Africa with the way that humans abide all around the globe.

This 152-page eBook catalogues the common, non-dual message shared by Sapolsky and Maharaj and reveals the ways that Sapolsky’s scientific research supports the non-dual pointers offered by Maharaj.

IV.
Seeking

In “PART ONE” it will be seen that most persons on the planet are not seeking, and most will never seek, but for those who are seeking, most will face several obstacles:

In “PART TWO” of this book, it will be seen why many criticized Maharaj for “changing his message in his later talks.” It will be seen that the changes were not about changing the message per se as much as about changing his methodology as he experimented with one version of the Ultimate Medicine after another in order to try to find an effective means for addressing the Ultimate Sickness.

He tried a religious version of the Medicine, a Spiritual version of the Medicine, and finally settled on a version which addressed to Sickness at its core . . . at the mental and emotional level.

V.
"THE MOST DANGEROUS BELIEF OF ALL"

“Dangerous” is a term that can only apply during the relative existence, but of those who do commit suicide, for example, how many shoot themselves in the foot over and over until they “bleed out”? None. They shoot themselves in the head. Why? In order to try to stop the noise - to try to stop the chatter of a thousand monkeys – to stop the noisy mind which is the area that stores the ideas, notions, concepts, mind-stuff, etc. which drives them into the depths of insanity.

And what are those ideas, notions, concepts, etc. called, collectively? "Their beliefs." The irony? They are not their beliefs at all. They are the beliefs of “others” that were set in place via programming, conditioning, etc. and which persons then think are their own.

And what are those beliefs rooted in, and what reinforces those beliefs and convinces persons that they are sacred and worth fighting over and even sometimes worth dying for? Blind faith.

This 337-page eBook discusses those issues in detail.
