FROM A SITE VISITOR: If the glass I drink from is not real, then how is it that I’m able to drink water from the glass? Michael

F.: To review, it has been seen that to call a space or a form “an ice cube” is to block the understanding of the fact that it is really H20. The cube can melt and is no more, as far as the form is concerned; however, the H20 remains. The same applies to the form called “a glass.” The same applies to the AM-ness and to You.

The “real-ness” of a glass or an ice cube is not the issue addressed by the teaching. It is the mis-perceiving by persons and the perceptions they have about the roles which they are playing that account for the misery and suffering on the planet.

Similarly, a man in a robe can pronounce, “You are now a husband” or "You are now a wife." As with the mislabeled “ice cube,” the status of “wife or husband” can melt away when a different man in a robe rules that a man once labeled “husband” is no longer “husband” and a woman once labeled “wife” is no longer wife.

The label goes, the space remains temporarily, and only that which is Real and shall be forever is THAT which is temporarily manifested as a space called “a woman” or “a man.” To live out a relative existence without knowing what a glass or a cube is, at its core, will not generate the misery that happens when You do not not know Who/What You Are.

To live out a relative existence without knowing What You Are, and what you are not, will guarantee fluctuations between happiness and unhappiness “at best” or extended periods of misery and suffering “at worst.”

So rather than debate the Real vs. the perceived, the more relevant pointer is in regards to the mis-perceiving itself. What You Are cannot be changed by age (“I was a ‘girl’ but now I am a ‘woman’”); cannot change by income (“I once was a ‘failure’ but now I’m a great ‘success’");

and it cannot be changed by men in robes saying it’s so (“You once were ‘lost’ but now you’re ‘saved’” or “You once were ‘single’ but now you’re a spouse and ‘part of a couple’” or “You once were a ‘spouse and ‘part of a couple,’ but now you are not a spouse and not a ‘part of a couple’.”)

I tell you that What You Are does not change and cannot change; therefore, knowing what does change and What does not change—and abiding as THAT which does not—will free You. From what?

From the slings and arrows of the outrageous fortunes and agonizing misfortunes of the relative existence with all of its “you are this” labeling, all of its “you are that” labeling, and all of the effort required to try to sustain assigned labels and roles.

Abiding as Your natural state also frees you from the paralyzing fears and the frustrated desires that accompany all ego-state assumption. Does that mean that—for the remainder of your relative existence—you must become an ascetic, an isolationist or hermit, a deprived spiritualist, a forest-dweller, and an avoider of physical pleasures? Of course not.

Does it mean that you must never pursue employment or use funds to purchase food, clothing, and housing? Does it mean you must practice celibacy and fasting? Does it means that religious or spiritual practices must become a part of your daily existence? Does it mean that family and relative “relationships” must be abandoned? Of course not.

Yet it does not mean you must constantly seek company and search for the presence of “others.” It does not mean that you will be obsessed with the seeking of physical pleasures. Nor does it mean that you must accumulate “food fit for a king,” designer clothing, or multiple homes.

It does not mean you will abandon fasting only to gorge instead. It does not mean that you must seek out partners or mates to feel whole or to allay fears or to attain desired possessions, nor does it mean that family and relative “relationships” must be abandoned.

Knowing the THAT does not result in an immediate abandonment of the I AM. It does allow for the understanding of, for the differentiation of, the Real vs. the perceived.

That understanding then allows for the enjoyment of the relative “possibilities” of the AM-ness as well as an ability to witness accurately the relative “predicaments” of the IS-ness.

Employment can happen. Housing can happen. “Husbanding” or “wifing” can happen. But all of that happens without the acceptance of limiting roles as identities, without allowing “bonds” to become bondage, and without allowing the culture’s externals—such as role assignment and role removal—to control the internal…the way you feel and perceive.

Anything subjected to arbitrary and fluctuating claims about what is and what is not cannot be Real; further, mis-perceiving cannot be compartmentalized, so when the consciousness is blocked and cannot see the Real in one regard, it will be blocked from seeing the Real in any regard.

Blindness is blindness, and a person who cannot see that she/he is not any of the identities that others might arbitrarily assign is destined to be jerked around throughout the relative existence by being labeled and then expected or required or coerced to meet the expectations of each label.

As long as assigned or assumed roles are mis-perceived as the Real, then what will follow is a willingness, or even a drive, to think the way your culture believes that each role should think, to talk the way your culture believes that each role should talk, and to behave in the way that your culture believes that each role should behave.

Further, the culture will attempt to enforce punitive actions and punishments for those not playing the roles the way that the culture expects those roles to be played. As long as you are on the stage, you will be subjected to the whims of all those you allow to direct you.

Only by leaving the stage in “The Theater of the Lie” and abiding as Your original, natural state can you be free of the burdens that accompany assigned labels and roles and free of expectations, coercion, and angst as well. Please enter the silence of contemplation.

FROM A SITE VISITOR: If the glass I drink from is not real, then how is it that I’m able to drink water from the glass? Michael

F.: So, Michael, as the discussion continues, is the focus shifting from trying to determine if a glass is real to determining if the drama in which you’re playing multiple roles is real? To determining if the perceptions you have of the characters on the stage is real? To determining if your image of “the world” is real? To determining if you are seeing the Real or only a series of mis-perceptions?

Yesterday, the following was offered to site visitors regarding persons trapped in the relative drama:

You perceived some actors to be charming who proved to be narcissists instead; you perceived some actors as being kind who were later revealed to be complete sociopaths, and you perceived some actors as being moral who would eventually be exposed as unscrupulous frauds instead.

There is another group of persons who do not even have the ability to see through narcissists, sociopaths, or frauds in the relative existence. Rather than being trapped on the stage in “The Drama of the Lie,” they are walking about in their sleep in “The Dream of the Planet.”

In the process of sleepwalking through life, they are engaging narcissists and sociopaths and frauds—and they are behaving as narcissists or sociopaths or frauds—but don’t even know it.

All who are playing their roles on the relative stage, or who are walking about in a dream while thinking they are awake, will continue to be trapped in all of the nonsensical drama and in all of the peace-preventing histrionics that the relative existence generates when the moment of “peripetia” has not happened and all of the false selves are perceived to be real and all of their false concepts are perceived to be true.

The peripetia is discussed in the non-duality-based-novel THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF WARS. Here is an excerpt from the novel in which the peripetia is explained:

“You seem at peace in the middle of this chaos. I want that peace,” Brett almost demanded.

“Brett, you’ve been shown the answer all your life. It was there for you to see in every play, in every movie, in every mystery you’ve ever read. Shakespeare borrowed the dramatic technique from the Greeks,” Kirk began. “Today, it’s the basis of all mystery and suspense stories, and it’s also the basis of realization.”

    “I’m lost,” Brett confessed.

“Well look at every drama you’ve ever seen. The main character, who represents you and me and everyone, runs around like a chicken with its head cut off. He is confused and in the dark. Those who are in a position to sit back and witness the drama objectively can see that he’s just an actor on the stage and that none of the drama is real. But for entertainment’s sake, he and the witnesses can pretend it’s real. Both, in fact, can get so absorbed in the role that they take it to be the real for a time.

“But even amidst all of the drama, a time comes, that moment in the play when even the actor finds out the truth. It is called the peripetia in drama—that moment in the play or the movie when the lead actor finds out that everything he thought to be true is really false; when he sees that he was being misled at every turn; when those he thought he could trust the most, and who thought they were telling him the truth, were also wrong.

“It’s the moment of freedom that comes when one finds out that everything he ever thought or believed or held sacred (or thought worth fighting for) was a lie. The freedom comes when he gives up all of the concepts he bought into, drops his head in relief and amazement, shakes his head back and forth, wonders for a moment at how he had bought into all their crap, smiles at how easily he was duped, watches how all of the rest of the play unfolds automatically until its end, and leaves the stage after saying to himself, ‘Well, sonofabitch. I’ll be damned.’ And then he laughs. He laughs at it all. And then he’s done with it, once and for all.”

Are you done with it, once and for all, or will you settle for the instability and flux? Are you done with it all, or will you continue to settle for a relative existence with all its conditions, including conditional “love” and conditional peace and conditional happiness?

Are you willing to settle for more of the limitations and qualifications that the relative offers when mis-perceptions block seeing the Real? Are you willing to settle for the relative’s uncertain and unsure and compartmentalized existence? Are you willing to settle for continued interaction with adulterated and ambiguous characters on a stage?

Have dissociation and dreaming and sleepwalking become your best friends? Are you “bored to death” (that is, bored with all that walking about in your sleep, just experiencing a “death-in-life” existence of “settling for”)? The relative, mis-perceived via the ever-moving consciousness, will always be dominated by such instability and delusion.

Only abidance as the unchanging, unconditional, unadulterated and unambiguous Absolute offers stability. Are you settling, having been programmed to believe that suffering is OK for now since a reward awaits you later?

Or, is your “mind” claiming that all is fine? If so, why are you visiting this site? For mere entertainment, or in a search for something? Is there a search for an end to misery and suffering and delusion? The teachings point the way.

Is there a search for answers to certain questions that humans have asked throughout the ages, such as "Who am I, really?" and "What's it all about?" and "What happens when I die?" The teachings point to the answers.

Is the search for happiness and freedom and understanding and clarity and peace…NOW? If you have been programmed to believe that paradise is “there” and “later,” then you will never know happiness “here” and NOW.

To see through all of the nonsense and drama and histrionics and fiction that the programmed “mind” will generate, the moment of “peripetia” is a requirement, not an option. Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)

FROM A SITE VISITOR: If the glass I drink from is not real, then how is it that I’m able to drink water from the glass? Michael

F.: On this site, there is no minimization of the relative misery and suffering that anyone has experienced as a result of participating in the relative “Drama of the Lie.” You never asked to be cast into the roles you played. You had no choice.

Early on, and continuing for years, “they” programmed and conditioned and acculturated and domesticated you. They trained you early on to misperceive, to be as ineffective at perceiving realistically as they are.

After all of that programming, you began playing your assumed or assigned roles in the dualistic play in “The Theater of the Lie”—in this relative existence. There, you acted out your parts without knowing all of the motives and actions of the other actors and without even knowing your own agenda that was hidden from you.

With no ability to know Reality, you misperceived the actions on the stage and you misperceived the other actors and their motivating forces as well. That is why you perceived some actors to be charming who proved to be narcissists instead.

That is also why you perceived some actors as being kind who were later revealed to be complete sociopaths. That is why you perceived some actors as being moral who would eventually be exposed as unscrupulous frauds instead.

Such are typical happenings when a person is walking about on the relative stage of “The Theater of the Lie.” Acting in the play, a person will have no clue that truth can be found only beyond the distorting smoke and the illusory mirrors that prevent any ability to witness clearly what is actually happening in the play. It was all actually a nightmarish setup from day one. Why?

Because they programmed you to dream rather than to know the Real. They conditioned you to accept a nightmare as “normal.” They taught you to misperceive. They set you up to play-act on the stage and to become engrossed in the fantasy of the play. They convinced you that magical, supernatural thinking is normal, that the unnatural is natural, and that the natural is supernatural.

Thus, during that post-programming play, you cast yourself opposite certain players that no one ever deserved to be in contact with. In “The Theater of the Lie,” the duality always includes the users and the used…the abusers and the abused…the wounders and the wounded.

The Advaitin teacher comes along to tell you that none of it was Real, meaning that none of it was as you perceived it, and that the mis-perceiving itself trapped you on the stage with those other deceptive actors. And the mis-perceiving can continue to drive you to allow the actors on the stage to deceive you as they offer you the greatest pleasures that will eventually become the greatest miseries. How does the teacher know?

The Advaitin teacher cannot point the way beyond being used and abused and wounded if she/he has not been in play, has not played the roles, and has not experienced in spades the hurt and suffering and misery that the relative can hand out to so many people who got what they never asked for and who got what they never deserved in the relative activities of the relative existence.

Nor can guidance beyond the relative suffering be offered if the teacher has not transcended that as well. Some come to this site who are seeking that transcendence. Some are ready to end the mis-perceiving and to know the Real…to be the Real. You know this second if I, the Consciousness, am speaking to You.

He/She who has not been lost in that darkest place, and who has not found the way out, cannot possibly guide anyone beyond the suffocating gloom and into the soothing light. To offer that guidance is the sole purpose of this site.

There is no ignoring of the fact that, relatively speaking, many of you have undergone relative experiences that no one should have ever undergone. These postings are not about denying, minimizing, ignoring, or diminishing the relative impact of relative suffering.

They are about seeing the truth, about allowing all ego-states and egotism to dissolve, and about finally being free.

Recently, a visitor asked what M. was asked: “Do you ever think about us? Do you ever really care about us?” And the answer was the same: “More than you will ever know.” That is the down-side of knowing the Oneness…of understanding Love:

I know the misery of all; I know that you have experienced the relative misery as well. But you can transcend the suffering, and as a result I am willing to face it daily with all who are still afflicted in spite of the awareness that few (even after all their seeking) will likely reach that moment of peripetia.

There are relative wounds that might never heal, so the invitation is to allow yourself to be guided to Your Self, to move beyond those relative wounds, to transcend the relative and its miseries and to abide in the peace of Your natural state. Tomorrow, a discussion of the peripetia, and how yours can happen, will be discussed. Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)

F.: On this site, there is no minimization of the relative pain and suffering that you experienced as a result of participating in the relative “Drama of the Lie.” You never asked to be cast into the roles you played. You had no choice.

You did exactly what “they” programmed and conditioned and acculturated and domesticated you to do during the relative play: you perceived a person to be charming who proved to be a narcissist instead; or you perceived as kind a person later revealed to be a complete sociopath instead; or you perceived as moral a person eventually exposed to be an unscrupulous fraud instead.

The entire posting will be available in three days; meanwhile, visitors are invited to read the information below on the various Advaita readings that are available or to visit the archives. Or, links are available to the right for those interested in a retreat or for those interested in an online course in the Advaita Teachings. Note: the housing now allows for two persons or three seekers at a time to stay here and eliminate hotel expenses and share other expenses.

A limited number of retreat dates are available for the rest of the year. Twelve out-of-town retreats have been scheduled, two per month during July-December. That leaves open twelve retreat dates during the week for the remainder of 2008 and about twelve weekend dates. The content of the retreats as described on the link on this site are the same; some changes will apply since moving to the other side of the lake.

You can use the “Contact” link to begin making arrangements for a private, in-home retreat. A queen size bed and a twin bed are available, so up to three seekers can attend together and save on expenses. Peace and Light.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE BOOKS IN THE ADVAITA COLLECTION:

The books are presented in the recommended ordering for reading. They may be ordered individually, or in one of three sets, or in their entirety.

    THE MEDITATION GUIDES

These books can be read in either order since each stands alone. The entries each day provide an excerpt from a non-duality book, followed by one or more considerations for that day. Some read the books from beginning to finish while others use them on a daily basis. Either way, they offer hundreds of pointers that are intended to allow those in the early stages of seeking to begin consideration of pointers that deal with something other than the body and mind issues that dominate most persons. Reading all of the entries in either or both guides will allow the consciousness to begin processing subject matter that is beyond the phenomenal. That will prepare the consciousness to receive the Advaita pointers at the end of the volumes and that continue in a progressive order throughout the remaining books on the list. To order, visit http://floydhenderson.com/order.htm

IT’S ALL BULLSHIT (And Why Knowing It Sets You Free)

This book contains a series of “propositionalities” that would be worthless except to the extent that they prepare all seekers to become willing to question the sacred cows of your culture. Ultimately, this all deals more with the relative than the Absolute, but one cannot abide sanely as the Absolute without first seeing the insanity of the relative. If one can question his/her core beliefs that are generally held sacred by the masses, then discarding all of the other nonsense of the culture might become easier. That alone can begin the "journey" toward total freedom and total peace. Few will ever be able to discard the minor cows, much less these six sacred cows, but this book is an invitation to begin questioning what is usually taken for granted after years of programming and enculturation. To order, visit http://floydhenderson.com/order.htm

SPIRITUAL SOBRIETY (Recovering What Religions Lost)

This book is for the 6 billion+ persons who have been programmed with the dogma of the planets’ religions, especially the three outgrowths of Abraham: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It is also for those who are playing a spiritual role or who have become spiritually intoxicated (which prevents moving beyond all role-playing and Realizing Fully). It's intent is to allow persons on the "path" to transition beyond the religious and spiritual identities that are assumed at the third step of the "journey." The focus is on those three since their dogma has programmed—and corrupted the consciousness of—most persons on the planet, but the overall message reflects the truth about all religions and all “spiritual” programs or movements as well. The content reveals the 16 tenets common to those religions which evolved from the killing of virgins; exposes the contradictions of those teachings; discusses the glorification of suffering; catalogues and exposes the false promises that are made in order to attract and control the masses; explains the way that their leaders' addiction to power drives them to manipulate their followers; exposes the lies upon which those institutions are based; identifies the results of religious and spiritual intoxication; and uncovers the mental disorders that result from strict adherence to the dogma and ideology. If you have been exposed to any religious or spiritual indoctrination, or if you live in a culture where the leaders have been indoctrinated by religion, this one should be read. To order, visit http://floydhenderson.com/order.htm

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS “PEACE OF MIND” (There Is Only Peace if You’re Out of Your Mind)

This book leads to the next level of freedom, allowing seekers to transition beyond the mind. The content explores the history of the human brain, including the fact that for millions of years, human and human-like beings functioned without any mind. The book uncovers the ways that the brain evolved over the ages and developed an ability to store and retrieve memories. It then shows how the original memories were used constructively but how programming and conditioning changed all that and created a "mind" that most often overrules the brain and generates relative-existence harm and destruction. Similarly, the book shows the way that personality develops during childhood as a means for survival and adaptation but later becomes a liability when those childhood personality traits continue to drive adult thinking and behavior.

Ultimately, the content of the book shows why Advaitin sages for centuries have correctly identified the "problems of the planet" as being rooted in body-mind-personality identification and offers suggestions for being free of all of that nonsense via Realization. To order, visit http://floydhenderson.com/order.htm

    LIBERATION
This book helps remove the next barrier to Realization: personality. After being freed from body-mind identification, transitioning into the next step begins the process of being freed from identification with personas and being unconsciously controlled by personality traits. This book studies the nine most basic persona types as identified in the enneagram method and offers the way to be freed of the influences of personality. To order, visit http://floydhenderson.com/order.htm

    WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I DIE?

This book offers the opportunity to shift to the next level of understanding, the level at which you come to realize that you cannot die since you were not born. Fears generally begin to fall away after reading this work. The Foreword offers this: “If you find the answer to ‘What happens when I die—what happens after the body ends?’ the result will be that the remainder of your relative existence will be marked by an incredible lightness of being. Persons addicted to chaos will hate that possibility. Those seeking to be restored to sanity will seek the answer until it is found.” Eventually, it will be understood that You cannot die since You were never born. To order, visit http://floydhenderson.com/order.htm

    THE ESSENCE OF THE TEACHINGS

This book is used by many as a primer and companion piece to FROM THE I TO THE ABSOLUTE. “PART ONE” includes answers to frequently-asked questions and provides an overview of terms used during the teachings. “PART TWO” provides information for those who are “close” but haven’t yet “gotten it.” "PART TWO" moves the seeker to a depth of understanding that sets the stage for the final message in FROM THE I TO THE ABSOLUTE. To order, visit http://floydhenderson.com/order.htm

FROM THE I TO THE ABSOLUTE (A Seven-Step Journey to Reality)

Most of the so-called “Spiritual Masters” addressed all of the steps that must be taken, in a very exact order, to shift from identifying with the false “I” to abiding as the Absolute. All of the steps (or “stages” to use Maharaj’s term) have been discussed for centuries, but this is the first time that the steps have been offered and explained in simple language in the exact order in which the seven steps must be taken in order to move from “the lie of the I” to Full Realization. Most of the content of this book contains the complete set of transcripts from audio tapings of a series of satsang sessions that guided the participants from step one to Realization. Some have said that by reading the questions from seekers and the immediate responses by floyd (all offered in their original easy, conversational format), they have felt as if they were present in the room, actively engaged in the satsang along with fellow seekers. To order, visit http://floydhenderson.com/order.htm

Recommended: Use in conjunction with FROM THE I TO THE ABSOLUTE the CD entitled SPIRIT JOURNEY TO YOUR TRUE SELF in order to have an experiential awareness of the seven steps as you read about each. To order, visit http://floydhenderson.com/order.htm

CONSCIOUSNESS/AWARENESS: The Nature of Reality Beyond Self-Realization (Peace Every Day When Abiding as The Absolute)

After following the “path” as outlined in FROM THE I TO THE ABSOLUTE (A Seven-Step Journey to Reality) in order to Realize, the next step is to understand the difference in consciousness and awareness in order to abide as the Absolute for the remainder of the manifestation and then be totally free. "The Final Frontier" of the Advaita Teachings is transitioned when the Nature of Reality is understood and when the Advaita Teachings are "applied" on a daily basis even in the absence of any “Applier.” The Nature of Reality cannot be understood until the differences in Consciousness and Awareness are understood. Understanding the Nature of Consciousness allows for abidance in the I AM, but what of THAT Which Is beyond, and that which is beyond the beyond? To be at perfect peace on a daily basis, abidance as the re-purified Consciousness must be transitioned and abidance as the Absolute Awareness must happen. Only abidance as the Absolute allows for the remainder of the manifestation of Consciousness to happen in Perfect Peace. This book will distinguish between Consciousness and Awareness, will define the exact Nature of Reality, will offer explanations that will allow fixation in the Full Realization to happen, will allow for an understanding of the Functioning of the Totality, and will assist all earnest seekers to find the way to fixate in a state of peace from NOW until the Consciousness Unmanifests. To order, visit http://floydhenderson.com/order.htm

FROM THE ABSOLUTE TO THE NOTHINGNESS

This book, the third in the “Advanced Seeker’s Package,” is only for Realized Advaitin seekers. The recommendation is that both FROM THE I TO THE ABSOLUTE and CONSCIOUSNESS/AWARENESS be read (in that order) and that the pointers in both of those books be understood before reading FROM THE ABSOLUTE TO THE NOTHINGNESS. An understanding of the pointers offered in this book can allow the advanced seeker to shift even beyond SELF-Realization, even beyond an understanding of Consciousness and Awareness, and to an understanding of that which preceded the Absolute. The content of this book can, in fact, allow the advanced seeker to truly comprehend the Reality of “no concept,” of “no duality,” of “no something,” and even of “no nothing.” The Advaita Teachings offer an invitation to be free of all concepts, all beliefs, and all ideas in order to be totally free. Yet how many reach that "state," and how many who reach that "state" are able to fixate in that understanding and truly be free and thereby at peace? This book will offer details of the way that can happen. To order, visit http://floydhenderson.com/order.htm

    AN OVERVIEW:

The order in which the books are to be read and how to get them at a package rate:

Consider the Meditation CD, the Meditation Guides, Bullshit, and Spiritual Sobriety to be a “Beginner’s Package,” providing a foundation from which persons can begin to consider realities that are beyond the beliefs which they accept unquestioningly as a result of their enculturation. Used as a group, the works encourage inquiry (which is at the core of the Advaita approach) where questioning has not occurred before. [Visit http://floydhenderson.com/order.htm.]

Consider Peace of Mind, Liberation, What Happens When I Die? and The Essence of the Teachings to be a “Mid-Level Seekers” Package, each guiding seekers beyond the false identification with body and mind and personality and explaining the basic terminology that must be understood before moving to the advanced teachings. [Visit http://floydhenderson.com/order.htm.]

Consider From the I to the Absolute, Consciousness/Awareness, and From the Absolute to the Nothingness to be an “Advanced Seekers” Package. From the I to the Absolute can serve as a guide for earnest and capable seekers, putting the teachings into an orderly context that reveals the exact steps that must be taken in an exact order to move through all of the degrees of separation from belief in the false “I” to Realization. Consciousness/Awareness offers the next level of understanding, explaining that which is beyond the beingness and how happiness can manifest each day via the understanding. Finally, From the Absolute to the Nothingness will allow earnest and capable seekers to understand the state that is even prior to beingness and non-beingness, even prior to the Absolute. The seeker who understands the content of this book will realize how it is that—from a state of non-existence or nothingness—everything in this universe (and all universes) came to be. FROM A SITE VISITOR: If the glass I drink from is not real, then how is it that I’m able to drink water from the glass? Michael

F.: So, Michael, what you call “glass” is usually sand mixed with other elements and then fired at extreme temperatures, yet the mis-perceiving of sand as glass takes no relative toll.

Similarly, your culture has agreed to mislabel H2O as “rain” sometimes and “steam” sometimes, but false labeling will not make H2O into anything other than H2O. The appearance of the form might vary because of variations in vibrational frequencies, but that does not cause the Real to vary.

Likewise, labeling cannot make specks of consciousness into something other than specks of consciousness, but you and your culture believe something quite different. You think a speck can be re-labeled and then become “A Good Person” or “A Bad Person” or “A Spouse” or “A Not-Spouse Anymore.”

Billions can agree on their labels, and they do, but that does not make their labels or beliefs or concepts real…does not make them true. Not only can billions and trillions be in error, but billions and trillions have been in error throughout history; furthermore, billions are in error right now as far as their perceptions are concerned.

The invitation is to ignore the glass and find where the actual relative toll of mis-perceiving is being exacted. You saw yesterday that it is mis-perceiving “the play” for “the Real” that is the core issue being addressed by Advaitin pointers. The relative toll is not paid around misunderstandings about glass or ice cubes; the relative toll is paid when persons misperceive the fiction of “The Drama of the Lie” for truth…for Reality.

The point is, therefore, to avoid a waste of time debating whether or not glass or god or a tree or a rock are “as perceived,” though they are not; more to the point, the Advaitin invites you to differentiate the non-dual, no-concept Reality from “the play” which is erroneously taken by all persons to be the Real.

With Advaitins, the focus begins not with glass or god or trees or rocks but with the play. Why? Because all mis-perceptions must be seen to be mis-perceptions and then discarded before the Real can be seen, and most mis-perceptions happen in regards to the play. Ignore the glass and focus on the play since the play is the sustainer of duality…of the not-Real.

In “The Theater of the Lie” that the relative existence is, all of the actors are trapped in duality. That is at the core of acting. All of the actors play multiple roles, and all of them can play at various times the roles of both the protagonist and the antagonist.

In one movie, George Burns played the roles of both “God” and “Satan”; in other movies, Eddie Murphy played the role of “good-hearted” Sherman Klump as well as the obnoxious Buddy Love; Mike Myers played the out-of-the-ordinary “hero” Austin Powers as well as the eccentric “Dr. Evil”; and Keanu Reeves played both “Ted Logan” and “Evil Ed.”

And that is what happens in every play in the dualistic, relative existence: every actor plays dual roles. In a show of their instability, the actors will play “good” roles at times and “bad” roles at times.

And those who continue to go into the theater—looking for a comedy to give them some happiness—will also find tragedy at times if they become so embroiled in the play that they are driven to abandon their position of witnessing only, if they feel compelled to run on stage, if they become an actor, and if they assume a variety of roles in “The Theater of the Lie.”

Two weeks ago, in answer to a site visitor who wrote, “The only reason I can think of for not wanting to Realize is that I like ‘the high part’ of the highs-and-lows of non-Realized living,” the following consideration was offered:

Your problem is that, in duality, you cannot have the “highs” only, and they will become fewer and farther between since that which makes you high will eventually make you low, and that which makes you feel the highest will eventually be what makes you feel the lowest. Whatever gives you pleasure will eventually give you pain or misery; whatever gives you the most pleasure will eventually give you the most pain or the most misery.

Yet persons will continue to stay in the play with all of those dualistic characters and will settle for a state of flux with all its low’s in order to get that occasional high. Interestingly, the persons of the planet are quite critical of addicts who follow that course, even as the population of the planet engages in that same behavior on a daily basis...suffering all of the low's because of their willingness to settle for an occasional high.

For those whose relative existence has stretched across enough years to know both the high’s and the low’s, do you not see now that all of the misery and suffering you’ve ever experienced came when you stepped onto the stage in that “Theater of the Lie” and interacted with those actors who were playing dual roles?

What woman whose relative existence has covered several decades has not gone onto the stage and played opposite “Mr. Right”? Did he not play his role so well that you—along with everyone else in the audience—became convinced that he was kind and loving and wonderful?

However, after a time on stage in the drama called “your life”—after you spent more time interacting with him on your stage—did there not come a point when his mask fell off and revealed that his character was really that of “The Villain” in disguise—the meanest, cruelest, most vicious person you’ve ever met?

Did you enjoy your time on stage with "Prince Charming"? Was that a “high”? Was it worth “the low” that came later when he tossed you off his white horse and revealed that he was also the performer playing the role of “The Sorriest Lowlife Who Ever Lived”?

And males, did you play opposite “The Sweetest Girl on Earth,” only to find later in the play that she was also billed as “The Biggest Tramp Ever Born”? Those are common characters in the dualistic, relative play. When abiding as the Absolute, no characters exist. Freedom is, among other things, freedom from belief, especially freedom from believing in the false personas that play-actors assume.

Yet what do persons do, even after their “lowest” experiences? Do they say, “Enough with the phony players and the phony play”? Of course not. They conclude that they merely had the misfortune to walk into “a really bad theater” and that they can find happiness on another stage with another actor.

So they leave that stage—or are tossed from the stage—but they do not say, “No play is really fun. None of the play-acting is really worth engaging with those phony actors who wear their masks and hide their true character.” Even after the lowest of the low’s, persons do not conclude, “I would not recommend such drama to anyone.”

They believe, instead, that they must leave that theater and leave that stage and enter into a search for a better actor that they can play their codependent roles with, this time…“forever.”

For the next play, they decide, all they need to do is choose better roles and better actors to play their parts with. So they illogically conclude: “I’m going down the street to the next theater and see what’s playing there. If I think that is a ‘good’ play and not like my last ‘bad’ play, then I’ll get a walk-on role and dedicate myself to playing my same old roles with a better actor this time.”

What most persons will never experience in their own personal dramas is their “peripetia,” that moment which was discussed in the non-duality-based-novel The Board of Directors of Wars. It is that moment when…

…the lead actor finds out that everything he thought to be true is really false; when he sees that he was misled at every turn; when those he thought he could trust the most, and who thought they were telling him the truth, were all wrong. FROM A SITE VISITOR: If the glass I drink from is not real, then how is it that I'm able to drink water from the glass? Michael

F.: Yesterday's post ended with this question:

"How is it that the relative existence is made miserable when I don't know the truth about What I Really Am as opposed to what my culture tells me that I am?"

If your original nature and your natural state are not understood, then fluctuations and chaos will eventually lead to misery and suffering during the relative. If you do know Who/What You Really Are, then you will not abide as that natural state but will abide in the delusional, unnatural state that results when you think you are that which You Are not.

The fluctuations mentioned above will come when you become erroneously identified with relative roles. Why? Because any role that initially brings happiness will eventually bring as much unhappiness since all roles are finite. The chaos mentioned above will come when those constant swings eventually take a toll on the relative body and the fictional "mind" which always generate the emotional intoxication and emotional hangovers that persons experience.

The misery mentioned above will come as the effects of the dependency and co-dependency that are at the core of all role-playing squash the basic instinct to be free. Not knowing Self, the suffering mentioned above will come as each relative role ends and as persons take that end as the death of Self instead of as the end of the playing of another self.

Trying to abide as that which is perceived will result in fluctuations, in chaos, in misery and in suffering, plagued by endless doingness. Only abidance as the Real is stable, marked by endless beingness.

There can never be any lasting sense of freedom if the relative game of role-assigning and role-acceptance is being played. There can never be any stability if you do not know the Reality of the Oneness but believe instead in perceived dualities and perceived multiplicities.

    The Realized, knowing the Absolute and abiding as THAT, know stability and peace and can enjoy the beingness. The non-Realized, tapping into the illusions of the relative, believe they know the dozens and scores of selves that they take to be a definition of who they are;

thus, there is no stability or peace or enjoyment of the beingness. There is the instability and effort and toil of doingness as all of the work and effort required to try to sustain each false image results in a most unnatural state.

If you take the glass to be real as it is perceived, Michael, then you can as easily take a role to be real as perceived. In that, you will lose all freedom and thus all happiness. Why are persons guaranteed to be at the mercy of the slings and arrows of the relative existence if they do not know the Real and abide as That?

Because then a man in a robe can lie to you and pronounce that you are "husband" or "wife"; then, you will no longer have any freedom of choice but will act in the way that the "husband" role or the "wife" role was modeled for you and the way you were programmed and conditioned to believe that such roles are to be played.

Instead of just being in the peace of beingness, you will become caught up in all of the relative illusions of persons...of personas. Participating in that "Drama of the Lie," you will meet all sorts of "characters" as you play your own assumed or assigned roles.

In the "Theater of the Lie," you will be exposed to every extreme of duality. You might meet some men you think are "kind," but you will also meet on that stage certain men who are vicious and brutal to degrees that are unimaginable. You will meet women who will say in anger the most hateful and hurtful words that can be conceived.

You will sting for the entirety of play as your "mind" will register memories of "good" times that have been "lost" and that have been replaced by painful memories that will not go away because in the play you were subjected to the most unjustifiable abuse and neglect by the sociopathic characters you shared the stage with for a time.

Your suffering will continue as long as you stay in the perceived drama as you remain in a co-dependent relationship with long-departed abusers, still allowing them to determine how you feel, still at the mercy of pathological characters who not only could not care less that they inflicted such harm but in fact delight in your unending misery.

Are you seeing why peace can only come from identifying with the Real and ignoring all that is perceived via the warped, conditioned, fictional "mind"? If your (relative) play presently seems to be a comedy, just wait. As long as you are embroiled in the play, someone can always rewrite the ending and make it into a tragedy. Only outside the play are You guaranteed to be free of all such fluctuations.

Continue with the example mentioned earlier when persons allow men in robes to tell them what they are. Taking that role to be who you are, you will feel as if you are dying if a second man in a robe strikes his piece off wood with a gavel and proclaims that you are not a husband or wife.

First, the culture will tell you what you are, then they will as readily tell you that you are not that anymore. Welcome to the fluctuations of the relative existence where perceptions are mistaken for Reality. In fact, What You Are cannot be proclaimed by any man, but it can be understood by all that Realize.

Realized, the label goes, the form remains...temporarily. You know the Real as opposed to the perceived. You understand the following: THAT which is Real is only temporarily manifested via a space. The elements and the air of the glass you mentioned will remain, and the conscious-energy that is in movement at a subatomic level will remain, but the form of "glass" cannot last forever.

Tossed about in the relative, that glass can be in continual movement until is dropped and shattered. The form or space called "glass" is gone, but the elements remain. See the difference in Real vs. perceived? See the constant fluctuations in the relative?

Identified with the relative instead of the Real, all will be marked by the constant movement of doingness and by continuously fluctuating periods of stability and instability. Peace and stability only happen if You know the Real beyond the perceived and abide as THAT. Please enter into the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)

FROM A SITE VISITOR: If the glass I drink from is not real, then how is it that I'm able to drink water from the glass? Michael

F.: Hello, Michael. Thx for the question, but understand that the Advaita-related question is not whether the glass is real or not. The issue is, do you really know what the glass is as opposed to what you, or most persons, think it is? The question is not whether the water is real or not. The issue is, do you really know what the water is as opposed to what you, or most persons, think it is?

The question is not whether the "I" who takes himself to be "The Drinker" is real or not. The issue is, do you really know what that is which you take to be "The Drinker" as opposed to what you, or most persons, think it is? The question is not whether Michael is real or not. The issue is, do you really know what this "michael" is as opposed to what you, or most persons, think he / it is?

It was ignorance that drove certain persons reading the last series to think that one pointer suggested that he who was called "The Christ" was literally an ass (one how-dare-you-complainant even concluding that he was being called "an asshole"). The point is that neither form nor shape identify the real. That which is real, and common to all, is "below" that which is outwardly perceived. "Form" is not reality, whether discussing a man, an animal, a glass or "michael."

The additional pointer, if you would understand the functioning of the totality, is that "jesus" and "a donkey" and "michael" and "floyd" and "maharaj" and "mohammed" and "a glass" and "water" and "persons" or "A Drinker" are never what they appear to be to those observing in ignorance. How is it, at the most basic level, that what is called "The Christ" and what is called "the ass" are the same?

You are invited to see that (a) everything named in the above paragraph, and everything not named but manifested in this relative existence, are all one thing at their most basic level and that (b) their appearances are seemingly different only as a result of variances in vibrational frequency. Again, persons are blocked from Realizing the truth because of ignorance, including ignorance of certain basic scientific principles and facts. Consider the example of the ice cube used in earlier posts:

To call a space or form "an ice cube" and end it there is to block the understanding of the fact that what appears to be an ice cube is really just H2O. Because the non-Realized erroneously believe that all which they are seeing is "different" from all other things or people that they are seeing, then they miss any understanding of the unicity.

When a child in ignorance looks at the varied forms that H2O can assume, the child concludes that a cloud and vapor and a river and a lake and rain and snow and sleet and mist and dew and waterfalls and streams and ponds and pools and puddles and hail are all very different things.

Children, and ignorant adults, will not know that they are looking at one thing that is temporarily assuming varied forms or shapes. They will not know that all of those supposedly different things are really one...really the same H2O + space. When persons are programmed and conditioned to believe in multiplicities, then the unity beyond the supposed multiplicity will remain a foreign concept.

When such misunderstanding and mis-perceiving are applied by "humans" to "humans," it become readily understandable why the ignorant people of the planet can look at their own white skin, for example, and conclude that the persons they perceive as having brown or black or yellow or reddish skin are "different." Once the ignorant reach that conclusion, then a sense of separation is fostered.

From there, false illusions flow; from false illusions, false identities flow ("I am a white person"); and from false identities flow an upgrading or downgrading of illusions and identities ("I am a wonderful white person and I am better than and different from those people who are not white persons.")

From there, perceived differences regarding race and religion and nationality are assumed to be "real." All such mispreceptions are prerequisites for judging and fighting and war and killing and abusing as the unicity is never understood but the multiplicity is taken to be real. From there, egotism always ranks the perceived multiples in a hierarchy of upgraded illusions and downgraded illusions (with the one doing the ranking always putting himself/herself at the top).

It is those illusions and those mis-perceptions that justify arrogance, a sense of separation, attacks, invasions, divorce, discrimination, religious wars, sectarian wars, political wars and all else in the relative existence than sane persons would see as insane.

In fact, all conflicts are based in the insane assumption of ego-states as identities and the attendant egotism that accompanies such assumptions. And that, Michael, is why it is significant (relatively speaking) to differentiate the real from the perceived.

During certain ages in the past, religious persons argued about how many angels could fit on the point of a needle. That was a nonsensical debate. So is the debate about whether a glass is real or not. Let the focus be instead on "What is 'michael,' really?" and "Where was 'michael' in the weeks prior to conception?" and "What was 'he' then?" and "What shall 'he' always be...which is not the form that 'he' sees when gazing into a mirror?"

Let the focus be on "How is it that all is the same?" and "How is it, then, that there is no separation?" and "How it is that I came to erroneously believe that some persons are better than others?" and "How has it come about that some persons believe they are 'better than' and 'different from' others in a way that justifies their judging and killing others?"

And "How is it that I have not only come to believe in illusions but that I also upgrade some of the illusions I believe in and downgrade others that I believe?" and "How is it that the relative existence is made miserable when I don't know the truth about What I Really Am as opposed to what my culture tells me that I am?" Please enter into the silence of contemplation.

An Advaita Vedanta philosophy site, focusing on Realization, enlightenment, nisarga yoga, non-duality (nonduality), your original nature, dwelling as your natural state, and the teachings of Maharaj.

FROM A SITE VISITOR: You say that Christ was taught the Advaita Vedanta message and talked that message at the end, so why not encourage people to go to church and hear his words?

F.: As expected, the pro-Christ, pro-God, anti-“floyd,” pro-church, pro-meetings mail streamed in. The question is always asked of those complainants:

“Why are you visiting this site? Why are you still searching if that which you promote is truly providing peace?

“If not to find something else, if not to find truth, if not to find Self, then that leaves…in order to proselytize…in order to force your beliefs on others. Blogs are free. Begin one to further your cause, but here, there is no debate about a god or gods, and there are no beliefs being offered.

“There is, instead, an invitation to abandon all beliefs since none of them are ‘yours.’ They are all ‘theirs.’ Should ‘their’ beliefs be abandoned, you might find that which You have always known but which ‘their’ programming and conditioning have blocked you from being aware of.

“Here, there are considerations presented as alternatives to myths thought to be true, to superstitions held sacred, to the bondage of programming and conditioning, to the darkness of learned ignorance.

“These considerations could enlighten all but will, instead, be understood only by a few. There is no concern here about persons’ beliefs. Again, there is an invitation to abandon all beliefs since they are not yours…they are 'theirs,' and they haven’t a clue.

“As for the existence of a god or gods, everyone is an atheist. For thousands of years, people believed with all their hearts that Zeus, with his long gray hair and his uncut beard and his flowing white robes, was the supreme god.

“Now, thousands of years later, it is understood that Zeus was a myth, dreamed up by ignorant men. Technically, though, all who refuse to believe in the god Zeus are atheists. Which gray-haired, white robe-wearing god—modeled after Zeus—will be the next to be exposed as an invention of ignorant people?”

“This site offers an alternative that most will never even consider: abandon ‘your/their’ beliefs, Realize what You already know, and be done with it all.”

From the “platform” of My abidance as My natural state, I witness that You Are just as much the ass as You Are “The Christ”—not the form of the ass nor the form of the Christ but the same conscious-energy. So to conclude the discussion:

Christ got off his ass in Jerusalem and participated in all of the bloody drama that followed. That gory play was followed by 2000 years of misunderstanding, especially 2000 years of misunderstanding (and thus ignoring) the few pointers that he offered which were based in the Advaita understanding.

That blood-spattered drama was what marked the final period of the manifestation of that speck of consciousness called “The Christ,” but what was the remainder of the ass’s existence like, by way of contrast?

It was quite natural. A relative existence that unfolds in the style of an ass or a deer is far more peaceful and far saner than an existence that is passed in the style of that speck called “The Christ” with its struggle-to-the-end effort to maintain an upgraded illusion (“man” upgraded to “holy man,” “human” upgraded to “The Son of God”).

But “struggled-to-the-end to maintain his upgraded illusion”? Yes. If the words reportedly spoken from the cross are accurate (though three written accounts all contradict each other) then he obviously abandoned in those final hours of the manifestation his prior Advaita understanding as he recited once again elements of the Jewish dogma that he had been taught early on.

Yet see the truth of his Advaita pointer, if you will, when he said that “a dual-minded person is unstable in all ways.” Thus, if chaos is be abandoned and if stability is to manifest, then the non-dual same-ness…the non-dual oneness must be seen.

Yet I also see from My “platform” that your relative existence can be as miserable as was the case of the one called “The Christ” or that your relative existence can be as free as was the case of the one called “That ass.”

If you would be free of all nonsense, worship neither the Christ nor the ass nor your “self” nor any form nor any words nor any thing, period. If you would Realize, then heed not any teachings that come from those who take themselves to be bodies and minds and personalities and who tell you that you need to learn more of what they have to teach.

If you would Realize, then ignore any who tell you that they know the way for you to be “saved.” Ignore any who report absurdly that the contradictory dualities of “eternal punishment” and “unconditional love” can co-exist.

If you would Realize, then ignore any who talk of The Word without understanding the Advaita words offered by the Christ post-exposure to Advaita teachings. Ignore any who talk of peace and togetherness but foment war and separation, if you would Realize.

Instead, know ThySelf and be free of seeking…in any place. Realize that there’s nothing to save, nothing to gain, nothing to lose. Just be. Don’t be an ass; don’t be “A Christian”; don’t be “A Muslim”; don’t be “A Hindu”; don’t be “An Advaitin”; don’t be any false role. Just be. That is the invitation.

Try for a period to understand what that speck called Jesus was really pointing to when it said, “Before Abraham was, I AM” or “Heaven and earth shall fade away” or “No one shall see the kingdom of heaven for it is within” or “A dual-minded person is unstable in all ways.” If you grasp the Advaita teachings, you will be free.

If that understanding does not come, but you would live spontaneously and naturally and freely, then try to emulate the ass rather than Christ. Why?

Because the ass never assumed any identity and never moved beyond the consciousness of being…beyond the I AM. Conversely, The Christ originally accepted the content of his programming and assumed the persona of “The Son of God.”

He did abandon that ego-state after he was exposed to the Advaita teachings and thereafter downgraded the illusion to (a) “The Son of Man.” Later he would further downgrade the illusion to just being (b) the I AM. But “in the end,” he abandoned the Advaita understanding and returned to his false identities.

If you would be in touch with Reality, “downgrade” your present identity from “The Super Christian” or “The Special Gift from God” or “The Child of God” to the I AM.

Now three options are before you: (1) you can try to live as Christ lived, but why? (2) You can live naturally, as the ass lived. Or (3) you can live naturally, as the I AM. For a time, Christ understood the Advaitin pointers that he was nothing special; that he was merely the son of a man; and that he was the Amness.

Yet he did not Realize Fully and abide for the remainder of the manifestation as his natural state. He succumbed to the power of his early programming. Thus, he was not free and was reportedly complaining at the end about having been “forsaken by God.”

If you can grasp that you and Christ and the ass and “floyd” and “maharaj” were/are nothing more than a speck of temporarily-manifested consciousness, then you have the opportunity to know truth and to be free. Please enter the silence of contemplation.
