An Advaita forum focusing on Realisation / Realization, enlightenment, non-duality, Real Love, peace, freedom, Your original nature, natural abidance, the nothingness, and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

[At the end of this posting there are five videos that discuss thirty-three Advaitin topics]

F.: Michael P., one of the daily visitors to this site, was asked to share his recollections of pointers received during satsangs with Nisargadatta Maharaj, including any pointers that might be relevant to the other visitors to this site. This is the conclusion of what he shared, continued from yesterday.

M.P.: Fast forward three years:

Finished training as a meditation teacher, determined to save the world. Finished law school, working for a big law firm. During the time in the training to become a meditation teacher, heard a talk from my teacher at the time that the whole journey was a “pathless path”. That really stuck with me and puzzled me.

Here we were with a paint-by-the-numbers approach to enlightenment, do this and then this, and then this state results, but here was the teacher saying that it was a pathless path. Thought about it for a long time, and was reminded of what Nisargadatta Maharaj talked about.

So, practicing law while at the same time teaching at the meditation center. Got into hot water for mentioning to other teachers about the "pathless path" and how we were all, on one level, already there.

Asked my teacher about how i was teaching and was told that what i was doing was exactly what he wanted, and i should keep doing what i was doing. Asked about the "pathless path" and he repeated that i should keep doing what i was doing.

Still wondered if that torrent of words Maharaj spoke could be relevant. Read I Am That. Resonated with some of it, some of it seemed confusing and contradictory. Talked the firm into a leave of absence to go back to Europe and India to see my teacher.

While there, bumped into the same friend who had gone to see Nisargadatta Maharaj with me. One day he simply asked, “Wanna go?” We both knew where he meant, and soon after we were again climbing the stairs to Maharaj’s loft.

Got to ask Maharaj my burning question: "My teacher had prescribed a path, yet said it was a pathless path. Maharaj had followed his teacher’s instruction to abide in the I Am, yet he said that the I AM, the THAT, was never born, will never die, we are THAT, so what was to be done?"

The same intense stare from Maharaj, and after some time he said something like (again, the gaze quieted the mind so much couldn’t really think) that he was speaking from his level of consciousness, and that i was trying to use the information as an individual, and he was not speaking as an individual.

Said that i still wanted to be the one to travel the pathless path, but until i realized the unreality of that one who wanted to travel any path, even a pathless path, all my study was for naught and would be just more ignorance.

Although the words didn’t make sense at the time, something was going on in the awareness that was so profoundly still i could barely breathe, much less speak. He told me i was seeking the experience of beingness but needed to experience the non-beingness, and that which is beyond that. i’m sure my facial expression was like a dog who had just been shown a card trick.

Talked of the space in the loft being the same as the space in the street outside, which i took to mean the consciousness of the individual was the same consciousness.

The recent posts of Maharaj Mendum Menda, which caused strong resonance, had me recalling an exchange with Maharaj during that visit. He was NOT happy with my question of whether abiding in consciousness would make my material life better. Very not happy! Shouting again.

Don’t really remember much of the answer, but he said something like did i think he was some wallah (seller) of false knowledge about a false self sold by those who only wanted money and prestige from the ignorant who would be sold/told how to get that by meditating.

Was told that all of this would lead to suffering and misery. (While i sensed he was talking about my teacher at the time, i was so startled by his intensity, i don’t remember exactly what was said, but he was NOT pleased by this question. i sensed that he knew i believed, and had a lot ‘invested’ in the fact that i had, chosen the one and only path to enlightened bliss and material success!)

Again, wanted to disappear. Asked me who i was eight days before conception. Again, the mind stopped. Several days of going to see him, listening to the ceremony he performed to his teacher, scribbling notes when i could, trying to soak it all in.

The last day, Maharaj told me to stay in the Self, and i would not need him or any other teacher, that the Self was the only true teacher. While i at least had some better idea of what he meant than the first time i heard him, was still so steeped in the paradigm of my teacher at the time, i could not make sense of much of it.

Yet, i sensed that there was much power in what he said, even though i had little understanding. Thirty years later, those words still resonate, still bring stillness. At the time, i didn’t realize the value of those words, the fact that i was hearing pure, unvarnished, no-punches-pulled Truth with a capital T.

The recent posts and pointers here, particularly those that talk about Maharaj’s teachings about the mind, resonated. They reminded me very much of Maharaj’s intensity and uncompromised teaching.

i can only imagine how he would respond to recent, popular, ‘now’ teachings. Thanks so much for presenting the pointers and teachings without compromise. m.

Five Free eBooks

Compliments of Andy Gugar, Jr.,
the following eBooks are available without charge for you or for friends:

I.
"GOOD vs. EVIL?" or "IGNORANCE, STUPIDITY, and INSANITY?"

The content of this eBook deals with one of the most common but erroneous beliefs that the non-Realized masses cling to and which they will fight about (and even kill over), namely, that there is a planet-wide duel going on between “the forces of good and evil” in the universe.

Either (1) the ancient view is spot on: that the "ills of the planet" are rooted in evil people, in people not being religious enough or spiritual enough, and are caused solely by bad morality; or, (2) the "ills of the planet" are rooted in ignorance, stupidity and insanity and "being good" or "being moral" does not put an end to ignorance, does not eliminate stupidity, and does not treat insanity in any way.

II.
"THE VISION"

Comments regarding the free eBook entitled “THE VISION”:

“My thanks to you and Andy.” – Andrew “Mac” McMaster

“Thanks so much for the book! And, by the way, it is brilliant and the most effective pointing that you have done. It has served to help clear the remaining blockages.” – Stan Cross

“Greatly appreciate having “THE VISION” added to my Henderson resource library that is situated on the right side of my bed for easy access! Eternally grateful for what was received and what was given.” – Robert Rigby

“‘THE VISION’ is such a well-written, condensed version of the Nisarga Yoga approach to understanding and enjoying Reality that I feel it can serve as a must-read ‘meditation guide’ for all earnest seekers.” – Andy Gugar, Jr.

III.
"Sapolsky, Maharaj, and the Non-Dual Teachings"

Dr. Robert Maurice Sapolsky is an American neuroendocrinologist; a professor of biology, neuroscience, and neurosurgery at Stanford University; a researcher; an author; and a Research Associate at the National Museums of Kenya.

There is much that a non-dualist or Advaitin or Nisargan can relate to by comparing and contrasting what Sapolsky reveals about the way certain troops of baboons live in Africa with the way that humans abide all around the globe.

This 152-page eBook catalogues the common, non-dual message shared by Sapolsky and Maharaj and reveals the ways that Sapolsky’s scientific research supports the non-dual pointers offered by Maharaj.

IV.
Seeking

In “PART ONE” it will be seen that most persons on the planet are not seeking, and most will never seek, but for those who are seeking, most will face several obstacles:

In “PART TWO” of this book, it will be seen why many criticized Maharaj for “changing his message in his later talks.” It will be seen that the changes were not about changing the message per se as much as about changing his methodology as he experimented with one version of the Ultimate Medicine after another in order to try to find an effective means for addressing the Ultimate Sickness.

He tried a religious version of the Medicine, a Spiritual version of the Medicine, and finally settled on a version which addressed to Sickness at its core . . . at the mental and emotional level.

V.
"THE MOST DANGEROUS BELIEF OF ALL"

“Dangerous” is a term that can only apply during the relative existence, but of those who do commit suicide, for example, how many shoot themselves in the foot over and over until they “bleed out”? None. They shoot themselves in the head. Why? In order to try to stop the noise - to try to stop the chatter of a thousand monkeys – to stop the noisy mind which is the area that stores the ideas, notions, concepts, mind-stuff, etc. which drives them into the depths of insanity.

And what are those ideas, notions, concepts, etc. called, collectively? "Their beliefs." The irony? They are not their beliefs at all. They are the beliefs of “others” that were set in place via programming, conditioning, etc. and which persons then think are their own.

And what are those beliefs rooted in, and what reinforces those beliefs and convinces persons that they are sacred and worth fighting over and even sometimes worth dying for? Blind faith.

This 337-page eBook discusses those issues in detail.
