Also, as for Maharaj, you will find more of the message that he offered in his later talks. During his last years, he said of I AM THAT: "That book and whatever was expounded at that time was only relevant for that period. I am speaking differently today" and am "emphasizing different aspects." His final understanding, quite different from what he offered early on, is the basis of pointers offered to seekers well along the "path." Maharaj made clear at the end that the pointers in I AM THAT will take you to the midpoint of "the race"; only the pointers in his final talks point the way to "the finish line."

F.: Prior to the duality-generating mix of programming + conditioning + domestication + acculturation, there are the genetically-transmitted, dualistic, archetypal images that amount to innate duality.

Archetypal images include characters, such as:

"The Mother" and "The Father"

"The Hero" and "The Villain"

"The Sage" and "The Fool"

and hundreds of others; thus, persons come pre-wired to accept roles as reality and pre-wired to accept as true identities whatever labels and roles and personas are assigned to them.

Additionally, archetypal images come in dualistic pairs such as:

"light vs. dark" and "white vs. black"

"good vs. bad"

"wet vs. dry" or "dry vs. wet" (depending on whether persons believe that there has been "too much rain" or "too little")

"up vs. down" and "high vs. low"

"together vs. apart or alone"

"strong vs. weak" and

"big vs. small."

More recent images have been added to the mix as well, including:

"pretty or handsome vs. ugly"

"wealthy vs. poor"

"successful vs. a failure"

"smart vs. dumb"

"tall vs. short"

"powerful vs. not"

"religious vs. hedonistic"

"spiritual vs. not"

"good weather vs. bad weather"

"good days vs. bad days"

"happy vs. unhappy"

"upper class vs. lower class" and

"good memories vs. bad memories."

The latter duality functions in the same fashion as do personalities, bringing desires and fears which rob persons of a sense of harmony and which rob them of any chance at finding stability.

Maharaj: "Desire is the memory of pleasure and fear is the memory of pain. Both make the mind restless. Moments of pleasure are merely gaps in the stream of pain. How can the mind be happy?"

yet

Maharaj: "Your world is mind-made, subjective, enclosed within the mind, fragmentary, temporary, personal, hanging on the thread of memory."

Questioner: "So is yours."

Maharaj: "Oh no. I live in a world of realities, while yours is of imagination. In reality there are no persons, only threads of memories and habits. At the moment of realisation the person ceases."

Because the masses are not realized, then everything they experience is seen through a distorting lens; then, that distorted view is filed away in the storage area of "the mind."

A triggering event or scene can cause the stored memory of that earlier event to be retrieved from the storage area and to be taken in the present as an accurate recall of the way things were.

But can something originally seen in a distorted fashion be recalled later in a way that is not distorted? Of course not. Type a word document filled with typos, save it to the storage area of your computer, retrieve the file later, and you will have recalled not only the original document but all of the original errors as well.

Moving through the relative existence while being driven by

(1) archetypal images that are passed down genetically and by

(2) new images assumed to be real and by

(3) persona
-inspired thoughts and words and deeds and by

(4) delusional mental / emotional stimuli and by

(5) distorted memories

will result in the belief in "a world" that is pleasing at times and most displeasing even more often.

How to be free of the belief that images are real, that distortions are fact, and that "this world" or "others" are not providing what is required (and deserved) for you to be stable and happy?

Maharaj: "I do not need the world. Nor am I in one. The world you think of is in your own mind. I can see it through your eyes and mind, but I am fully aware that it is a projection of memories; it is touched by the real only at the point of awareness, which can be only now"

and

"Memory creates ... illusion ..."

and

"I don't live by memory. I see the world as it is, a momentary appearance in consciousness."

Yet how many on the planet are unhappy or even miserable (and, therefore, completely unstable) as a result of appearances ... as a result of mirages that are arising from the fiction-filled "mind"?

How else to be free?

Maharaj: "You cannot be alive for You are life itself. It is the person you imagine yourself to be that suffers, not You. Dissolve it in awareness. It is merely a bundle of memories and habits. From the awareness of the unreal to the awareness of Your real nature there is a chasm which you will easily cross, once you have mastered the art of pure awareness."

And how else to be free?

By understanding that all misery is rooted in dualities such as those listed below which drive misperception which, in turn, will result in a sense of need and, eventually, a sense of emptiness:

"full vs. empty"

"enough vs. not enough"

"less vs. more"

"de-accumulation vs. accumulation"

"everything is going to be okay vs. nothing is going to be okay at all"

"optimism vs. pessimism," ad infinitum.

All such dualistic misperceptions will prevent any chance for you to enjoy freedom from instability and unwavering peace which can come ...

... only when taking a position of neutrality

... only when witnessing objectively whatever unfolds (or does not unfold)

... only when seeing all (a) through the clear lens of Realization rather than (b) through the distorted lens of memory

... only when abiding spontaneously rather than trying to control and

... only when abiding spontaneously rather than generating the chaos that follows efforts to try to control.

After all of your efforts to control and direct and solve and avoid and avert and gain, what can you admit has been the end result, truly? Have you succeeded?

After all of your efforts to acquire what you think you need to be happy and stable, if you acquired that, have you succeeded at being consistently happy and consistently stable?

After all of your efforts to acquire what you think you need to be happy and stable, if you have not acquired that, are you not yet tired enough? Are you not yet tired enough to give up a desire for what is not and to find happiness and stability within the parameters of what already is?

Have you not witnessed the deer and learned what they can teach? Hot or cold, do they not move right along? If they are ill, do they run and fight and struggle, or do they rest? If storms come, do they race into the storm to "take it on" and try to control it, or do they huddle down and wait - calmly - for the storm to pass?

Do they create chaos? Do they try to control even one thing, much less try to control everything?

"Sapolsky, Maharaj, and the Non-Dual Teachings"

Dr. Robert Maurice Sapolsky is an American neuroendocrinologist; a professor of biology, neuroscience, and neurosurgery at Stanford University; a researcher; an author; and a Research Associate at the National Museums of Kenya.

There is much that a non-dualist or Advaitin or Nisargan can relate to by comparing and contrasting what Sapolsky reveals about the way certain troops of baboons live in Africa with the way that humans abide all around the globe.

This 152-page eBook catalogues the common, non-dual message shared by Sapolsky and Maharaj and reveals the ways that Sapolsky’s scientific research supports the non-dual pointers offered by Maharaj.

IV.
Seeking

In “PART ONE” it will be seen that most persons on the planet are not seeking, and most will never seek, but for those who are seeking, most will face several obstacles:

In “PART TWO” of this book, it will be seen why many criticized Maharaj for “changing his message in his later talks.” It will be seen that the changes were not about changing the message per se as much as about changing his methodology as he experimented with one version of the Ultimate Medicine after another in order to try to find an effective means for addressing the Ultimate Sickness.

He tried a religious version of the Medicine, a Spiritual version of the Medicine, and finally settled on a version which addressed to Sickness at its core . . . at the mental and emotional level.

V.
"THE MOST DANGEROUS BELIEF OF ALL"

“Dangerous” is a term that can only apply during the relative existence, but of those who do commit suicide, for example, how many shoot themselves in the foot over and over until they “bleed out”? None. They shoot themselves in the head. Why? In order to try to stop the noise - to try to stop the chatter of a thousand monkeys – to stop the noisy mind which is the area that stores the ideas, notions, concepts, mind-stuff, etc. which drives them into the depths of insanity.

And what are those ideas, notions, concepts, etc. called, collectively? "Their beliefs." The irony? They are not their beliefs at all. They are the beliefs of “others” that were set in place via programming, conditioning, etc. and which persons then think are their own.

And what are those beliefs rooted in, and what reinforces those beliefs and convinces persons that they are sacred and worth fighting over and even sometimes worth dying for? Blind faith.
