As for Maharaj, you will find here some of his early pointers for beginners and some of his later pointers that are for seekers farther along the "path." During his last years, he said of I AM THAT: "That book and whatever was expounded at that time was only relevant for that period. I am speaking differently today" and am "emphasizing different aspects." What he offered later differed considerably from his earlier talks, making clear that the pointers in I AM THAT will take you to the midpoint of "the race" but that his final talks point the way to "the finish line."
F.: A most curious claim is made by the members of certain groups, namely, "I cannot help me, but I can help you, and you cannot help you, but you can help me."
That irrational statement is tantamount to claiming, "You are drowning and I cannot swim but I can save you, and I am drowning and you cannot swim but you can save me." Quite the illogical and deceptive and self-deceptive (and egotism-based) statement, yes?
As noted here before, the sick cannot heal the sick - they can but spread their sickness; and when it is the Ultimate Sickness that is being spread, most assuredly the Ultimately Sick cannot heal the Ultimately Sick.
"Surely he is not going to disparage helping and rescuing and saving, all activities that are unquestioningly applauded by the masses on a planet-wide basis?!" The invitation is to consider what is often actually behind those efforts before automatically joining in with the acclaim.
There are those trapped in their God-Complex, controlling, I-know-exactly-how-to-help-you ego-states (and the egotism that supports their roles and beliefs) who are driven by one or more of the notions that:
a. "I know what you need and can provide it";
or
b. "I am darn-near perfect and can show you how to be darn-near perfect too";
or
c. "If I rescue you, you will give me the love that I seek from so many people";
or
d. "I will rescue you and then you will owe me forever and I will literally own you."
What they will not say is this:
e. "I want to appear to be most altruistic, even though some people see through the act and discover that I am actually most paternalistic; facts be known, everything I do really has an ulterior motive - namely, to gain whatever I want - and to have the kind of control over others that a parent has over a child. Your indebtedness to me will give me power over you and will feed my egotism-driven grandiosity and my personality's desire to control and my desire to gain everything I want and to have whatever and whomever I wish."
The attitude of those driven by the agenda of "The Rescuer Persona," "The Savior Persona," and "The Helper Persona" was expressed in a W.H. Auden quote: "We are all here on earth to help others; what on earth the others are here for I don't know."
Playing such a "god-like" role, those types will become controlling and possessive and jealous, there always being a hidden price that comes with accepting their "saving."
Moreover, "The Rescuers," "The Saviors," and "The Helpers," if investigated thoroughly, are the most needy; additionally, their assistance is never altruistic but is cunningly selfish as they try to satisfy their desire to control and to earn "love" (i.e., to buy "love").
In the end, they will play "The Parent" role and will try to pigeon-hole others into "The Child" role, eliminating any possibility of Adult-to-Adult interaction. As in The Wizard of Oz, when the curtain is drawn back on such types, what is often revealed more often is something quite different from what is seemingly seen at first glance; what is often revealed in not a "Helper" at all but is just another controlling "User" instead.
Those who think they are going to be the beneficiary of the "Parent Type / Helper's" assistance soon find that what at first appeared to be a cavalry on the horizon, racing to their assistance, was actually a marauding band of conquerors.
Questioner: "All I want to know is how to deal with the world's sorrows."
Maharaj: "You have created them out of your own desires and fears; you deal with them. All is due to your having forgotten Your own being. Having given reality to the picture on the screen, you love its people and suffer for them and seek to save them. It is just not so. You must begin with yourself"
and
Maharaj: "Why do you worry about the world before taking care of yourself? You want to save the world, don't you? Can you save the world before saving yourself? And what means 'being saved'? Saved from what? From illusion."
Yet the sick who think that they can make others well do not even know that they are sick. They are convinced that they are the most well of all, so why would they seek help when they are "The Providers of Help Who Need Nothing"? their belief being: "Begin with myself? Surely you jest!"
Maharaj: "What business have you with saving the world, when all the world needs is to be saved from you? Get out of the picture and see whether there is anything left to save."
In an earlier post, there was offered an example of an incident that happened in the early 1980's when "floyd's" psychic disintegration drove him into the role of "The God-Like Helper" who thought he knew what others needed when, in fact, he knew not what he needed, much less what anyone else needed:
Note how in error “floyd” was when he was sure in the past that the thought that led him to organize an annual coat drive for the homeless was a "positive" thought. When trapped in “The Helper” persona, he arranged a citywide drive to collect coats that would be distributed (once freezing temperatures arrived) to those living under bridges and in boxes in the downtown area of Houston.
One February, coats were being distributed in that economically-depressed area where many homeless persons lived in boxes. I called a man out of the refrigerator box that was his home, helped him into one of the better coats collected, watched him wrap himself in it as if it were a warm blanket, and then asked him how it felt.
The man in the box was amazed at how comfortable he was after being wrapped inside the coat for only a few moments. He declared that I was his “guardian angel” and then shared part of the content of a conversation he had with a man in the next box over when they had talked earlier that morning:
“I told him, ‘That’s it! That’s the last night I live on the streets and freeze my a** off!! Today, I get a job … mopping floors at McDonalds … picking up garbage … whatever.’ But now you done showed up and took care of my problem. God bless you, brother. God bless you!”
And with that, he crawled back into his refrigerator box. More exactly, “floyd’s” entrapment in personality and ego and egotism put that man back in the box. There came one of those rare instances of a pre-Full Realization awareness that I had no clue whatsoever about what is “good vs. bad,” about what is “positive vs. negative,” or about what anyone “needs.”
I had taken from a man the motivation to seek employment that might have moved him out of the box completely, yet even now there is no claim that even that move would have been a "positive" outcome. I do not know, and neither does anyone else who claims to know what others need and what is absolutely positive and what is absolutely negative. That all involves duality, and there is no such thing as any "dualistic truth."
The men and women participating in the drive were told to get in the vans and trucks—that the drive was over. When they asked what was to be done with the rest of the coats, it was suggested they drop them off at the Goodwill Store or anywhere else they might choose.
The annual coat drive would be no more because there would be no “one” to be driven by the arrogant notion that he knew exactly what anyone in particular needed or did not need; because there would be no "one" seeking strokes and applause and recognition for things only supposedly done in an altruistic fashion;
because there would no longer be that “one” who was so sure that he was being driven by positive thoughts and positive motives; because there would be no “one” left to think that the square pegs of “absolutely positive thoughts” and “absolutely negative thoughts” could ever be forced into the round holes of that which is completely relative;
and because there would no longer be one who sought to gain by giving, who sought to buy by helping, who sought to own by assisting, who sought to be loved and admired for saving, who sought to make others dependent by rescuing.
So much for "Saviors and Rescuers and Helpers" targeting the ones who they think need their saving, their rescuing, their helping. But what of their potential targets, the ones who want to be saved?
Maharaj: "That which sees all this, and the nothing too, is the inner teacher. [That] alone is; all else only appears to be. [That] is Your Own Self, your assurance of freedom; find [that] and cling to [that] and you will be saved and safe."
Thus ...
1. before trying to rescue the drowning, learn first to swim yourself;
2. before running about and trying to rescue others, find that from which you need rescuing;
3. if suffering from the Ultimate Sickness, seek only the Ultimate Medicine; and
4. if you take yourself to be a physician (or , "The Rescuer Persona," "The Savior Persona," "The Helper Persona" or "The Parent in Charge of the World's Children") heal thyself first before trying to heal anyone else.
Of course, that's just a suggestion.
