TODAY’S CONSIDERATIONS

Maharaj: "It is the dance of the conscious presence."

So who is not interested in dancing through whatever remains of the relative existence in the lightest manner possible but is, instead, intent on stomping about and smashing about and tramping about and marching about? The answer: A wide range of “WHO’s,” that is, persons who have been assigned or who have assumed a variety of false identities, personality identifications, ego-states, etc. What do they have in common?

For one, they are fanatical. Relatedly, they are trapped in obsessive thinking; thus, they are also driven to behave impulsively, compulsively. Additionally, they all take themselves (their false selves) very seriously. And some - be they “on the path” or “on a journey” or engaged in super seeking activities and claiming to be “Realized” or “Enlightened” - take their “Selves” very seriously (including their “True Self,” their “Real Self,” their “Supreme Self,” their “Infinite Self,” their "God Union," or their "God-ness").

Now, they may present as reformers; as converters; as saviors and helpers and healers; as supposedly great achievers; as supposedly great teachers; as supposedly great jnanis or knowers or know-it-alls; as supposedly great guardians and protectors of businesses or communities or nations; and / or as supposedly great leaders of businesses, governments, religions, or spiritual groups.

The roles presented matter not. They will all be fanatical about accumulating wealth or fanatical about their fanatical candidates or fanatical about proselytizing or fanatical about cultivating a public image of goodness and godliness or fanatical about punishing or destroying those who question them or oppose them. But above that, they will all take themselves (or Their Selves) far too seriously.

A visitor to the loft said to Maharaj: “I do not like this lila (play) idea. I would rather compare the world to a work-yard in which we are the builders.”

Maharaj’s reply: “You take it too seriously. What is wrong with play?”

Another offered this hypothetical: “The doctor tells you the condition is serious. There are only a few days to live. What would be your first reaction?”

Maharaj: “No reaction. As it is natural for the incense stick to burn out, so it is natural for the body to die. Really, it is a matter of very little importance.”

That was the perspective when a doctor said that I had a serious medical condition . . . cancerous polyps. There was no reaction. Only the response: “So, tell me what the typical treatment plan is and I’ll let you know if I’m willing to do that.”

[His look was one of shock, of course. For crying, screaming, wailing, etc., he likely had a host of routine answers. For non-attachment and no emotional reaction? Not so much.]

Recall this earlier pointer: Realization results in lightness, not heaviness. A sure sign of realization is evidenced by a lack of excessive seriousness and the presence of frequent laughter. Post-realization, any further involvement with the teachings is just for entertainment, is just part of the dance.

To transcend all sense of personal, individualized WHO-ness is to abide in the sweet respite of beingness, and when the incredible lightness of just being manifests, and when all is merely witnessed from the platform of Your Original Nature, what WHO could be taken seriously when it thinks it needs more to be anything, including happy?

To be continued.

Please enter into the silence of contemplation.
