F.: It has been seen, therefore, that most on the planet behave as contrary persons or as contrarians or as the Realized. The first two are usually driven by personality for the entire relative existence, and the Realized were driven by personality prior to liberation.
Contrary persons are usually driven by the Type Eight personality and behave as “The Combative One,” “The Controlling One,” “The Angry, Raging One,” or, under the influence of extreme stress or arrogance, “The Sociopath.”
Contrarians are usually driven by the Type Three personality; however, whereas contrarians consciously state the opposite of what they believe, Threes are capable of “putting a spin” on all events in order to appear to be right and to be perceived as successful.
Furthermore, while a contrarian, assessing something that most would call "horrible" might claim “It's all good,” the Type Three will say the same but will actually come to believe it. Where psychic health allows most disturbances to be processed in 15 minutes or less, processing for Threes comes quickly but amounts to self-deception and self-delusion rather than actual processing.
That tendency makes a Three appear to be "an always positive optimist" unless the listener can hear the delusion and self-deception behind the spin that Threes put on every happening during their relative existence. The drive of that personality type is to be successful, and "negatives" or "mistakes" are not success. That is also why a Three will often be mistaken for “The Perfectionist,” always denying that any problems they cause are even problems.
Prior to Realization, personality also drives those assuming the role of “The Seeker” or “The One Searching for the Authentic Self.” Along the way, “The Religious One” or “The Super Spiritual One” are personalities that drive the seeker as well.
Post-Realization, all personality ends. Thereafter, Advaitins might be mistaken as contrary persons because they do share pointers that are in direct opposition to “conventional wisdom” (a.k.a., learned ignorance). Yet they do not debate for the sake of debate but for the sake of bringing about Realization.
Too, while they might appear to some persons to be contrarians, Advaitins do not say the opposite of what they know to be true. They might appear to do so only because they sometimes speak in what is considered an ironic fashion to those attached to the widely-held beliefs of the masses. For example:
When fully enlightened and Realized, abidance first happens as the lightless void; then, it is understood that the void is bathed in light that is only visible when reflected. Thereafter, the fullness of the understanding of the functioning of the manifest consciousness becomes clear along with an understanding of the totality as well.
Knowing happens in the absence of a knower.
Those who once thought they would die come to know that they were never even born.
Those who might have thought they would experience multiple births come to understand that they have not even been born once and that they have never had any “experience.”
Those who thought that they were happy at times and sad at times come to understand that there is no “one” to be either; then, belief in duality comes to an end.
Misunderstanding also happens because the Realized Advaitin teacher will offer only level-appropriate pointers to a listener; thus, one seeker that is only beginning the “journey” might be offered one consideration and then another seeker farther along the “path” might be told something completely different; however, that is what the second seeker needs to hear in order to move to the next step on the "path."
Most persons will never grasp the wisdom shared by the pure consciousness as it speaks because, even if the wisdom is heard, the point will seem to the masses to be esoteric or impenetrable or totally senseless.
That will always be the case if pointers to Truth are spoken in the presence of one who cannot hear…in the presence of one who “speaks only English but hears in Swahili”;
who believes that she/he is always right; who is convinced that his/her beliefs are beyond question; and who has been programmed and conditioned to have faith and to never doubt any of the lies and myths that they have been taught and that they accept as truth. So it is.
The Realized eventually transcend personality; most who are contrary or who are contrarians or who are among the mesmerized masses will never be free of the influence of personality. They can engage fully in the activities of a self-help group and can talk the group-talk and the parrot-speak, but short of Full Realization, their thoughts and words and deeds will be determined not by the teachings or precepts of their group but by personality;
they can work on developing “positive thinking” and “caring about the world and their fellow man” and “being of service” and “making the world a better place,” but short of Full Realization, their thoughts and words and actions will, in the end, be driven by personality;
and they can engage fully in the activities of their temple or church or mosque or a "spiritual group" that is designed to address their personality defects and their personality disorders and their insanity, but their thoughts and words and deeds will be determined more by personality than by dogma or morality lessons or precepts or slogans or the teachings offered in those organizations.
Lip service notwithstanding and “putting up a front” notwithstanding and fostering a false image notwithstanding, the masks which cover their actuality will always fall away—even if for brief periods of time—and the power of personality will be seen to be the prevailing force in their lives.
Personality, if not transcended, will even trump their god(s). Please enter into the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)
