18. What Maharaj came to understand was that the Ultimate Sickness is a mental sickness, so the use of the loft evolved as his understanding of the Sickness evolved. Originally, the loft was used in some ways as a "mini-temple" where locals were invited to come upstairs and participate in religious dancing and the singing of bhajans, etc. (with a smattering of non-dual pointers sneaked in when possible).
Next, it was used as a "mini-ashram" or as a sort of "locale for spiritual retreats" as Maharaj began catering more and more to Westerners who were interested in assuming and expanding their role of "A Spiritual Giant."
Eventually, Maharaj came to see that the Sickness is not caused by too little religion (and is actually aggravated by too much religion); later, he also saw that, in spite of all his spiritual talks, few ever grasped the understanding with that approach.
Once he saw that the main problem with the Sickness centers in the mind, he began using the loft as a "psychological laboratory" or as a "counseling office" where the focus shifted away from religion and spirituality and zeroed in solely on the actual mental roots of the Sickness.
All along he knew that one of the greatest contributing factors to the Sickness was body and mind and personality identification; it is obvious that he also came to understand even more about the mind and personality roots of the Sickness.
He obviously came to understand (without knowing the terms used by psychologists and therapists nowadays, terms such as "modeling" and "enmeshing" and "internalizing" and "identifying with") that the mental problems of adults were being passed along to children, that those children were growing up to be adults with mental problems, and that they were thereafter passing their mental problems on to the next generation, ad infinitum.
By way of modeling what their parents do and internalizing their parents as "self" and identifying with their parents completely, children adopt their parents' ways of thinking and talking and behaving. By way of enmeshment, children are blocked from developing an inner sense of "who they are" because of the programming and conditioning and domestication and acculturation and brainwashing and indoctrination to which they are exposed.
Once enmeshment is firmly set in place, then there is no such thing as "a child's own intuitive sense," as "a child's own thoughts," as "a child's own beliefs," as "a child's own opinions," as "a child's own hobbies and interests," etc. The child's early sense that it is, let's say, its mother has nothing to do with understanding the Oneness. It has to do with enmeshment and modeling and parroting. Unhealthy dependencies and co-dependencies, unhealthy attainments, and unhealthy entanglements will be guaranteed to manifest.
All the assertions about "being different from my parents when I have children" notwithstanding, most model the thoughts and words and actions of their early programmers, conditioners, etc., and because those thoughts and words and actions which are modeled were passed along by way of persons with perverted minds which had been filled with fictional nonsense that is taken to be fact, then the words and thoughts and actions which are recycled are guaranteed to produce the symptoms of the Ultimate Sickness which Maharaj identified (including heavy doses of "ignorance" and "insanity").
Maharaj came to see that if the pattern of continuously recycling ignorance and personality disorders and neuroses and psychoses and insanity from one generation to the next was ever to be interrupted, then there must be something else to model (other than the thoughts and words and actions of persons who are driven by ignorance and nonsense and insanity).
Thus, Maharaj finally found the effective treatment - the real Ultimate Medicine - which can be used to cure the Ultimate Sickness that ails on a near-universal basis all of the masses all around the globe. The treatment involves, first, seeing one's insanity; the next requirement is seeing clearly that it came as a result of having modeled insane programmers and conditioners and having been enmeshed with them; then finally, what is required for the restoration of sanity - and then peace and freedom and wisdom - is the understanding that there is something different to model from what has been modeled so far throughout one's entire existence.
It must be understood that there is that / That (1) which has none of the traits and mental illnesses and distorted ideas and concepts and notions and misperceptions and delusions (a.k.a., "beliefs") which are at the root of the near-universal Sickness and (2) which can serve as a model which can, in turn, allow the remainder of the manifestation to unfold in a sane and sound and wise manner. Should that which Maharaj endorsed as an effective model were to be used, then the ability to just be, and to abide simply, can manifest.
So what term did he use to point to that / That different model that is available? He called it, "Your Original Nature." And what are some of the additional properties which that / That "substitute model" includes? As discussed in the eBook below entitled "Your Original Nature," these may be added to the lists of "traits" or "characteristics" or "conditions" which have already been offered:
[Note: In that Original State, there were none of the concepts which are being touted by the "Big Name Teachers" whom Maharaj warned seekers to stay away from. Some of their concepts were mentioned in the list yesterday. Others include the following.]
In your Original State which You can can begin modeling right now, even during the manifestation . . .
"You were not concerned with the concepts of "an ageless body" or "a timeless mind," and You were not concerned with trying to spontaneously "fulfill desires"; You were neither ennobling "suffering and pain and misery" nor crediting those with "making you stronger"; You were not concerned with learning "religious or spiritual laws" which can supposedly tell you how you are supposed to live; and You were most certainly not interested in learning "other spiritual laws which can provide you with success or material wealth or blessings both now and later." [Recall how more than once Maharaj invited "richard" to see that fact.]
"You were not seeking to know a god or a God; You were not seeking blessings from hundreds and thousands of gods and goddesses. You were not trying to distort reality or Reality by loving things that are not lovable or accepting things that are not acceptable. You were not inspired constantly to "put a spin on" facts and truth, and You did not use denial or a "head in the sand approach" in order to "look better in public" and "feel better."
"You were not concerned with anything relative, with being or not being, with who-ness or WHO-ness, with self-ness or Self-ness, with an imaginary do-er, with "one" or "someone," with nonsense, or with nonsensical concepts such as "personhood."
The question then becomes, "What can you once more be like if abiding as Your Original Nature, right now?"
The fact is that every one of those "Original Conditions" "there" and "then" can apply to you "here" and "now"; however, if out of touch with that Original You-ness, then all of the "Non-Original" conditions which were passed on by modeling ignorance and insanity will continue to mark and mar the relative existence. Why? Because all "Non-Original" conditions are based in the illusions and delusions and distortions and ignorance and insanity that the assumed-but-false "you's" (that is, the "not-You") will take to be real.
Nowadays, when ignorance and insanity are witnessed throughout the day, every day, there is no way of knowing specifically with whom one might have enmeshed or of knowing who is being modeled. It could be a parent, a relative, a friend, a religious leader, a so-called spiritual adviser, a politician, a guru, a lover, a spouse, a sponsor, or any of the thousands of other persons who are about the business of influencing others and passing along nonsense and doctrine and ideology and dogma and spiritual principles and all sorts of beliefs which are typically accepted without questioning, on faith alone, but which would be seen to be lies were those beliefs questioned openly and objectively and wisely and consciously via the used of the unadulterated awareness.
What is clear, however, is what is not being modeled: namely, "The Original Nature."
