An Advaita forum focusing on Realisation, enlightenment, non-duality, Real Love, peace, freedom, Your original nature, abiding naturally, the Oneness, the Nothingness, and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

Here, there is nothing that is believed, so there is no one here who wants you to believe anything, either. Here, the invitation is to be free of all that you have been programmed, conditioned, acculturated, and domesticated to believe so that you can be free, period.

F.: Today marks the end of sharing Advaita Vedanta Quotes and Pointers from Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, Dennis Waite, Louise Sterling, and Floyd Henderson which have been offered for your consideration:

Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

"The Guru tells you ‘Get rid of concepts, just be yourself’. The seeker having understood what the Guru said, gets rid of the concepts, and now, as the first step, the seeker dwells in the state ‘I am’, just being. First of all there is the knowingness ‘I am’, without words; with that knowingness, the world is. Now when the seeker goes into meditation that knowingness goes into no-knowingness. This is the highest state in the hierarchy when the body aspect is there because this knowing and no-knowing are aspects of the body, and body means consciousness, and in the realm of consciousness, knowingness and no-knowingness exist. The Absolute transcends knowingness and no-knowingness."

"In that body the ‘I am’ is ticking – that is the Guru. You worship that ‘I am’ principle and surrender to that Guru and that Guru will give all the grace. What you call ‘I am’ and birth, you are not that, it is material. The Ultimate Knowledge does not have any knowledge. This knowledge ‘I am’ has appeared spontaneously, as a result of the body. See it as it is, understand it as it is."

"The ‘Linga-deha’ is the seed, the chemical, the product of the five elemental essences which give rise to and sustain the consciousness ‘I am’. Just like the seed of a tree, that seed latently contains all future manifestations and expressions of the tree that will sprout out of the seed. You take a fountain pen and on the paper you put a drop of ink, so that drop is the ‘Linga-deha’. That drop is the moment of conception; its expression is the thought-free state, like space, in the knowingness state. That ‘Linga-deha’, that little drop, and the knowledge ‘I am’ is the same."

"When you are the space you are no more the body, but whatever is contained in that space You Are. You are now manifest – whatever is known – the space. This space is known as ‘chidakash’. In 'chidakash' this knowingness is ‘I am’. In the highest ‘Paramakash,’ there is no is or is not -it transcends everything."

"To establish oneself firmly in the awareness ‘ I am’, it is not necessary to think ‘ I am’, ‘I am’. Is it necessary to think you are sitting here? You know that you are sitting here. Whatever name and form there is belongs to that material and that material is not you. Do you analyze the problem and with the firm conviction decide that you are not the material? When the material disintegrates what does the name refer to? Does it have any significance? Only one in ten million goes to the crux of the matter, analyzes what it is, comes to a conclusion, and gets liberated, all by himself. The one who gets liberated is the consciousness, there is no entity."

Dennis Waite

“Since neo-advaitin teachers believe that any sort of practice is futile, it follows that they also claim that there is no need for, or value in, a guru. Nevertheless, they themselves continue to hold meetings and residential courses around the country, and many of those attending are habitual followers.”

“We need a guru to help us dispel the self-ignorance."

Finally, Dennis recently shared these observations made by another Advaitin:

"Advaita Vedanta is not a philosophy or a theory for discussion and entertainment. It is the living experience of the oneness of life. It is the perception and realization of the true Self. It is the fulfillment of the deepest craving in man. It is the conscious union of man with the essence of the whole universe. It is the realization that everything is the eternal Being, pure awareness and bliss.

"Vedanta is a way of living, not a field for intellectual argument and discussion. Vedanta is a powerful weapon to destroy the darkness of ignorance. Vedanta gives us the means to see beyond the phenomenon of sense perceptions.

"All people live in the oneness of life. But they do not realize it. They live like separate individuals, which are in constant conflict between their minds and their nature. It is completely different for someone to live in oneness as a separate individual full of miseries, than experiencing the oneness moment to moment with peace, love and harmony with everything."

Louise Sterling

“Consciousness is not continuous. It is unstable, ever changing, switching on and off like a lamp in the darkness. What is beyond? In what does this ever-changing consciousness or world of experiences appear? These are the questions that the earnest seeker must ask to separate what is Real from what is Unreal.”

“When You are emptied of EVERYTHING, You are identity-less – there is no longer any experience of separation; no sense of inner and outer; no sense of 'me in here' and 'world out there'.”

“Pointers to the Final Reality include these labels: formless, limitless, without attributes, no-concept, non-dual. Can you see then, that differentiating out 'special' and 'spiritual' names, labels, practices, relics, etc. BLOCKS Realization?”

“The Advaitan journey is not a linear pathway. Rather, it is a refining of understanding, a series of finer and finer filters, that remove the blockages and false identifications, until You are stabilized in Your Natural State.”

“When nothingness is directly known, it is intuitively recognized in the myriad of appearances as emptiness: the call of the geese, the blue mattress, the statue of the Buddha, the dog pooh on the lawn. These perceived 'objects' are not seen as different, but simply as different outer forms, arising from the same Unfathomable Emptiness.”

Floyd Henderson

"Here is why worldwide ignorance has not been stamped out and will not be stamped out: persons believe that the planet-wide epidemic of ignorance could be solved if only people would acquire more knowledge. The Advaitin understands that the knowledge is the ignorance and that the ignorance is the knowledge."

"The ignorance is that which the masses have been taught and have learned, and their ignorance will only be compounded if more of the same type of knowledge is injected into the equation. Ignorance could be stamped out if persons were to forfeit their revered beliefs and ideas and concepts and dogma. Since that happens so rarely but is a prerequisite for Realization, only a few will ever Realize (that is, be freed from the effects of their multiple, personality disorders and be restored to sanity)."

"What persons call 'love' is the most magnificent experience of all; it is also the most horrendous experience of all. With such duality, how can that possibly be mistaken for Real Love which comes with an understanding of 'the fictional subject-object version of love' and an understanding of the reality of the unicity? As for feeling or emotion, if 'love' happens as a feeling, take the ride and watch the feelings rise and fall; if 'love' happens as an emotion—that is, if it is being 'experienced' by a person in an ego-state—prepare for war."

"If there is no 'do-er,' and if there is no identity that is real, then there is no 'lover' either. If there is no lover, then find WHO thinks she/he is experiencing anything."

"Persons desiring to know what True Love is might benefit more (relatively speaking, of course) if they were first able to understand what 'love' is not. Only then might they understand that '(True) Love is knowing that I am everything; wisdom is knowing that I am nothing.' Can you, from the position of understanding the Oneness and from the position of 'As If Living' that follows Full Realization, feel and share True Love? Not only can You, but You shall. In fact, once again, no choice will be involved. It will just happen...spontaneously and unequivocally."

"Ego is believing that there’s a vast multiplicity arranged in a hierarchy and that you are the pinnacle; humility is knowing that you’re nothing, no-thing; True Love is knowing that You, with a capital ‘Y,’ Are everything. (That said, understand that the discussion of ego, humility, love and even Love involves concepts to be understood during the manifestation. In the end - beyond all somethingness, beyond all no-somethingness, beyond all beingness, beyond all non-beingness, beyond all knowingness, and beyond all no-knowingness - the Nothingness awaits.)"

The Twice-Stolen Necklace Murders offers the non-duality message by way of a mystery-adventure novel, discussing the movement from pain to healing to awakening to peace.
From Dr. R.F. Maley, Ph.D, Professor Emeritus and former Head of the Department of Psychology, University of Houston: "Floyd Henderson's book, The Twice-Stolen Necklace Murders, is a fun read and an interesting mystery, but perhaps more importantly it serves as a vehicle for blending Eastern Philosophy and Native American Spirituality to make an intellectually challenging novel. The book's insights into both relationships and authoritarian conditioning of people in our society make it a must read, tracing the roots of narcissistic, sociopathic and psychopathic behaviors to the very core of the culture. This truly witty and politically-incorrect study of the aggressive nature of 'the American character' offers not only a diagnosis but also a treatment plan, making the book an excellent supplemental reading in courses such as psychology, anthropology, philosophy, sociology and counseling."
