Here, there is nothing that is believed, so there is no one here who wants you to believe anything, either. Here, the invitation is to be free of all that you have been programmed, conditioned, acculturated, and domesticated to believe so that you can be free, period.
F.:Most have heard the saying that "Neurotics build castles in the air; psychotics actually move into them; then psychiatrists collect the rent."
One definition of a neurosis is this: "a mental disorder that does not necessarily prevent persons from functioning but that does trigger high levels of anxiety and distress, resulting in behavior that is not socially acceptable."
Another definition is this: "a neurosis is a personality disturbance, or a mental and / or emotional disturbance, that cannot be attributed to an organic or neurological source."
In either case, the Advaitin teachings might address the neurosis and allow neurotics to become aware, awake, and conscious - free of disturbances and anxiety and distress - as long as there are no extenuating organic or neurological factors involved and as long as they have not reached the depths of psychosis where they are having hallucinations and extreme delusions.
The estimate is that most nations have only 5% or fewer among their populations who can be diagnosed as clinically insane at any given time; however, what the sages have known for thousands of years is that the masses are trapped in personality;
that personality generates disturbances; that personality co-exists with mental and emotional problems; and that personality drives fears and desires that contribute to mental and emotional problems.
If seekers have not disintegrated into a psychotic state, the Advaita teachings might lead to the freedom from disturbance and steady peace that many - but not all - seekers are seeking.
While the masses also suffer from delusions that result from programming and conditioning, they can follow the "path" to that which they seek if the delusions are not of such severity that they have reached psychotic proportions.
That said, 99%+ are suffering from grave and severe personality disorders which can drive their thoughts and words and deeds to levels that Maharaj said exhibited "stupidity, verging on insanity."
Even some of those verging on insanity might find that which they seek via Advaita; those who are borderline or beyond will not be likely to understand the teachings, nor will those trapped in such levels of ignorance that they do not have even the slightest clue about the scientific explanations that support the Advaita teachings.
For those trapped in personality and the always-accompanying personality disorders, some can still integrate and become psychically healthy; some disintegrate into a variety of neuroses. If that disintegration is not interrupted, then some will disintegrate further psychically and will become psychotic.
Last night in a conference about personality with a woman and her counselor in Australia, she came to see that she was out of touch with authenticity and the Authentic Self.
After a discussion of her personality test results that revealed the various personality types that have been driving her thoughts and words and deeds for decades - denying her any ability to consciously choose anything and leaving her driven by the subconscious agendas of several personas - she wisely asked,
"So how do I get free of these personalities? I mean, I see now that for years they were who I have thought I am, so how to be free of them after they are so entrenched? If I am not 'The Peacemaker' or 'The Helper-Rescuer' or 'The One Needing Security' or 'The Really Deserving Wife,' then what am I?"
At that point, I asked the counselor (who has completed a series of Advaita Sessions via Skype), "You are no longer any of the roles you had assumed, so what are you?" He said, "I am nothing." Of course, a quizzical look crossed the face of the woman, but no words were said as she was allowed to process that. And she did.
Then, the teaching was shared that Real Love is knowing that you are everything, understanding that you are at one with all, but True Wisdom is knowing that you are, as you just heard him say, nothing...no false roles, no imaginary personas, and none of the stage characters that have been played for decades.
By the time the hour had passed, she had not abandoned all of her false identities which she has dragged about for years, and she did not remain fixed in the awareness of nothingness; yet she did leave knowing what she did not know and ready to begin the "journey."
Can you relate to any of the above? Then it might be that the readiness for the Advaita teachings has manifested. Several opportunities for the pursuit follow. Best regards as you travel the "path," should you be "driven" to follow that "path," rather than remaining driven to do what a plethora of false personas would have you do.
