 WHY BE RID OF PERSONALITY?

The current postings are in response to the following:


FROM A SITE VISITOR: Like Raja, I’m new to Advaita--but never had any religious training. It is easy enough to know that I am more than a body but why do you say I should not have a personality? Thank you.

F.: Another reason that "non-dual teachers" suggest being free of personality is that personality identifications reinforce the illusion of doership, and doership reinforces the acceptance of even more false identities (the belief among the non-realized being, "What I do also defines who I am.").

As long as persons believe that they are defined by what they do, then they will not abandon their false identifications and be able to understand who / what they are not (which Maharaj said in the end is what is necessary, not trying to find out "Who or What I Truly Am").

Consider the life-long (relative) effects on children who have been set up by their childhood environment to play - as an example - the role of “The Helper” personality type. In their case, by the age of five or six, they have already been conditioned to believe that the unconditional love (which they desire but are not receiving) will come if only they become (Type Two) "helpers."

If they never realize, then those children will spend an entire relative existence playing that role, assuming that to be a true identity, and unconsciously doing all required to support that false identity. They will (dualistically) work to be not only a helper but a “good” helper or even a "great helper," and the warped consciousness will believe for life that what they do defines who they are.

They will also be driven by the hidden agenda of all Helper Types which is to get the love they did not receive early on. They will never get what they seek in the quantities they seek and their happiness will be dependent on others - on externals - rather than on what is within.

Does “helping” never happen among the realized? To the contrary, "relative helping" may happen, or not.

[Note that, in the first place, it's an act of the utmost arrogance and delusion that you or I or anyone could possibly know exactly what any specific individual needs.]

As for "helping," what does not happen among the realized is an assumption of a role such as “The Helper” which automatically and egotistically upgrades itself to “The Good Helper” or “The Great Helper” and who thereafter enters into co-dependent interactions for a lifetime with "needy types" and users types who take advantage of "Helpers" (who are predisposed to being used and taken advantage of).

The result of those assuming that identity is a lifetime over-dependency on "relationships (which in itself is totally a duality-based concept as well: "A" needs "B." "A" wants "B." "A" and "B" became one when they lit a unity candle and blew out - forever - the two candles which represented their independent, sufficient, autonomous, sovereign, inner-directed, liberated, unrestricted, absolute beingness).

Peace here came not by accumulating and gathering and finding more "stuff" and more concepts but by abandoning all that had been accumulated. That included when an end came to believing in “The Teacher” (and “The Great Teacher”) and both of those roles disappeared;

then, "teaching" (with the actual goal of allowing seekers to be un-taught and to un-learn rather than to accumulate more knowledge)  merely happened—or not. As a result, no attachment to outcome or to a persona happened any longer, and no emotional intoxication resulted whether teaching happened or did not happen.

Here, there is no do-er who is teaching. There is witnessing only, and that witnessing either observes teaching / un-learning / un-teaching as they happen or observes if those do not happen. (Now, the conclusion in each case is That seeker "got it" or  That seeker did not "get it," meaning, That seeker got rid of it all or That seeker did not get rid of it all. So it is.)

But consider the effects when every child is conditioned and programmed and domesticated and acculturated and indoctrinated and brainwashed to play the helper personality type or to assume one of the other eight basic personality types and to play that role and others for an entire relative existence.

The Helper Types will be convinced that, to be loved and accepted and happy, they must reform; or they must help; or they must perform; or they must accumulate vast knowledge; or they must be loyal to—and never question—authority; or they must control and boss; or they must try to keep the peace at any cost; or, once again above all else, they must be loved by all.

And all along, they will be convinced that they are choosing to do what they do or choosing the professions they're in or choosing the words they speak or choosing to do the things they do.

If one is being driven, then one has no ability to choose anything. For example, if one is being driven in a car, that person can be in the passenger seat, in the backseat or locked in the trunk / boot.

The one place in the car that a driven person cannot be is . . . behind the steering wheel; thus, one who is driven will have no ability at all regarding where the car goes, how fast or slow it goes, or whether it stays on the road or runs off into a ditch and is wrecked.

Hence, one's life will unfold in the same way: all who are driven will have no ability at all regarding how their life unfolds; whether they feel a constant need to go and do and zoom or, instead, are able to relax and take it easy; or whether their lives unfold sanely and safely or end up being a total wreck.

So, driven persons - driven by the hidden agendas of their programming and conditioning and their false personality identifications and the desires and fears which their personalities generate - will erroneously believe that they are choosing to think and speak and behave as they do.

It should be seen that, to the contrary of having an ability to choose, personality controls every thought, every word, and every action taken by non-realized persons, most of whom will never realize; therefore, they will be driven by their personalities - and by their personality’s hidden agendas - for a lifetime.

Next, personality is the prerequisite for personality disorders. (Much has been shared in earlier posts that can be referenced by visitors seeking more detail.) Research shows that approximately 1-5% of the population of “developed” countries are full-blown clinically insane but that 95-99% suffer serious personality disorders which generate varying degrees of neuroses and psychoses with varying degrees of insanity as well.

Is it now becoming clearer why "non-dual teachers" suggest to seekers that they begin the "journey" by casting aside the body as an identity, by rejecting the belief that the content of the “mind” can be the means by which truth and authenticity can be known, and by bringing to an end the fate of the non-realized to be dominated unconsciously and subconsciously by programming, conditioning, etc. and by personality agendas?

Is it clear why belief in personas must end if one would become able to differentiate the true from the false, the sane from the insane, and learned ignorance from wisdom?

THE EXPLANATION

If looked at as nouns, they point to illusions and are, therefore, a total waste of time to even discuss; if looked at as verbs which are resulting in certain sane but rare behaviors among humanity, then they are worthy of some attention during the relative existence.

Meaning? There are members of certain groups who say things such as "My concept of god in the past was of a weak god, an absentee god, A Santa Claus-type god, a mean, punishing, vindictive god, etc. Today, I am in close contact with a loving and caring god whom I worship and praise and glorify and give thanks to."

The reply to that usually goes like this: "If you are in contact with a god that wants to be worshipped and praised and glorified, then you're dealing with someone like yourself - a narcissist - and hanging out with narcissists will never bring an end to your narcissism (that narcissism evidenced by the fact that you think you are "godly").

Next, in the phrase 'loving and caring god,' any supposed god that truly had her or his act together would tell you that the totally irrelevant part of that phrase is 'god' and that the only part that is relevant is the "loving and caring" part.

"That is, a non-narcissistic their god / their goddess would say, "I care not an iota about being worshipped and praised and glorified by you or anyone else. How arrogant and insecure and needy would I have to be to want that? Forget the man-made, dreamed up noun 'god' and focus on the 'god as a verb' understanding and then go forth and let loving and caring be verbs - not adjectives - and let them generate the act of love and the act of caring and let those actions manifest through you." 

Yeshu'a (Jesus) and Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis were spot on:

"No one shall ever see 'the kingdom of heaven.' It is within"

and 

"Heaven and earth shall fade away."

--Yeshu'a (Jesus)

and 

"Heaven and hell are not geographic places

but are states of mind, nothing more than

concepts dreamed up by men."

--Pope John Paul II 

"There is no hell."

--Pope Francis, the current pope

in an interview with journalist Eugenio Scalfari,

a writer used by the Pope to issue off the record

teachings which become a part of the Papal Magisterium. 

[That said, would that the popes who have shown the courage to reject a core concept of their dogma - namely, "hell" - would find the additional courage required to question the very existence of their institution in light of the centuries-long cover-up of their history of raping children and in light of the mental and emotional and psychological scarring of billions of their members past and present.

And that need for courage also applies as questions need to be asked about why so many other sky cults are still being supported and allowed to continue to exist as well. When certain types of programming and conditioning have been shown to blind the masses, they should end. Will they? Not likely. Why?

Because what the masses think and say and do is most influenced by the international crime families which hold sway over the masses as criminals conduct their planet-wide operations. What are the major international crime families and which are the most influential and have the largest memberships?

The Mafia / La Cosa Nostra; the Catholic Church (with it 1.2 billion followers) whose Vatican Bank worked for decades with the Mafia while laundering mob earnings (for a 15% all-profit charge by the Bank); Protestant and Evangelical Churches (with over 1.2 billion followers) like the one I was raised in where the youth director molested and sexually assaulted young girls; big business which has long created environments in which people have been abused; powerful political bodies like the U.S. Congress, etc., etc., etc.)

With all of those crime families, neither the followers nor the leadership ever voluntarily step down or shut down their criminal activities. Be they gangs, organized crime families, religions, big business, politicians, etc., they all want control and they all want power and they all want money, and nothing internal will interfere with the driving forces at play.

The masses must demand that all those in charge must step down and their groups and institutions must shut down, and there's the real problem because the continuation of their crimes are enabled not as much by the people running such crime organizations as they are enabled by the masses of people who - wanting some perceived "payoff" - remain involved with them and give them money and support them and aid and abet the continued existence of those criminal enterprises and thus facilitate the ability of church criminals and political criminals and other types of criminals to continue to commit their crimes.]
