CAUSATION and RELATIVE EVENTS AND BEHAVIORS:
“Evil?” or “Ignorance, Stupidity, and Insanity”?
A REVIEW OF THE KEY POINTERS REGARDING THE DUALISTIC BELIEF IN “GOOD” VS. “EVIL”

To continue with where we left off yesterday while looking at the historical proof of the connection involving religion and the false concept of “good” vs. “evil” and the false beliefs about “cause”:
Here is a statement that you will never hear in a church, a synagogue, a temple, a mosque, or a cult meeting;
it is also a statement that you will never hear in a Twelve Step group, in an ashram, or in a spiritual book talk or seminar or retreat conducted by any of the Big Name Teachers and Traveling Snake Oil Sales people;
it is also a statement that you will never hear from a meeting of right-wing Christian nationalists and / or white supremacists and / or evangelicals and or anyone working in the Vatican.
The statement:
“Only that person will visit this place whose virtue and sin have come to an end.”

And most certainly it is a statement that would have never been heard in the NE parts of the U.S. after the Puritans came to the (U.S.) Colonies in 1630 and set up their theocratic rule.
What was heard? Ultra-right religious proclamations from John Winthrop and years later from such Puritan preachers as Jonathan Edwards who delivered his sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” throughout the region.
Like all Puritans, his sermon stressed the danger of damnation and God’s wrath and included a warning to every one of his audiences of the ever-present possibility that their sins would assure that they would most likely be sentenced to damnation and would spend eternity in the fires of hell.
He said, “The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you and is dreadfully provoked. His wrath toward you burns like fire; he looks upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be placed into the fire.
He added, “You are ten thousand times as abominable to his eyes as the most hateful, venomous serpent is to ours. You have offended him infinitely.”
The tenets of their belief system were that humans are the essence of total depravity; the best you can hope for is limited atonement; and God’s grace is attainable but you will likely never get it.
And those are the first persons on this continent to pass down their belief that life on earth is nothing more than a struggle between the forces of good and the forces of evil, even after that fight has been ongoing for near eternity.
(Interestingly, the everlasting fight between an all-powerful God and the devil named Satan remains at a standoff. Wait a minute. An all-powerful god cannot defeat, once and for all, Lucifer who was cast out of Heaven? Huumm. By the way, the word satan referred originally to “the enemy,” a reference to mankind’s pride. As for Beelzebub, that was originally the name given to “The God of Insects.”)
The Puritans’ descendants are alive and well today and are the key governing force is U.S. politics and religion. John Knowles wrote a novel analyzing the puritanical good vs. evil battle in the U.S. and noted that the puritanical types are ready to go to war and annihilate any citizens who display “a germ of wildness” (which has for nearly 400 years offended their puritanical self-image).
“Evil” is their go-to word for everyone who disagrees with them:
Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) recently called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “incredibly evil.”
Ronald Reagan (R) referred to Russia as “an evil empire.”
After mass shootings, the Right-wingers' talk of evil facilitates their goal: to end all discussion about gun control and the insanity of allowing 18 year olds to buy weapons of war – legally – which they can carry about on the streets of the U.S.
The Las Vegas massacre “was a pure act of evil,” said GOP Congressman David Young of Iowa.
Vanity Fair magazine noted other explanations given by the Right to identify the cause of the recent mass shooting in Texas:
“Too many doors in schools.
Not enough God.
A lack of “trip wires” and “mantraps.”
“This is just a small sampling of the things that conservatives have attempted to blame mass shootings on over the last few months, a list that, as of Wednesday evening, now includes “spiritual problems,” the solution to which is, according to one Fox News guest, “the need for more exorcisms.”
Republican Senator Ted Cruz: Rather than calling for legislative action, he resigned that “evil is sadly always present.”
“The existence of evil is one of the very best reasons to arm law-abiding citizens,” former President Donald Trump told an accepting audience at an annual National Rifle Association convention, held in Houston on the heels of nearly back-to-back grisly mass murderers.
The reactions from those seeing more clearly?
“Evil? Like, the Devil made this week’s mass murderer run out and buy military assault rifles and systematically execute a room full of children and teachers?”
and
“It’s increasingly difficult to discern who is more mentally unstable these days - the mass shooters or those who defend their rights to ‘legally bear arms’ until they become mass murderers or just shoot a few people they don’t like.”
After 400 years of Puritan influence, of course the concept of “evil” in the U.S. is a driving force and is the #1 “cause” of what dual-minded persons think is “bad.”
As far as “causation” is concerned in the U.S., the cause of all “good stuff” is “good people” and the cause of all “bad stuff” is the force of “evil,” that is, of satan, of Beelzebub, of the devil at work.
But somehow, the proponents of that belief cannot explain why their all-knowing, all-powerful, omnipresent God has not yet figured out a way to defeat satan / the devil / Beelzebub and eliminate evil. The best they can come up with is “God loves us enough to give us free will, and some people abuse that gift.” Ah.
