SIXTO RODRIGUEZ AND HOW THE UNBLOCKED, BOUNDLESS CONSCIOUSNESS SPEAKS AND IS SOMETIMES HEARD AROUND THE GLOBE BY OTHER SPECKS OF CONSCIOUSNESS, Part 1
Non-dual pointers can appear in the most unexpected places. Is it possible that this singer / songwriter might have some such pointers to share which could be relevant for your “journey”?
BACKGROUND (Wikipedia)
Sixto Diaz Rodriguez (likely “born” July 10, 1942), known professionally as “Rodriguez” and “Sugar Man,” is an American singer-songwriter from Detroit, Michigan. Though his career was initially met with little fanfare in the United States, he found success in South Africa, Australia (touring the country twice), and New Zealand.
Unbeknownst to him for decades, his music was extremely successful and influential in South Africa, where he is believed to have sold more records than Elvis as well as in other countries in southern Africa. Information about him was scarce, and it was incorrectly rumored there that he had committed suicide shortly after releasing his second album.
In the 1990s, determined South African fans managed to find and contact Rodriguez, which led to an unexpected revival of his musical career.
This was told in the 2012 Academy Award-winning documentary film “Searching for Sugar Man” and helped give Rodriguez a measure of fame in his home country. In May 2013, Rodriguez received an honorary Doctor of Human Letters degree from his alma mater, Wayne State University, in Detroit.
Today,
how the non-dual message of Sixto Rodriguez illustrates the way that, when the
pure consciousness speaks, it is sometimes heard globally by those seekers of
Truth that are capable of tuning in to the message.
To begin, this was shared in a 2006 posting on this site:
The pure consciousness manifested is, at its core, nothing more than the
vibrating energy that is Oneness-in-motion, that is the-unicity-in-motion.
That
Oneness, when manifested, allows for communication to happen at a cellular
level (not unlike archetypal messaging transferred via DNA) and allows for
universal communication or “transmitting” as consciousness speaks without
bounds and can be heard far away by
only-partially-blocked-specks-of-consciousness or by the consciousness that has
a temporary gap in the blockages that otherwise prevent the hearing and
assimilation of Truth.
How that happens is clear to the realized. post-realization, all so-called “mysteries”
dissolve. All of the false beliefs that natural events are not natural but are
supernatural instead come to an end because there is an end to the false belief
- rooted in magical thinking - that all happenings “here” are being
orchestrated by a supernatural power “there.”
Here is an example of how those functioning under the influence of authenticity
are drawn to the authentic, non-dual messages that are presented via the pure
consciousness, revealed through this recent bit of what some might call “serendipity”:
In the 1960’s, the consciousness spoke through “floyd” as he was actively
involved in protesting the war in Vietnam. An acquaintance, far more active in the
protests on a national level, usually played the protest music of Bob Dylan in
those days, but he also had connections to the Detroit music scene; thus, one
day he shared some lyrics being sung by a man that came to be known as “the
Latin (Mexican) Bob Dylan.”
The man - only five years older than we were at the time - was offering up such
lyrics as “The little man gets shafted / sons and monies drafted” and such
wisdom as “My story is not rags to riches. It’s rags to rags, and I’m glad
about that. Where other people live in an artificial world, I feel I live in ‘the
real world.’ And nothing beats Reality.”
Interestingly, many of his lyrics contained double entendres, comparing the
pain of a breakup or betrayal by an abusive (and usually very arrogant) lover
to the way that the masses were being abused and betrayed by a handful of
powerful people running the government in conjunction with big business. (If
interested, see Eisenhower’s 1961 speech that foretold the exact circumstance.)
While only a small audience in the U.S. ever heard of Rodriguez, something very
different happened in South Africa. Fast forward a decade to the 1970’s where
bootleg copies of his albums were hugely popular and he became what was
described recently as “a middle class phenomenon amongst the whites” by a
white, according to South African woman who was an anti-apartheid activist at the time. In
her early years, she would eventually leave her home in Durban to join in the
struggle in the larger cities, and she is known to regular visitors to this
site.
A few years back, South Africans found that their iconic “Rodriguez / Sugarman”
(contrary to the rumors that circulated there for years that he had died) was
still alive. The “search for Sugarman” began, he was located, and he has gained
some attention now in the U.S., South Africa, and around the globe.
Now, for the “serendipity” part of the story: in a recent exchange when I
mentioned Rodriguez in passing, she responded thusly:
“Fascinating regarding Rodriguez, as we [in South Africa] called him. Just
Goggled the story about the documentary. I had both his albums; we played them
endlessly during my school and varsity days. Every band and guitarist in Durban
(and I’m sure the rest of SA) did cover versions as part of their sets. He was
on every radio play list. His music was part of the fabric of life here. I
still love his music. I had always just assumed he was a household name in the
States.”
She mentioned listening to his music in the various clubs that she and her
friends visited in those days in Cape Town and said: “We would go home
afterwards to our student communes and listen to Rodriguez while we drank red
wine, talked, and tried to process what we were living through and experiencing
during those struggle years.”
Recently, she and her son listened to the albums again as she shared her early
involvement in The Movement and helped him understand more of the history of
his South African homeland.
So there was one in S.A. that valued authenticity from the beginning; there was
another is the South in the U.S. that valued authenticity from the beginning;
and there was one in Detroit, Michigan that valued authenticity from the
beginning and shared the understanding via his lyrics.
Then, all three, scattered about the globe though they were, became “connected”
by way of hearing the non-dual message contained in the lyrics of the man from
Michigan as the words that consciousness spoke flew about the globe on the
plane of pure consciousness that carried the pointers which the one in Detroit
wrote.
And those pointers include these non-duality-based messages and lyrics:
• “ . . . . Thanks for your time, then
you can thank me for mine, and after that’s said, forget it.” [Here, find the
understanding and then forget it - move on to natural abidance].
• “Crucify your mind” [which is a recurring suggestion on this site].
• “So con, convince your mirror / As you’ve always done before / Giving
substance to shadows / Giving substance ever more.”
• “And you assume you got something to offer / Secrets shiny and new / But how
much of you is repetition . . . . ?”
• “Politicians using people they’ve been abusing . . . . / The pope digs
population, freedom from taxation . . . .”
• “The generals hate holidays . . . . / Another store front church is open . .
. / Soldier tired and sailor broken . .
. .”
• “The priest is preaching from a shallow grave / He counts his money, then he
paints you saved . . . .”
• “ . . . . You live in the past of a
dream that you’re in / And your selfishness is your cardinal sin . . . . / And you want to be held with highest regard .
. . .”
• “So don’t try to impress me / You’re just pins and paint / And don’t try to
charm me / With things that you ain’t.”
• “And don’t try to enchant me with your manner of dress / ‘Cause a monkey in
silk is a monkey no less.”
• “In the factory that you call ‘your mind’ / Graveyard thoughts of stone / A
master thief, I wouldn’t enter there . . . .”
• “ . . . . I know you know you know no
truth . . . .”
• “ . . . . I never could digest / Those
illusions you claim to have going. / Coffin dust is the fate for everyone . . .
.”
And recently, when asked if he was angry or resentful upon discovering that he
never received a penny of the royalties that were due to him from the huge sales
that his albums enjoyed in other parts of the world, he said:
• “Hate is too strong an emotion to waste on someone you don’t even like.”
