FROM A SITE VISITOR: Do you think that the realized should be able to tolerate any kind of environment or any kind of people? It sounds like you are saying that. I’ve been reading your writings for several months and lately, there are people I spent a lot of time with before but now I’m not spending time with them at all. I’m not realized, but even if I were, I feel certain that there are some people I just wouldn’t want to be around. Art

F.: The discussion today continues by looking at the three case studies along with a mom enabling a son that is suffering from an addiction that has not been successfully treated. [See the post on 27 October 2007] All four, trapped in their dreams that blind them to reality, are enslaved as a result of having been lulled asleep by processes that produced a major warping of consciousness. They have not understood these Advaitin pointers previously offered:

1. That which gives you pleasure will eventually give you pain.
2. That which gives you the most pleasure will eventually give you the most pain.
3. All misery and suffering and entrapment flow from the assumption of ego-states that are driven by either fears or desires or both.
4. Persons have been programmed and conditioned just like Pavlovian dogs.
5. Programming and conditioning will leave them helpless, with no ability to choose anything.
6. That programming and conditioning will determine their every thought…which will determine their every word… which will drive their every action.
7. Being controlled by programming and conditioning can only result in unhappiness because it will drive persons to try to accumulate, will leave them in a state of constant longing for more, and will deprive them of any sense of feeling fulfilled. (In the U.S. alone, more than 10 million women are taking anti-depressants on any given day. Seventy-seven percent of the 300 million people in the nation report that they suffer so much stress that it is affecting them physically.)
8. Those persons who have been programmed and conditioned to want more have already laid the foundation of what will prove to be their own prison.

Of course, persons are merely following their programming to want more, and unless they transcend the accumulation stage and engage in Self-Inquiry, they will never reach the de-accumulation stage that is so freeing. All of the persons referenced in this series are imprisoned, and one force that has driven them into their prisons is a desire for more.

Yet these four are not rare exceptions on planet earth. Add to these the case study from the book CASTING LIGHT ON THE DARK SIDE OF RELATIONSHIPS which discusses a woman whose father told her, “You don’t need to go to college. You’re good looking. Just find a man to take care of you.” Her mother added, “If you manipulate a man with love, you’ll get everything you ever want.”

The non-Realized persons who walk the face of the globe are equally asleep, equally miserable, and equally enthralled with having more. Most of those six billion+ will remain in that condition for the remainder of the manifestation. Robert Crais wrote of those types in one of his novels. A character exits a building at sunrise and observes:

“Moths swarmed around the parking lot lamps, banging into the glass with a steady tap, tap, tap, and I wondered if they welcomed the dawn. At dawn, they could stop slamming their heads into the thing that forever kept them from the light. People don’t have a dawn. We just keep slamming away until it kills us.”

The “Repetition Compulsion” will prevent most from ever breaking the cycles of insanity (or of insane-like deeds or actions which are generated by personality disorders that mark the existence of those identified with body-mind-personality). Consider:

With Case “A,” husband #1 “took care of her,” but they eventually divorced after years of beatings. Husband #2 “took care of her,” but they eventually divorced after years of beatings. Husband #3 is “taking care of her,” but she wishes for him to die after years of beatings.

Yet, her lifestyle is “comfortable,” she claims, because she “doesn’t have to work…is able to shop all day…is able to do whatever she wants.” And that is truly her belief, though he is slamming her head and though she has been kept from the light. Such is the case among billions who are walking about asleep, dreaming they are awake and that they know truth. They will never even begin to see how distorted their thinking is…how warped their perspectives are…how nonsensical their beliefs are…or how every idea they have is 180-degrees in reverse of reality.

Just as with all persons (who are typically in denial and dissociated) Case “A” denies that she is suffering and miserable and depressed. She goes to men who will pay her bills; she runs from men who beat her; she goes back to the same type man because he’s willing to pay her bills; she runs away from that man who beats her. All of this nonsense about hanging around certain people or running away from certain people is typical of the chaos that marks the existence of the non-Realized. Such behavior shows that persons believe all problems are external and that all solutions are external.

As referenced in Art’s question, there are specific people Case "A" wanted to be around but now doesn’t want to be around; instead of moving toward independence and meeting her own relative existence needs, however, she continues to run to the same type of rescuing, caveman-type males who have always believed that whatever they find and bring home is theirs to own and do with as they please: “You’re bought and paid for, fair and square, so you’re mine.”

As a result, she is like Cases “B” and “C,” dreaming that they are free but imprisoned by their dependent, take-care-of-me, give-me-a-better-lifestyle mentalities.

Yet even as they claim they are “doing fine and are happy and joyous,” all three are in therapy, all three are (perfunctorily) involved in 12-step programs, and, as mentioned, all three have recently talked of suicide.

The Advaita Teachings can introduce persons to the dawn—to the beginning of the awakening process—and can reveal that such deeds as “slamming their heads into something” and being “forever kept from the light” can end. A shift happens automatically if one sees the light and spontaneously becomes free of self-destructive, self-absorbed living, as far as the relative existence goes.

Now, what of you? If you look at anyone and think you know him/her well, you do not. If you look at anyone and see anything other than (1) a space formed by a combining of elements and (2) a form in which the consciousness is temporarily manifested, then in no way do you know Who/What That Is which you think you are seeing (speaking in absolute terms) and in no way do you know who or what they are at all (speaking in relative terms).

Krishna spoke of “fools.” All foolishness happens because “they” fooled us first, but now most have taken up the task and continue to fool themselves by refusing to question the ideas and concepts and dogma and beliefs which have been programmed into their "minds." If that applies, know that you are in a position to effect change. The change happens when seven specific steps are taken in a very specific order.

That process can “change” the consciousness from its warped condition to a re-purified condition. More accurately, all that really happens is that the obstacles that are blocking the consciousness from seeing clearly will be removed. Then, freedom from thoughts can happen; fewer words will happen; and a shift in deeds will necessarily follow. Please enter the silence of contemplation. (Tomorrow: The Conclusion)

You mentioned love-hate in today’s post, but in satsanga you told us that the only two emotions that persons experience are love or fear. Que pasa? Ricardo

The list of 20 things that love is not continues from the previous postings:

    10. Is it possible that love is NOT the “repetition compulsion” that drives persons to recreate past relationship models with a hidden agenda of bringing about what you believe would be a more positive outcome? Suppose you’re a young woman now whose father during your youth could not express love. Are you seeking men with a fatherly-image who seem willing to love you unconditionally? Are you taking that to be “love” when you're really addressing a subconscious "need"? Is "love" needy? Are you from a broken home and are now driven subconsciously to try to form a family and to “get it right” this time? Are you assuming it is “love” that is driving that desire?

    11. Is it possible that love is NOT real if it drives self-destructive behavior or if it drives you to try to please at any cost…even the cost of never finding out who YOU truly Are as you subjugate yourself (Your True Self) to another person?

    12. Is it possible that love is NOT the purely physical response that automatically drives all species to propagate?

    13. Is it possible that love is NOT that which is a product of the many subconscious and unconscious factors that drive persons to try to treat with "love" the plethora of mental and emotional issues that need addressing?

    14. Is it possible that love is NOT that which drives you to expend so much of your energy in an effort to find something that will heal the wounds of your childhood trauma and/or your adulthood trauma?

    15. Is it possible that love is NOT that which drives persons to unite in order to "feel whole"? Are you aware that those drives are rooted in not knowing the unicity, in imagining that the duality of “separation” is "real," and in believing that the duality of "aloneness" or "apartness" are “real?” If you get in touch with The Great Reality, you will realize that the word "aloneness" is a corruption of the original term, "all-oneness.”

    16. Is it possible that love is NOT what it is taken to be by anyone involved in “self” (personas, false selves) nor by anyone who has not fully Realized, nor by anyone who has not come to know the unicity of all via True Self awareness?

    17. Is it possible that love is NOT what it is taken to be by persons who are unaware of the selflessness and Selflessness beyond this manifestation?

    18. Is it possible that love is NOT that which persons are driven to search for as a result of the desires, the perceived emotional needs, and the fears of their ego-states?

    19. Is it possible that love is NOT that which drives persons to try to find a partner to provide now what they wanted in childhood but did not get?

    20. Is it possible that "love" is NOT that which is supposed to meet regularly your physical desires and is NOT that which is supposed to provide for economic welfare?

In conclusion, these pointers regarding “love/Love,” most of which are offered on the Advaita Quote site, are repeated here for consideration:

“What persons call ‘love’ is the most magnificent experience of all; it is also the most horrendous experience of all. With such duality, how can that possibly be taken for the real? As for feeling or emotion, if love happens as a feeling, take the ride and watch the feelings rise and fall; if love happens as an emotion—that is, if it is being "experienced" by a person in an ego-state—prepare for war.”

Yet the following can be said of “True Love” as understood via the Pure Witness/True Self: “Can you, from the position of 'As If Living' that follows Full Realization, feel and share Unconditional Love? Not only can You, but You shall. In fact, once again, no choice will be involved. It will just happen...spontaneously and unequivocally.”

If there is no "do-er," and if there is no identity that is real, then there is no "lover" either. If there is no lover, then find WHO thinks she/he is experiencing anything.

Ego is believing that there’s a vast multiplicity arranged in a hierarchy and that you’re the pinnacle; humility is knowing that you’re nothing, no-thing; Love is knowing that You, with a capital ‘Y,’ Are everything. (That said, understand that ego, humility, and love are merely concepts, thorns that can be used to remove thorns.)

As is the case with the Truth, which can be known but not stated, ultimately the same applies to Love.

Please enter the silence of contemplation.

F.: As some have noted in their e-mails, this entire series has dealt with relative “issues.” The Advaita Teachings are presented in stages, and it is in the later stages where discussions with protégés turn the focus to the True Self, to the non-beingness, to The Absolute, and to that which deals with the Noumenon. In the early stages of the teaching, the phenomenal “issues” must be discussed. Why?

If a building is about to collapse because its foundation is warped, then why discuss the cracks in the upper stories? Similarly, it must first be understood that body-mind-personality identification is the warped foundation on which all relative misery is based. If seekers are not freed of identification with personality, and freed of the phenomenal effects of the accompanying disorders, then it is useless to discuss with them any aspects regarding the later steps of a seven-step “journey” to Realization.

While those persons who exhibit the traits and behaviors of the NPD, APD, and ASPD disorders (a) can be destructive while feeling no remorse, or (b) can kill and then walk about the streets as if a hero, or (c) can create families and then abandon them without a care, or (d) can be abusive while maintaining an image of being kind or (e) can begin needless wars and then preen and strut about for the cameras, it should be noted:

Those with such disorders were programmed and conditioned and acculturated in a way that completely separated them from awareness of the True Self and the unicity that They Are. Anyone so abusive was likely subjected to abuse. Relatedly, anyone willing to tolerate the abuse of those with NPD, APD, and ASPD was also likely abused and ended up with a narcissist or sociopath or addict because it “felt familiar.” (The abused—whether abused mentally, physically, emotionally or otherwise—generally have a greater-than-usual tolerance for discomfort or pain. They are especially prone to repetition compulsions…re-creating the same miserable but familiar scenarios...over and over.) It is not only the air, the elements, and the conscious energy that can cycle. In the relative existence, abuse cycles as well.

The objective witness can study either history or current events and see that the Advaita Teachings have been, and are, an indicated part of the “treatment” for that which mars the relative existence of persons (that is, of the non-Realized). In order to review the traits and behaviors of persons with NPD, APD, and ASPD, traits and behaviors that can often be eliminated via Full Realization, the list from yesterday continues:

    21. Realization eliminates the assumption of false roles which always generate dependency and co-dependency
    22. Realization eliminates egomania, megalomania, and a sense of entitlement
    23. Realization eliminates pomposity and strutting about as if on stage
    24. Realization eliminates the relative-existence-suffering that is generated by personality and personality disorders
    25. Realization eliminates the sense of separation that results when fixated in a state of religious and/or spiritual arrogance (the third of seven steps to Realization)
    26. When Realization eliminates that fixation, it also eliminates judging and separating from and even killing, all of which have, historically, resulted from assumption of those two ego-states
    27. Realization ends the needs for ego-states to use rationalization
    28. Realization ends the needs for ego-states to use escapism
    29. Realization ends the needs for ego-states to use repression
    30. Realization ends the needs for ego-states to use normalization
    31. Realization ends the needs for ego-states to use denial and minimizing
    32. Realization ends the needs for ego-states to use avoidance
    33. Realization ends the needs for ego-states to use self-delusion
    34. Realization ends the needs for ego-states to use approval seeking
    35. Realization ends the needs for ego-states to use idealization
    36. Realization ends the needs for ego-states to use magical thinking
    37. Realization ends the needs for ego-states to use dissociation
    38. Realization ends the needs for ego-states to avoid intimacy
    39. Realization ends the needs for ego-states to experience guilt and shame…

    …and finally,

    40. Realization (a) ends the need for the constant noise and babble that persons use in their efforts to drown out the clatter of their fictitious “minds” and (b) ends the desire for a captive audience that persons think they need as they speak regularly or "share" regularly [meaning, “as they create opportunites to be listened to regularly”] and (c) ends the need for going and doing and zooming in order to try to escape all of the nonsense of “issues” that are the bane of persons who take their phenomenal state to be real and who have no clue about the truth of their homogeneous existence as the Noumenon.

If persons reading this series can break through the barrier of ego and recognize “self,” then they might consider that there is a seven-step “path” to Realization and that at the end of that “journey to Reality,” all of that which is catalogued in the list of items 1-40 could be discarded. Undertaking that “journey” will only be appealing if (1) the burdensome weight of all that is being carried is recognized and if (2) replacing that weight with a lightness of being suddenly has some allure.

When personality is eliminated, then one is well on the way to the post-Realization, AS IF style of living that is free of all of the insane-like behavior and all of the nonsense of relative issues that are much ado about nothing but that are seemingly made into “something” by ego and by the personality disorders that dominate the relative existence of the non-Realized. Please enter into the silence of contemplation.
