WHEN THE EARLIEST DUALITIES PLAGUE THE RELATIVE EXISTENCE OF ADULT-AGED PERSONS, Part Two

F.: Yesterday, this pointer was offered:

By that point, belief in the five earliest dualities is in place. Eventually, those persons who were programmed and conditioned with dualistic teachings as children become obsessive adults, behaving compulsively in their efforts to do all required to always hear “Yes” and to never hear “No”; fanatical in their efforts to have all of their desires met while wanting to avoid all that they fear; and fixated in their efforts to accumulate all that they “want” and to avoid everything that they “don’t want.”

All of that dualistic programming generates a belief in personas as identities, so personality disorders inevitability follow. The billions of (non-Realized) persons on the planet seldom move beyond body identification—which is the most extreme degree of separation from Reality. It is also an identity that will guarantee the perpetuation of “The Child” ego-state (along with misery and suffering as well).

During a session last summer, one such person who was trapped in the body level of identification revealed that he had engaged in over 300 extramarital affairs during his marriage. Most involved pay-for-sex type arrangements but many involved women who thought he cared and that he was available...only to be rejected in short order.

His Addictive Personality Disorder revealed itself through drug use, alcohol abuse, and an addiction to sex and "love," but his most basic identity amounted to “I am my body.” Driving his conduct, however, was also a “mind” and multiple personas.

Therefore, the male sex drive, the effects of his nucleus accumbens, and the archetypal motivation for him to scatter seeds aside, far more was at play with that man’s conduct. Only a few questions were required to reveal "The Child" motives that were at play in his “play.”

He reported the following: after his father disappeared, he was rejected by his mother who gave him to his grandmother; a short time later, his grandmother rejected him and gave him over to the state. His childhood desire was to hear his mother say “Yes” instead of “No”; to hear his grandmother say “Yes” rather than “No”; to alleviate his fear of further rejection; and to get what he “wanted” and to avoid what he did “not want.”

As a child who was wanted by no one, he felt a sense of “loss.” His thought-life was one that said, “You are not good enough; you will never be good enough; therefore, you will never have enough…of anything.” Behind those kinds of beliefs, excess will always be assigned great value.

His desire was to be accepted by two women during his childhood years, but since he was not, he was driven during his adulthood years to hear as many women say “Yes” as possible; to hear as many women as possible say “You are good”; to have women fulfill his self-ish desires; to use women in his effort to negate his fear of being rejected by supposedly being “accepted” time and time again (as if paying someone for something could even remotely mean that they "accept you").

His rationalized claim that “I just really love women” was eventually shown to be nothing more than deception and self-deception. He was shown that he actually hated women and that the repetition compulsion was in full bloom and manifesting through his childish conduct. He was eventually shown that he was doing to as many women as possible what the first two women in his life had done to him: he “had” them, and then he rejected them.

His was a selfish mission of revenge on one hand and a self-centered mission of seeking the acceptance he never had as a child on the other hand. In the process, he had also rejected his wife, yet he was egotistical enough to be angry and delusional enough to think that his wife had rejected him. In his 30’s, his behavior was that of an early teen at best, driven by the dualistic beliefs of a five to seven-year old.

When dominated by the earliest childhood “memories,” childish behavior follows, no matter the age of the person involved. The result is that most persons never reject the “Child” persona and burden their relative existence with an effort to convince “self” and “others” that they are good. The result is a person totally self-absorbed, self-obsessed, and self-centered. Part of the treatment is to begin by rejecting the concepts of “self” and “others.”

Such narcissism as displayed by that male is typical among the non-Realized. Having no clue as to what the True Self is, they are driven by a collection of false selves to accumulate more…and more…and more. Further, that male really thought that he was “happy” and “free,” doing what he wanted and getting what he wanted and enjoying what he got.

He had no clue at all that when co-dependent, as he was, then there can be no independence. In the absence of independence, who that is not free could really be happy? The truly happy are relaxed. Being “relaxed” was the farthest thing from his condition.

So what about you? Are you relaxed, or are you on a mission? If you are not relaxed or if you are on a mission, find WHO is not relaxed. Find WHO is involved is relentless seeking.

Quests are exhausting. To know that You already Are That Which You seek can begin the process of being free of doingness and thereafter relaxing in the lightness of being. Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)

FROM A SITE VISITOR: Do you think that the realized should be able to tolerate any kind of environment or any kind of people? It sounds like you are saying that. I’ve been reading your writings for several months and lately, there are people I spent a lot of time with before but now I’m not spending time with them at all. I’m not realized, but even if I were, I feel certain that there are some people I just wouldn’t want to be around. Art

F.: The discussion today continues by looking at the three case studies along with a mom enabling a son that is suffering from an addiction that has not been successfully treated. [See the post on 27 October 2007] All four, trapped in their dreams that blind them to reality, are enslaved as a result of having been lulled asleep by processes that produced a major warping of consciousness. They have not understood these Advaitin pointers previously offered:

1. That which gives you pleasure will eventually give you pain.
2. That which gives you the most pleasure will eventually give you the most pain.
3. All misery and suffering and entrapment flow from the assumption of ego-states that are driven by either fears or desires or both.
4. Persons have been programmed and conditioned just like Pavlovian dogs.
5. Programming and conditioning will leave them helpless, with no ability to choose anything.
6. That programming and conditioning will determine their every thought…which will determine their every word… which will drive their every action.
7. Being controlled by programming and conditioning can only result in unhappiness because it will drive persons to try to accumulate, will leave them in a state of constant longing for more, and will deprive them of any sense of feeling fulfilled. (In the U.S. alone, more than 10 million women are taking anti-depressants on any given day. Seventy-seven percent of the 300 million people in the nation report that they suffer so much stress that it is affecting them physically.)
8. Those persons who have been programmed and conditioned to want more have already laid the foundation of what will prove to be their own prison.

Of course, persons are merely following their programming to want more, and unless they transcend the accumulation stage and engage in Self-Inquiry, they will never reach the de-accumulation stage that is so freeing. All of the persons referenced in this series are imprisoned, and one force that has driven them into their prisons is a desire for more.

Yet these four are not rare exceptions on planet earth. Add to these the case study from the book CASTING LIGHT ON THE DARK SIDE OF RELATIONSHIPS which discusses a woman whose father told her, “You don’t need to go to college. You’re good looking. Just find a man to take care of you.” Her mother added, “If you manipulate a man with love, you’ll get everything you ever want.”

The non-Realized persons who walk the face of the globe are equally asleep, equally miserable, and equally enthralled with having more. Most of those six billion+ will remain in that condition for the remainder of the manifestation. Robert Crais wrote of those types in one of his novels. A character exits a building at sunrise and observes:

“Moths swarmed around the parking lot lamps, banging into the glass with a steady tap, tap, tap, and I wondered if they welcomed the dawn. At dawn, they could stop slamming their heads into the thing that forever kept them from the light. People don’t have a dawn. We just keep slamming away until it kills us.”

The “Repetition Compulsion” will prevent most from ever breaking the cycles of insanity (or of insane-like deeds or actions which are generated by personality disorders that mark the existence of those identified with body-mind-personality). Consider:

With Case “A,” husband #1 “took care of her,” but they eventually divorced after years of beatings. Husband #2 “took care of her,” but they eventually divorced after years of beatings. Husband #3 is “taking care of her,” but she wishes for him to die after years of beatings.

Yet, her lifestyle is “comfortable,” she claims, because she “doesn’t have to work…is able to shop all day…is able to do whatever she wants.” And that is truly her belief, though he is slamming her head and though she has been kept from the light. Such is the case among billions who are walking about asleep, dreaming they are awake and that they know truth. They will never even begin to see how distorted their thinking is…how warped their perspectives are…how nonsensical their beliefs are…or how every idea they have is 180-degrees in reverse of reality.

Just as with all persons (who are typically in denial and dissociated) Case “A” denies that she is suffering and miserable and depressed. She goes to men who will pay her bills; she runs from men who beat her; she goes back to the same type man because he’s willing to pay her bills; she runs away from that man who beats her. All of this nonsense about hanging around certain people or running away from certain people is typical of the chaos that marks the existence of the non-Realized. Such behavior shows that persons believe all problems are external and that all solutions are external.

As referenced in Art’s question, there are specific people Case "A" wanted to be around but now doesn’t want to be around; instead of moving toward independence and meeting her own relative existence needs, however, she continues to run to the same type of rescuing, caveman-type males who have always believed that whatever they find and bring home is theirs to own and do with as they please: “You’re bought and paid for, fair and square, so you’re mine.”

As a result, she is like Cases “B” and “C,” dreaming that they are free but imprisoned by their dependent, take-care-of-me, give-me-a-better-lifestyle mentalities.

Yet even as they claim they are “doing fine and are happy and joyous,” all three are in therapy, all three are (perfunctorily) involved in 12-step programs, and, as mentioned, all three have recently talked of suicide.

The Advaita Teachings can introduce persons to the dawn—to the beginning of the awakening process—and can reveal that such deeds as “slamming their heads into something” and being “forever kept from the light” can end. A shift happens automatically if one sees the light and spontaneously becomes free of self-destructive, self-absorbed living, as far as the relative existence goes.

Now, what of you? If you look at anyone and think you know him/her well, you do not. If you look at anyone and see anything other than (1) a space formed by a combining of elements and (2) a form in which the consciousness is temporarily manifested, then in no way do you know Who/What That Is which you think you are seeing (speaking in absolute terms) and in no way do you know who or what they are at all (speaking in relative terms).

Krishna spoke of “fools.” All foolishness happens because “they” fooled us first, but now most have taken up the task and continue to fool themselves by refusing to question the ideas and concepts and dogma and beliefs which have been programmed into their "minds." If that applies, know that you are in a position to effect change. The change happens when seven specific steps are taken in a very specific order.

That process can “change” the consciousness from its warped condition to a re-purified condition. More accurately, all that really happens is that the obstacles that are blocking the consciousness from seeing clearly will be removed. Then, freedom from thoughts can happen; fewer words will happen; and a shift in deeds will necessarily follow. Please enter the silence of contemplation. (Tomorrow: The Conclusion)

From a site visitor: “OK--I ‘confess’--I’m ignoring one of your points since there is something I want, desire--I want to be able to deal with controlling people coming at me from the parent role like you dealt with the guy who did that to you. The key is??????

F.: This is all so very simple, no matter the level of the discussion (whether at “step one” of the “journey” or at “step seven” on the “path”). Realize that there is no “guy” to come at me and no “me” to deal with any mirage called a “guy.”

There is a warped speck of consciousness that is temporarily manifested in a body, that is driven by a fictional “mind,” that is also driven by one or more personalities and subconscious personas, and that also just happens to own a keyboard. Realize that and the scenario you described (of trying to deal with "people coming at you") will have to end, n’est-ce-pas? No one to deal with, and nothing to deal with. Finis.

From another site visitor: “Dearest Floyd, Hey, ‘you’ are back! What fun, what frustration you can take! ‘Seriously’ though, the speckness that is speaking is freeing this one from innumerable fears. These last posts discussing the ‘sweet void’ only offer freedom. I finally get the Sky metaphors so often discussed and can let the metaphors go. Ginny

F.: The freedom and independence can really be enjoyed when the light is cast upon those fears and they are seen as ropes, huh? Peace and Light.

Now, to continue with the discussion of the Child/Parent ego-states. Exactly what is the origin of those ego-states? As in all such cases, programming and conditioning and domestication and enculturation are at the root. Then, modeling plays a part, which is also a form of programming and conditioning.

Thus, “The Parent” results from internalizing all of those “recordings” that were being played by persons assuming a parenting role during a child’s early years. Those tapes are played for children, along with a command that the children not question the content of the tapes. They are forced to “have faith” in any sayings or teachings (and all else imposed upon the child) by any “authority figure.”

The content of those tapes, therefore, is taken to be “truth” and will be passed on, even if evidence to the contrary arises and it becomes known that the content is false. (For example, I asked a Methodist minister who knew that Christ was teaching the Advaita message, "So why don't you go into your pulpit next Sunday and tell them the truth?" His reply: "Because it would be my last sermon. They'd walk out and I'd lose my job.") Warped specks playing influential roles warp the other specks under their influence. The continuation of ignorance and foolishness and nonsense becomes assured.

But another recording is being made at the same time that “The Parent” tape is being heard. “The Child” is making a recording of its own, and on each track of that tape is an imprint of the effects of an emotional trauma, a lie, a distortion, a hurt, a slight, a pain, an excruciating pain, ad infinitum, as the child experiences the frustrations of domestication.

Those tapes recorded during childhood will be set up with a sound-activation switch and an auto-recognition switch. Whenever anything sounds like or looks like one of those early emotional hurts, slights, pains, or excruciating pains, then those "Child" tapes will activate, an adult-aged person will revert to the child state, and she/he will experience the exact same emotions that were originally felt as a child. Then, that adult-aged person will react from a place of emotional intoxication and will behave in a childish, immature fashion.

Have you seen adult-aged persons behaving like five-year-olds? If one looks objectively at the childhood domestication process, it will be seen how frustrating the process is. The residue of that frustration, when triggered, will mar the relative existence of persons, no matter their age. The replaying of those tapes will drive adult-aged persons to experience and re-experience time and again the same childish emotions of their earliest years and to then act accordingly.

SELF-Actualization is one means by which the effects of the residue can be diluted, but in many cases, far more is required. As noted on many occasions on this site, the Advaita Teachings are not a cure-all. Some 1-5% of most populations are clinically insane. 99% suffer personality disorders, and many of those disorders manifest at a level of severity that calls for professional treatment. Advaita cannot provide such treatment for the most severe cases.

Thus, two other visitors were angered by the responses to their e-mails that arrived during the retreat this past week. Both wrote e-mails with content that revealed they have disorders and dependencies that need to be treated professionally before they can ever hope to comprehend these Teachings fully.

They must see that “sects” can take on many forms and can be cloaked in many disguises. Often, some major de-programming is required to be free of the program, the programmers, and the programming that take hostage the mentally sick and emotionally sick people who come their way.

Too, both individuals, proud that they have been freed of certain dependencies, are now trapped in an entirely new set of dependencies (such as dependencies on groups or on individual persons or on conceptualized dieties or on “new and improved” personas that are being reinforced by their new dependencies).

The words of both writers reveal that they have “Child”-type dependencies, needing recognition and approval. Both also have “The Parent”-type dependencies that inspire membership in organizations that allow them to “parent” others. Both want to play the role of “The Helper” and “The Saver of Lives” and thereby receive the “love” that they desire but have never received.

Both were sent level-appropriate responses to that effect, and both wrote back from “The Parent” role to explain how wrong the response was—that it must have come from impure consciousness since it did not address their queries at the “Step Seven level” as they had anticipated; that the reply addressed relative issues and was not rooted solely in the perspective of the Noumenon; etc. (Some want to run before they have an ability to walk. So it is.)

For now, the considerations are: (1) Have you been freed of certain dependencies? (2) If so, what are your current, substitute dependencies? (3) Are you finding examples where “The Parent” is manifesting in your thoughts, words, or deeds? (4) Are you finding examples of “The Child” showing up in thought, word, or deed? Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)

    AN OVERVIEW
The order in which the books are to be read and how to get them at a package rate:

Consider the Meditation CD, the Meditation Guides, Bullshit, and Spiritual Sobriety to be a “Beginner’s Package,” providing a foundation from which persons can begin to consider realities that are beyond the beliefs which they accept unquestioningly as a result of their enculturation. Used as a group, the works encourage inquiry (which is at the core of the Advaita approach) where questioning has not occurred before. [See MAKE YOUR OWN PACKAGE below.]

Consider Peace of Mind, Liberation, What Happens When I Die? and The Essence of the Teachings to be a “Mid-Level Seekers” Package, each guiding seekers beyond the false identification with body and mind and personality and explaining the basic terminology that must be understood before moving to the advanced teachings. [See MAKE YOUR OWN PACKAGE below.]

Consider From the I to the Absolute, Consciousness/Awareness, and From the Absolute to the Nothingness to be an “Advanced Seekers” Package. From the I to the Absolute can serve as a guide for earnest and capable seekers, putting the teachings into an orderly context that reveals the exact steps that must be taken in an exact order to move through all of the degrees of separation from belief in the false “I” to Realization. Consciousness/Awareness offers the next level of understanding, explaining that which is beyond the beingness and how happiness can manifest each day via the understanding. Finally, From the Absolute to the Nothingness will allow earnest and capable seekers to understand the state that is even prior to beingness and non-beingness, even prior to the Absolute. The seeker who understands the content of this book will realize how it is that—from a state of non-existence or nothingness—everything in this universe (and all universes) came to be. F.: Via the recent posts, you have been given brief access into the machinations of three “minds” that are preoccupied with the relative and plagued by dualistic thinking and beliefs. What you have seen by looking into the darkness of those three “minds” (which have been blocked from the light of truth and awareness by enculturation and conditioning) is how the consciousness functions (or malfunctions) when it is warped and becomes attached to the phenomenal.

That contaminated, conditioned consciousness then becomes impure, adulterated, limited, unstable, shifting, and ambiguous. The Absolute, by contrast, is uncontaminated, unconditional, unconditioned, unqualified, pure, unadulterated, unlimited, and unambiguous.

By witnessing the movement of the corrupted consciousness, you have been given first-hand access to the narrow spaces between the synapses that have been cluttered with distortion and warping and contamination and duality. You have been given concrete examples of how confused and befuddled and perplexed persons are when trapped in duality. You have also seen that persons who are so very “sure” about so many things have no opportunity at all to Realize.

Quite to the contrary of “being sure,” the true “journey” to Realization begins when a person is finally not so "sure." Then, the "journey" continues with the questioning of all ideas and concepts and beliefs. Realization itself happens when the last thing that any person was “sure of” is abandoned and discarded completely. The result is (a) no “one”—no who—that could be “sure” and (b) no concepts that anyone could be “sure of.”

Also, note in the examples the way in which the “minds” generated thoughts that were so erratic and self-contradictory that some might conclude—after seeing all of those distortions and vascillations—that all three persons are suffering clinically-diagnosable insanity. (Actually, their distortions are rooted more in personality disorders.) Yet all three appear to other persons to be functioning very well in society, to be at peace, to really have it “together”; thus, they are admired by many for their “religious work” or “deep spirituality” or “fine service to our youth.” So much for appearance.

Those three cases do not involve persons who are locked away in a mental institution. They are all persons operating in institutions that are highly respected in the U.S. culture (specifically, a profit-making business, a school, and a church) but where is any real basis for that respect when their corrupt “minds” are racing with a madhouse rapidity and generating distorted views?

For their societies to assume that those three persons “really have it all together” shows how deficient persons are at distinguishing between appearance and reality. You, too, have likely said at some time, “He/She fooled me. I had no idea she/he was like that.” Most persons can maintain their public façade quite adequately, expecially in cultures where play-acting and “fronting” are deemed preferable to reality.

What you have been allowed to witness, via those three examples, is the racing consciousness in movement. It has also been demonstrated, via those three cases, that the longer dualisitic beliefs dominate persons, the faster the “mind” will race. You have seen the depth of disintegration to which the corrupted consciousness can sink as all three of those persons are plagued by the shiftings between what they deem “good” and what they deem “bad,” between what they “love” and what they later “hate.”

Now, the suggestion is this: You have just been given a glimpse inside the “minds” of persons who are trapped in personality and duality. Now, the invitation is for YOU to find the ego-states that are talking. Find examples of the instability of their dualistic thinking. Find the way that each gave religion a chance or used their religion and spirituality to justify their behavior. Find all of the unstable nonsense as revealed in their unbalanced psyches and their unsteady prattle.

Then, see that a “mind” trapped in duality exacts a heavy mental and emotional toll. Understand that dualistic thinking is a progressive illness. See that those same types of results await all who refuse to recognize the degree to which the consciousness has been warped. Then, the invitation is to cast aside ideas, emotional intoxication and beliefs and complete the seven-step “path” back to Reality. Please enter the silence of contemplation.

PERSONALITY DISORDERS VS. MENTAL ILLNESS: What the Advaita Teachings Can Address and What They Cannot, Part One

F.: The discussion of this topic is an ongoing one on the site. Why? The Advaita Teachings address personality problems and provide a means for being free of those problems. It will be shown again that there are conditions that appear to be rooted in mental illness but that are actually rooted in personality disorders. Evidence that those disorders can be effectively treated by the Teachings will be provided in tomorrow’s post with a recounting of the condition that “floyd” once suffered. Before continuing, though, two points are offered: (1) mental illnesses that are truly clinical in nature cannot be addressed by the Teachings and require treatment of the type provided by trained professionals; and (2) mental illness affects 1%-5% of the population whereas 95%-99% suffer from one or more personality disorders, to some degree.

    Yesterday’s post included this:

As this discussion of the relevance of the Teachings is underway, what may prove to be a prime example of relevance was presented yesterday on the Virginia Tech campus. When the details behind the shooting are revealed, it might be found that the shooter was not clinically insane. It might be found instead that the shooter was trapped in an ego-state that he thought was being hurt, interfered with, or threatened.

Another possibility is that a combination of mental and personality disorders was at play, along with the possibility of an impact from the side effects of certain medications. More may be revealed about that case, but it must be noted again that nothing has ever been offered on this site to discount the toll of mental illness. Furthermore, if there is any suspicion that a mental illness is at play, the advice is always to seek out a professional for help. (That was the message sent last week in a private e-mail response to one wondering how to help a friend experiencing serious delusions. The friend wondered if the Advaita Teaching might help. The severity of his friend’s behavior led to a recommendation to forget trying to use the Advaita Teachings and to contact those in his community’s social services network and find help from the professionally-trained.)

What is being offered is an invitation to broaden the national and international discussion by inviting persons to consider other possible “causes” for most of the misery and suffering and outrageous acts of violence that mark the human condition and to stop the misclassification of personality disorders as mental illnesses. Why? Because a misdiagnosis of any problem will guarantee a continuation of the problem and will assure that any treatment plan being tried will be ineffective. That lesson was learned early on from an uncle whose entire career was in the field of mental health. As an adolescent spending his summers with an uncle that worked as the Chief Administrator of the Texas State Mental Hospital in Rusk, time was spent with patients there (an act in the late 1950's and early 1960’s that could not take place nowadays).

Only a small area of the facility was required for the housing of violent patients. Most of those confined as a result of their mental illnesses were docile and gentle and, yes, loving. Helping out in the cafeteria, contact happened with many patients who would initiate conversations, and it would later be discussed with the uncle about how kind most of the mentally ill were. The uncle agreed, saying that most who were locked away in that facility had conducted themselves in a far more civil manner than did the masses that were free to roam the streets. He emphasized that most of the mentally ill in his facility had never behaved as violently as the majority of persons behave, trapped as they are in personality. When persons feel that one or more of their (false) identities are being threatened, those suffering from personality disorders (which are rooted in the adoption of false personas) will fight, attack and destroy as if for their lives.

So, in light of the happenings on the Virginia Tech campus on Monday, might the Advaita Teachings have any relevance? Certainly, the majority in the nation will dismiss anything other than mental illness as “the cause.” (The Advaitin knows right off that “one, single cause” for any happening is a myth.) Reports that the shooter was being treated for depression have surfaced, yet he was just 1 of 21,000,000 in the U.S. who was diagnosed with depression during the last twelve months. But there were not 21,000,000 shooters in the U.S. last year, so maybe other factors came to bear. One respected psychotherapist who has treated thousands of patients over the years and who has reviewed some of Cho’s history saw similarities with certain of her patients who were suffering paranoid schizophrenia. What several of those patients had in common was sexual molestation as a child, some abused by family members and many assaulted by priests. (It is known that in some of his writings, Cho raised the issue of pedophilia, discussed his anger with parents, and expressed his anger toward women.)

Further, shooters are common within the U.S. borders. A woman dies as the result of spousal abuse every 6 hours in the U.S. and a man dies as the result of spousal abuse every 8.64 hours in the U.S. And that statistic just takes into account “the married” and does not count those killed during breakups among “not married” parties. Yet more often than not, those are not murder statistics; those are not mental illness statistics; those are persona statistics.

So another factor to be raised in the national discussion, therefore, is the possibility of one or more personality disorders. Sometimes all that is required in order to believe that one has the right to decide who lives and who dies is to be suffering the personality disorder known as “the God Complex.” If you read the postings in late March and early April on this site, you read about the types of personality disorders that are most likely to appear with each of the nine personality types. Some of you noticed that among all nine of the enneagram personality types, the God Complex was listed for every one. (Of course, when ego-states appear, ego defense mechanisms follow, and when living in ego—as personas do—then the arrogance of a God Complex is common.)

The God Complex, along with the associated disorders of narcissism and egomania, can inspire lethal conduct. Consider the level of arrogance that is required for persons to believe the following: “I can decide who lives and dies”; “I am a loving being but I can also be a wrathful being”; “I tried to give warnings to this culture to change your ways…now you will pay the price for ignoring me”; “I will be made immortal with this act and will be obscured no more”; “I will go as far over the line as I must in order to make you hear me and pay attention to my words”; "I have been trying to speak out and tell you what is wrong, but you ignore my words and that makes me very angry"; “I, and my important words, will be remembered forever”; “when you ignore me, you will be punished and will feel my wrath”; “sometimes it's lonely being god, having everyone ignore you during times when the masses are so self-absorbed and not knowing how wonderful I am”; “the world needs reforming and I'm just the one to do it”; “when the world gets so far out of hand, a reign of terror is justified to bring down punishment on people and let them see that I mean business”; “I am the judge of what is ‘right vs. wrong,’ ‘moral vs. immoral,’ and what ‘proper punishment vs. proper reward’ is”; “I can create or sustain or destroy you—it is my option…it is my providence.” It has been witnessed that the more "godly" some people become, the more they behave just like their destructive Judaeo-Christian-Islamic god.
That level of arrogance inspired by the God Complex Personality Disorder is not unique to the Virginia Tech shooter. That is the level of arrogance that many are being exposed to on a daily basis with an arrogant spouse, an arrogant boss, an arrogant person cutting you off in traffic, an arrogant person behaving in an abusive way in a store, ad infinitum. Should the current discussion focus on a "madman" or should it focus on "a mad man" (or "a mad woman")?

Again, 95%-99% of the planet’s population is suffering from some personality disorder(s), and the disorder that is common to all nine enneagram types is the God Complex described above. So the shooter’s "mental" vs. "personality" condition notwithstanding, the question for those interested in the Advaita Teachings is this: is it possible that you are dealing with someone who is suffering from the God Complex? Is it possible that you are suffering from a God Complex? Ego-states generate egomania, and egomania generates much of the suffering and misery on the planet. With 1%-5% in need of the level of care that is provided by professionals in the mental healthcare industry, but with 95%-99% needing The Understanding that is provided by the Advaita Teachings via elimination of personality, what treatment plan is most indicated for the majority on this planet? Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)

F.: It has been shown that the “mind” supports the assumption of personality and that personality is at the root of most relative existence problems. It has been asked, “Doesn’t all this talk about the mind and personality and personality disorders deal with the relative, and isn’t the relative an illusion?” The answer: Of course; however, if one believes in mirages and continues to suffer from automobile accidents that result when the driver takes evasive action to dodge mirages that seem to appear in the road, then mirages have to be discussed. They also have to be understood by the person driving and swerving and suffering if that destructive behavior is to end. Thus, this discussion.

    FINAL SUMMARY

    · For millions of years, humans survived and functioned well enough with a small, primitive brain and with no mind.

    · Over the last four million years, human brain volume has increased from about 400 ml to about 1400 ml. Only recently during the evolutionary period did the brain develop the capacity to store memories and to retrieve memories, allowing for the formation of a “mind” which could store and retrieve information which could help avoid potentially-dangerous situations.

    · After languages developed, persons with personal agendas began programming and conditioning the minds of persons, and the corrupted “mind” began overriding the brain, motivating foolishness and/or dangerous conduct (such as the brain saying, “Alcohol poisoning is killing the body and making it feel ill” but the “mind” overruling the brain and saying, “It will be used anyway since it will make me feel better”; or the brain saying, “This dogma is self-contradictory nonsense” but the programmed “mind” saying, “I have to believe all of my religious and spiritual teachings or my body will be tortured with fire forever”).

    · When one has been programmed and conditioned, freedom does not exist since the power to choose does not exist.

    · Once persons began storing in their “minds” the memory of ideas and beliefs and concepts that are taught by persons with agendas, then memories became dualistic in their nature.

    · As human “minds”—and therefore human behavior—became more abnormal as a result of dualistic beliefs and concepts, children began forming personalities in an effort to adapt to abnormal family situations.

    · With its belief in personas, the “mind” became more corrupted and warped and personas were attached to as identities. Personality then began to generate a variety of personality disorders, and personality disorders now generate most of the insane-like thinking and behavior of humans.

    · Some claim, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste?” Nowadays, it would be far more accurate to say, “A mind is a terrible waste.” As Dennis Waite puts it, “The purpose of j~nAna yoga is to remove the obstacles to Truth.” The content of the “mind” has become the obstacle to seeing the Truth. Maharaj advised: “Go to zero concepts.”

    · Adults, unconciously driven by memories and programming and personality, behave more and more in childish and nonsensible ways.

    · Personality now generates the majority of the “problems of the planet” as personality disorders determine how persons emote and think and, therefore, determine how they behave.

    · Billions of persons are blindly and unquestioningly doing what their programmers would have them do.

    · The solution to "the problem of the planet" is Realization, including the discarding of all body-mind-personality identifications.

    · Anything offered by Advaitins can only have “applicability” during the relative manifestation.

    · Post-Realization, AS IF living can happen. When the ego dissolves via Realization, then happiness begins because fear and desires end.

    · Full Realization will result in complete freedom…even freedom from believing in power or free will or choice. Seeing clearly, it becomes understood that the “problems of the planet” are illusory and that there is no “you” that has any problems.

    · Only post-Realization can persons be free of the insane-like condition of not even knowing Who/What They Truly Are…and what they are not.

    · It is “the direct path approach to Realization” that is offered on this site. Following the direct path requires no worship, no practices, no sacrifices, no giving or taking, no adherence to rules or dogma, no daily or weekly meetings, no fund-raising, no special buildings or special clothes, no robes, no special haircuts, no physical posturing, no holy texts, and no accoutrements. (It is because of the “no holy texts” part of this path that some suggest “vedanta” is not even applicable.) Pointing to the Original Understanding, which is the same understanding attained via Realization, makes the approach vary from other methods. That said, there is no suggestion that any path is “superior” to any other.

    · The direct “path” that is being illuminated here allows a seeker to remove misperceptions via an objective investigation of all personally-held concepts; allows the continuation of the “journey” once it is understand that the highly-valued “mind” is to be devalued and discarded; and allows the seeker to advance along the way by removing the obstacles on the “path” (specifically, the psychological abnormalities) which support the erroneous belief in personas and which enable a childhood set of tools called “personality” to control the entire relative existence of adult-age persons across the face of the planet.

    · Moreover, the direct path as expounded here is the path to natural—rather than unnatural or supernatural—living. Rather than “setting a goal” to worship god(s) or to know the Self, the direct path allows an awareness of the no-self, the no Self, the no-Being, the non-beingness, and the no-concept, non-dual Reality.

    · If the content of the “mind” (which is a conglomeration of distortions and misinformation) is discarded, then the effects of personality can be discarded. If both the “mind” and the “personality” are discarded, then the remaining steps of the Seven-Step Journey to Reality can be completed and abidance as the Absolute can happen. Only then can freedom during the manifestation also happen. But it all begins with questioning and then discarding attachment to the illusions of the body-mind-personality triad. F.: To review the key pointers offered so far:

    · For millions of years, human or human-like beings functioned in a manner guided by the brain (not unlike the deer today).

    · The human brain began to expand in size and capability only recently (in evolutionary terms) and developed the capacity to store memories and to retrieve (natural) memories in order to recall information that could protect the body and perpetuate the survival of the species.

    · Pre-language memories did their natural job: they created a “mind” that contained information which led to constructive behavior and helped avoid potentially-dangerous situations.

    · After languages developed, persons with personal agendas began programming and conditioning the minds of persons in order to control them and influence opinion, beliefs, and conduct. Rather than storing natural information, the brain began storing unnatural teachings and magical teachings about supposedly "supernatural" beings and events. True freedom was lost because behavior came to be controlled by one's programmers and their teachings, even if they were not present. (If one is conditioned, then freedom is nothing more than a concept and certainly cannot be real if a person's actions and reactions are the unconscious result of programming and conditioning.)

    · Once persons began storing ideas and beliefs and concepts in their minds (instead of recording fact-based observations that could assist in natural living), then memories became dualistic in their nature: “Our tribe is good, but their tribe is bad,” and “We have the right to punish those whose memories contain information that differs from the concepts and beliefs in our memories.” The “mind” became a distorted conglomeration of corruptions and lies.

    · As human behavior became more deviant and abnormal as a result of dualistic beliefs and concepts, children began forming personalities in an effort to try to deal with abnormal family situations.

    · As more dualistic beliefs and concepts were stored in memory because humans were being exposed to more and more progamming and conditioning, a greater sense of separation from others and Self became more common as the “mind” became more corrupted and warped and as personas were attached to as an identities.

    · As more adjusting was required among children who were trying to adapt to more and more abnormal circumstances, more personalities were formed. Then, children attached to their personalities (that is, to that childish set of “tools” being used to cope with the abnormal).

    · As persons attached more and more to personality, which is rooted in childhood and in childishness, adults began to lose the ability to choose and instead fell under the influence and control of a childish personality. Childish ways were taken into adult-age situations. Adults, unconciously driven by memories and programming and personality, began to behave more and more in childish and nonsensible ways.

    · Human behavior which is typically inspired by aberrations of personality now generates the majority of the “problems of the planet” as personality disorders determine (unconsciously) how persons emote, how they think, and, therefore, what they do. Each of the basic personality types eventually began to generate a particular set of personality disorders which then generated suffering for each of those types and for all of those who must try to deal with them.

    · The result is this: billions of persons are walking about the planet, believing that they are choosing to do what they do when, in fact, they are sleepwalking...doing what their programmers would have them do; thus, all that they think and feel and do is determined by the emotional intoxication that they suffer as a result of unconsciously allowing a set of childish, childhood tools to guide them through adulthood. And all of that is based in illusion. Why? The past is an illusion. How can one possibly be free if everything being done, thought or felt in “the present” is a reaction to false perceptions formed in "the past"?

    · The solution to "the problem of the planet" is Realization, including the discarding of all body-mind-personality identifications.

The discussion will now focus on the specific personality disorders that are common to each of the nine basic types, beginning with Personality Type Ones who can exhibit a God Complex Disorder, the OCD Personality Disorder and the Depressive Personality Disorder. Again, those happen most often when Type One persons are stressed, when they are overly-pious or seeing themselves as being highly-spiritual, or when they receive money as a result of their role-playing.

Type Ones (and Type Sevens who disintegrate into Type Ones) can be prone to perfectionism, including the belief that they are perfect and that all others should be perfect, according to the Ones’ definition of “perfect.” The God Complex Disorder inspires persons to act arrogantly, as if they have been appointed by a god or sent on a mission by a god. In the extreme, they act as if they are god, deciding who should live, who should die, judging who is right and moral, or determining who is wrong and immoral (using criteria based in childhood programming). Their sense of being perfect supports duality as they feel separate from—and superior to—“others.” Note how duality is fostered by the assumption of personality.

The Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder drives persons to accept mortgages on homes that are larger than they can afford, drives addictive behavior, and inspires persons to rush into or out of relationships. Professional researchers claim that OCD is one of the top causes of lost income and relative existence problems. The Depressive Personality Disorder is another common result of this personality identification, and while 95% of the earth’s population suffer the defect to one degree or another, most are in denial and claim that they are "really happy" and "have a great life."

In fact, the Depressive Personality Disorder is marked by duality, so there are constant shifts between states of happiness and unhappiness, high esteem and low esteem, optimism and pessimism, acceptance and rejection, and all of the chaotic movements that mark the instability in the lives of persons trapped in personality and in each personality type’s companion disorders. Is it becoming clear that almost all of humankind's relative existence problems are related to body-mind-personality identification and the nonsense that such identification generates? Eventually, persona-playing will always lead persons to personality disorders, to believing that their images are real, and to believing that they know why they do what they do and believing they know who they are when, in fact, they do not have the slightest clue.

    [Continued from yesterday]

F.: Part of the solution to being free of the influence of personality is to understand why personality develops and to see how truly bizarre and perverted are its roots. Why did Maharaj teach that the relative problems of adulthood are rooted in the distortions of childhood? Genetic and body chemistry factors aside, personality develops primarily as children attempt to develop a strategy for coping with the circumstances that they face in their families of origin, circumstances that have become increasingly bizarre as the centuries have passed.

Those behavioral patterns developed during childhood (patterns which came about as a result of bizarre circumstances) then drive persons throughout the rest of their childhood and their adulthood as well, a fact which guarantees the continued cycling of lunacy and nonsense. Bizarre circumstances produce a bizarre personality which generates even more bizarre behavior and circumstances during adulthood. Subsequently, those adults will bear children and then another generation will face bizarre circumstances as a result of bizarre-thinking adults and the bizarre programming and conditioning and enculturation that they pass along. Such environments force another generation of children to develop defective personalities in an effort to cope with the defective circumstances presented by adults who are driven by defective minds and defective thoughts and defective personalities.

To understand that adults are being driven by the subconscious strategies of a child within makes clear why so much childish nonsense is being generated among adults. It explains why adults will childishly follow a leader as he guides them into the depths of hell-on-earth; it explains why adults will childishly and unquestioningly believe ...

Three factors cause persons to attach to their false identities, to be driven to fight to defend their false personality / personalities, to descend into the depths of what some professionals term “an unhealthy psyche,” and then to suffer the effects of personality disorders. Those three factors are (1) stress, (2) extreme piety or spirituality, and (3) the linking of money / income with a persona.
FROM A SITE VISITOR: your mind/memory series is interesting, but I don’t get the exact connection with the direct path you claim to offer.

    [Continued from yesterday]

F.: To clarify for the sake of the one who sent the above e-mail, consider: there’s a regular visitor to this site who had prostate cancer. If the passing of blood had not happened, he would have never known the problem so he would never have sought the solution. This series is identifying the root of the widespread problems of the planet in order that site visitors might (a) better understand the cause of their problems and also know that (b) the Advaita Teachings offer a solution.

While many would dismiss other persons as “insane” if they disagree with them, most behavior that appears to be insane is actually rooted in personality. So that is the problem. Then, knowing the problem, one might be willing to seek the solution, namely, Realization. For some, the direct path offered on this site or in the retreats being offered again will "work" for some persons; the traditional path might work for some seekers; and other, newer approaches might work for other seekers. The solution is found when the suitable "path" is followed to its end.

So, the problems of the planet are, for the most part, rooted in “personality conflict.” That is a term that is typically used to minimize the reasons that a "relationship" "failed," but the term can be used accurately in light of the statistics posted yesterday: while up to 5% of the planet’s population was shown by research to have mental illnesses, 99% have personality disorders. As evidence, one estimate is that 99% suffer from ...

I’ve been visiting your site off-and-on since the early days - you did a piece one time on the brain and mind and consciousness but I can’t find it in the search. [Continued from yesterday]

F.: So to differentiate between behavior that is driven by mental illness as opposed to that which is driven by programming and conditioning and enculturation, it must be understood that taking personas to be actual identities results in personality disorders which only look like insanity to the objective witness; nevertheless, personality disorders do block the cognitive functioning of the brain. Further, personality disorders block the natural and normal functioning of the brain and body far more often than do mental illnesses. The results of a study of global mental illness by the World Health Organization and Harvard Medical School, as reported in The Journal of the American Medical Association, reveal that from 1 to 5 percent of the populations of most of the countries surveyed had serious mental illness.

By contrast, estimates are that 99% of the earth’s population suffer from one or more personality disorders; thus, as Advaitin sages have taught for centuries, the relative existence problems of the planet are rooted in personality. Realization offers the opportunity to eliminate most of the problems of the planet since they are rooted in personality, not in mental illness. When diagnosable mental health problems reach a level of seriousness that is labeled “clinical,” then a mental illness exists and professional intervention and treatment are indicated. Advaita cannot treat such conditions; however, those mental illnesses are very different from personality disorders, and personality disorders can be addressed and eliminated via the understanding that is attainable by way of the Advaita teachings. Psychiatrists and psychotherapists attempt to treat mental illnesses. Realization offers the treatment for personality disorders.

Since personality disorders are far more common on planet earth than are mental illnesses, then a logical approach would involve this: when insane-type behavior is being observed, look first to determine if ...

    [Continued from yesterday]

F.: “Mind” and “personality” cannot be separated since the former generates belief in the latter. The latter, in turn, generates all emotional intoxication. [Search the site for “feelings” vs. “emotions.” The short version is, while the Realized can witness feelings rise and fall, only ego-states—only assumed personas—emote. When personas believe that they are experiencing some slight, hurt, threat or interference, a series of actions and reactions are inspired that trigger emotional intoxication as well as destructive and/or self-destructive behavior.] When persons are trapped in the agendas of their false roles, then emotions will always overwhelm cognitive functioning, so now a new pointer is available:

It has been seen that the “mind” can override the constructive functioning of the brain; now it is seen that persona-generated emotionalism can also subdue the manner in which nature had originally intended that the brain should function. Now the degree of wisdom behind the Advaitin pointer that one must relinquish identification with the “mind” and the personality as well as with the body becomes clear. Review the evolution of the brain in regards to this latest understanding:

Humanity functioned with a mind-less brain for thousands of years. The brain evolved, developing an area for storing memories and an organ that could retrieve memories. Those two areas of the brain were intended to help humanity survive and to behave constructively. No personas were taken to be identities.

As language developed, information being stored in the brain was less and less of the character of things observed and became filled more and more with the remembering of things told. To observe a friend who touched a burning log, to see his pain, to file away that memory, and to recall that memory when next in the presence of a burning log produced behavior that would be considered “sane.” To the contrary, to observe crops dying as a result of the lack of rain, and then to be told that the rain is being withheld by an angry god who wants a priest to fornicate with a virgin and who wants the priest to cut out her beating heart with a sharp-edged rock and pass it through the crowd during a commune-with-god service produced behavior that would be considered “insane.”

The result of thousands of years of being conditioned to believe in whatever one is told rather than witnessing objectively and believing in that which is observable and provable has resulted in a planet that is populated with masses of ...
