FROM A SITE VISITOR: Do you think that the realized should be able to tolerate any kind of environment or any kind of people? It sounds like you are saying that. I’ve been reading your writings for several months and lately, there are people I spent a lot of time with before but now I’m not spending time with them at all. I’m not realized, but even if I were, I feel certain that there are some people I just wouldn’t want to be around. Art

F.: The non-Realized are living a nightmare but dreaming that their dreams are “sweet dreams.” They are in prison but are dreaming that they are free. That is evidenced in the three case studies in this series.

All three want to accumulate. All could provide for themselves, but (a) wanting more than they could earn and (b) desiring a richer lifestyle than their talents could provide and (c) believing that they are “different from others” and therefore (d) deserving to have someone else pay all of their bills, they have accepted the imprisonment that comes along with the supposed “perks.”

These cases are not rare but are, as the psychotherapist from yesterday’s post pointed out, becoming very common. (They are actually as old as the oldest “human relationships.”) Another case in point:

A woman following this series wrote yesterday to ask what she can do to escape from a situation that is another example related to the content of these current postings. Both she and her son have sought peace for years, have sought relief from the Addictive Personality Disorder, and have tried the Advaita approach as well. Neither has moved far along the “path.”

Her unemployed son, who will be thirty in a few years, comes home drunk at night and rages against her. Other details provided allowed the following response:

“There is no need for any talk about Realization at this point. Deal with the relative aspects since the Absolute is not understood by either of you. Nobody can refuse to get a job, get drunk, have a house to come home to, and be allowed to rage without an enabler who makes it possible to avoid employment, to still get drunk, to still have a place to come home to, and to still have someone to rage against.

”Details that have been provided show that your mom enabled you and now you are passing it on to your son. You’ve mentioned your therapist. Discuss a plan to stop your enabling. You might be able to break the chain. No one quits abusing whatever they are abusing unless they hit a bottom and suffer the consequences, but an enabler always prevents the addict from finding the bottom or experiencing consequences.”

In this case, a deadline for moving out must be established. Art said, I feel certain that there are some people I just wouldn’t want to be around. In this case, it could be said by the mother, “There is a person I don’t want to be around while he is this sick and spreading his contagion. If he seeks treatment and wellness results, then I will reconsider.”

To give up the assumed ego-state of “The Enabler” and “The Rescuer” always seems painful to the non-Realized, but as with all ego-states and false identities, discarding them involves far less misery and suffering than maintaining them. Sometimes, at least a temporary movement away from certain people is indicated. It might eventually prove to be a step toward peace and sanity.

The woman playing the role of “The Enabler” is seeking relief via the Realization process, but here are a few facts about the process: (1) The readiness is all. If the readiness is not there, no chance of being in touch with reality will happen. (2) The ignorant can never Realize, and the intoxicated are ignorant. (3) A clouded “mind” cannot possibly understand any pointers that are aimed toward elimination of the “mind.” (4) Many other steps must be completed before the “Seven Steps to Realization” can be taken.

This case, along with the three already discussed, reinforces a pointer often offered here: the non-Realized walk about as if they are free, but they are not. They are imprisoned. For example, consider the parallels with Case “C” [25 October 2007]. Look at the parallels between his current imprisonment and his former imprisonment and see that he is no freer now than when he was incarcerated by the state:

In prison, he lived in a place without ownership, staying or going at the whims of whoever was in charge of him at the time. Same now. He could only have a minimal amount of money in his account. Same now. He was treated like a child by persons playing “The Parent” role in his life who told him when to go and where to go and how to go. Same now. He had to adopt many personas and walk about as if he were something that he was not in order to protect “self.” Same now.

As with all non-Realized persons, he remains incarcerated but believes he is free. He believes that this time he is “in love with” the one assuming the role of his guard and warden and mother. He thinks he is living the life of an adult, in grand style in her mansion, but he is actually still living as a child.

In fact, none of these persons are what they seem or what they take themselves to be. Furthermore, in spite of whatever their mates or partners or relatives think that they know about them…in no way are they the way they seem. And whatever they think their circumstances are, in no way are things the way they perceive them.

And for those embroiled in the relative existence, the same applies. If you have a spouse, you think you know your spouse and what that mate feels and thinks and believes. You do not. And there are thoughts and feelings and beliefs and desires and fears that you have that your spouse hasn’t a clue about. Only if You know That Which You Are can any truth about a spouse, or anyone else, be known.

Witness that type of delusion as it plays out among the case studies in this series. With Case “A,” she thinks that her occasional professions of love to her husband are real though she admits privately that she wants him to die. While she is wishing he would die, he is believing that she loves him.
This is the third husband who has paid all her bills and the third husband that she has wished dead. She is incarcerated but claims that she is “comfortable” in her prison. In the past, she had twice claimed that she was also comfortable in the other two prisons that she had moved into in order to avoid employment and to have others pay for her housing and clothing and all necessities. Rather than seeing that she is the common element in all three of those disasterous marriages, she concludes that all men are abusers and that all men are worthless except for paying bills.

Another, Case “B,” has thought that each man she dated was going to be the one to “take care of her,” but none of them proved in the end to be what they seemed during the dating process. They came; they saw; they conquered; they left. Yet she is still “in the hunt,” still seeking the “right man”…still seeking the one who will be willing to take care of her.

She is unknowingly begging to be locked away in the same kind of existence as “A,” as “C,” and as the enabling mother. All are willing to be prisoners of their dreams in order to sustain their bogus images and their false identities. All are prisoners of the desires and fears that are driving them throughout their relative circumstances.

When Advaitins speak of the imprisonment and misery and suffering that accompany the assumption and maintenance of ego-states, the talk is not metaphorical for those embroiled in their relative, phenomenal misery. Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)

F.: Desires are alway obstacles to peace and can cause persons to fixate in “The Parent” or “The Child” roles, or both. “Parent”-types desire power and control, and “The Child”-types are frustrated because they have no power or control but desire both.

Thus, it can be seen again that the master addiction among humans is the desire to control. The secondary addiction is the desire to have power (worldly and supernatural) in order to control.

In their efforts to control, “Parent”-types will exert all necessary force in order to try to control. Examples include the domineering spouse or mate; the abusive, controlling boss; and the politician who orders the dropping of bombs on those who do not behave as he prefers.

The desire to have power and the desire to control trap adult-aged persons in “The Parent” ego-state. Dependencies trap adult-aged persons in “The Child” ego-state.

Many adult-aged persons accept being treated like children by those playing “The Parent.” What cultural institutions encourage tolerance for such treatment? Organized religion (with its “He’s the Father and you’re the child” teachings) will certainly foster dependence and childish thinking, speaking, and behaving.

Many groups use an arm-chair version of psychology that encourages new members to substitute what they were dependent on with a new dependency on what the current members are now dependent on. Afterwards, the older members “Parent” the newer ones, dictating exactly what those in "The Child" role can and cannot do. In fact, almost all institutions and groups and businesses and relationships operate within a hierarchical structure that encourages parent and child role-playing.

Why does the assumption of these two roles guarantee conflict? “The Parent” and “The Child” both want power and control; however, since all non-Realized persons are being driven by “Parent” and “Child” influences, conflict is the unavoidable outcome. Persons trapped in these two ego-states will be in a constant battle as they all work to gain power and then try to use it to control people and events.

At the recent retreat, one adult-aged male who had been abused by Christians for a thirteen-year period during his childhood is now trapped in a desire to change all Christians. All of the adult-aged years of his relative existence have been marked by conflict that is driven by his desire to reform “them.”

He was shown that “The Parent” wants to be able to control them and change their thoughts and words and actions. Simultaneously, “The Child” role he is playing wants to argue and fight to that end.

Nothing shook his resolve until he was asked if he was familiar with Pavlov’s experiment involving the conditioning of dogs. He was. Asked if he would try to draw a few parallels, he agreed to try. The exchange went as follows:

F.: Were Pavlov’s dogs conditioned to believe that meat was forthcoming?
    Participant: Yes.
F.: Were the Christians who abused you conditioned to believe what they believe?
    P.: Yes.
F.: Do you think their behavior was insane?
    P.: Damn straight.
F.: Would you like to change them?
    P.: You bet.
F.: Do you think you can?
P.: Maybe. Maybe at least a few of them.
F.: So you’re likely to continue to confront them and try to “shake some sense into them”?
    P.: Probably.
F.: So you are basically saying that it is your belief that you could approach Pavlov’s dogs after they had been subjected to conditioning; that you could grab them by their ears and look them in their eyes and start shaking them; and that you could then change their “minds” by fighting with them as you yell, “Stop with all the damn salivating! That’s the sound of a bell that’s driving you, not the smell of meat! How stupid can you dogs be?! How insane can you be?!” Now, in that scenario, which one—you or the dogs—would be behaving more insanely?
    [Silence...then…]
    P.: Whoa.

The task of de-programming or de-conditioning is a formidable one. That is why Maharaj said that only 1 in 100,000 will ever Realize; that is why he later revised his estimate to 1 in 1,000,000; and that is why he ultimately predicted that only 1 in 10,000,000 will be freed from the effects of their programming and conditioning and thereafter awaken to the truth.

Most persons on the planet will be driven for the entirety of their relative existence as blindly and ignorantly as a Pavlovian dog. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that the median age in the U.S. is 35.3 years. Physically? Maybe so. Developmentally? 6-12 years old would be more realistic, considering the frequency with which “The Child” controls thoughts, words, and deeds.

Once one sees the degree to which programming and conditioning can dominant the thoughts, words, and actions of the non-Realized, it should be clear why no widespread, wholesale change among persons can happen; therefore, billions on the planet will continue to operate from “The Parent” ego-state and “The Child” ego-state. So it is.

But what about you? Are you awakening to the fact that much of what you have thought and said in your life was a mere replaying of parental tapes? Are you aware that most of what you have felt in your life was a mere replaying of childish/childhood tapes? Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)

    AN OVERVIEW:
The order in which the books are to be read and how to get them at a package rate:
Consider the Meditation CD, the Meditation Guides, Bullshit, and Spiritual Sobriety to be a “Beginner’s Package,” providing a foundation from which persons can begin to consider realities that are beyond the beliefs which they accept unquestioningly as a result of their enculturation. Used as a group, the works encourage inquiry (which is at the core of the Advaita approach) where questioning has not occurred before. [See MAKE YOUR OWN PACKAGE below.]

Consider Peace of Mind, Liberation, What Happens When I Die? and The Essence of the Teachings to be a “Mid-Level Seekers” Package, each guiding seekers beyond the false identification with body and mind and personality and explaining the basic terminology that must be understood before moving to the advanced teachings. [See MAKE YOUR OWN PACKAGE below.]

Consider From the I to the Absolute, Consciousness/Awareness, and From the Absolute to the Nothingness to be an “Advanced Seekers” Package. From the I to the Absolute can serve as a guide for earnest and capable seekers, putting the teachings into an orderly context that reveals the exact steps that must be taken in an exact order to move through all of the degrees of separation from belief in the false “I” to Realization. Consciousness/Awareness offers the next level of understanding, explaining that which is beyond the beingness and how happiness can manifest each day via the understanding. Finally, From the Absolute to the Nothingness will allow earnest and capable seekers to understand the state that is even prior to beingness and non-beingness, even prior to the Absolute. The seeker who understands the content of this book will realize how it is that—from a state of non-existence or nothingness—everything in this universe (and all universes) came to be. From a site visitor: “OK--I ‘confess’--I’m ignoring one of your points since there is something I want, desire--I want to be able to deal with controlling people coming at me from the parent role like you dealt with the guy who did that to you. The key is??????

F.: This is all so very simple, no matter the level of the discussion (whether at “step one” of the “journey” or at “step seven” on the “path”). Realize that there is no “guy” to come at me and no “me” to deal with any mirage called a “guy.”

There is a warped speck of consciousness that is temporarily manifested in a body, that is driven by a fictional “mind,” that is also driven by one or more personalities and subconscious personas, and that also just happens to own a keyboard. Realize that and the scenario you described (of trying to deal with "people coming at you") will have to end, n’est-ce-pas? No one to deal with, and nothing to deal with. Finis.

From another site visitor: “Dearest Floyd, Hey, ‘you’ are back! What fun, what frustration you can take! ‘Seriously’ though, the speckness that is speaking is freeing this one from innumerable fears. These last posts discussing the ‘sweet void’ only offer freedom. I finally get the Sky metaphors so often discussed and can let the metaphors go. Ginny

F.: The freedom and independence can really be enjoyed when the light is cast upon those fears and they are seen as ropes, huh? Peace and Light.

Now, to continue with the discussion of the Child/Parent ego-states. Exactly what is the origin of those ego-states? As in all such cases, programming and conditioning and domestication and enculturation are at the root. Then, modeling plays a part, which is also a form of programming and conditioning.

Thus, “The Parent” results from internalizing all of those “recordings” that were being played by persons assuming a parenting role during a child’s early years. Those tapes are played for children, along with a command that the children not question the content of the tapes. They are forced to “have faith” in any sayings or teachings (and all else imposed upon the child) by any “authority figure.”

The content of those tapes, therefore, is taken to be “truth” and will be passed on, even if evidence to the contrary arises and it becomes known that the content is false. (For example, I asked a Methodist minister who knew that Christ was teaching the Advaita message, "So why don't you go into your pulpit next Sunday and tell them the truth?" His reply: "Because it would be my last sermon. They'd walk out and I'd lose my job.") Warped specks playing influential roles warp the other specks under their influence. The continuation of ignorance and foolishness and nonsense becomes assured.

But another recording is being made at the same time that “The Parent” tape is being heard. “The Child” is making a recording of its own, and on each track of that tape is an imprint of the effects of an emotional trauma, a lie, a distortion, a hurt, a slight, a pain, an excruciating pain, ad infinitum, as the child experiences the frustrations of domestication.

Those tapes recorded during childhood will be set up with a sound-activation switch and an auto-recognition switch. Whenever anything sounds like or looks like one of those early emotional hurts, slights, pains, or excruciating pains, then those "Child" tapes will activate, an adult-aged person will revert to the child state, and she/he will experience the exact same emotions that were originally felt as a child. Then, that adult-aged person will react from a place of emotional intoxication and will behave in a childish, immature fashion.

Have you seen adult-aged persons behaving like five-year-olds? If one looks objectively at the childhood domestication process, it will be seen how frustrating the process is. The residue of that frustration, when triggered, will mar the relative existence of persons, no matter their age. The replaying of those tapes will drive adult-aged persons to experience and re-experience time and again the same childish emotions of their earliest years and to then act accordingly.

SELF-Actualization is one means by which the effects of the residue can be diluted, but in many cases, far more is required. As noted on many occasions on this site, the Advaita Teachings are not a cure-all. Some 1-5% of most populations are clinically insane. 99% suffer personality disorders, and many of those disorders manifest at a level of severity that calls for professional treatment. Advaita cannot provide such treatment for the most severe cases.

Thus, two other visitors were angered by the responses to their e-mails that arrived during the retreat this past week. Both wrote e-mails with content that revealed they have disorders and dependencies that need to be treated professionally before they can ever hope to comprehend these Teachings fully.

They must see that “sects” can take on many forms and can be cloaked in many disguises. Often, some major de-programming is required to be free of the program, the programmers, and the programming that take hostage the mentally sick and emotionally sick people who come their way.

Too, both individuals, proud that they have been freed of certain dependencies, are now trapped in an entirely new set of dependencies (such as dependencies on groups or on individual persons or on conceptualized dieties or on “new and improved” personas that are being reinforced by their new dependencies).

The words of both writers reveal that they have “Child”-type dependencies, needing recognition and approval. Both also have “The Parent”-type dependencies that inspire membership in organizations that allow them to “parent” others. Both want to play the role of “The Helper” and “The Saver of Lives” and thereby receive the “love” that they desire but have never received.

Both were sent level-appropriate responses to that effect, and both wrote back from “The Parent” role to explain how wrong the response was—that it must have come from impure consciousness since it did not address their queries at the “Step Seven level” as they had anticipated; that the reply addressed relative issues and was not rooted solely in the perspective of the Noumenon; etc. (Some want to run before they have an ability to walk. So it is.)

For now, the considerations are: (1) Have you been freed of certain dependencies? (2) If so, what are your current, substitute dependencies? (3) Are you finding examples where “The Parent” is manifesting in your thoughts, words, or deeds? (4) Are you finding examples of “The Child” showing up in thought, word, or deed? Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)
