An Advaita Vedanta realization, enlightenment, nisarga yoga site discussing non-duality (nonduality), your original nature, and dwelling in the natural state as revealed by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.
FROM A SITE VISITOR: So isn’t the prevention of ego really all about just staying awake to what we’re thinking and doing and assuring that we remain humble? Patricia

The antidote for ego and egotism is not humility but is Realization.
The consideration for you is, how consistently have your efforts to “stay awake to what you’re thinking and doing” fixed you in what you would take to be “a state of humility”?
To even claim that one is “humble” is to expose some persona/personality that is proud of itself for being “humble.” Were the facts available, they would reveal that egotism manifests far more than humility when some person is trying to stay awake to thoughts and doingness.
The absence of egotism follows the absence of assumed ego-states, and the absence of assumed ego-states only follows forfeiture of body-mind-personality identification and completion of all seven steps to Realization.
To report that one is staying awake to what he/she is thinking is contradictory. Were one truly awakened, then no thinking would be happening. There would be no “one” to do any thinking, and there would be no “mind” by which thinking could happen.
In the relative, the going-ness and doingness and zooming-ness that result when persons are driven by ego-states (by false identities) that are trying to sustain themselves will automatically be accompanied by egotism and egocentrism. Humility will never disappear until the last false identity dis-appears, and the last false identity will not dis-appear until Realization happens and is followed by abidance as one’s original nature in one’s original state.
To know that original state, one must know “where” “one” was prior to conception, prior to consciousness. To know the natural state that was prior to manifestation (and that will once again be the natural state of the consciousness post-manifestation) is to glimpse the manner in which the consciousness can function NOW in a no-identity, no-ego, no-concept, non-duality Reality.
So, Patricia, if you would be truly awake and ego-free, then find the answer to the following five considerations:
1. Where were You in the days prior to conception?
2. What was Your Original nature?
3. What “characterized” that natural state?
4. Do you realize that this temporary period of manifestation can happen in the same mode as Your natural state prior to manifestation (which will also be Your natural state post-manifestation)?
5. Do you understand that Your present state is that natural state and that original nature but that Your awareness of that reality is blocked from awareness because of the ideas and concepts and beliefs that prevent the Pure Consciousness/True Self from knowing its nature? Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)
