An Advaita forum focusing on Realisation, enlightenment, non-duality, Real Love, peace, freedom, Your original nature, abiding naturally, the Oneness, the Nothingness, and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

Here, there is nothing that is believed, so there is no one here who wants you to believe anything, either. Here, the invitation is to be free of all that you have been programmed, conditioned, acculturated, and domesticated to believe so that you can be free, period.

From a site visitor: Does Louise teach the online classes?

F.: Yes. Details will be provided at the end of today's post.

From a seeker at a retreat (whose pre-retreat personality test revealed he is a Personality Type Two Helper / Rescuer): It seems to me that you are teaching people to be self-centred by saying that there is no one to be helped and no one who can help. I came here for help and I want to leave here and help others.

[The session was not being taped so the exact response is not available but the following is very close to the reply]:

First, the invitation here is to be Self-centred, that is, centred in the True Self as the later steps on the "path" are reached (rather than not being "centred" at all as a result of assuming so many false identities).

Next, there is no "one" to help or be helped; there is the Oneness, yes, but there is no "one" to do anything or to receive anything. (See yesterday's pointer: no "do-ers"....no "havers.")

If you have come here for help, then you have come with an unattainable agenda. Here, nothing is given; to the contrary, all is removed if the Understanding comes. Next, what is more self-ish, more centred in a false self, than the belief that you can help people, indicating your belief that you think you know exactly what everyone needs and that you can give them whatever that is.

These teachings are about de-accumulation; about realizing that there is actually no "teacher" because there is nothing to teach; about understanding that many seekers require professional treatment for physiological and mental and emotional problems which are so severe that they can never be addressed by any philosophy; and that here there is nothing to give and no "one" to receive.

You want to rescue, save, help, and improve. But why? Because you are so caring and loving? No. Those thoughts and words and actions come (a) because you are being driven by the desire of your primary personality type; (b) because the egotism that is generated by assuming the ego-state of "The Helper" persona has convinced you that you can single-handedly "fix" everyone;

(c) because you want to be loved by all, and believe that all will love you if you help them; (d) because of the fear of your primary personality type that you will never receive all of the love you now desire; and (e) because persons with that personality type are trying to make up for having received less love during childhood than the amount they wanted.

So here the talk is of You, the Real You, while you want to focus on the agenda and desires and fears of the "not-You personality type two."

When Maharaj's teachings regarding this very subject were called into question, the exchange unfolded thusly:

Questioner: To be content with mere being seems to be a most selfish way of passing time.

[F.: That comment almost always comes from one assuming the Type Three Personality that thinks it must go and do and zoom and perform and achieve and accomplish to exist; from one assuming the Type Two Personality of the Rescuer / Savior / Helper; or from one assuming the Type Eight Personality that thinks it has the right to control and manage and "shape others." It also often comes from one that has been programmed and conditioned to think and talk and behave in the Western fashion, always accumulating. In the case of the speaker above, the Type Two seems to be at the root of the thinking and talking.]

Maharaj replied: A most worthy way of being selfish! By all means be selfish by foregoing everything but the Self. When you love the Self and nothing else, you go beyond the selfish and the unselfish. All distinctions lose their meaning. Love of one and Love of all merge together in Love...pure and simple...addressed to none...denied to none.

From another seeker visiting here for a retreat: It seems Realization will make me robotic and lock me into a boring life.

The response: What is more boring that kneeling and standing and kneeling and standing, chanting chants and praying prayers or citing creeds or slogans in a zombie-like fashion and in unison with other persons? Can anything be more robotic than that?

You have been told that Realization need not prevent "husbanding" from happening; it will merely allow husbanding to happen without a belief in the false role of "The Husband"; without experiencing the imaginary fears and unmet desires of "The Husband"; and without the arrogance and egotism that manifest when "The Husband" upgrades itself to the level of "Super Husband."

Maharaj addressed the issue thusly:

Questioner: Does it mean that I must give up all idea of an active life?

Maharaj: "Not at all. There will be marriage, there will be children, there will be earning money to maintain a family; all this will happen in the natural course of events....

"You will go through it without resistance, facing tasks as they come, attentive and thorough..., but the general attitude will be of affectionate detachment, enormous goodwill....

"In marriage you are neither the husband nor the wife; you are The Love between the two. You are the clarity and kindness that makes everything orderly and happy.

"Your consciousness is raised to a higher dimension, from which You see everything much clearer and with greater intensity. You realise that the person you became at birth and will cease to be at death is temporary and false.

"You are not the sensual, emotional and intellectual person, gripped by desires and fears. Find out Your real being. 'What am l?' is the fundamental question of all philosophy and psychology. Go into it deeply."

Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)
