Here, there is nothing that is believed, so there is no one here who wants you to believe anything, either. Here, the invitation is to be free of all that you have been programmed, conditioned, acculturated, and domesticated to believe so that you can be free, period.
HOW THEY BEHAVE
F.: As noted, when personas are assumed, "they" think mainly of themselves and focus on unmet desires and imaginary fears and the ever-present sense of loss and / or gain. That leads to violence on many levels, including "individual relationships," "ideological and religious conflicts," and "international conflicts."
VIOLENCE IN "IDEOLOGICAL AND RELIGIOUS CONFLICTS"
Louise: Non-violence is only truly present in the absence of desire and fear. Its only when self-centredness falls away that violence ends; when the self (ego-sense) is present, everything is violent...."
F.: Is there any religious or spiritual persona that is free of desire? Is it not the case that both of those personas are rooted in fear and desire? Is there any greater example of "self-centredness" than believing that the way you think and talk and emote and behave is the only proper and acceptable way to think and talk and emote and behave?
Moreover, the longest-running trail of violence in history involves marauding Aryans who have consistently shown by thought, word, and deed that they are violent to the core. Throughout their history, they have exhibited an unchecked sense of entitlement and better-than-ness and "self-identification" and "ego-sense." Other than the violence generated by the members of that race, the second-longest running chain of violence has occurred during the last 5000 years.
That on-going violence has occurred as a result of the formation of religious and spiritual movements and the recruitment of members willing to become absorbed in the monomania that drives such persons to focus on the magical and mythical, to become subsumed in what Louise calls "self"-identification" and "ego-sense," and to dedicate their lives to either (a) converting people to their beliefs or to (2) eliminating those who will not convert either socially or literally.
Those persons have generated most of the violence on the planet during the last 5000 years as a result of their blind faith (which indicates blindness, period), their illogical character, their "self-centredness," and their desire that all people think as they think, talk as they talk, and behave as they behave. [To quote a relevant line from a Ridley Scott movie, "The enemies of reason have a certain blind look."]
Rather than accepting that appraisal from a former "insider" that is now an "outsider," consider what one Christian, more objective than most, had to say about his own religion (and note how it describes the behaviors of persons affiliated with most other religions as well):
** We are too confident that God thinks we're "all that."
** We are too quick to believe that we know what the teachings really mean [when we don't].
** We are too action-oriented. We Christians could stand to spend less time acting in the name of God. We need more passivity and less activity. More meditation, less machination. More reflection, less correction. More contemplation, less administration. More prayers, less airs. More mysticism, less ... um ... cretinism.
** We are too invasive of others generally.
** We are too invasive of others personally.
** We are too quick to abandon logic. [Again, "The enemies of reason have a certain blind look."] When talking to others about our faith, we Christians too often resort to a language and line of reasoning that leaves good old-fashioned logic sitting on the ground behind us, waving a sad good-bye.
** We are too fixated on homosexuality.
** We are too insular.
** We are too uneducated about Christianity. [To illustrate his point, how many Christians know that Jesus taught the Jewish dogma early on but that he offered the Advaitin teachings at the end of the manifestation? Considering that he merely repeated parts of the two sets of teachings that he was taught, how many recognize, therefore, that there was not, and is not, a "Christian message" at all?]
Religious agendas have become the justification and motivation of planet-wide violence. Consider all of the conflict that has come from an institution that touts itself as the purveyor and guardian of peace. Jews separate; Muslims agitate; and Christians dictate. All three, suffering from an extreme case of mythomania, kill in the name of their God, who they believe has a history of killing in his own name.
The three sky cults of Abraham believe in a God that opened the ground and swallowed up thousands who had displeased him; believe that he set up armies for defeat with a hundred thousand dying in a day; and believe that he became so disappointed and angry with the persons he "created" that he supposedly destroyed all of them except for the members of one family.
When persons believe in such a "God of Violence" and then set out to be god-like themselves, what else can they possibly become except...violent? What else will they be driven to do except "break relations" with any who are "different from" or "not good enough"? WWGD? ("What Would God Do?") In their belief systems, he would crush, punish, slaughter, slay and eradicate.
Therefore, being god-like, what must they do? Crush, punish, slaughter, slay and eradicate. When one's God is revealed as an entity that models thrashings, beatings, carnage, butchery, massacres, and murders, and when one is taught that he / she is to model his / her God, beware...awaken...take heed...move...in fact, run like the wind.
If you are deemed not to be a good Christian? "We must divorce." Not a Muslim? "You must die." A member of the wrong denomination or sect? "You must be shunned or killed." Among those lost in the false identity of "The Religious One," then peace too shall be lost and violence shall rush in to fill the void.
And if trapped in the false identity of "The Spiritual One," you will merely be dealing with a persona that was created with a recipe that blends one part religion and two parts sense of superiority: "I are not religious...I am spiritual," or "We are not a religious program...oh no. We are a spiritual program."
Ahhhh. So kudos are in order? The real message is: "We give lip service to unity and oneness, but we separate ourselves from those of lesser rank who are merely religious (all spoken with no awareness of what our words are revealing to those who are awake enough to hear the arrogance behind our proclamations").
Hierarchy. Hierarchy. Hierarchy. Separation. Separation. Separation. Better-than-ness. Better-than-ness. Better-than-ness. Time for a new recipe: take one part hierarchy, one part sense of separation, and one part sense of better-than-ness;
blend in to that concoction a desire to be god-like and mix it all in with a belief in a God of violence; then stand back because the product that follows is going to be volatile, unstable, dangerous, and explosive.
Feast on that potion and you will assume yourself to be as powerful as God, deciding what "relationships" should end; dictating to others exactly what they should think and say and believe and how they should behave; and then punishing those who fall short of your dogma-based expectations.
Drink this magical brew and you'll be "confident God thinks you're 'all that'"; you'll be "quick to believe that you understand teachings that you do not"; you'll be " action-oriented" and "cretin-like"; you'll feel "entitled to be invasive";
you'll be "quick to abandon logic"; you'll be "fixated on homosexuality" and on everything else that differs from the way you think you are; you'll be "insular" while giving lip service to being open and welcoming; and you'll actually be totally uneducated about the real meaning of the few reasonable and logical elements of your dogma.
And all of that will inspire you to reject "others"; will strap you with arrogance while claiming humility; or will strap you into a bomb vest. Belief in such arrogance-and-personality-based concepts will set you up to buy into other nonsensical concepts such as "Manifest Destiny," used as an excuse to kill 150,000,000 during the invasion of, and decimation of the people already living in, "the New World."
Personality generates fear and desire, and fear and desire generate a willingness to believe in an outer power or a Higher Power that can address one's personality-based fears and desires.
As long as the personality (which usually forms by the age of six) is the unseen motivator of thought and word and deed, then persons of all ages will behave as six-year olds, believing in and calling on a God to magically grant their wishes. Maharaj said of that phenomenon:
"With the body comes the world, with the world - God, who is supposed to have created the world and thus it starts - fears, religions, prayers, sacrifices, all sorts of systems - all to protect and support the child-man, frightened out of his wits by monsters of his own making."
Humankind creates fears and then religions and a God or Gods to address the fears. And since the creation is not real, it is all a product of the fiction-filled, fiction-generating "mind"? Yes. Again, Maharaj:
"Look at the mind as a function of matter and you have science; look at matter as the product of the mind and you have religion"
and
"Recorded religions are mere heaps of verbiage. Religions show their true face in action, in silent action. To know what man believes, watch how he acts. For most of the people service of their bodies and their minds is their religion."
Yet one of the more significant ironies involving the seven-step "journey" to Realization - to the no-identity state - is the fact that the third of the seven steps requires the assumption of and playing of a new identity: "The Religious One" or "The Spiritual One" and even "The Spiritual Giant."
That baffling paradox leads to the confusion that accounts for the fact that only a small number of seekers will ever Realize: believing at the third of seven steps that they have "arrived," they fixate at a place that in nowhere near their actual "final destination."
It is not unlike a traveler who has longed for her / his entire manifestation to visit the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and enjoy that which is truly natural. It is not unlike a person
(1) leaving Kolkata, setting out to visit that park in Mumbai; (2) arriving in Nagpur while believing that she / he has reached Mumbai; (3) spending the entire remainder of the journey in the Sri Poddareshwar Ram Temple (a site associated with the Hindu religion) while believing that one has arrived in the nisarga / natural setting of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park;
(4) yet feeling as if something is missing, that something about the temple is not quite natural while (5) telling the people there that her / his real goal is to reach the natural state of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and asking if she / he has arrived; and then (6) being assured by the people operating the temple that he has indeed completed the journey that she / he set out to complete.
No more than Nagpur can be said truthfully to be the place called "Mumbai" can the religious or spiritual stage be said truthfully to be the place called "Full Realization."
Please enter the silence of contemplation. (To be continued)
