CONSCIOUSNESS and AWARENESS
To review: There is no “you” or “me.” Those are taught and learned concepts, and all taught and learned concepts are false.
That which is mistaken for a “you” or “me” is nothing more than an image floating by in the stream of consciousness which is projected onto a screen - in this case, the "mind's eye" - and is as much a false image as one being cast by a projector onto the screen of a movie theater.
What is presently manifested and being mistaken for a "you" or a "me" is actually nothing more than
a composite unity, a triad of constantly circulating (that is, “coming and going”)
plant food elements which are forming a temporary space; air / oxygen which is constantly
circulating throughout the space; and conscious-energy which is also constantly circulating throughout the space.
The body can no more maintain continuity with only the amount of oxygen currently within it at any given moment than it can maintain continuity with only the amount of conscious-energy currently within it at any given moment.
Thus, the elements forming the body come and go; the oxygen comes and go; and the temporarily-manifested consciousness / conscious-energy comes and goes.
All three must be regularly "replenished" in order for body continuity to happen for whatever period it is going to happen. Everything merely cycles, so the non-dual understanding recognizes no dreamed up timelines.
To continue with Maharaj's lighter imagery:
1. As the cigarette lighter that is tossed in the garbage and hauled off to a
landfill will deteriorate, and
2. as the elements which come together to form the space which holds the fuel
and which provides the opportunity for light / fire to manifest will eventually
come apart,
so too is the case with each composite unity.
While throwaway cultures now have mainly "disposable lighters" which
are used until their single, limited amount of fuel is exhausted, Maharaj's
lighter was one that could be refilled time and again whenever more fuel was
needed for the functioning of the lighter; so too the case is that all
elemental bodies require a resupplying of food / fuel for their
functioning.
The food / fuel moved about with Maharaj's elemental lighter, and the potentiality for light was there;
the conscious-energy moves about in a space formed by the coming together of elements, yet that consciousness is not the vehicle by which it moves.
As Maharaj noted, just because a human body might be moved about within a car does not mean that the human is the car. The body is merely something that move conscious-energy about and is not "you" or "me."
A while back, the elemental plant body-cum-consciousness was moved by airplane from Houston to Los Angeles, but that does not mean that I was an airplane because that happened. During the past few days, the elemental plant body-cum-consciousness was moved by car from the community called Walden where I abide to Austin and then back.
The belief or thought that I was the car never arose even once, yet that is the commonplace belief held among the "non-realized" masses: this body moving the conscious-energy about is . . . "me."
I - the manifest consciousness - am not whatever I might be manifested within.
I am not that space. I remain the energy, the purely and accurately witnessing
energy. If one wants to define what "the True Self" is, the term
"The Pure Witnessing" is as close as need be for the sake of
discussing that temporary "True Self-ness." One can play that game for a spell as long as it is understood that there is no self or Self.
Furthermore, in the Original State where awareness is not aware of, THAT
which I was prior to a manifested speck of conscious-energy was nothing more
than a speck of unaware energy with the potentiality to manifest as a speck of
consciousness and to realize, a process which allows the unblocked
consciousness to facilitate the process by which awareness becomes aware of
itself and its Original Nature.
As with Maharaj's lighter that provided a "potentiality" for the
manifesting of light / fire, so too is the case with humans: a speck of energy
has the potential to manifest if a chance series of things and happenings come
together at a certain point . . . a "coming together" that involves a
pair of composite unities that will be called "a father" and "a
mother."
Those unities are elemental; there is oxygen present; there is fuel / food that
has been introduced; there is an act of friction that happens as a result of
natural urges; and, in some cases, the act of friction
triggers a "spark" that sets off a chain reaction - that sets into motion a series of spontaneous, natural happenings which provide another elemental plant food space within which food can be introduced and the process of generating light can continue. Nothing more is happening than a series of cyclings.
No one has ever "made a baby" or "had a child." After an act of friction fertilizes an egg, a composite unity cycles food / elements and oxygen and conscious-energy, and the formation of the space called "the body" or "the baby" all happens spontaneously.
Similarly, the light / fire that the lighter provided for Maharaj was possible
because all of the things and happenings which were required for that process to
unfold had come together at one particular time and in a particular
space:
there was the space formed by elements; there was fuel introduced inside that
space; there was an act of friction that generated a spark; there was the
oxygen required for the fuel to help trigger a process that then spontaneously
and automatically generated light / fire.
The same happens with humans and birds and deer and roaches and insects, and trees and all plants, etc.:
all of the things and happenings that are required for a reproductive process
to unfold come together at one particular time and in a particular space.
There are the spaces formed by elements that are called "a male" and
"a female"; there are plant cells that were consumed and that
converted into human cells (or bird cells or deer cells or roach cells or
insect cells, etc.);
there is fuel / food introduced inside that space (be that food introduced via
the eating of plants or the eating of something that ate plants); there was an
act of friction that generated a "spark"; and there was the oxygen
required for the fuel / food to be able to trigger a process that then spontaneously
and automatically generated the manifestation of light / fire.
And, as with Maharaj's lighter, there was a temporary manifestation of light,
the kind of light that in a dark barn could facilitate the clear witnessing
that allows what was first thought to be a snake to be seen for what it really
is, just a harmless rope (or to see, in the case of those Maharaj called
"Big Name Teachers") that what was first thought to be a harmless
rope might well be a far-from-harmless snake, of sorts.
Again, the plant food elements are circulating via the consumption of plants or
something that ate plants, and the body-cum-consciousness is neither a
space that has continuity nor is it the conscious-energy manifested therein.
When the manifestation comes to an end, the elements will return to the
universal pool of elements; the air will return to the universal pool of air;
and the conscious-energy will return to the universal pool of conscious-energy.
End of the story.
And again, a flame / light manifests as a result of the chance combination of
earth elements, the fuel, and a spark (the act of friction).
Next, add in the point shared earlier which was offered by scientist Szent-Gyorgyi who noted that “what
drives life is thus a little electric current [providing a spark, if you will]
set up by the sunshine.”
It really is so simple. It is being driven by the typically-unconscious agenda of humans' mind with all of their bogus concepts and their false beliefs which
lead to the complicating of the existence and which blocks the understanding of the functioning of the totality.
Then add in the gullibility generated by the nonsense stored in human minds and one can understand why "Shakespeare the Advaitin" wrote about how leaders - in religion, in politics, in monarchies, in business, etc. - can so easily manipulate the masses.
In the 300's A.D., religious leaders met to consider the content in what they
called "The Holy Bible." At their councils, they determined that
1,000 chapters that spoke of the humanity of one called "Jesus
Christ" had to be removed from all copies and burned in order to have only
versions that supported the conceptualized "divinity" of the
man.
They determined that the women who had been in charge of the religion had to be
removed and that only unmarried men could perform the duties of "the
priest." [Attracting men from that group only surely couldn't lead to any problems such as sexual molestation, right?]
They determined that services should be presented in Latin, a language that the
masses could not even understand.
They determined that private ownership of a Bible would be an offense
punishable by death, claiming that only priests could properly interpret the
meaning of scriptures. [The concept of "CYA" goes way back.]
But one other change they made was also significant: in their still-continuing
debate about why an all-powerful God could not stamp out evil and why "bad
things happen to good people," they determined that they would introduce
the concept of a second god, a god of evil.
They modeled that god after the ancient evil gods of Greece and Rome: an entity that also
had a pitchfork and a tail and horns. They took the Hebrew word for "the
enemy," namely "satan" (often also used originally to refer to
egotism) and they took the pagan name for a god of insects
("beelzebub") and they capitalized both of those names and invented the idea of a
second god.
That second god they claimed was a god of evil named "Satan" or
"Beelzebub," and they explained that the bad, rebellious god was the
reason that evil existed in spite of there being a supposedly all-loving,
all-knowing, all-powerful god. They reported that there is a battle going on
across the heavens as the two fight "for the hearts and souls and
minds" of humankind.
Then, one priest pointed out a line in their holy text that they concluded had
to be removed from a book that millions deem "holy" and infallible
because it was "written by God," but that line they expunged because
it contradicted the newly-dreamed-up fiction about a "god of evil, a
Satan" who is responsible for all evil in the world. Obviously, that
particular line was the exception, one that was sneaked into the scriptures
without having been inspired by God.
That original line said: "You have been given a simple life. Man's
complex problems are of his own making. "
Not the makings of a god of evil? No. Not the makings of
"Satan"? No. So of course that line had to be removed from their supposedly "holy scriptures." Why? Because it pointed to
the truth rather than supporting their newest, dreamed-up lie that would
eventually be spread around the entire globe.
As Maharaj reported over and over, the non-dual understanding really is so very simple. It is humans
with their complex concepts and ideas and notions and perceptions and
misperceptions and dogma (a.k.a., "beliefs") that complicate and prevent understanding (and, therefore, the
human existence).
Indeed, the problems of humankind do truly center in the mind. It is the mind
that is the carrier of the germs which cause the Ultimate Sickness.
Maharaj's lighter worked as it was always expected to work. It never became
infected with the germs of the Ultimate Sickness. Neither have deer nor fish
nor roaches not insects nor anything else living on planet earth, except for
humans.
The lighter had no mind. It functioned naturally, according to the natural laws
of nature and physics. Would that humans could do the same.
Alas, most will never even do as well as Maharaj's lighter, because most do not
abide by the natural laws of nature and physics. They abide under the auspices
of a mind filled with what Maharaj called "ignorance and stupidity and
insanity."
The Ultimate Medicine is received only by those who can hear and consider
objectively but never by those who continue to deny and spin and justify their
belief in insane concepts which are disguised by the cloaks of religion or
spirituality or accumulated "knowledge," (a.k.a., learned ignorance).
