CONSCIOUSNESS and AWARENESS
So here's a review of the various
parts of Maharaj's metaphor of the lighter:
Then, Maharaj used the flame to represent the essence of the manifestation as well, not just that which provides light and not only that which allows for clear witnessing of truth and not only that which can allow for the ability to differentiate the false from the true but also that which represents the very essence of the manifestation:
Yes, he also used the flame to make clear that "Love" (which allows for the understanding of the unicity to come) has nothing to do with the subject-object version of so-called "love" (which is the only version that the non-realized can speak of).
To understand Love is to understand that you are everything, meaning that you understand the functioning of the totality and can trace the roots of "this universe" back to the one, original atom that accounts for the commonality - the Oneness - of all.
To understand Love is to understand that there are no hierarchies, no actual separation, no better-than-ment, and no different-from-ment; furthermore, to understand that there are no hierarchies, no actual separation, no better-than-ment, and no different-from-ment is to bring to an end the arrogance and egotism which give rise to a false sense of division and which generates chaos and desires and fears and which inspire an addiction to control and power which leads in turn to tension and disagreements and disharmony and discord and divorce and conflict and fighting and skirmishes and clashes and battles and wars.
By contrast, if one is driven by the sweet taste of the essence - that is, by the sweet taste of the nectar of both the essence of the AM-ness as well as the sweet taste of the nectar of immortality while devoid of the false notion of self-ness or Self-ness - then the reminder of the manifestation can unfold in a manner which will be marked by an absence of the symptoms of the Ultimate Sickness which Maharaj identified as "ignorance, stupidity, and insanity."
Because there is nothing that is personal and there is no "one" who is a person, his pointer does not imply that there are ignorant persons, stupid persons, or insane persons. No, there is just the ignorance, the stupidity, and the insanity which can be treated by those who are willing to open up and take the Ultimate Medicine of truth.
So why do so few realize (meaning, “Why do so few ever become free of the learned ignorance
which they were taught?") Because . . .
though the Ultimate Medicine can provide a relative existence that is flavored by the sweet taste of the essence

though the Ultimate Medicine can provide a relative
existence that is flavored by the sweet
taste of the nectar of both the essence of the AM-ness as well as the sweet
taste of the nectar of immortality, the rub is that . . .
the Ultimate Medicine has what "non-realized persons" take to be a very bitter taste.
It has been said that "the truth will set you free," but what is usually not added is, "however, it will really piss you off first."
Why? Because at every step of the treatment, the supposedly "defining" beliefs of one ego-state after another must be challenged. It is like the chemotherapy that makes you feel worse at first in order to try to make make you feel better later.
(The view from Maharaj and here as well is that
(1) the desire among the masses for body continuity and manifested consciousness continuity is far less worthy than the masses believe
and that
(2) what is recommended by most doctors who BS themselves and others to believe that they are indeed saviors and Gods is far less often based in truth and wisdom than they would admit and they would have the masses believe, but that's another story completely.)
The path here crossed the path of one playing the role of "The Spiritual Giant" who was touting the benefits he was receiving from his on-going use of the latest "spiritual-fad-du-jour" which the snake oil salespeople are calling "Clear Mind Work."
So what is required for this latest "Clear Mind Work" fad? Quite an elaborate system, as it turns out. You'll need a special cap - only a "qEEG Brain Cap" will do; you'll need a laptop computer with the most current Windows operating system and all necessary software pre-loaded;
you'll need 3-Photic Glasses (with blue, green, and yellow colors); you'll require gold electrical leads; you'll also need the Staff Training DVD and Special Headphones and a NeuroIntegrator Box and a Neuro-map EEG Box and Level 1 Training as well as Paste and Conductive Gel.
The self-defined "Spiritual Giant" also reported that, for those who are truly dedicated to having a "clear mind," the recommendation is to "purchase as well a UBS Light and Sound Meditation Mind Machine, an Audio Visual Synthesizer, and a Special Lighting System."
Recommended Retail Cost for one state of the art system: Over $5,000.00.
Was Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj incompetent? There is not one single instance to be found when he notified any seeker coming to his loft that the seeker should remember to bring all of the proper and necessary equipment along if they have any hope at all of leaving with "a clear mind."
Yes, the results of a trained professional's use of EMDR with clients, which can involve a light bar or sounds, have been shown to be effective. But sitting alone in front of a light bar will produce no lasting results at all as far as processing the unprocessed samskaras (or memories) which - like personalities - subconsciously drive self-destructive thoughts and words and actions (relatively speaking).
But the relevant facts about the myth of "getting a clear mind" are these: there is no such thing as a clear mind. Either there is a mind, which is filled with totally unclear nonsense and fiction, or there is no mind at all.
The content of the book THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS PEACE OF
MIND (There Is Only Peace If You Are Out of Your Mind) discusses and analyzes that pointer in detail.
What Maharaj made clear is this: if one realizes, a no-mind state is reached. If one understands Maharaj's teachings, then a "zero concepts" state is reached. Maharaj spoke of "the mind" along the way, but in the end, he made clear that one is not seeking a "clear mind"; the goal, instead, is freedom from the mind completely.
Almost every living thing on planet earth abides via the auspices of the no-mind brain and intuition and all six of the basic senses. Only humans have a part of the brain called "the mind" which has evolved to store and retrieve and which is now full of nonsensical fiction.
That area, the mind, was originally "an asset," a center of problem solution; a tool used to facilitate the perpetuation of the species. Now, it has become "a liability," the center of the problem, and something that is hindering and retarding and impeding the perpetuation of the species.
Recognizing that "the truth will set you free, but it will piss you off first," how did the man touting the benefits of the use of his "Clear Mind Machine / System" respond when he was asked if he might be interested in two different possible perspectives?
He said "yes" but he really meant "no," so the response was not positive after the two considerations were offered, those being the following:
"Is it possible that you have as little chance of getting a clear mind and keeping it that way as you have of getting a clear colon and keeping it that way?"
and
"Is it possible that both the mind and the colon are chock full of the same thing, really?"
After the seething subsided, his egos-states all joined forces to justify his continuing with his "clear mind work," saying, "Floyd, we all has different vehicles to use to get through this life."
The reply: "Indeed, you are spot on. And a few of those vehicles are running efficiently, hitting in perfect timing and rhythm on all cylinders. All the rest are clunkers."
End of discussion.
So back to the question, "Why do so few realize?" Because they believe that there is a payoff, and that payoff - which involves nonsensical thoughts and words and actions - is a compilation of activities and doingness which are all entered into subconsciously and which all reinforce a host of ego-states that all have a desire to be different from, better than, unique, more realized, more enlightened, and more liberated than all others.
To realize is to step off the ladder; to climb down from the uppermost range of the hierarchy where one supposes that he or she is at the top, or getting close; to abandon all religious and spiritual workaholism; and to abide naturally and simply and spontaneously.
If the third leg as well as the second leg of "the journey" is completed, these can happen: abiding naturally and simply and spontaneously; abiding sanely; abiding in a way that is free of all of the magical thinking that is generated by the main problem - the mind; and then living under the auspices of the properly-functioning brain rather than the malfunctioning mind.
That is what "Applied Advaita" looks like. What it does not look like is someone sitting in a room next to all of the elements of the Clear Mind Kit, wearing tri-color glasses and a funny-looking knit cap that is said to be "the special qEEG Brain Cap."
