CONSCIOUSNESS and AWARENESS
To clarify: There is nothing mystical or special or extraordinary about the Absolute, about consciousness, or about awareness.
The Absolute is simply an open field of energy containing two types of energy which are of interest to "non-dual seekers." One type, conscious-energy, may manifest within a space or may never manifest.
If it does manifest in a confined space which came about after a form came into existence (such as a plant, an acorn, a human, whatever) then that form can have the capability to become conscious of what it witnesses and also conscious of itself (and understand - in the case of human forms - "I am").
It is the conscious-energy / consciousness within an acorn that allow for a spontaneous and automatic process to happen, namely, the process which results in the formation of one oak tree, and another oak tree, etc., until an entire forest of oak trees manifests.
Yet witnessing among the human masses always happens in a subject-object fashion, so that type of witnessing assures that duality will be nurtured.
The other type of energy in the open space of the Absolute - namely, awareness - is quite different.
"Pure Witnessing" is non-dual witnessing rather than being a subject-object version of perceiving / misperceiving.
If the effects of programming, conditioning, etc. are eliminated via realization (that is, via eliminating all belief in all duality-based learned ignorance) then awareness (and clear, accurate perceiving) can happen. A proper truth-based perspective can result if the ignorance and insanity which drive all among "the non-realized human masses" are transcended.
Consciousness will forever involve one degree or another of duality, always setting the stage for a belief in "the other" to occur; awareness on the other hand is not hindered by any duality-based beliefs or perspectives or perceptions.
If an effective consciousness-purification process happens, than awareness can manifest, and manifested awareness allows for an awareness of the oneness, of the functioning of the totality, of the absence of any belief in an "other," of the absence of any sense of different-from-ment and, therefore, an absence of any sense of better-than-ment.
Maharaj often used "visual aides" or "teachings aides" to clarify his pointers. The same has always happened here.
Over the years, I received multiple requests to explain Maharaj’s metaphor of the lighter. The analogy has always seemed to be quite straightforward, so no space on the site was given to the topic, but more questions about the lighter metaphor made clear that the message Maharaj was trying to convey has not always hit the mark with some.
Because
it can be relevant to certain aspects involved with the current discussion on this site, here goes:
The problem that some have in understanding fully the points that Maharaj was
trying to convey via the lighter is that some seekers have concluded that the
lighter represents something personal, just as they have looked at their
bodies and minds and personalities and taken those to have some sort of personal
aspects as well.
The invitation is to understand that there is nothing personal, either now or
“later.” As discussed in the eBook THERE IS NOTHING THAT IS PERSONAL
(Including You and Including God), the requirement to reach that nothing-personal
understanding begins with giving up the notion of body-identification, and
giving up the notion of body-identification requires understanding what the
body and this perceived “you” actually is.
That, in turn, requires understanding that the “you” and the “I” which the
masses speak of is not something personal but is nothing more than a
composite unity mentioned earlier.
So understand first that what is taken by most to be a “you” or a “me” is
actually nothing more than a composite unity, a triad of constantly circulating
(that is, “coming and going”) plant food elements that are
forming a space, air that is constantly circulating, and conscious-energy
that is also constantly circulating.
Again, to review: The pointer involving a composite unity is one which most humans will never grasp. They will never understand that there is no body continuity.
To review from yesterday: Plant food elements are constantly coming together and coming apart. Skin is shed constantly and replaced in total every 28 days. The stomach lining is replaced every 3 days or so. The only reason that persons think that they have always had “this same body” is because of samskaras (mental impressions or memories), which are always false.
Plant food cells are converted into humans cells which all come and go. Most know that the air is always circulating, but many do not understand that the conscious-energy is also circulating, also coming and going "into and out of" the space called "a human body."
Because of the above
circulations or cycling, human must eat regularly to replace cells that are going and to
replace conscious-energy which comes and goes as well.
So, the plant food elements are circulating via the consumption of plants or
something that ate plants, and the body-cum-consciousness is not a space that
has continuity; neither is the conscious-energy manifested therein the same
specks of conscious-energy that were therein the day before.
When the manifestation comes to an end, the elements will return to the
universal pool of elements; the air will return to the universal pool of air;
and the conscious-energy will return to the universal pool of
conscious-energy.
So what’s the analogy?
While scientists do not suggest that fire can be classified as either matter or
energy, most do agree that it is the result of a process involving both, an
energetic combination of various substances and oxygen that can release light and
heat.
Air / oxygen is required for the process by which a lighter can generate fire /
light; so is an act of friction. So consider:
Then note that a flame / light manifests as a result of the chance combination of earth elements, the fuel, and a spark (the act of friction).
Next, add in the point mentioned yesterday which was offered by the scientist Szent-Gyorgyi. He noted that “what drives life is thus a little electric current [providing a spark, if you will] set up by the sunshine.” Note the part of the lighter that - by generating an act of friction - activates the spark:
Now see what conclusions you can draw from the metaphor and see if the analogy makes more sense. The explanation will then continue after I pause to spend some a couple of days with the two known as "my granddaughters."
