ANNOUNCEMENTS
[Walter Driscoll asked to interview me in order to preserve on video some of the latest modifications and evolutions in the versions of the message offered here since 1989. He would label the discussion, "Unlearning with Floyd Henderson."
Please note: For those who have a problem hearing what is being shared, the video offers a fairly accurate set of closed captions which some listeners might want to activate.
The interview is available for viewing by clicking on video "NUMBER THIRTEEN" in the column to the right.]
1. [See the offer in gold text following this post for details on how you can watch a retreat on video which includes a detailed discussion of all seven of the steps on the path as used by Maharaj]
2. Here, with those who are still driven to talk about "god," the "Son of god," the "Holy Spirit," "Buddha," "Krishna," etc., etc., etc., the invitation to them is to view those as verbs, not nouns. See the green text after today's post for the full meaning and implications of that.
3. A newer video ("Number Ten: Awakening Together Satsang, March 2018") has now been added in the far right column of this page, offering the opportunity to view a recent 2018 satsang session with Floyd being interviewed by Regina and Jacqueline of "The Awakening Together Group." (See the details in the blue text after this post.)
4. Some prefer paperback books even if they have to wait a day or so to receive it and have to pay more for a printed book and its shipment. Now, 10 paperback books by Henderson are in print and available in two anthologies through Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and over 40,000+ booksellers around the globe including in the Americas, Germany, India, Italy, Poland, Russia, China, Spain, Brazil and South Korea. FREEDOM FROM
SHIFTING BETWEEN STATES OF HAPPINESS AND UNHAPPINESS
“A dual-minded person is unstable in all ways.”
-Yeshu’a
“Self-identification with the body-mind is the poison that brings bondage.”
--Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
“The dissolution of personality is followed always by a sense of great relief, as if a heavy burden has fallen off.”
--Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
“You are so used to the support of concepts that when your concepts leave you, although it is your true state, you get frightened and try to cling to them again.”
--Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
Addressing “The Big Four”: The Sources of Instability and Being Unstable Mentally
(Continued)
Another contributor to unhappiness (and to instability, which assures that periods of happiness will be regularly interrupted by periods of unhappiness) is a belief in the concept of “time.” That concept plays a major role in generating illusions that result in unhappiness and instability because
(1) “linear time” is about division, separation, and the dualistic concepts of “this” being more special than “that” and “this day being better than that one” and “holy days being more important than other ‘regular’ days”
and because
(2) just as current distortions will be “future memories,” so past distortions are your “current memories.”
First, time. Consider how time is used to reinforce the dualistic concepts of “different from” and “better than” and “more special than” and “less special than.”
For those arising to go to work, 5 AM or 6 AM or 7 AM might be considered a “bad” time when an alarm is heard. Later, “noon” might be “good” if a lunch break is available. 5 PM is “better” if works ends then.
“Time” enslaves. It sets persons up to “experience” “up’s” and “down’s” - as well as periods of contentment and discontentment - throughout any “24-hour period.”
Then, those days become weeks in the minds of persons tied to “time” concepts. According to some, therefore, “Mondays” are “bad” but “Wednesdays” are an improvement since they represent “Hump Day” and since the week is considered to be a downhill coast from there.
Fridays and Saturdays are “good,” and “Sundays” are “holy” and “more special” than the other six days of the week. If programmed and conditioned with the typical Anglo-Saxon mentality, one day is for rest and relaxing and taking it easy, while six days are for working and not relaxing and not taking it easy.
That Germanic / Teutonic “work will set you free” belief system inspires cultural programming which sets humans up for an unconscious, unquestioned acceptance that it's “normal” and acceptable to believe that a week's ratio of rest-to-work should be 14.28% : 85.72%.
That is, 14% of a human's week is okay for rest but the other 86% of a human's week should be set aside for work. “You want to spend more than one day a week for relaxing and taking it easy? Then you are useless to the Motherland, so you can go to hell. Better yet, you can die, you lazy, worthless bum.”
He who is stabilized and who takes it easy - without interruption - is unacceptable or strange in cultures where instability and chaos are “minimized” and “normalized” with such conditioning statements as:
“Hey, life is all about ups and downs. Suck it up and get used to it.”
Many modern cultures thus endorse instability and justify their chaos and
disorder on an individual basis, on a national basis throughout the year, and
on an international basis as well
That will always result in “personal” instability; that will result in a nation that is often in disarray; and that will result in some international crises and wars, guaranteed. And it will all be considered “normal” and “acceptable” among a conditioned population.
The concept of “various months” also generates a sense of differentiation and thus mood instability: “Winters are too cold and dark and dreary, but summers are too hot.”
Rather than enjoying uninterrupted stability (no matter
what name someone gives to the time of the week or the time of the month or the
time of the year) linear time distinctions guarantee a sense of separation and
instability and shifting moods
The result is a planet populated with self-absorbed persons who are trapped in “The Goldilocks Syndrome,” so these types of “thoughts” and “words” become commonplace:
“This time of year is too hot but that time of year is too cold”; “this partner is too hot but that one was too cold”; and “you cooked this egg too hard but the one yesterday was too soft.”
Trapped in such differentiation, only “perfection” is acceptable, but the concept of “perfect” - when applied to anything in the relative - is as bogus as all concepts;
therefore, no consistent sense of satisfaction or acceptance or neutrality or joy will happen among the non-realized who are trapped in concepts and time distinctions and beliefs about what constitutes “perfection” and what constitutes “not perfection.”
Because “different” days and “different” months are assigned different levels of “goodness” or “badness,” moods can become unstable as a result of nothing more than labeling.
Next, the labeling of some days or weeks as “holidays” (“holy days”) takes the instability to new heights as not only are “hours” and “days” given good or bad labels, but such dualistic labels are also applied to “months” and “seasons” and “years.”
Even as they proclaim “I love this time of year,” few are aware of how emotionally-intoxicated and completely unstable they become every year during the “holidays,” be those celebrations called Deepawali, Liberation Day or Independence Day, Halloween, The Day of the Dead,
Thanksgiving, Ramadan, Easter, Spring Break, Advent, Bodhi Day, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Purim, Hanukkah, Eid-al-Adha, New Year’s, Rosh Hashanah, Al-Hijra, or some other “special” event.
And how many of those few who might become aware of that annual pattern would be willing to abandon their seasonal going and doing and zooming in order to allow sanity and stability to manifest?
How much truth can be involved when some think something is “good” but others think it is “bad”? Consider “Thanksgiving” in the U.S.:
most citizens believe that the concept on which the holiday is based is certainly “good”: a “new nation” was founded that is based in Christian doctrine. (“A Christian theocracy here is ‘good’ but an Islamic theocracy there would be ‘bad’.”)
If the 150,000,000 to 180,000,000 who were slaughtered in the conquest of “the Americas” had a voice, they might beg to differ about the noble connotation assigned by the masses to the U.S. “Thanksgiving holiday.”
Non-Christians and people living on other parts of the globe might have no opinion about the holiday or might consider it nonsense. “Good” . . . “bad” . . . “indifferent”? Where is the stability?
Only the realized, aware that it is all conceptual (and therefore all much ado about nothing) are free of being “swayed” by any emotionalism around events dreamed up by men and women.
They are also free of any emotionally-intoxicating “memories” of events such as “past holidays” that were better because of “this” or “that” which is now “missing.”
Similarly, two billion persons would claim that it is “good” to celebrate a virgin birth during “the Christmas holidays.” [It might best be labeled, “Magical Thinking Day.”] Four billion non-Christians who claim affiliation with other religions, however, would consider the holiday to be a celebration of infidels or “wrong believers.”
Some dismiss the celebration as one based in pagan-based fiction, Christianity having been the twenty-third religion (not the first) which was based on the belief that a savior was supposedly born of a virgin.
Is it clear that the concept of linear time sets the stage for “up’s” and “down’s,” for instability, and for fluctuations between happiness and unhappiness to happen throughout the year, throughout the months, throughout any given week, throughout any given day, and even throughout any given hour?
Add in the physical, mental and intellectual fluctuations that occur throughout any given 30-day time-frame and the result is a very unstable population planet-wide.
Are you beginning to see how multi-faceted the factors are that contribute to instability and to the subsequent shifting from various states of comfort and discomfort, from happiness to unhappiness?
Are you seeing that anything that is “multi-” in nature is a fraud and that peace and stability can only happen if fixated in the singularity of the non-dual, no-concept reality of the unicity?
It is in abidance as the real and true unicity, which can be understood after abandoning belief in all fictionalized multiplicities, that peace and stability happen consistently throughout the manifestation.
Among the realized, there is no time. There is no differentiation by second, minute, hour, day, month, season, year, decade, century, or millennium. There is only continuity and steadiness.
What significance could I possibly give to a man-made concept such as “a season” when I have always been and always shall be? Understand that, and be at peace.
To be continued.
Please enter into the silence of contemplation.
