WHEN FREEDOM and TRUTH ARE LOST through SHARING “CONVENTIONAL WISDOM” AND BELIEFS in GROUPS AND INSTITUTIONS

In the 1860s, Robert Mills Luster served as a Confederate tax collector and then as Louisiana’s superintendent of education following the Civil War. The Reconstruction-era educator wrote that the chief goal of education was to “vindicate the honor and supremacy of the Caucasian race.”
Today, that is the current philosophy being espoused by governmental institutions in Texas and all across the U.S.
In the last decade of his life, Lusher edited his Louisiana Journal of Education wherein he called for “manual training” for black students and the removal of rights from black citizens. He filled the pages of his unfinished memoir by reminiscing over a lifetime of advocacy for white supremacy.
Simply put, Lusher did not believe in educating black people and he spread his belief in the concept of white supremacy. But today, a K-12 public school in New Orleans - one with a majority black student population - bears his name.
“What a slap in the face,” said Phylicia Richardson, a black woman whose daughter attends high school at . . . Lusher Charter School.
Yet Luster did not act alone: groups and institutions across the U.S. supported him, and the persons nowadays that are taking his same stance are supporting the fact that there are 304 schools in the U.S. that are named in honor of Confederate leaders who fought to overthrown the U.S. Government.
There are thousands of people who have formed and joined groups to protect “the Confederate legacy” via memorials, school names and public statues.
The surge in erecting those memorials and naming those schools and erecting statues of Confederate “heroes” did not begin in 1865 when the war ended. The surge began in the 1950’s and 1960’s as a form of intimidation when the federal government began to show an interest in establishing rights for blacks.
When groups and institutions organize, the old adage that “there’s safety in numbers” becomes the primary inciting principle. Persons in groups exhibit levels of “courage” (a.k.a., daring, audacity, and nerve) that individual cannot do.
Consider the linkage between persons gathering in large groups and the European Holocaust:
First came the institution-generated propaganda which was taught to large groups, then came the slaughter of 12,000,000 people in concentration camps and the 85 million killed in the war effort required to stop the Nazis.
Research in 2021 showed that incidents of white supremacist propaganda hit an all-time high in 2020, according to a new report from the Anti-Defamation League's Center on Extremism, which has tracked racist propaganda for decades.
At least 30 different white supremacist groups distributed flyers, put up posters or wrote racist graffiti in public and private spaces last year, the report says. The messaging varied from overt neo-Nazi propaganda to coded language that disguised white supremacist messaging inside expressions of “patriotism” and “nationalism.”
Three large organizations / institutions were responsible for more than 90% of the propaganda incidents. The most active group by far was the Texas-based Patriot Front, headed by white supremacist Thomas Rousseau, which was behind 4,105 of the incidents. Patriot Front masks its racism in vague phrases like “America First” and “Reclaim America,” but the group's official manifesto makes its white supremacist goals clear.
Carlin warned that the most respected institutions and groups in the U.S. and around the globe were the very ones making more false promises and exaggerated claims than any others.
