IF ONLY THREE HOURS OF MANIFESTATION REMAIN: The “Final” Talks of Floyd
The Direct Path, Nisargan, Non-Duality Pointers Offered in Two Sets of “Final Talks”
You now have several options regarding what could be deemed “the central elements that are at the core of” the Direct Path, Nisargan, non-duality teachings: you can consider the topics discussed in Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj’s final talks; the pointers offered in the “final” talks offered in this series; the pointers included in both sets; or neither.
For those that have read the transcripts of his sessions with visitors to his loft and were awake enough to understand
(1) how he initially worked with those on “the path”
and
(2) how the versions of the Ultimate Medicine which he offered changed over the years and went through three iterations total
and
(3) how his version of “the path” changed from having seven steps to having only four steps
are aware of the fact that he was not contradicting himself but was changing his message after having seen what was working and what was not.
[Christians who have written here over the years and claimed that Maharaj's talks should be discarded and he should never be heard of again as a result of his “contradictions.”
To those, I suggested that they might check the messages offered by Yeshu’a (“Jesus”) and note how his message changed from a Torah-based, organized-religion, Jewish message to a non-dual, no organized religion message in the final days of that manifestation.]
As for #1 above, the approach he used was to allow a visitor to speak for awhile or ask questions for awhile in order to determine where on the path that seeker was. Then, Maharaj tailored his pointers in a manner intended to guide the seeker to the next step.
For example, were a seeker stuck at the third step and was playing the role of “The Spiritual Giant” to the max, then Maharaj’s pointers would focus on shifting the seeker to the fourth step and returning to “The Child Ignorance Stage” or “The Child No-Knowing State” when children have zero concepts and no beliefs and live free of being influenced by all of the nonsense which children will soon be exposed to by their family members, by other relatives, by their community, by their schools and teachers, by their government and political leaders, by their religious leaders, etc.
As for #2 above, the first version of the Ultimate Medicine which Maharaj offered was a religious / non-dual compounded version of the Medicine. He would come to see that that version was totally ineffective at addressing the problems which come with the Ultimate Sickness. His audience was local.
The second version of the Ultimate Medicine which Maharaj offered was a spiritual / non-dual compounded version of the Medicine because his audience became dominated by an international crowd of spiritual giants who showed up after reading the transcripts of his talks collected in the book I AM THAT, published in 1973.
He offered spirituality-based pointers as a result of the pressure exerted by the international crowd. He would come to see that that version was totally ineffective at addressing the problems which come with the Ultimate Sickness and would advise:
“Stop reading I AM THAT and listen to my later talks.” He said that those talks in I AM THAT were for that time only and not applicable now.
the third version of the Ultimate Medicine which Maharaj offered was a psychology / non-dual compounded version of the Medicine.
He would come to see that the problem centers in the human mind and that the third version was more effective at addressing the “ignorance and stupidity and insanity-based” problems which come with the Ultimate Sickness as a result of ignorant and stupid and insane programming, conditioning, acculturation, domestication, brainwashing, and indoctrination.
That third version encouraged use of the brain while eliminating the influence of a nonsense-filled mind.
By his own admission, his words during the “religious” and “spiritual” years were not rooted in the pure, universal consciousness but were rooted in what he had been taught by his guru and what he had heard in his community.
Thus the use of a Hindu / non-dual version of the Ultimate Medicine which he had prescribed for his early visitors and he would also eventually abandon the use of a spiritual / non-dual version of the Ultimate Medicine which he prescribed when his Western audiences grew in numbers.
Both of those versions were replaced by a psychological / non-dual version of the Medicine after he came to understand that the Ultimate Sickness is a mental sickness because the seat of the Sickness is in the mind.
By the late 1970's and early 1980's, he was speaking more succinctly. His terse talks focused on the root of the Sickness - the mind - as he explained why the only viable method for treating the Sickness involved being freed from the mind.
His words by that point were coming via the pure universal consciousness and his Nisarga Yoga message prevailed as he encouraged visitors to “just give up spirituality and abide naturally.”
So that final understanding of the fact that the Sickness is a mental sickness led him eventually to advise seekers to
stop reading I AM THAT,
stop with all their religious and spiritual seeking,
address the mind problem which is at the root of the Ultimate Sickness,
be freed from the learned ignorance that was taught and from the insanity which was imposed from outside (via parental and societal influences),
stop abiding unnaturally,
stop trying to abide supernaturally (magically, spiritually, etc.)
and then
just abide naturally, the way that every living thing on the planet abides except for programmed and conditioned humans.
Such was the nature of his later talks which came to an end on Wednesday, 9 September 1981, and such were the changes which brought the critics out in full force.
So what did he emphasize later on?
THE POINTERS OFFERED IN SRI NISARGADATTA MAHARAJ’S FINAL TALKS
1.
All relative problems are rooted in the mind and in personality.
2. See the illusion that all things relative are.
3. Understand “the awareness which is not aware of” and how that
awareness-energy temporarily manifests as conscious-energy.
4. See the falsity of all things thought to be personal.
5. Understand that the relative continues post-Realization but with Reality
having been overlaid upon it.
6. Accept the uselessness of knowledge (a.k.a., learned ignorance).
7. Stabilize in Reality and Truth.
8. Understand what the Ultimate Sickness is and what the Ultimate Medicine is
that can treat it.
9. Transcend body, mind, and personality identification and understand that it
is impersonal consciousness that continues for the remainder of the
post-Realization manifestation.
10. Understand that Realization cannot happen unless one transitions
personality-based fears and desires (which also requires the abandonment of all
religious and / or spiritual personas that have been assumed).
11. See that the love of “knowledge” is based in egotism and then allow all
knowledge to go into liquidation.
12. Realize that the end of the manifestation of the conscious-energy is also
the end of bondage.
13. Know the nothingness.
14. Be unconcerned about finding the answer to “Who am I?” and find the answer
to “Who / What am I not?”
15. Abide with dignity and take mahasamadhi with dignity.
