THERE
IS NO IDENTIFIABLE, SINGLE CAUSE OF ANYTHING - THERE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A CHAIN OF
CAUSATION
To understand accurately the chains of causation, and then to find a relative means for addressing relative issues, one must first abandon all magical / supernatural / religious / spiritual thinking, including thoughts about . . .
“God as a
single causer” or “Satan as a
single causer” or thoughts about “an angry God that uses destructive events to
send messages” or thoughts about “who is a pagan or infidel and who is not” or thoughts about the duality of “good vs. evil” or thoughts about “immorality”
and “sin.”
In terms of the insanity which Maharaj spoke of (and which - in some of its
forms - can be treated at times with the Ultimate Medicine), the cause of that
condition actually involves a chain of causation.
In terms of contributing factors to insanity, there is a debate about the role
that a genetic component might play and a debate regarding chemical vs.
environmental influences.
Non-duality takes no stance in either of those
debates; on the other hand, non-duality does address a major contributor to
insanity, namely, personality.
Maharaj never discussed a relative problem unless he could offer a solution, so
the fact that he discussed such sicknesses as “ignorance” and “stupidity” and “insanity”
evidences the fact that - in some cases - the non-duality understanding
(a.k.a., the Ultimate Medicine) can provide a solution for those relative
problems.
At the core of the non-dual message is an invitation to be free of personality,
and that alone is a step toward freedom from some forms of insanity. Why?
A
personality-free condition means a condition that is free of personality
disorders and that is free from the effects of personality disorders (which
leads to being free from the effects of disintegrated-personality-generated
neuroses and psychoses).
To review: personality forms early on as a coping mechanism that is used by
children who are trying to function and survive in a dysfunctional milieu. If
there is no dysfunctional milieu, there will be no formation of personality /
personalities.
But personalities are always forming, so there is always a dysfunctional
environment (actually, many dysfunctional environments) on this planet ... in
the home, in society, in business, in religion, in government, ad infinitum.
A
dysfunctional environment - to one degree or another - is the new “abnormal
norm” in which every child is raised.
The term referencing insanity “in some of its forms” refers to the fact that
insanity manifests along a continuum through several levels, ranging from “a
somewhat healthy psyche” early on to several degrees of “average levels of
psychic health” to several levels of “an unhealthy psyche.”
A child arrives in a “blank tablet” condition. What parents and relatives and
neighbors and religious and / or spiritual persons and leaders write and
imprint on that tablet - along with the kinds of relative experiences that
affect children and teens - will determine the level of psychic health that
manifests.
In some cases, the non-duality teachings can shift seekers to one of the higher
levels of psychic health referenced above; in some cases, trained professionals
will be required if such a shift is to happen; but with most persons on the
planet, the clean tablet is made filthy with consciousness blocking nonsense
and various levels of deterioration will happen . . . and worsen as time
passes.
Some have actually delineated nine levels of psychic deterioration as
personality adoption and assumption brings certain levels of personality
disorders that begin to move one from a fairly healthy psychic state to various
levels of suffering from more severe personality disorders, then to a condition
of less psychic health.
Then they move
to identifying states of near-total disintegration where persons in the most
severe stages of mental and emotional disintegration are suffering from the
effects of severe personality disorders that can eventually generate neuroses
and psychoses.
Some personality types at that most extreme point of psychic deterioration will
retreat, isolate, run away, or commit suicide while others types will take on
the traits of a total sociopath or murderous psychopath.
If the Ultimate
Medicine is to have any effect on the Ultimate Sickness, it must usually be
administered at some of those earlier stages where there is still some modicum
of what could be deemed “at least average psychic health.”
Genetic factors or chemical factors notwithstanding, in most cases the problem
of insanity is rooted in personality, personality disorders, psychic
disintegration, and personality disorders collapsing into severe mental and
emotional disorders and neuroses and psychoses.
And that is why Maharaj and other sages for ages have invited persons to
abandon all personality and the role-playing and the assumption of
false-identities. Maharaj discussed “ignorance” and “stupidity” and “insanity”
because they were elements of the Ultimate Sickness that can be addressed - at
least in certain early stages - with the Ultimate Medicine.
Non-duality
is about addressing some levels of insanity and freeing seekers of the effects;
insanity that is ignored or that does not register as insanity is actually
about the embracing of dualities (at least until it reaches a state that
results in a disconnection with one’s immediate surroundings or a state of
severe detachment from physical and mental experiences as happened with
Mary).
While non-duality dismisses the validity of all dualistic pairing including “good
vs. evil,” it also ignores many of the typical definitions of “insanity.”
Non-duality
guides leave it to the courts to deal with defining and debating “impaired by a
mental disease or defect at the time of any given act” and “cognitive insanity”
and “volitional insanity” and “irresistible impulse” and “mental diseases or
defects that render persons incapable of controlling their actions” and “mental
incompetency.”
Instead, at the root of duality-based insanity is unchecked arrogance; belief
in hierarchies and a desire to rise in whichever ones are deemed significant; a
lack of awareness of the Oneness; a belief in the concepts of “two-ness” and “multiplicity”
which in turn support a “me vs. all others” mentality;
unconstrained attachment to ego and egotism; and a level of preoccupation with
self and self-ish-ness and self-centered that preempts anything in the relative
that might be even remotely labeled as “social skills” (known among
professionals as the Antisocial Personality Disorder).
[Note: at one point, a child had to spend fifteen years or more in a
dysfunctional family to reach that point; now, some psychotherapists have
shared that they are diagnosing seven and eight-year-olds with that
disorder.]
To continue: the type and level of insanity that non-duality teachers are
willing to address is the type that is rooted in duality and self-interest
(which is what all insanity is about until one reaches the level that Mary
reached four decades ago when she was admitted to a mental healthcare
facility).
Here, the discussion having moved beyond the bogus, duality-based concept of “evil,”
the focus is on certain levels of insanity that can still be addressed by the
teachings (which as far as nisargan or realized non-dualists are concerned does
not refer to the relative condition or state of being “seriously mentally ill”
or “totally mad” as much as it refers to being “extremely foolish or irrational”).
Why? Because “serious mental illness” and / or “total madness” cannot be
addressed by the Ultimate Medicine that nisargan or realized non-dualists can
offer;
however,
it is possible that the Ultimate Medicine might be able to address extreme
foolishness or irrationality or some levels of insanity if the Ultimate Sickness
is treated before personality disorders reach the lower levels of psychic
health.
[Generally, the intervention must happen before “Level 5” is reached - see
below for an example of “Level 5” - yet there have been cases of those who have
come this way that reached the understanding even though their personality
disintegration had reached even lower levels.]
What does psychic health look like in contrast to average or unhealthy psychic
health as one begins to disintegrate?
Next there will be offered an example from the Enneagram Institute which shows what happens as psychic disintegration moves through the nine levels. The particular explanation will apply to a Personality Type Eight. More on that tomorrow.
