LIBERATION (Attaining Freedom from Personality via Realization)
“After the information given to you by the mother, that you are a boy or girl, all your further acquisitions [false identities] are by hearsay.”
--Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
The Impact of Abiding As a Personality Type Three or Type Four On The Relative Existence
Of all the personality types, none put up that false front or false image more than the type being discussed now. The basic fear and the basic desire of Personality Type Three - “The Performer / Achiever” - will now be discussed. Russ Hudson pointed out the following about Personality Type Threes:
BASIC FEAR AND BASIC DESIRE
The Type Three’s BASIC FEAR is the fear of being worthless
The Type Three’s BASIC DESIRE is to feel valuable
Because they fear that “the way they really are” makes them worthless, Threes above all else engage in (1) “image-building” and in (2) seeking an audience to display that image and thereby receive praise or positive feedback.
When Type Three Performers / Achievers act or sing or perform or accomplish, they are seeking the applause or praise that their personality desires. Then, in an act of self-delusion, they take the applause or praise as a sign that they are truly loved and therefore valued and worth something.
A Three will, therefore, do all within her / his ability to create and maintain what they take to be a “positive” image. "Style over substance" is the hallmark of these persons trapped in their love of their relative world existence, identified as they are with their physical bodies and their "good looks" and thus having little chance of ever understanding the Absolute.
These personas lose contact with the True Self, with reality, far more than most other types. They suffer from distortion, from faulty perception, and from their inability to differentiate between what is true and what is false . . . between what is real and what is unreal.
They will literally live out
their lie throughout their relative existence if they do not Realize, believing
all along that their false image really defines who they are and never having
the slightest clue about Who What They Truly Are.
They become susceptible, if exposed to religious or spiritual teachings, to adopting with a vengeance the false personas that are generated by religious or spiritual beliefs and concepts and dogma.
Ironically, even as they proclaim to love, they are the most capable of hating when they think they are not getting enough honor or respect or praise.
Their need for praise is limitless, but since they cannot get limitless praise, they develop deep resentments and anger. To maintain their image of being wonderful and charming, however, they suppress that anger and rage builds within.
The result is a continual series of explosive, raging episodes through their lives. Eventually, if they adopt a “Religious Giant” or “Spiritual Giant” persona, they come to believe that they are perfect; therefore, they fail to see any need to look within; thus, they will typically never see the defects that characterize their personality type.
They are so capable of hating that they can become quite capable of destroying anything that they think is interfering with their two, primary preoccupations: image-building and image-maintenance.
Few are as invested as Threes are in creating false selves, in adopting false identities as definitions of “self,” and with ruthlessly destroying anyone or anything that interferes with their desire to be the epitome of what their culture considers “attractive,” “good,” and “valuable.”
(Note: If you study the enneagram, you see that Threes are part of the "Type 3-6-9 triangle," so those other two types can display the same type behavior as a Three. Some estimates are that 80% or more of the population of Aryan nations such as Germany, Austria, Great Britain and the U.S. are either Threes or persons inside the 3-6-9 triangle who behave as Threes behave.)
Why Personality Type Three Interrupts Happiness
That desire to be the epitome of what their culture considers “attractive,” “good,” and “valuable” results in a never-ending drive to be more, to be better, to be better than, and to be perceived as “the best.”
Such egotistical pursuits place them in a competitive mode and drive Threes to feel they are being challenged or threatened in most situations. They demand the spotlight and resent people and situations that force them to share the spotlight.
In their effort to look perfect and to say the perfect thing in each case and to appear to be the best, the result is an inordinate fear of failure and a consequent need to exploit and control or manipulate in their effort to maintain their image and their sense of superiority.
They become charming actors, performers who are always “on stage” or who are in need of finding an audience if an audience is missing. In their effort to stay in the spotlight, they become jealous, vindictive, deceptive, narcissistic, vain, and self-righteous.
They become obsessed with being the center of attention and receiving crowd approval in order to believe that they really are “OK.” They project their personality defects onto others and then do all that is possible to destroy other persons who evidence the Three's own personality traits and phony personas.
On some level, they really hate their false self, even as they work so diligently to create it and to maintain it. (That is the typical discontinuity that exists for all persons identified with the body-mind-personality triad, and that is the reason to see these influences that personality has on the relative existence and then discard identification with personas.)
Threes will appear to be the most charming among the nine types, and though they are the opposite at their core, their use of denial results in their believing their own lies.
Far from being truly charming, they can say the vilest, most hurtful things, can spin their failures into success stories in an instant, and can literally kill or at least wish people dead when angered over not receiving the degree of honor that they think they deserve or when someone questions them or exposes their faults.
[As for “kill or wish dead,” I had a Three in my life who moved more and more deeply into her role of “The Super Religious One” and “The Spiritual Giant” after she started working in a church. Tie money into everything else that personality identification brings and what results is a “super bond" with persons' assumed identities. After mistaking what my my non-dual understanding was (which was also her “savior's” eventual understanding), she declared that I was what her church hated, telling me that I had become a “New Age Agent of Satan.” She subsequently admitted that she had been praying to God for a year that he would kill me; thus, she introduced me to a religious belief I had not heard in a long time, namely, that her God can supposedly be contracted to serve as a hit man / Hit-God, Mafia-style. In reviewing the Jewish part of her Bible, focusing on the Old Testament part, the God there did engage in a lot of killing before bringing a flood which resulted in mass murder / genocide.]
“Isn’t all that Three-driven stuff above just relative existence stuff?” it has been asked. Of course. It’s always the “relative existence stuff” that must first be seen in order to realize what must be discarded. Only then can the “absolute stuff” can - though it need not be - understood.
Freedom from Personality Type Three Effects Via Realization
Along with realization comes authenticity as images are seen to be images and nothing more. With realization, honesty replaces the lie that the relative existence of most Type Threes eventually becomes. The distorted thinking and twisted perspectives that prevented the manifestation of happiness disappear.
That said, with the degree of attachment that Threes have to image, few will ever see all of the lies that must be seen before the truth can explode into consciousness. Again, the justification for the teachings to invite protégés to recognize the influences of personality on relativistic behavior and to then be free of it should be clear.
The following pointer was offered in response to a question regarding personality-driven fears and desires: “ . . . Fear and desire are the sources of anger, and anger is the source of all hostility. Hostility becomes the source of all harm,” relatively speaking, of course.
To be free of the anxiety of fears as well as the frustration of unmet desires, one must be free of identification with personality.
Next, the basic fear and the basic desire of Personality Type Four - “The Romantic / Individualist” - will be discussed. Russ Hudson pointed out the following about Personality Type Fours:
BASIC FEAR AND BASIC DESIRE
The Type Four’s BASIC FEAR is the fear of having no identity
The Type Four’s BASIC DESIRE is to find The Authentic Self
The Impact of the Personality Type Four on The Relative Existence
In their need to understand themselves, Fours developed a related desire to be understood by others. Since most “others” do not understand themselves, how could they ever understand the Fours?
They won’t, so the Four's frustrated desire to find “Self” and to be understood leaves him / her feeling depressed . . . yet stubborn about continuing to try to have those desires met.
The result is that, eventually, Fours tend to withdraw and to isolate and to become depressed as they remain misunderstood and as they fail to find the answer to "Who Am I, Really?”
Why Personality Type Four Interrupts Happiness
Because of their frustrations, Fours can eventually suffer dark moods, a variety of perceived hurts, the angst of unmet expectations, a constant fear of abandonment as a result of not being understood, and an uncomfortable sensation of longing as a result of knowing that “something is missing” but not having a clue what that is.
In non-dual terms, the desire of the pre-realization Type Four could be described as “an inner yearning to find the answer to “Who or What am I?” (or, if further along the “path,” to find out what THAT is which is actually beyond any “self-ness” or Self-ness.”)
Yet all yearning, wanting, and desiring interrupt any opportunity for consistent happiness to happen in the relative existence.
Next, by focusing on their “quest,” Fours generate relative-existence problems as a result of their self-absorption. They obsess on finding the answer to “Who am I?” which often prevents their asking, “Also, what about you?”
Fours, since they disintegrate to the Type Two personality if stressed or pious, can behave as a Two and become jealous, self-righteous, and critical or can feel hurt as a result of feeling “rejected.”
Their pre-realization state leaves them frustrated as they
know that they cannot answer accurately the question “Who What Am I,
Really?”
That leaves them searching but not finding, and that - in turn - leaves them dark, moody, empty, resentful, and longing. Depression and withdrawal and isolation often follow.
Freedom from Personality Type Four Effects Via Realization
Some claim that Fours have an advantage in moving along the “path” to realization because of their innate drive to search for an authentic identity and to uncover what “self” is not and what “Self” is. If they succeed in their quest and attain full realization, they can live out an AS IF existence with greater ease than most . . . the silence, the solitude, and the lack of need being quite comfortable for Fours, relatively speaking.
Post-realization, the earlier drive to find themselves ends, so the basic, unmet desire ends and the basic, illusory fear disappears as they understand their “true identity,” namely, THAT.
For the remainder of the manifestation, then, the AS IF existence of realized Fours is no longer driven by personality but functions naturally under the auspices of the intuitive sense.
The inner resource and the natural drives move “realized Fours” through the remainder of their manifestation, as happens with all types . . . post-realization. Learned ignorance and supernatural thinking disappear and natural living begins.
Always having been interested in their feelings - but too often driven by their emotions when not realized - the realized Fours can witness their feelings as they rise and fall but can be free of the emotional intoxication that identification with body and mind and personality had generated in their pre-realization days.
As opposed to the isolation that was previously experienced - along with its misery and self-absorption - both the sense of feeling separated and the sensation of experiencing the aloneness end as the all-oneness is understood after realization.
Though seclusion no longer happens unconsciously, solitude does happen, consciously. Then, the silence of private periods of tranquility can be enjoyed with peace as opposed to earlier times of withdrawal that were marked with anxiety or depression.
The same outcome awaits all who would be free of the influence of personality and who discard all belief in their assigned or assumed personas, their false identities, their roles.
To be continued.
Please enter into the silence of contemplation.
