THE DUALITY OF PURITANISM VS. WILDNESS WHICH LEADS HUMANS TO BE “UNSTABLE IN ALL WAYS”
“First of all you identify something as being good or bad for yourself. Then, in an effort to acquire good or to get rid of the bad, you have invented a God. Then you worship such a God and . . . you pray to that God for something good to happen to you.”

(To continue with the discussion of removing the influence of the superego / the puritanical fanatic / the judgmental mother)
We have seen the enticements and attractions and “benefits” used as “hooks” by religions and spiritual groups and cults to draw and hold persons. To clarify and simplify, let’s see what is at the core of “the godly person” / God relationship.
Maharaj made clear that, as is the case with most relationships, the central, fundamental part in every godly person / God relationship is this: it’s totally transactional. It has been noted that transactional relationships are often business relationships or partnerships of give and take. Spot on.
Thus, Maharaj said: “First of all you identify something as being good or bad for yourself. Then, in an effort to acquire good or to get rid of the bad, you have invented a God. Then you worship such a God and . . . you pray to that God for something good to happen to you.”
GREED AND AVARICE
That kind of relationship, like so many other kinds, are often based in the greed and avarice of both partners who are participating in a give-get dance. The godly and god’s supposed representatives on earth (who are in charge of running “God’s business”) are both seeking the same thing:
one is seeking from god and the other is targeting “the godly seekers” and seeking to get as much from them as possible, be it time, service, and / or, especially, money.
So that includes . . .
all parties involved in the transaction who have (1) a desire for selfish, self-centered payoffs and who are dealing with (2) the promise of rewards and the promise of avoiding punishment and who (3) want the power / Power to control every aspect of their relative existence and who (4) want the promise of freedom from fear and from unmet desires.
And that greed and wanting and desiring is linked to the next category of . . .

That includes . . .
(5) the monkey see, monkey do syndrome which is often used in an effort to gain acceptance and approval from another through mimicking and modeling another and (6) presenting an image which can possibly bring a payoff and
(7) being seen as being good and not bad which might bring a payoff and (8) and gaining acceptance by uniting with the godly ones who believe that you are all different-from and therefore better-than “the other” (thus fostering unchecked arrogance that might also lead to a payoff).
THE RELATIVE PROBLEMS GENERATED BY ENTERING INTO TRANSACTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
It has been noted that “Over time, transactional relationships tend to breed resentment. No one likes to feel used.”
Too, “The relationship may lack true interest from one or both parties if they are solely focused on obtaining a reward.”
Also, exchanges in friendships and intimate relationships relate less to easily definable tasks and activities and more to meeting another’s underlying psychological needs.”
ALERT! If you are in any relationship (be it with a god or a “godly institution or group” or at work or with a mate, etc.) in which you have assumed the job of “trying to meet someone’s underlying psychological needs,” Now, you are already doomed to fail at that mission. It’s just a matter of time.
To that point - and to your chagrin - that failure will not happen immediately and thereby give you a speedy end to your frustration. No, the end will usually come only after a way-too-long period of frustration and anger and aggravation and exasperation.
That is guaranteed when persons believe they can single-handedly resolve the manifestation of a host of personality defects and neuroses and psychoses which come when they ignore the red flags and other warning signs and enter into a transactional relationship with someone who thinks you will be able to fulfill all of their greed-based desires.
Playing the role of “the Rescuer” requires that you cross paths with one in need of rescuing and enter into a relationship (which will be guaranteed to be transactional).
I remember as a child trying to rescue a hawk with a broken wing which had fallen into our backyard.
My efforts were interrupted when I had to postpone my rescue and allow my mother to drive me to the emergency room for stitches. The hawk’s wing might have been broken but its beak was working just fine.
Twos most often attract “broken wing” types and the needy and users, their personality identification as “The Super Helper” or “The Super Savior” or “The Rescuer” being totally dependent on a willing, co-dependent player of the counterpart role which allows “helping” and “rescuing” to happen.
The subconscious motives of Helpers, therefore, reinforce identification with the false
selves / roles they assume. They seldom realize because they are dependent upon
- and co-dependent with - those “broken wing” types and the needy and user types.
Moreover, their agenda also blocks others from ever becoming totally
independent and free.
A Type Two female said:
“All of my jobs revolved around helping people. I was a teacher who wanted
to be sensitive to children and help them get off to a good start. I was a
religious education director in a number of parishes. I thought that if people
learned about the spiritual life, they’d be happier. The most important part of
my life is my spiritual life. I was in a religious community for ten years. I
married a former priest, and we both have our spirituality as the basis of our
life together.”
How sweet, huh?
Of such types, the Enneagram Institute notes: “Twos’ inner development may
be limited by their “shadow side” - pride, self-deception, the tendency to
become over-involved in the lives of others, and the tendency to manipulate
others to get their own emotional needs met”
and
“Average to unhealthy Twos seek validation of their worth by obeying their
superego’s demands to sacrifice themselves for others. They believe they must
always put others first and be loving and unselfish if they want to get ‘love.’
The problem is that ‘putting others first’ makes Twos secretly angry and
resentful, feelings which they work hard to repress or deny. Nevertheless, they
eventually erupt in various ways, disrupting Twos’ relationships and revealing
the inauthenticity of many of the average to unhealthy Two’s claims about
themselves and the depth of their ‘love’.”
That same scenario plays out constantly in religions, in step groups, in spiritual movements,
and in “self-help” groups, (as if “self-help” were a real possibility).
The relevant pointers from Maharaj include the following:
“The idea of responsibility is in your mind. You think there must be something
or somebody solely responsible for all that happens. There is a contradiction
between a multiple universe and a single cause. Either one or the other must be
false. Or both. As I see it, it is all day-dreaming”
and
“ . . . None can help you” (and you can help none) because “There are no
‘others’ to help”
and
“ . . . As to the people you want to help, they are in their respective worlds
for the sake of their desires; there is no way of helping them except through
their desires”
and
“To me there is no ‘me’, ‘no man’ and no giving. All this is merely a flicker
in the mind. I am infinite peace and silence in which nothing appears, for all
that appears - disappears. Nobody comes for help, nobody offers help, nobody
gets help. It is all but a display in consciousness”
and
“The only thing that can ‘help’ is to wake up from the dream”
and
“The only help worth giving is freeing from the need for further help.”
Again, therefore, the pointer offered earlier: Type Twos seldom realize because
they are dependent upon - and
co-dependent with - those “broken wing” types and the needy types and user
types. Moreover, their agenda also
blocks others from ever becoming totally independent and free.
Yet with Twos on a quest - as with so many other types on a quest - the “important
/ totally unimportant” understanding seldom comes. As a result, peace seldom
comes, either.
As for the godly / God transactional relationship, it can be seen above that it is typically rooted in selfishness and greed and desiring, which is the stuff of toxic relationships and which is as far removed from the stuff of healthy relationships as possible (relatively speaking).
