FREEDOM FROM INSTABILITY AND SHIFTING "A dual-minded person is unstable in all ways." --Yeshu'a Duality always results in instability and shifting. To continue: From another visitor: “Teachers sometimes speak of ‘impressions.’ Are there not some impressions that are real or truthful in basis?” The reply: “First, please forget ‘teachers.’ Search by using the guidance offered by ‘un-teachers’ and seek in the company of ‘unlearners’.” But yes. There are two such impressions. They will be discussed during this series of satsangs, but the ‘time’ and ‘memories’ discussion will be completed first.’ One result of discarding your belief in the concepts of “time” and “memories” is that emotional intoxication and instability - which are rooted in ‘time and memory’ distortions and which inspire attachment - will end. Will non-attachment (and the discarding of all prior attachments) prevent joy or happiness or contentment from happening? Of course not. It is the means by which joy can happen with consistency, or the means by which whatever is happening can be witnessed without emotional intoxication, or the means by which a position of neutrality can be maintained in spite of the surrounding disorder and insanity which mark the relative existence. Further, realization will prevent the erroneous perception of “past distortions” as “current truth,” eliminating the emotional intoxication which comes when ego-states seem to be impacted by delusions about “past” events. More to the point, how could you possibly have a “past” when the flawed memories of that “past” were believed to have taken place in “this world” and were believed to have involved “other persons” in “this world”? You are not in the world, and you have never been in the world. To the contrary, the world is in you, specifically, in your “mind.” If what anyone takes to be “this world” is actually nothing more than a composite of millions of mirages that have been erroneously taken to be real, then “this world” can ultimately be nothing more than a mirage as well . . . all a product of imaginings generated by the warped or blocked consciousness. And if you are unhappy or angry or discontent as a result of the memory of “someone” and what he / she did, understand that persons are also nothing more than a figment of that same imagination - and of flawed perceiving - which have resulted in the concept of “this world.” Have there not been many instances when you thought you knew certain persons, only to find out that you did not know them at all, relatively speaking? You accepted the image they projected as being real and genuine; you formed your own image of them; and they clung privately to their “self”-image that they took to be real. Images . . . images . . . images. And though they were all phony, they all combined to form “a false image your mind.” And in the absence of full realization, “your mind” will sustain the false belief in “them” and “the world you and they live in.” And if "you" are experiencing unhappiness, it is because the memory-sections of the brain stored those false beliefs and false images, and now current events are triggering false memories and flawed perceptions. You have formed co-dependencies with false memories and are allowing false beliefs and concepts to control your emotions. If you are mourning some perceived “loss,” the case is (speaking absolutely) that you cannot actually be missing “that” or “them”; you might, however, be missing what you thought “it” or “they” were. If so, mirages are determining your moods. Depression might be situational or organic. Consider the insanity of being immobilized by depression that is not rooted in organic factors but that is rooted in a false “memory” about a mirage instead. Consider this as well: can a speck of energy “miss” a speck of energy? Consciousness cannot “have” anything and cannot “lose” anything. The consciousness can merely perceive accurately . . . or inaccurately. Misery and suffering are rooted in the warped perceiving that happens if the consciousness has been blocked in the way that “the now-required journey” is really all about. Only if that “journey” is completed can “clear seeing” happen. So “mood swings” and “shifts from happiness to unhappiness” are all rooted in faulty perceptions, all based in concepts which are always dualistic (and therefore always open to debate regarding whether something is “good” or “bad”), and are all supported by distortions called “memories” that are merely remembrances of mirages. A visitor asked, “What do you mean by situational vs. organic depression? I am wondering if that might apply to me?” The reply: First, consider this disclaimer: no realized non-dualist would suggest that she / he has a monopoly on treating depression or mood swings or personality disorders. Much of the suffering on the planet is rooted in body-mind-personality identification, but other contributing factors certainly exist, factors which cannot be addressed completely by non-dual pointers. Some depression might be situational and can be natural. For example, during the years spent in the forest, various animals were seen to be “grieving” as they inspected the fallen remains of a companion or an offspring. Here's an example: One spring, a buck and doe were observed while grazing in one of their regular feeding spots. Later in the fall, they were seen on several occasions while mating; then, at the beginning of the following summer, it was seen that a fawn had joined in their grazing sessions. In late August or early September, gunshots rang out near a creek. After following one of the trails that led toward the water, the following was witnessed: the fawn had been shot and had run some distance from the creek before falling. The doe and the buck both seemed to be smelling it and nudging it, trying to encourage it to rise and run, but they eventually realized it was not going to happen. They stood still and witnessed. Both spent some time there involved in what was clearly an instance of “situational depression.” Their demeanor left no doubt that feelings were arising. Suddenly, two boys - hunting out of season - began making a great deal of noise as they approached. It was seen that the feeling of grief being experienced by the deer was being replaced by a feeling of fear. They were torn, moving away from the fallen animal for a moment, then returning for a few moments in a final effort to check on the fawn. Finally, the two boys appeared, but a shout went out at them regarding out-of-season hunting. They ran back toward the creek and the buck and doe bounded deeper into the forest. Weeks later, both deer would be seen to have returned to their regular, daily routine . . . grazing in one particular clearing during the morning hours or in another favorite feeding area in the afternoon. Their behavior with the fawn was an example of situational depression, and people can experience the same and behave the same . . . functioning, feeling, moving on. [Thus "floyd's" forest-dweller stage provided more understandings. For the full discussion of that stage and the others, see the book “The Ultimate Sickness,The Ultimate Medicine.”] The realized witness those feelings and do not deny them. They watch them rise and fall. The non-realized are driven by emotions into a state of emotional intoxication, and what began as situational depression might become a chronic condition, which is unnatural. For the sake of thoroughness, know also that on-going unhappiness or depression might be a result of a chemical imbalance in the body. Three very different body types exist among humans, and each requires a different food plan in order to optimize the functioning of organs. One-third of the people on the planet will thrive on a vegetarian food plan; one-third can thrive on a balanced food plan; but one-third will function poorly on a balanced plan or an all-vegetable food plan. They are actually committing “suicide-by-diet” if they follow a vegetable-only food plan. [For those who are eating only vegetables as part of their “spiritual journey,” only one-third of you are providing what your organs require for maximized functioning. Two-thirds will pay a physical, mental, and emotional price, relatively speaking, by following a food plan that is not appropriate for your body type. Also, there is no need to write to this author to defend your practice since such letters will be deleted rather than read. Instead of writing in protest, spend the time investigating the above and determining which food plan is best suited for your body type. In this discussion of mood swings and depression, understand that some instances are organic in basis.] Next, some who make contact during “the holiday season” in order to describe their misery may be suffering Seasonal Affective Disorder, triggered by being exposed to too little light during the winter months. It is estimated, however, that only 4-6% of the people on the planet fall into that group. On the other hand, it is known that nearly 99% on the planet are suffering from one or more personality disorders. With the odds being nearly twenty times greater that mood swings and unhappiness and suffering are the result of personality (rather than being situational or chemical or organic), the discussions here always begin with an invitation to sufferers to find “WHO” that is, which ego-state) they think is suffering and to abandon belief in the personas that are triggering misery. If that process brings no relief, then the other factors discussed above can all be addressed with health care professionals. So, to any who might experience depression during a particular “season”: If your efforts to stabilize via the realization process should fail, you might seek out advice from trained professionals and explore the situational-chemical-organic possibilities. And as has been noted in the past, if anyone is feeling suicidal during any particular season, he / she might consider reporting immediately to an emergency room at the nearest hospital and sharing those thoughts at the intake desk or calling a suicide hotline. That said, the satsang will continue by focusing on the depression and instability that is generated from personality, that is, from assuming false identities and allowing them to determine thoughts, words, and deeds. To be continued. Please enter into the silence of contemplation. |
