F.: Hello Patty. I say that truth cannot be spoken because truth cannot be spoken.
For a lie to exist and become an untruth that is believed to be truth on a widespread basis, a nonsensical thought—either in the form of a fanciful image or, later as word-thoughts—must arise. In the history of humankind, the earliest examples of nonsensical thoughts and nonsensical statements usually followed the occurrence of a natural event that was not understood by ignorant people.
(For example, the sun supposedly “rising and falling”; the sun supposedly disappearing during the day, either as a result of cloud formations or an eclipse; and people supposedly “being born” and supposedly “dying.”)
After that, since they did not understand the facts related to the event, persons tried to come up with some explanation for the event without having the facts to understand. Eventually, their explanations began to credit unseen powers or imaginary forces—powers or forces that were assigned personal attributes.
(That is why it has been noted on this site that no god created a man in god’s image but that man has created a god—or gods—in man’s image. Voilà…personal gods and/or personal goddesses.)
Next, for nonsense or lies to be accepted as truth, nonsensical thoughts must be put into words and the words must be heard and believed. Does the thought-word-deed continuum really apply in the relative?
Yes. The spoken lie begins with an erroneous thought that is spoken and then accepted as truth by an ignorant listener or by a listener who becomes programmed with learned ignorance.
The original lie began either (a) when someone thought he/she knew a truth, spoke it, it was heard, and ignorant people took it to be truth or (b) when someone knew something was a lie but expressed it as a truth in order to control or manipulate other people:
***There’s an angry god that is withholding rain that is needed for our crops. Having sex with a virgin would appease him. As god’s representative on earth, I shall have the sexual relations with her…for him. Also, gods like us to sacrifice for them, so this particular god will want us to kill that virgin. Furthermore, gods like us to commune with them regularly, so I’ll eat her heart and drink her blood and then pass both among the crowd for all to eat and drink…believing that it is this particular god’s body and blood we are consuming in this act of communion and being at “one.”
***The fact that the sun has been blacked out has happened because a god is angry.
***The reason for your child’s deformity (or your poverty…or a recent natural calamity...or being defeated by another tribe…or losing a child) is because you have displeased god.
The same kinds of nonsensical beliefs are spread today:
***Just take my word that they have weapons that can destroy us all, so they must be destroyed first.
***God allowed our buildings to be knocked down because of the preponderance of non-Christians and gays and feminists in our society.
***Buddha and Christ and Krishna were special and different because they were not conceived by natural means but by supernatural means instead. It is better to be conceived virginally than vaginally.
***The reason the hurricane struck that city is because the people there had a collective negative karma and an act of karmic balance was required to restore the balance of the universe. The destruction was a “positive thing” (in that a “negative thing” was eliminated).
In the process of spreading lies and fabricating nonsensical, supernatural explanations for natural events, dualistic ideas and concepts came about and were disseminated and believed to be truth: "positive vs. negative"; "good vs. bad"; "natural vs. supernatural"; "moral vs. immoral" as well as "special" and "different" and "better than" and "worse than."
Belief in a multiplicity rather than the unicity became the abnormal norm: "I am better than him because of my skin color"; "Our religious dogma is right and theirs is all wrong"; "Those of us who live in this region justifiably hate the ones who live in that region"; "Being intellectual is a bad thing, so we take pride in our lack of intellect...in our ignorance."
The more that people think and talk, the more it is that ignorance is spread.
So all lies originate as thoughts (consider that “mind-talk”), but belief in those lies can only become widespread if the silence is broken (via “mouth-talk”); therefore, the only way that you can find Truth is if the mouth and mind are totally silent.
The inability to differentiate true from false, then, is the providence of those who think and talk, and the most prolific sources of lies are those persons who think the most and talk the most. You might ask, “Well, what about satsang? Aren’t you the one talking and breaking the silence?”
When a Realized teacher is seemingly speaking, that is not the case. The consciousness speaks. Further, the so-called “Realized teacher” does not speak the truth and does not claim to speak the truth. Pointers toward the truth, not any actual truths, are being offered.
Thus, there is nothing offered in satsang that any seeker is asked to believe. Instead, all that is spoken is spoken not by a mouth and not by a mind but by the consciousness. And what the consciousness is inviting seekers to do is not to believe anything they hear when the consciousness speaks but to take consciousness-speak as a pointer toward the truth…not the truth itself.
For a time, consider all that you are not. For a time, consider questioning everything you have ever been told. But eventually, be rid of that accumulation of lies and concepts and ideas that is called “the mind” and make way for the truth to be realized.
