I AM THAT vs. “This Is Who I Think I Am”
Let’s pause to clarify the I AM THAT understanding:
Maharaj suggested to visitors to the loft that they find where they were in the hours or days or weeks prior to conception. There is so much nonsense involved with the beliefs about that notion.
Some believe they were with God, queued up and awaiting their assignment to a set of parents on planet earth. Supposedly, “sacred contracts” were in place to govern the process. BS. Talk about delusional beliefs about self and Self-ness.
Science has made clear that neither energy nor matter can be created, and what was and is or has been is - in the simplest sense - all energy-matter. Consciousness is nothing more than free-ranging conscious-energy, constantly moving and unrestricted or confined in a finite space and incapable of being involved with any conscious-of-ness if not manifested within a space.
Only if manifested in a space - whether that space is called a tree or a human - then only can conscious-of-ness happen. Consider the process of a seed developing into the beginning of what may become a huge oak tree.
Acorns exist on a tree and fall to the ground. A squirrel can gather those and bury them and will never remember where all the acorns were buried. Under certain conditions involving sunlight and water, those seeds remaining in the ground contain - among other things - conscious-energy.
What happens with the acorn from that point on is all spontaneous, controlled by nature and made possible by conscious-energy inside the acorn “guiding” each step of the process which can eventually result in the manifestation of an oak tree.
Compare that with the process of a “child” manifesting as a result of the exact same process. If an act of friction involving two humans results in an egg and a sperm cell uniting, and if the conditions are conductive to a fertilized eggs surviving and flourishing, then a process whereby plants cells can be converted into human cells begins.
The “guiding” principle of the process which can eventually result in the manifestation of a human “offspring” is the same. In no case - be it an oak or a human or anything else - is there any external or internal input which controls the automatic, spontaneously process.
Maharaj: “From the Absolute no-knowing state, spontaneously, this consciousness ‘I am’ has appeared. There is no reason, no cause.”
What happens with the plant seed and what happens with the human seed both happen as a result of the manifestation of conscious-energy functioning spontaneously and independently within a confined space.
The “parents-to-be” do nothing. The developing fetus does nothing. It all just happens as already existing energy-matter does not “create” anything but simply cycles already-existing elements etc. to form something of a particular shape which will vibrate at differing rates and generate what appears to be things which are supposedly “different” but are not. It’s all really just the same, just one thing. The only difference is the “appearance.”
The conscious-energy within the acorn and the conscious-energy within a seed which united with an egg determines everything that happens.
With humans, neither “parent” has to “do” anything as long as the mother-to-be for a nine-month period eats plant food or eats something that ate plants.
The fetus does not have to do anything to perpetuate the process, either. It will just happen, naturally, if all other conditions are normal.
This is explained on the internet: “Consciousness requires a sophisticated network of highly interconnected components . . . nerve cells. Its physical substrate, the thalamo-cortical complex that provides consciousness with its highly elaborate content, begins to be in place between the 24th and the 28 week of gestation.”
[Thus, it has been noted that “the limit of legal abortion at 22-24 weeks in most developed nations - the U.S. not included - makes sense.” It also makes sense that “pro-life” should apply equally to the fetus and to the pregnant human involved with that fetus, but that is not the case. Half in the U.S. consider the fetus only. A 10-year was raped and impregnated and her life would have been at risk had she not had an abortion. “Tough” concluded the Republican leaders in her home state of Ohio. In the U.S., more than 1000 girls 14 years or younger seek abortions each year. Many were raped in their homes. So it is.]
To continue: the human species would disappear forever if the process of elements and air and conscious-energy depended on a fetus having a conscious role in the process of development and having to take certain actions during the nine-month period of development. Same with the oak. Same with the “mother-to-be.”
Here is a conversation which has never happened and neither will:
“Father-to-be”: [Enters house at the end of the day, sees “mother-to-be”] “Wow, you look exhausted. What happened?
“Mother-to-be” [gruffly]: “What happened? I’ll tell you what happened! You don’t want some stupid kid, do you?!”
FTB: [Confused] “Uhhhh, not really.”
MTB: “Well I don’t either, and today was the day I had to make the brain. I’m exhausted! I worked my tail off to come up with the best brain ever! But it involved an entire day’s effort. So hell yeah I look exhausted!”
FTB: “Uhhhh, well thanks for taking care of that.” [Approaches her to offer a hug.]
MTB: “Get the hell away from me!! You’re the one that caused all of this to start with!!”
How fortunate that parental input is not required. No one is “making” anything. All is merely cycling, automatically, and all already existed.
Hungarian scientist Szent-Gyorgyi explained it this way: “What drives life is thus a little electric current, set up by the sunshine.”
There’s no such thing as “A spark of divinity.” There’s a spark on the sun which is at the heart of the process, whether the process is happening in the ground with an acorn or happening in a womb with a seed-fertilized egg.
So THAT refers to the components which are forever-present and which can be pulled into the process which results in the I AM which can result from those components being cycled.
Those components exist “in the wild.” They are “free-ranging, but if by random chance they become “pulled into a cycling process,” then the result can be the beginning of another temporarily-manifested something - that something being labeled as “a human, a tree, a fish, a bird,” whatever.
The summative statement of non-duality is “I AM THAT; I AM.” The THAT is what has always existed. The AM-ness occurs as a temporary manifestation which depends on the existence of the key, natural “ingredients” which exist and which have always existed.
Having always existed, no one or “One” created them. There is no such thing as “creation”; there is only the “cycling” of what has always existed.
“No creation” means “No Creator,” including an imaginary god and including imaginary “parents.”
So where were “you” in the hours or days or weeks before conception?
Well, it should be obvious now that there was no “you.” It should also be clear that there can be no “you” post-manifestation.
Humans are a composite unity, a triad of elements, air, and conscious-energy manifested within a space. At the time of mahasamadhi, (which some erroneously think involves “death”), the elements return to the universal pool of elements, the oxygen returns to the universal pool of air, and the conscious-energy returns to the universal pool of conscious-energy (a.k.a., THAT).
Those scattered elements and air and oxygen shall never meet again in the same space. There's no reincarnation. “No hell below us, above us, only sky.”
So there was no “you.” There were those natural, forever-present and now ever-present “ingredients” which were cycled and which resulted in a state of AM-ness which - in the case of humans - sets the stage for nonsensical programming and conditioning and domestication and acculturation and indoctrination and brainwashing which can lead to a belief in such false concepts as . . .
birth
death
gods and goddesses
gods
a god
and
which can lead to the assignment or assumption of tens of thousands of false identifications which will trigger the use of ego-defense mechanisms which, in turn, trigger a belief in “different-from-ment” and “better-than-ment” which triggers arrogance, conflict, wars, and the actions of controlling politicians and religious leaders and business leaders along with all of the other commonplace insanities with which the non-realized masses are entangled.
Maharaj: “First of all you identify something as being good or bad for yourself. Then, in an effort to acquire good or to get rid of the bad, you have invented a God. Then you worship such a God and . . . you pray to that God for something good to happen to you.”
Maharaj’s final take on god and spirituality:
“Forget spirituality.”
Follow your “normal inclinations.”
“Just give up spirituality.”
“I do not follow the spirituality of the masses.”
“Whatever spiritual things you aspire to know are all happening in this objective world, in the illusion. All this is happening in the objective world. All is dishonesty. There is no truth in this fraud.”
“I appeal to you with my folded hands: don’t get into this spirituality.”
“The sum total of my spirituality now is nothing. Even that word ‘nothing’ is not there, so there is no spirituality left.”
“When the birth is disproved, the great noble meaning of spirituality and the meaning of this world - everything - is disproved.”
“There is no such thing as spirituality; whatever is, is only this worldly life, in the five-elemental play.”
“Those who have apperceived my knowledge will not fall prey to the logic or spirituality expounded by others.”
“I got involved in spirituality, in the business of spirituality, [but] finally I lost that love of ‘the Self’ also. I have no more love for ‘the Self’.”
