15. Admit that the mind” - initially the seat of all ignorance - will also eventually become the guardian of all ignorance as well.
Listen to words coming from the minds and mouths of the most intelligent and knowledgeable people, as mentioned earlier, and if You are awake it will be obvious that . . .
(1) intelligence deters neither the accumulation nor the stubborn defense of entrenched ignorance and that (2) knowledge is most assuredly a detriment to being free of ignorant ideas and beliefs.
Persons will believe whatever supports their assumed ego-states, and any and all factual evidence that contradicts their beliefs will never penetrate the wall that was (a) originally a wall of deception but that also eventually becomes (b) a wall of self-deception.
That wall which blocks the light from ever shining upon the nonsensical beliefs of the non-realized will assure that they will remain in the darkness that protects their bogus ideas and fictional concepts from being exposed as falsehoods.
Of course, those nonsensical beliefs are not theirs at all but are, instead, ideas and concepts which they have merely heard expressed by like-”minded” and similarly programmed and conditioned persons whom they are merely quoting now after having adopted those beliefs as their own.
The wall of darkness and deceit and self-deceit is fortified with the blind acceptance of what one site visitor called “the prevailing consensual reality” (a.k.a., non-reality); therefore, politicians will take an absolute lie and repeat the lie if it can be used to demean members of a different party with opposing views;
the religious will take the most absurd claims that were dreamed up by ignorant men 5000 years ago and repeat their tales today as if they were fact (merely because some self-serving men wrote their supposedly-holy fiction on paper);
and the prejudiced will make assertions about the superiority of their country, their race, etc. and will refuse to consider any factual evidence to the contrary that disproves their unfounded contentions.
Why must that wall be torn down if one would be free and joyous? Because it is that wall, and the “mind” that it protects, which creates all chaos. Maharaj said, “There is no chaos in the world except the chaos which your mind creates.”
Of course that would have to be the case since it is the “mind” that supposedly creates “the world” in which persons believe they are seeing real chaos.
If you have not abandoned its content once and for all, then your “mind” is the root of the chaos you perceive and it will continue to reflect its chaos onto your screen of perceived reality (which is not Reality at all).
Why is the ignorance that inspires belief in the not-real so pervasive? Back from a trip that could as easily have been called “a retreat,” Advaitin Louise explained it this way:
Louise: “There was a clear insight on this trip, watching the view of nature from the Bazley verandah and reflecting on the words of Maharaj - that everything he knew about his “birth” was hearsay.
“It dawned on me that with the manifestation of consciousness via this form, there was simply the “view”; no birth of a ‘Louise’ at all. The story of the birth of an individual Louise who sees through two eyes, experiences, through the senses, etc, is complete hearsay - added on after the fact, painted like a veneer on this pre-existing view. Because the story ‘fits’ the prevailing consensual reality, it is seldom questioned.”
The reply: “Of course now we can add, ‘And everything that is thought to be “known” is hearsay too,’ yes?”
Thus the teaching that “witnessing is happening even though there is no witness involved.” So how to break down that wall referenced above?
16. Admit that no one (including seekers and non-seekers as well) can know what she / he does not know, and admit that what you think you know is nothing more nor less than learned ignorance.
Hence, the trap . . . the “Catch-22”: that which is required to be free of ego and egotism is the last thing that the ego and egotism would find acceptable. As seen earlier in the post, the last thing the ignorant are likely to admit is that they are wrong or that what they believe might not be true.
Additionally, to those seeking freedom from belief in lies via these teachings, must the following not also be considered:
if persons can become convinced that what they know is factual when what they know is not based in fact at all, then might that not also apply to those who have, via these teachings, discarded former beliefs but then adopted new beliefs . . . beliefs about Self-ness, about “An Infinite Self,” about “noble identities,” about a newly-assumed spiritual persona?
If the no-concept, non-dual, no-identity Reality is truly understood, then what is with this practice of adopting new and improved phenomenal identities and what is with this practice of claiming noumenal identities as well?
Should not the end result of truly understanding these teachings be the discarding of all concepts and ideas and beliefs and identities, including what some call their “Advaitin beliefs”?
17. Understand that there is no such thing as an “Advaitin belief.”
The pointers are only a series of consideration which point to what can be the eventual outcome of the understanding, that outcome being the complete understanding of the zero-concepts, zero-beliefs, zero-duality, zero-identity Reality.
If understood, these teachings lead to the end of beliefs, to total unlearning, to the No-Longer-Ignorant-State. They do not, however, lead to a knowing state.
The state of (1) abiding as THAT or the state for the few who complete the entire “journey” of (2) abiding as what preceded THAT (namely, The Nothingness . . . The Void) are both no-knowingness states.
As for that no-knowing nothingness, if you have a notion that de-accumulation can bring about a degree of bliss, consider what total de-accumulation could bring.
