“Two Tools That Can Assist with
the Restoration to Sanity: ‘The 180-Degree Rule’”
It was seen earlier that insane thoughts lead to insane words and that insane words lead to insane actions. The use of “The 180-Degree Rule” is a tool that can begin to dismantle that pattern as the restoration of sanity manifests in the reverse order, allowing objective seekers to see insane deeds and stop those; to see insane words and stop using those; and to see the insane thoughts that are behind their insane words and deeds.
Thus, the bondage of the “Gordian knot of insanity” which ties the non-realized
to the consequences of insane behaviors that result via the
thought-to-word-to-deed continuum is unraveled by moving out of that continuum
in reverse.
By becoming awake enough and aware enough and conscious enough to see the toll
that has been exacted by one’s insane deeds, then the use of the words that
inspired those deeds might stop and then the thoughts that drove the use of the
words that inspired destructive behaviors (relatively speaking) might
eventually be cast aside as well.
If realized fully, the no-concept, no-thought state preempts any chance for
insane words to be spoken, and the absence of insane thoughts and words
preempts insane deeds. So, “The 180-Degree Rule” is a tool that some have used
to begin “cutting the Gordian knot” - a legend-based metaphor for solving a
previously-unmanageable problem by use of a bold stroke.
With this method, seekers are invited to (A) look at every thought and then (B)
find what the 180-degree opposite of that thought would be and then (C) see if
the opposite might be more sane and more logical and more constructive, again,
relatively speaking.
IDEA: “I am going into work tomorrow and I’m going to tell the boss that he can
shove his job and that I quit.”
180-DEGREES OPPOSITE: I am not going to quit the job I have until I find
another job. Until then, I’ll do my work and keep my mouth shut.
That “bold stroke” - of looking objectively at one’s thoughts and words and
actions - will involve a willingness to question all that one has been taught,
all that one believes, all of the content of “the mind,” and the efficacy of
one’s past and present behavior patterns.
It will involve (1) finding a teacher that has traveled the going crazy-being
crazy-going sane “path” and then (2) setting aside egotism and the other
defense mechanisms that have been used to support one’s false identities and
distorted views, and then
(3)
being willing to allow that teacher to guide one along the “path” to realizing
all of the lies that have been thought to be true and then, and (4) realizing
truth, finally able to differentiate the true from the false and being dedicated
to recognizing the false and only seeking the true.
Therefore, the list continues, offering other examples of the way that the use
of “The 180-Degree Rule” can assist in the restoration of sanity if it is
applied to every deed and then eventually to every word - before any word is
spoken - and eventually to every thought until all distorted thinking ends.
The examples today include comments from persons who called or sent e-mails to
share something they deemed to be “profound” or were witnessed firsthand:
IDEA: “I have been asked to be my church’s representative, working with the
council of churches in the Houston area that is organizing a city-wide program
called ‘Pray Away the Gay.’ Next month, we’ll organize prayer vigils and
conferences and we’ll offer free sexual-orientation-reversal counseling. I’m in
charge of handing out flyers at the airport and downtown and in front of
businesses that are supporting the effort, providing a schedule for all of the
events.”
180-DEGREES OPPOSITE: I am a married heterosexual woman, and I know that no one
could pray enough to ever cause my husband to stop wanting to have sex with me
and start having sex with men instead. It would be insane for me to believe
otherwise.
Also, I know too that I did not choose to be heterosexual, and it is insane for me to think that others have chosen their sexual orientation. Sexual preferences are what they are, not what “should be” according to ignorance controlling types. Might a preference change? In some cases, but might that be about the awareness of one’s actual preference changing? (Some women have told me that they dated enough a-hole men that they were driven to change by those types. All very complex, yes?)
At one point, there were eleven homosexual penguins in the New York City Zoo, and I would be insane
to believe that they choose that orientation. I also know that I do not care at
all what one heterosexual person does with another in their bedroom, so it is
crazy for me care about what any non-heterosexual people do in their bedrooms or
to believe that it is any of my business or any religion’s business.”
BELIEF: [After answering the telephone, this was heard] “I just had such a
close call in my car that I am out of breath and shaking, but I had to tell you
that God just saved my life. I was at an intersection and the light turned
green and I started forward and a car coming from my left ran the red light and
hit the left front side of my car. If he had been two seconds later running the
light, he’d have hit right by the door and window where I was sitting and I’d
be dead. God is good!”
180-DEGREES OPPOSITE [Offered to her for her consideration]: And would it not be
the case that if the man running the red light had been five seconds later
instead of two seconds later, you’d have cleared the intersection and not been
hit at all? And if god was about the business of intervening in your behalf,
would it not have been more indicative of both his omniscience and omnipotence
if your god had stopped the man from running the light in the first place?
Then,
you would not have a damaged car and be out of breath and shaking. Or - if your
god is going about the task of intervening in your behalf and safeguarding you
- might he have inspired you to accelerate a bit faster so that you were
through the intersection before the man ran the light? (No need to share the
response to the considerations offered. Any who have dealt with religious and
spiritual giants can guess her reply.)
BELIEF: [From a newscast interview with a mother whose eleven-year-old daughter
was pulled from a fast-moving river that she had fallen into during a
rainstorm]: “It’s a miracle. After she had been swept downstream for a mile,
the hand of God reached down and pushed her to the shore and tangled her up in
the branches of a fallen tree until the rescuers could get her out of the
river.”
180-DEGREE OPPOSITE: In actuality, if one is sane, she or he would see that no god was
involved in that at all. It all had to do with the currents, and the path of
river currents is determined by many factors. Also in actuality, I must admit
that the only real wonder is this: it’s a real wonder that the daughter had
survived eleven years with a mother who is so incompetent that she lets her
daughter play next to a swollen river during a rainstorm. Also, if the hand of
God had a role in this, it would seem that He would have pushed her back
while still on shore instead of having to push her out; that is, He would have pushed her back from
the river bank before she fell in instead of subjecting her to the trauma of
nearly drowning and being swept downstream for a mile. I guess that what I said
to the reporter was inspired by my “Good, Religious Mom” ego-state that used
insane words to express an insane thought. Next thing you know, following a wreck, I’ll be
claiming that God’s hand came down to slow down my car so I only got hit on the
front bumper instead of dead center on my driver’s side car door.
CONCEPT: An actual account shared with me by a woman in stress: “I am dating a
man in my church who does not know that I had sexual relations six years ago
when I was a senior in high school. He is a virgin and said he is saving
himself for the right woman and is looking for the right woman who has saved
herself for him. We talked about marriage, but I have that secret that I’m
hiding from him. I was so ashamed and depressed that I wanted to die just
thinking about having to tell him I was not a virgin. Then a woman in my church
referred me to a website where I found this, so I’m going to be able to be a
virgin again and won’t have to tell my boyfriend about my past:
[From that actual website she visited]:
The following information is offered to
those seeking hymen repair, vaginal tightening, a designer vagina and other
plastic surgery.
Not being a virgin does not come as a surprise anymore these days. Many women
lose their virginities at an early age in this modern world of ours. Yet
virginity is, in some corners of society, still considered a precious
possession.

healing powers as well. Pastor can guide you through that final step to truly
and honestly being a virgin once again.”
180-Degree Opposite: [Sorry, site visitors. Sometimes the levels of distortion,
delusion, conning, self-conning, ignorance and insanity are so beyond the realm of logic
and sanity, and so steeped in what Maharaj called “ignorance and stupidity,”
that even the realized can be stunned into silence. You’ll have to write the
opposite of the concept and belief above yourself if you want that.]
