More Ego-Defense Mechanisms Which Prevent Persons from Seeing How “Ignorance and Stupidity and Insanity” (per Maharaj) Control Their Thoughts, Words, and Actions
7. Distortion: (defined as “the act
or an instance of distorting; the condition of being distorted; a statement
that twists fact; a misrepresentation; the modification of unconscious impulses
into forms acceptable by conscious or dreaming perception; a misperception”).
8. Denial: (defined as “an
unconscious defense mechanism characterized by a refusal to acknowledge painful
realities, thoughts, or feelings; the act of disowning or disavowing; the conscious
use of a lie to sustain one or more ego-states”).
An example: some visitors to the site know that during the week, one source of
employment here involves working as a consultant with counselors and their
clients. In some cases, the consulting involves addressing the number one
source of divorce (“money issues”);
involves setting up budgets for couples;
and entails explaining the mental roots of financial problems as well as
explaining the personality roots of financial problems.
In other cases, enneagram test results are shared and analyzed and discussed in
order to allow clients to understand how their personality types will inspire
them to enter into a personality trance that removes any and all ability to
choose because the hidden agendas of personality types determine thoughts and
words and deeds among the non-realized masses.
Some time back a couple showed up at the request of the husband whose wife had
said that she was leaving him after having discovered four instances of
infidelity on her husband’s part. For his part, he claimed that he was there “to
save his marriage”;
actually, he was there to try to save his many false identities (husband,
homeowner, father, lover, finance man, outstanding man in the community, the
honorable law enforcement officer, etc.)
Consider, then, the distortion and denial that came into play when the wife
asked, “Can you tell the truth at least one time in your life and admit that
you have had four affairs?”
His reply: “The bad news is that, yes, I have been with four other women since
we married, but the good news is that I never had sexual relations with any of them.”
Her reply: “Excuse me?! I read some of the emails they sent you that you left
open on our computer.”
His response: “Swear to God, I’m telling the truth. Nothing happened with any
of them except they gave me oral sex.”
Her reply as she stood and began walking out: “You are totally insane!”
Sitting in the office with a totally confused look on his face, he held out his
hands and said, “What?! Do you see now what I’m up against?”
It was clear that he was so embroiled in distortion and denial that he was
nowhere near ready for truth and that there was nothing he would be able to
realize or grasp or comprehend from any further discussion. The session ended
with my explaining that to him.
9. Egotism: (defined as “the
excessive use of ‘I,’ ‘My,’ ‘Me;’ self-conceit; selfishness; narcissism; the
habit of thinking or talking too much of oneself; the tool used after an
ego-state has been assumed in order to upgraded and sustain the illusion that
that ego-state is real and is wonderful.)
Another example: The case of another couple that was being worked with evolved
thusly: the roles of “The Wife” and “The Husband” had been assumed in a church
ceremony. As always happens after an ego-state has been assumed, the
ego-defense mechanism of egotism was triggered. Soon, she had upgraded her role
to “The Super Wife” and he had upgraded his role to “The Super Husband.”
All that “The Wife” needed to “exist” was “The Husband,” and all that “The
Husband” needed to “exist” was “The Wife.”
(That is always the case when an ego-state is assumed: a false identity will always require a codependent player to play the counterpart role for an ego-state to be “sustained.” Duality is guaranteed.)
After the egotism-inspired upgrading, neither was content any
longer with “what / who they had.”
After her “self”-upgrading to “The Super Wife,” she needed “A Super Husband” in
order to “be” what she thinks she is; same with him. At that point, all that
was being dealt with in the session were two egomaniacs - trapped in arrogance
and superciliousness and self-importance and condescension and conceit of the
highest order - arrogance which is now driving them both to downgrade the other
(whom they had once upgraded and idealized).
As with those suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder, there was an
unwarranted idealization followed by an unwarranted degrading. The distortion
came first as each idealized and upgraded the other - their “pro / con lists”
(as in the case of another couple mentioned recently) uncovering no negatives
but only a wealth of positives instead.
The prognosis: there might be a slight chance for their “relationship” if each
comes to the non-dual understanding which offers freedom from a sense of
separation; freedom from a sense of “better-than-ment” and the practice of
judging (which always accompanies the “better than” mindset);
and freedom from the continuing assumption of false identities that will always
trigger the use of ego-defense mechanisms as well as the offensive stances and
actions that are taken when one’s false identities are challenged or not
supported by the counter, codependent role-player that is required in every
case of false identity assumption.
On the other hand, if the dualistic idealizing and downgrading is evidence of
the presence of the Borderline Personality Disorder in one or both, their case
is likely hopeless.]
