"PERSONALITY IN GENERAL"
Some ask why so much attention is paid to personality by “Advaitins” / “Non-Dualists”
and why the enneagram is taught by this author. A simple understanding of the
results of being driven by the unconscious and hidden motivators rooted in
personality should make clear the answer.
Personality is not innate. It develops in response to
(1) the abnormal and unnatural influences of the dysfunctionalism to which children are exposed and to
(2) their effort to try to "adjust" to the dysfunctionalism in their families of origin;
and, later, to
(3) the
influences of ignorance-disseminating institutions and the effects of exposure
to a plethora of cultural entities that reinforce the abnormal and unnatural
(to which dysfunctional families of non-realized persons expose children).
That which is rooted in a response to the abnormal and unnatural (and which
involves no alternative options for making any independent choices or choosing
an alternative environment) will also be abnormal and unnatural. And that is
what personality is: abnormal and unnatural.
What is innate in all humans is an inner sense of authenticity. Many young children will hear adults spouting one bit of BS or another and respond, "no way," but they are soon taught - or conditioned via punishment - to never challenge "authority figures" and to believe what they are told; thus, their contact with that which is true and authentic will not last.
Since personality
develops early on, a sense of self (and, eventually, selves) will further block contact
with authenticity, with an awareness of the essence, and with an awareness of the
non-dual unicity.
There is initially a sense of oneness, though it is not “The Sense of Oneness”:
it happens for the first two years of a child's existence when it identifies
with the mother and has no notions about "two-ness" or
"duality," assuming that mother-child is "not two" but is
"one" instead.
Around the age of two, the child has "discovered" its hands and feet
and, eventually, its own body that is separate from the body of the mom. At
that point, another source of a false sense of separation and different-from-ment
develops, setting the stage for the child to "find its own identity."
Over the next years, the child will be assigned many false identities (will be
assigned many false personas / personalities) and will eventually begin to
assume many more false identities (false personas / personalities) on its own.

"persona" (Lt.) = "mask," "character,"
"guise," "role," "facade," "front."]
Each personality that develops or is assumed separates the child even farther
from reality. Eventually, personality will blocks all awareness of reality as
more and more false selves are believed (erroneously) to define "who one
is."
If non-dual pointers are to lead to a "re-realization" (to a
"re-membering") of that which is authentic, then persons must first
eliminate that which blocks the "path" and blocks the awareness of
that innate sense of authenticity.
Those blockages - imposed via warped conditioning, programming, domestication, acculturation, brainwashing, and indoctrination - include, "a false but tightly embraced
sense of self and selves" . . . a sense that personality / personalities
are real . . . a sense that personas are of some benefit rather than one of the
forces that generate chaos (and / or desires to control) throughout the
relative existence.
Per the Direct Path Method offered here, the final personality-purging-process
happens after completion of the third step on the "journey"
from the false "I" or "I's" to realization of the essence, to
the authentic, to the Oneness.
It is there that
all false identities must be eliminated - including the roles of "The
Religious One," "The Spiritual Giant," "The Great Knower,"
"The Supreme Self," and even "The Super Seeker" itself.
"Liberation" merely refers to the end result of completing the process by
which persons are freed from the effects of the assigning or the assumption of
false personas which, simultaneously, will liberate them from the desires and
fears which are rooted in personality and that produce so much relative chaos
and so much longing to control and so much desire for power (and for "a
Power" / "God" or "Powers" / "Gods and
Goddesses") to help them control.
Have you ever investigated which personality types have been driving you? And
to what degree? Do you even know? In what order should they be focused on to
remove the most detrimental blockers of seeing truth and then allow functioning
to happen throughout the relative existence with stability rather than
instability?
Are you aware of which specific desire and fear of each type is most adversely
impacting your relative existence and contributing to your misery and
suffering?
Do you know what
personality disorders are manifesting alongside the personality types that are
driving you?
Since personality sets the stage for the manifestation of personality
disorders, if personality disorders are not recognized and diagnosed, then more
relative instability and chaos are assured.
In the beginning, children develop one of nine specific personality types in
response to the particular dysfunctionalism in their family and then behave for
the rest of the relative existence - realization notwithstanding - under the
influence of that which results from attempting to adjust to a dysfunctional
environment, including either perfectionism; or saving and rescuing to try to
gain love;
or performing to gain admiration; or isolating and focusing on self and,
possibly, on the search for authenticity; on isolating and analyzing and thinking
. . . withdrawing into "the mind"; on seeking a caretaker; on
escaping; on controlling;
or on behaving in a passive-aggressive manner in order to try to maintain their
inner peace (but always failing to do so and, therefore, eventually avoiding
conflict and tolerating abuse).
That primary type is "set" by age six, usually; later, other types
among the nine basic types can manifest; eventually scores of other personas
will be assumed and scores more will be assigned by one's culture.
The result:
nearly everyone on the planet is suffering from The Multiple Personality
Disorder.
To know the degree to which each of the nine basic personality types are
showing up is to have an opportunity to know which personality disorders might
also be manifesting and driving chaotic thoughts and words and deeds.
The link between type - and the types of disorders that often manifest with
each type - include the following that are among the most common:
the Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder; the Depressive Personality
Disorder; the Histrionic Personality Disorder; the Factitious Personality
Disorder; the Narcissistic Personality Disorder;
the God-Complex Personality Disorder; the Avoidant Personality Disorder; the
Cyclothymic Personality Disorder; the Schizoid Avoidant Personality Disorder;
the Schizotypal Personality Disorder;
the Passive-Aggressive Personality Disorder; the Paranoid Personality Disorder;
the Dependent Personality Disorder; the Manic-Depressive (Bi-Polar) Personality
Disorder;
the Addictive Personality Disorder; the Antisocial Personality Disorder; the
Sociopathic Personality Disorder; the Sadistic Personality Disorder; the
Multiple Personality Disorder or the Dissociative Identity Disorder, and many,
many more.
Additionally, all personality types produce emotional intoxication and
emotional instability, and, in more and more instances, another disorder
manifests . . . a disorder known as the Emotionally-Unstable Personality Disorder
or the Borderline Personality Disorder.
When that now-more-commonplace-than-ever disorder is driving thoughts and words
and deeds (which happen to align with the thoughts and words and actions of the
non-Realized), then persons will find it difficult to distinguish between
reality and their own misperceptions of the world and their surrounding
environment.
They will be trapped in a state of emotional intoxication that is as
debilitating as it is among those who are physically intoxicated and who are
staggering about in a stupor while thinking that they are actually fully aware
and totally in control;
instead, they
are trapped in the dream of the planet and are walking and talking and driving
and working - and doing everything they do - in their sleep.
One core problem with persons who suffer from the now-common Borderline
Disorder is their difficulty with expressing appropriate feelings (and their
inability to be totally "available") to significant people in their
lives.
[There are entire cultures where persons are especially cold and incapable of
feeling and where parents are excessively rigid and distant and formal and
remote and detached and aloof; those are the parents who have never said
"I love you" to their own children even once and who have never
hugged their children even once;
who teach their
children to keep a stiff upper lip; who never show their feelings; and who do
not allow their children to show their feelings, either. Repression, and the
consequences thereof, are prevalent throughout such cultures.]
Eventually, as the Borderline Disorder progresses, there can be a shift beyond
being driven by emotional intoxication and becoming enraged, distrustful, and
fearful. Instability is common as borderlines vacillate between idealization
and degrading ... between upgrading and downgrading people, places and things.
Is it becoming clear why sages for ages have recommended to seekers that they
take the steps to be free of personality? The "goal" of the non-dual
understanding is always to move persons to a state of independence and
stability, freed of all identification, including identification with the body
and the mind and the personalities that generate chaos and the desire to
control. That can never happen as long as personality remains and is
subconsciously driving all thoughts and words and actions.
Various “teachings” might temporarily offer some degree of "emotion
regulation" as the seeker moves along the path, but in the end, belief in
and attachment to ego-states - to false personalities which generate emotional
intoxication - must be eliminated.
As long as personas are assumed to be real, then all of the negative effects of
personality disorders (relatively speaking) will manifest and will assure an
existence dominated by fluctuation, by chaos, by a desire to control, and by
the frustration that comes when efforts to control people, places, and things
fail . . . as will always, ultimately, be the case.
