REGARDING "SUBJECT-OBJECT WITNESSING" AND "PURE WITNESSING" (A.K.A., "TRUE SELF")
There may well be as much talk about “finding the True Self” as there is about any single non-dual topic. For the sake of discussion, the term was used by Maharaj and has been used here.
Yet what Maharaj came to understand and what I came to understand as well is this:
What is taken by persons and by other to be “you” is nothing more than a three-part composite unity currently comprised of (1) an elemental plant food body which exists only temporarily and (2) a space created by the joining together of those elements which is circulating air and (3) a space created by the joining together of those elements which is capable of circulating conscious-energy.
The circulation of conscious-energy is dependent upon the continual consumption of food because the body can only “store” a finite quantity of any kind of energy.
If the consumption of food and the functioning of body organs is happening naturally, then the conscious-energy provides the basic requirement for a composite unity to witness physical things around the unity (but with no guarantee that what is witnessed will be seen accurately.)
[For example, a so-called “brick” looks one way to the eye of a human but if viewed under an electron microscope, it will be seen to be a swirling masses of energy which looks nothing like "a brick" when observed with the “naked eye of a human.”]
Moreover, the body elements are always in a state of flux: none of the outer skin cells of a body today will be present 28 days from now. Food much be consumed, and plant cells much be converted into human cells for the present manifestation to continue.
Per the Second Law of Thermodynamics, whatever joins together in this relative existence will be guaranteed to eventually un-join, come apart, fall apart, whatever.
At the point when mahasamadhi is taken, the elements will rejoin the universal pool of elements; the oxygen will rejoin the universal pool of oxygen; and the conscious-energy will rejoin the universal pool of un-manifested conscious-energy.
Therefore, to be functioning as a combination of elements, air, and energy cannot actually define any actual “self-ness,” and nothing that is a non-composite-unity can exist once the elements of a composite unity are no longer being replaced.
That said, there is no “self” no “selves,” no “True Self,” no “Infinite Self,” no “Supreme Self,” “no Special Self,” etc.
If that is clear, then a discussion of what is mistakenly identified as a self “or “True Self” can take place.
"SUBJECT-OBJECT WITNESSING"
Subject-object witnessing (or "object" or "objective"
witnessing) still involves duality (at least as far as the
not-totally-unobstructed consciousness "sees" it).
Post-realization, the term “I” can be used to refer to the consciousness which was
once obstructed from seeing clearly but no longer is, can be aware of the fact
that I am not that which persons think they are seeing when they look at me, and
can understand that I am not anything which the culture would label me.
All sense of "WHO-ness" is simply another myth.
Their S-O manner of viewing (i.e., misperceiving) still involves one supposedly
"seeing" something or someone else - the belief being that an
"A" can see a "B" - so such comments as these follow:
"I see a mirage" or "I cannot live with myself (really meaning
'this false self') anymore" or "That is my spouse over there."
Those observations still involve perceived dualities. Not until the next step
of Pure Witnessing does subject-object witnessing end and the witnessing of the
unicity finally happen.
At that point, when the consciousness is totally unobstructed, all that was
thought to be either "subject" or "object" is witnessed to
be One, to have always been One, and to forever be One.
That has nothing to do with such concepts as an "A" can unite with a
"B" or "Muslims can and should join with Christians in love and
harmony and vice-versa," or "Jews must love Hitler, too" or
"You must love whatever is." It does means that the "not
two" is understood to be false; that the supposed multiplicity is false;
and that there is "THAT one common denominator" which is true.
THAT has nothing to do with "personhood" or "people coming
together" or "loving." It does, however, lead to an
understanding of Real, True Love: "Love is knowing that I am
everything."
In other words, to shift from the S-O stage of witnessing to the next stage of
witnessing, it must be seen that (as the understanding of non-duality becomes
clearer) the talk of "subject" and "object" at this level
will have to give way to "subject only."
Were that understanding to happen planet-wide, then, yes, conflict would end;
members of one religion would stop killing members of other religions; nations
would stop dropping bombs on each other; couples would stop killing each other.
("Love is knowing that I am everything.")
Yet this understanding will never manifest on a planet-wide basis. It is enough
for You to understand you and You (the "I AM" and the "I AM
THAT") and the Oneness.
"PURE WITNESSING"
(a.k.a., the closest one can come to a presently
manifested "True Self")
There are multiple steps on the “journey” to realization.
Using Maharaj’s earliest version of a “path,” there were seven steps; using his
later version of “the path,” there are only four steps.
Following
his early “path,” the witnessing stages are two of the final “degrees of
separation from reality” that must be transitioned, but both the witness and
the Pure Witness must be “experienced” for a period (just as is the case with
religious and / or spiritual personas / personhood).
It is a necessity to transition each of “the degrees of separation from Reality
and reality” for full realization to happen.
Most on any such "path" as this one will stop at the third stage (the
"religious persona stage" or the "spiritual persona stage")
and never complete the journey to the full understanding. That stage, too, must
be transitioned if full realization is to happen.
Shifting beyond object witnessing sets the stage for eventually understanding
the Oneness (and, eventually, even the nothingness: "Wisdom is knowing
that I am nothing").
Then,
the so-called True Self can come to know the "everything" . . . the
Oneness of it all . . . the Truth. The actual unicity beyond the imagined
multiplicity is understood.
At that point, there will be an understanding of "that everlasting,
timeless, imperishable Subject."
The Pure Witness—the True Self—can then know the Oneness that comes with the
awareness that a tiny "building-block" of energy-consciousness is all
there is to "Self-ness" during the manifestation.
When Pure Witnessing allows the unicity to be "seen" / understood,
then all supposed differences are also seen accurately, are also seen to be
mere appearances that only seem to be different (which is a result of energy
vibrating at varied frequencies).
From the platform of the Pure Witness, the beingness and the non-beingness can
be understood and the "state" of Absolute rest and peace can be seen.
Then, the remainder of the relative existence can be passed in the "I
Am," in the "Is-ness," in "the Pure Witnessing mode,"
in "the AS IF style," and—finally—by abiding as the Absolute.
Also at that point, because "the world" has always only been in you,
then "the world" for you transforms into a peaceful, Loving
"place."
That "transformation," actually, has never involved anything more
than a shift in perspective. (See the book A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE for more
specifics about that shift in the manner of witnessing.)
