The Serendipitous Nature of “Finding” Which Can Occur When Taking a Break from “Seeking”
For all of the work that is put into seeking - especially when “The Super Seeker” persona is functioning - the case might be that if one takes a break from seeking “realization” or “enlightenment” or an “awakening” and rests for a change, an amazing expansion of understanding might occur when totally unexpected or unforeseen or unanticipated and seemingly “by chance.”
Such was the case with me. A key turning point or advancement point along “the path to realization” involved the serendipitous nature of “finding” which can occur when taking a break from “seeking.” In that regard, this has offered in the past:
Full disclosure involves the admission that - after years of “spiritual workaholism” and super-seeking - much of the present understanding offered here was received by way of what is labeled as “The Vision,” a vision which came in the late 1990’s while resting in the quiet and eventually falling into a theta level of consciousness.
After that, the understanding here shifted in terms of what “realization” does and does not involve, clarifying why the content of Maharaj’s later talks differed so significantly from that of his earlier talks. It was finally seen that, indeed, “realization” does not involve anything that is lofty and soaring and grand and exalted and noble.
I had lain down to rest on the floor of a condo located on the third story of a building overlooking a lake. From that supine position in front of a nine-foot-by-nine-foot window, neither the path leading down the hill to the lake nor the path leading down to my boat slip in the harbor below could be seen. What was seen was the lake beyond and treetops across the lake, ironically in the area called “Walden” where I now reside just a few blocks from “Thoreau Drive.”
[The irony is that when I was in high school, one assignment was for me to read a book which described the “Forest Dweller Stage” of a man called “Thoreau.” That led to a re-introduction of the pointer that there is “a unity beyond the multiplicity” a message offered years earlier by Grandmother though she did not use that exact phrase.]
Also while lying on my back and looking toward the lake, I witnessed a heron - a fellow "loner" living lakeside as I was - as it flew slowly and steadily toward that forest on the opposite side of the lake. The setting felt totally natural. Then my eyes closed and I began to relax. Soon, the vision would come.
In the beginning, the vision seemed as if it were being watched from a distance, as if the Pure Witnessing were seated alone in a theater and was watching a host of realizations in picture form as they moved across the screen of consciousness.
Some had been seen before, but not in as sharp a focus, so it was for the first time that all was being viewed with the clarify which is only available when looking through the eye of awareness, allowing the final vestiges of any remaining fog to be lifted and allowing all to be seen with unobstructed lucidity for the first time ever, including "The Seven-Step Path," "The Multi-Leg 'Journey'," "Reaching the Borderline," "The Gross, Subtle, and Causal Bodies," "Manifesting and Unmanifesting," and so much more.
The vision provided an entire series of revelations which - it is understood now - were emanating from the inner resource (that is, via the unblocked consciousness or the inner guru) as the final blockages which had been accumulated in a mind over a period of decades fell away and allowed unchecked access to that which had always been known, within, but which had not been tapped into as deeply and as completely before entering a theta state on that afternoon.
Some of the realizations which came via that vision will be shared (without any suggestion that these realizations are the only “right and proper non-dual realizations”).
In the vision, it was seen that there is no post-dissolution reward or punishment.
The vision illustrated that the Second Law of Thermodynamics does accurately point to the non-dual fact that things merely come together spontaneously and that all things will eventually come apart spontaneously. All in between that is taken be "a life" is really just "much ado about nothing."
The vision made clear that what is called "fear" is based in not understanding the functioning of the totality and that what is called "courage" is based in the understanding of the functioning of the totality.
The vision made clear that body and mind and personality identification truly are all obstacles to realization and that each step that moves one away from assuming those false identifications is a step which moves a seeker closer to realization, to understanding both “reality” and “Reality,” to understanding both the AM-ness and the THAT-ness, and to understanding that the statement "I AM THAT; I AM" does truly mean “not two” when “Reality is overlaid on reality.”
The vision made clear that manifesting, realizing, abiding sanely and unmanifesting are all “legs” of what is, overall, a "four-part, four-leg journey." [More on that later.]
The vision made clear that abidance as one's Original Nature is sane and natural and that anything else is unnatural (including things deemed to be "supernatural" or "spiritual").
The vision made clear that while a guide or guru can be a temporary requirement for assisting one in reaching the arch - that is, for putting a seeker on the proper path and headed in the proper direction away from body identification alone - the movement through the steps to the final dissolution, to the total understanding, and to full realization does not happen in congregations or flocks or assemblies or groups or gatherings or meetings or in any venue that is not a natural one.
The vision showed that most persons involved in a seeking process try to use needless and superfluous and gratuitous venues. In the vision which revealed what realization is truly like and what it truly involves, a host of fabricated-by-humankind venues flashed across the screen and then instantaneously dissolved with a "poof," revealing that such temporary (and therefore irrelevant) venues are not required, including . . .
churches; spiritual groups; temples; mosques; ashrams; cathedrals; synagogues; "houses of worship"; shrines; places on earth that some deem to be "special and holy and mystical";
groups that chant; groups around tables with captive audiences where the abnormal norm is to talk and talk and talk; groups with members who become emotionally-intoxicated and roll around on the floor during their services;
groups that speak "in tongues" that they claim are "unknown, even to them"; groups that hum or chant; groups that ring "special" bells or hit "special bowls" with "special sticks" or who smell "special" smoke and do things with "special" water;
or in any other man-made structure or any man-designated place. The vision, by contrast, took place in all-natural venues.
The vision made clear that none of those unnatural and / or supposedly supernatural complications are necessary.
In the vision, it was made clear that all happened privately, alone in a natural setting, not in any place made by man for the purpose of "worship" or "idolization" or "reverence" or "veneration" or for the purpose of showing off one's assigned or assumed religious and / or spiritual roles or for any other unnatural or supposedly-supernatural purpose.
In the vision, it was seen that everything involved with the realization process happened without the accompaniment of smoke screens and bells and whistles and earthly choirs or "heavenly" choirs.
The vision made clear that realization requires no shouting or chanting or singing or screaming or babbling by other people because, in the vision, there were no other people.
The vision made clear not only exactly what is required for full realization (which is minimal) but also made clear what is not required (additions which, on this planet, are excessive and extreme and disproportionate to what, in the end, is a process which was shown in the vision to be exactly as Maharaj described: "simple").
Why “simple”? Because in his later talks Maharaj made clear that “realization is merely the state entered into when all beliefs and learned ignorance are abandoned.”
To be continued.
